Product Description
Deceit and Denial details the attempts by the chemical and lead industries to deceive Americans about the dangers that their deadly products present to workers, the public, and consumers. Gerald Markowitz and David Rosner pursued evidence steadily and relentlessly, interviewed the important players, investigated untapped sources, and uncovered a bruising story of cynical and cruel disregard for health and human rights. This resulting expose is full of startling revelations, provocative arguments, and disturbing conclusions--all based on remarkable research and information gleaned from secret industry documents.

This book reveals for the first time the public relations campaign that the lead industry undertook to convince Americans to use its deadly product to paint walls, toys, furniture, and other objects in America's homes, despite a wealth of information that children were at risk for serious brain damage and death from ingesting this poison. This book highlights the immediate dangers ordinary citizens face because of the relentless failure of industrial polluters to warn, inform, and protect their workers and neighbors. It offers a historical analysis of how corporate control over scientific research has undermined the process of proving the links between toxic chemicals and disease. The authors also describe the wisdom, courage, and determination of workers and community members who continue to voice their concerns in spite of vicious opposition. Readable, pathbreaking, and revelatory, Deceit and Denial provides crucial answers to questions of dangerous environmental degradation, escalating corporate greed, and governmental disregard for its citizens' safety and health. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The academic equivalent of shock and awe
"Lawsuits... against some of the largest chemical and petrochemical companies in the world have led to the discovery of documents that show lying, manipulation of government officials, and secrecy as tools used by industry to protect its product. What emerges is a history of deceit that is strikingly similar to that of the asbestos and tobacco industries." [This and all quotes from my review are from Deceit and Denial]

Deceit and Denial is an exceptionally well researched book that lays bare the astounding extent of American corporate and political malfeasance with regard to industrial pollution in the 20th century, specifically focusing on the lead, chemical, and plastics industries. The authors' use of hitherto unseen primary source documents from corporate archives to make their case adds tremendous weight to the argument that industrial pollution damages not only people's physical health and the environment in which they live but that it also undermines our country's social and democratic institutions.

Deceit and Denial eloquently and thoroughly expounds on the proposition that corporate self-regulation is dangerous and that "when it comes to public health, the society has a right to insist that the community's interests come before the shareholders' profits." The reader is also reminded of a notion that has fallen by the wayside in post-9/11 America: it is "absolutely essential to have as much openness and free access to information as possible."

These ideas may not be new but you would be mistaken in thinking that this book is the product of a radical left-wing or environmentalist agenda. This is scholarly research of the first order. Deceit and Denial succeeds in being not only a damning indictment of past corporate machinations and political complicity but a lucid exposition of the critical issues that industry and our nation currently face in the 21st century.

2-0 out of 5 stars Useless
As a work of scholarship whose purpose is to provide an understanding of the the "...politics of industrial pollution", this book is nearly useless. The main problems are:1) undocumented assertions are made in every chapter, 2) terms which are critical to the book, such as "toxic" and "high cancer death rate", are never defined, and 3) the treatment is anachronistic throughout. It is difficult to believe that authors who make the statement, "...new classes of disease and damage to the body that are too subtle to even measure" (p. 296) actually know anything about the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read
I read this book about 2 years ago after my manager gave it to me. It is an excellent, non-sensationalized, review of historical actions of large corporations which compromised the public health of our citizens. It is well supported by cited references. A must read for occupational health professionals who are working to protect employees against little known hazards.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Service!
This is an extraordinary book. Unlike other books that address the corruption of industry, this book has the documents and information that you really need. Few stories of environmental duplicity ever provide this kind of detail and data.

But most importantly, it read like a detective story, which, in fact, it is! Bill Moyers is absolutely correct in his cover blurb! What a joy to read.

Product Description
This book provides a concise synthesis of how toxic chemical pollutants affect physiological processes in teleost fish. This Second Edition of the well-received Water Pollution and Fish Physiology has been completely updated, and chapters have been added on immunology and acid toxicity. The emphasis, as in the first edition, is on understanding mechanisms of sublethal effects on fish and their responses to these environmental stressors. The first chapter covers the basic principles involved in understanding how fish respond, in general, to environmental alterations. Each subsequent chapter is devoted to a particular organ system or physiological function and begins with a short overview of normal physiology of that system/function. This is followed by a review of how various toxic chemicals may alter normal conditions in fish. Chapters covering environmental hypoxia, behavior, cellular enzymes, and acid toxicity are also included. The book closes with a discussion on the practical application of physiological and biochemical measurements of fish in water pollution control in research and regulatory settings. ... Read more

Product Description
This invaluable volume, the third in the series "Air Pollution Reviews", addresses particular questions relating to air pollution and its effect on health. It deals with the impact of nasal disease on lung exposure, how pollutants are distributed within the lung, and the uncertainties with regard to defining the dose to the lung. It takes a tangential look at the lung dose by exploring the possibility of obtaining clues from occupational medicine. Toxicologically, the book examines the possible methodology for exploring how particles and their toxicity can be investigated, and looks into the cardio-toxic effects of air pollution. The effects of pollutant mixtures are compared with those of individual pollutants. In addition, the question of the importance of acid aerosols is tackled. Epidemiologically, the book deals with the problems associated with point sources as opposed to diffuse sources of air pollution, and consider whether the health effects of air pollution can be adequately quantified. These areas, though difficult, need to be addressed, in order to develop our knowledge of the health effects of air pollution. In this volume, a strong panel of authors treats the issues. They have raised questions but at the same time succeeded in solving a number of problems. ... Read more

Product Description

Marine pollution causes significant damage to fisheries and other economically productive uses of the ocean. The value of that damage can be quantified by economists, but the meanings of those valuations and how they are derived are often obscure to noneconomists.

