Key subjects covered include:

  • the legitimacy of the Communist Party

Product Description

In the two decades after their defeat by the United States in the Creek War in 1814, the Creek Indians of Georgia and Alabama came under increasing—ultimately irresistible—pressure from state and federal governments to abandon their homeland and retreat westward. That historic move came in 1836. This study, based heavily on a wide variety of primary sources, is distinguished for its Creek perspective on tribal affairs during a period of upheaval.

Product Description
Offering a provocative new look at the politics of secession in antebellum Virginia, William Link places African Americans at the center of events and argues that their acts of defiance and rebellion had powerful political repercussions throughout the turbulent period leading up to the Civil War.

An upper South state with nearly half a million slaves--more than any other state in the nation--and some 50,000 free blacks, Virginia witnessed a uniquely volatile convergence of slave resistance and electoral politics in the 1850s. While masters struggled with slaves, disunionists sought to join a regionwide effort to secede and moderates sought to protect slavery but remain in the Union. Arguing for a definition of political action that extends beyond the electoral sphere, Link shows that the coming of the Civil War was directly connected to Virginia's system of slavery, as the tension between defiant slaves and anxious slaveholders energized Virginia politics and spurred on the impending sectional crisis. ... I purchased this used textbook online and received it after a couple of days. The newest edition of this book is $106.65 and I got the previous edition for $20.00 which is almost the same except for some info on some numbers. The book was better than I expected. So great saving!!

4-0 out of 5 stars make sure to buy used
I agree with what K Long said. From what I have seen in the textbook and the older versions, the extra chapter can be compensated through other means. I don't see why buying this condition book in mint condition now would be worth your money as it won't be long till 14th edition comes along.

Product Description
The Politics of Human Rights provides a systematic introductory overview of the nature and development of human rights. At the same time it offers an engaging argument about human rights and their relationship with politics. The author argues thathuman rights have only a slight relation to natural rights and they are historically novel: In large part they are a post-1945 reaction to genocide which is, in turn, linked directly to the lethal potentialities of the nation-state. He suggests that an understanding of human rights should nonetheless focus primarily on politics and that there are no universally agreed moral or religious standards to uphold them, they exist rather in the context of social recognition within a political association. A consequence of this is that the 1948 Universal Declaration is a political, not a legal or moral, document.

Vincent goes on to show that human rights are essentially reliant upon the self-limitation capacity of the civil state. With the development of this state, certain standards of civil behavior have become, for a sector of humanity, slowly and painfully more customary. He shows that these standards of civility have extended to a broader society of states. At their best human rights are an ideal civil state vocabulary. The author explains that we comprehend both our own humanity and human rights through our recognition relations with other humans, principally via citizenship of a civil state. Vincent concludes that the paradox of human rights is that they are upheld, to a degree, by the civil state, but the point of such rights is to protect against another dimension of this same tradition (the nation-state). Human rights are essentially part of a struggle at the core of the state tradition. ... Read more

This edition updates every chapter, with the addition of a new chapter on France and Europe. Product Description
Bringing together an expert team of authors, Introduction to Politics provides an intellectually stimulating yet accessible introduction to politics that takes current global realities into account. The text is divided into three sections that reflect the authors' expertise: concepts and ideologies, comparative politics, and international relations. Moving beyond a descriptive narrative, the authors take an analytical approach that introduces students to the debates and inherent complexities of the topics covered.
Adopting an international perspective, Introduction to Politics avoids a focus on Western democracies and assumptions of liberal democratic supremacy, instead illustrating points by using examples from a wide range of places including the Islamic states, Eastern Europe, Asia, and Africa. One third of the book is dedicated to international relations, and the authors also examine transnational factors and forces throughout.
Introduction to Politics is enhanced by excellent pedagogical features including case-study boxes, numerous practical examples, readers' guides, key points, cross-references, a guide to further reading, and a glossary. An innovative companion website features additional case studies and a variety of resources for both students and instructors. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb work on Ukraine's political system
Paul D'Anieri has written a long overdue explanation of the complicated world that is Ukrainian politics.Given the recent developments in Ukraine (viz. Ukraine's Orange Revolution), the book is timely as ever and ought to satisfy the most demanding of political junkies. It is cogent, organized and well researched. Its possible weakness - in some readers' eyes - is occasional repetitiveness by the author on topics previously addressed. On the other hand, this allows one to skip a section or even a chapter and still grasp the material fully.

To whom may this book appeal? Not for tourists. If you're thinking about visiting the blue and yellow country's Carpathian mountains or its Crimean beaches then you are best to opt for Ukraine (Lonely Planet Travel Guides).Otherwise, you may like this book if you are:a graduate student (or advanced undergrad), a journalist, a business person, a scholar, or simply someone interested in understanding how political systems work.Because it explains its analytical methods, the book will help its readers understand not only the political processes in Ukraine, but in other political systems.

What's inside the book?

-Chapter 1 is the "Introduction."This is the chapter that will help you get started actually understanding Ukrainian politics. It will serve as a primer and should not be skipped.

-Chapter 2 deals with "Institutions and Democracy."It is a type of literature review so if you are not familiar with the debates in the field then read it.If you are familiar then you may still find it helpful as a review section.Your choice.(This is also the chapter where D'Anieri explains why "institutional design" and "power politics" help understand Ukraine's political system).

-Chapter 3 "Power and Institutions" reviews one of the book's main theses: that the problem is "the concentration of de facto political power in the executive branch," a legacy from the Soviet times (pg. 73).The chapter is one of the more technical and may be dense for some readers. However, this is the bone upon which the meat will be thrown in the rest of the book.(The section on machine politics is rather interesting for its comparison with the U.S. experience).

-Chapter 4 titled "Evolution of Ukrainian Politics 1989-2006" is a mini-history of what happened, when, how and why.I knew the majority of this material, but it was still very helpful in situating the overall argument.

-Chapter 5 deals with "Societal Divisions."The news reports like to dramatize conflicts, such as the East-West divide.D'Anieri takes a hard empirical look at it, and finds that parties in the Ukrainian parliament are driven primarily by left-right rather than by linguistic or ethnic issues (pg. 114).The larger point is that majority coalitions are possible despite political cleavages.

-Chapter 6 addresses "institutional issues."The gist - institutions are crucial because they shape incentives of political actors. Also, don't miss the discussion on potential problems with the 2006 amendments, which instead of establishing separation of powers, created overlapping powers (pg. 146).

-Chapter 7 has to do with everything "Electoral Law" related. What explains the absence of majority in parliament? Is the shift to PR system good or bad?Find out here.

-Chapter 8 or "Parliamentary Rules."Whoever thought that Congressional rules matter, at least to the point that they do in Ukraine? In this section of the book, you'll learn the differences among "parties" vs. "blocks" vs. "factions."D'Anieri also talks about the "imperative mandate" which was at the center of the Spring-Summer 2007 crisis when Yushchenko dissolved Verkhovna Rada.

-Chapter 9 titled "How Power Politics Trumps Institutional Design" will tell you how authoritarian governments do what they do.It might as well be a handbook for aspiring authoritarians. The tools range from selective law enforcement to patronage to the control of judiciary and others. The chapter also talks about the limits of these resources.

-Chapter 10 is a "Comparative Perspective."How does Ukraine compare with Russia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia and Venezuela? The section is a bit rushed and the subject (as the author admits) is not treated in-depth.However, it seems to serve the needs of the book and gives it a global application outside the Ukrainian case.

-Lastly Chapter 11 where D'Anieri elaborates on "Beyond Orange Revolution."What does that specific event mean in Ukraine's history?Where do we go from here? The author offers an agenda for further reform which would help Ukrainian leaders and the people lead the country away from the "electoral authoritarianism."

This text is the most up-to-date and thorough work in the field. I strongly recommend if not acquiring it then certainly reading it by getting a copy from the library.Enjoy the maze of power, politics, and institutional design.

Product Description
Comparative Politics: Rationality, Culture, and Structure is a completely revised second edition of the volume that guided thousands of scholars through the intellectual demands and gratifications of comparative political science.Retaining a focus on the field's research schools, it now pays parallel attention to the pragmatics of causal research.Mark Lichbach begins with a review of discovery, explanation and evidence and Alan Zuckerman argues for explanations with social mechanisms.Ira Katznelson, writing on structuralist analyses, Margaret Levi on rational choice theory, and Marc Ross on culturalist analyses, assess developments in the field's research schools.Subsequent chapters explore the relationship among the paradigms and current research: Joel Migdal examines the state; Mark Blyth adds culturalist themes to work on political economy; Etel Solingen locates the international context of comparative politics; Doug McAdam, Charles Tilly, and Sidney Tarrow address contentious politics; Robert Huckfeldt explores multi-level analyses; Christopher Anderson describes nested voters; Jonathan Rodden examines endogenous institutions; Isabela Mares studies welfare states, and Kanchan Chandra proposes a causal account of ethnic politics. The volume offers a rigorous and exciting assessment of the past decade of scholarship in comparative politics. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars If you have a choice, don't read this book!
Unless you are a master's or PhD student specializing solely in comparative politics, don't read this book. It was assigned to my comparative politics class (master's level) and everyone hated it. I trudged through 50 pages until I just couldn't take it anymore. Very poorly written and vague, but drenched in academic-sounding details.

Lim's "Doing Comparative Politics" and Landman's "Issues and Methods in Comparative Politics" are much more clearly written and easier to understand.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book looks good, but IT IS THE WRONG BOOK
This book definitely looks like a good introduction to Comparative Politics. However, the Table of Contents posted on this book's site here is not the table of contents of the book that will be sent to you. Knowing that, I regret having bought through Marketplace. Overall, my experience with Amazon has been consistently satisfactory, and I will continue to shop with the company, but I am disappointed by the false advertising here, and I hope Amazon changes the advertised table of contents.

Thank you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overly Technical
While a great compliation of leading political scientists, this book assumes a high level of proir familiarity with the topic matter. For the novice reader, this book was way over my head. For experts, I can not see why they would be reading a book by various authors as opposed to reading the works directly from the theorists cited. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful for political science students and teachers
I'm a teacher on research methods for political sciences and I'm using this book in my classes. The main concepts of comparative analysis are presented clearly and precisely, with very useful examples. The summary tables and sections help the students to focus on the principal arguments of each chapter.
From the perspective of a university teacher, the structure of the book is very interesting: a combination of political problems and several methodological strategies to study these problems. In the second part of the book you can find a presentation of six substantial research subjects of comparative politics (economic development and democracy; political violence; social movements and politics; transitions to democracy; democracy and institutional design; human rights), for each of these subjects or fields, the author presents several examples of research based on different designs and methodological choices (large-n, small-n and single case studies), so the reader can appreciate the contribution of a specific research strategy and method to understand a political problem, compare it with other methods and strategies, and make a balance of the potentials and limits of the multiple choices a researcher can face when he wants to study a subject in comparative politics.
The book is well written. The presentation of the subjects and issues is very structured, that makes it easy to read and accessible to advance undergraduate students without loosing deepness in the discussion

5-0 out of 5 stars German-language review
... Read more

Product Description

For courses in American Government.

With a focus on conflict and the struggle for power, this textbook ignites students' interest in American politics.

This balanced and exceedingly readable text uses Harold Laswell's classic definition of politics—“Who gets what, when, and how”—as a framework for presenting a clear, concise, and stimulating introduction to the American political system. Updated with discussions of recent events in our country, well-known political scientist Tom Dye has written a lively and absorbing narrative examining the struggle for power: the participants, the stakes, the processes, and the institutional arenas. An abundance of feature boxes explore timely issues and opinions, draw cross-cultural comparisons, and introduce important people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for college course on parties (& elections)
I teach Political Science at a liberal arts college, and have used the 13th edition of this text for two semesters in my Parties & Elections course.I find it to be an excellent text.As the title suggests, the book focuses on political parties (rather than elections), covering "party in government," "party organization," and "party in the electorate" thoroughly. That said, Party Politics in America goes beyond parties to discuss material more relevant to elections as well:It includes two chapters on nominations, one chapter on the general election, and a chapter on campaign finance. The "party in the electorate" section also does a great job covering electoral behavior. So that's professor's perspective; I should add that my students also seem to enjoy the text. It's informative while also being kind of fun.The one problem with the 13th edition is that, although copyrighted in 2009, it doesn't make it to the 2008 general election; the updated 14th edition, which I adopted for my fall course, does.

2-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but not much substance at all here.
I'm currently reading this textbook for a college-level political science course and I have to say that I'm pretty disappointed. One could easily challenge many of the underlying assumptions that form the "substance" of Hershey's text. It seems that the author has done little beyond manipulate a lot of the stereotypes associated with political parties. For example, if there are millions of people in America, who (as she claims) were indoctrinated by their parents or school into a political party by elementary school age, then I certainly don't know any...

Product Description
The Oxford Handbook of Comparative Politics offers a critical survey of the field of empirical political science through the collection of a set of chapters written by 48 top scholars in the discipline of comparative politics. Part I includes chapters surveying the key research methodologies employed in comparative politics (the comparative method; the use of history; the practice and status of case-study research; the contributions of field research) and assessing the possibility of constructing a science of comparative politics. Parts II to IV examine the foundations of political order: the origins of states and the extent to which they relate to war and to economic development; the sources of compliance or political obligation among citizens; democratic transitions, the role of civic culture; authoritarianism; revolutions; civil wars and contentious politics. Parts V and VI explore the mobilization, representation and coordination of political demands. Part V considers why parties emerge, the forms they take and the ways in which voters choose parties. It then includes chapters on collective action, social movements and political participation. Part VI opens up with essays on the mechanisms through which political demands are aggregated and coordinated. This sets the agenda to the systematic exploration of the workings and effects of particular institutions: electoral systems, federalism, legislative-executive relationships, the judiciary and bureaucracy. Finally, Part VII is organized around the burgeoning literature on macropolitical economy of the last two decades. ... Read more

I had to purchase this book for school, but it's easy to read and doesn't seem to have any bias they way some textbooks do on topics such as government. The chapters are interesting and the authors give many viewpoints, not just one.