Economic Losses from Marine Pollution brings a fuller understanding of the variety and extent of marine losses and how they are assessed to scientists, lawyers, and environmentalists by systematically identifying and classifying marine losses and relating them to models and methods of economic valuation. The authors use a step-by-step approach to show how economists have used these methods and how they approach the problem of assessing economic damage.

The book begins by describing the importance of economic valuation of marine damages, the history of concern over marine pollution, and the development of economic methodologies to assess damage from it. Following that, the book:

  • considers types of marine pollution and their effects on organisms, ecosystems, and humans, and the corresponding economic effects of those biological impacts
  • introduces the economic principles and methods needed to understand and to assess economic damages
  • expresses losses from water quality impairments in terms of economic value
  • introduces the basic economic techniques that have been developed and used to measure changes in economic value
  • discusses how to apply those economic techniques, and presents a variety of practical examples
  • explores limitations and problems that can arise in such applied work.

Economic Losses from Marine Pollution includes all of the relevant economic theory together with specific examples of how that theory has been and can be applied. It offers environmental professionals with little or no background in economics the basic economic tools needed to understand economic valuations of environmental damage, and represents a unique handbook for environmental and marine scientists, lawyers, economists, policy professionals, and anyone interested in issues of marine water quality. ... Most of the commonly read Greek texts address "pollution". The pollution theme appears in tragedies, historical texts, and political oratory.Purity is a constant concern in ritual texts, and Greeks underwent many small purifications in their everyday lives. Certain archaic religious movements even made "purification" the path to felicity in the afterlife. First published in 1983, Miasma is the first work in English to treat this theme in detail. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for understanding ancient concept of pollution
I really enjoyed reading this book.If you want to get inside the head of an ancient Greek, to understand what miasma was all about, then read this book.It has been beneficial to me in my practice of Hellnismos as well.It goes into detail about *why* washing your hands in the lustral water is important, etc. This notion now has a more central influence on the way I practice my own religion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Miasma -- Not for the Faint of Heart
"Miasma" (or me-ahz-MAH' as the ancients would say it, we think) is a subject and a book that will be of most interest to scholars of ancient Greek culture, religion and language, as well as to students of comparative languages and literatures. It is a dense but well-written text by Parker, an important and recognized scholar. Organized conceptually, the book begins with an introduction to related and apparently overlapping terms: miasma, agos, enages, katharsos, hosios, hagnos, and the like. These terms can be examined in terms of how they are thought to relate to birth/death rituals, lustrations, the shedding of blood, purification of holy sites, etc. This would be quite enough but Parker's erudition ups the book's score. He analyzes each concept and situation in terms of the various genres of his sources and in terms of the time periods in which tehy were written. These are the materials from which we have derived our notion of daily life in ancient Greece, and Parker is well-versed in the entire canon of Greek dramas, philosophy, history, cult records, oratory, mythology, and on and on. The author's observations and conclusions are surprising and very valuable not only because of his close and careful of the citations that illuminate his theories, but because the care taken itself reminds us of the danger of making broad assumptions based on a narrow review of primary sources. This is a major text in the field of Greek religion and it's been a long time coming.I wish he'd put forth his own hypotheses at the beginning of each section, which would make note-taking a lot easier, but it would deprive the reader of the carefully-reasoned arguments that lead him -- and us -- to his conclusions. Kudos. ... Read more

Nowhere is the conflict between economic progress andenvironmental quality more apparent than in the mineral extractionindustries. The latter half of the 20th century saw major advances inthe reclamation technologies. However, mine water pollution problemshave not been addressed. In many cases, polluted mine water longoutlives the life of the mining operation. As the true cost oflong-term water treatment responsibilities has become apparent, interest has grown in the technologies that would decrease theproduction of contaminated water and make its treatment less costly. This is the first book to address the mine water issue head-on. Theauthors explain the complexities of mine water pollution by reviewingthe hydrogeological context of its formation, and provide anup-to-date presentation of prevention and treatment technologies. Thebook will be a valuable reference for all professionals who encounterpolluted mine water on a regular or occasional basis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars curtain call...
Simply the best book on mine water treatment. Period.I have been a consulting engineer dealing with environmental problems for over 20 years now - and this is my "go to" book on the subject.

Yes, there is a high reliance on empirical equations...But the reality is that most data sets in the mine water remediation field do not allow a more detailed analysis.

Globally, the mining industry is grappling with a huge paradigm shift as remediation costs are increasingly internalized as part of the "cost of doing business" rather than a cost that can be (hypothetically) externalized and avoided.Mine waste projects typically deal on time scales of decades and centuries and this is where natural treatment solutions (like the ones described in this book) really come to the forefront.

If you are in the mining industry, or deal with mine wastes, you need this book on your shelf. If a better book can be written, I welcome the authors; otherwise I would consider this to be the best that can be written on the subject without a quantum leap in data collection.

Simply the best in the field; there are no encores.

Product Description

Indoor Air Pollution has become a major topic in environmental research and health. Most people spend more than 80 % of their time in buildings and are exposed to a broad range of pollutants from indoor sources like building materials, furniture, carpets and textiles, heating and cooking, household and consumer products etc. The volume on Indoor Air Pollution (IAP) provides a comprehensive review on the major indoor air pollutants: volatile organic compounds, biocides, indoor particles and fibres, combustion products and micro organisms and their metabolites. Sources and sinks of air pollutants in indoor environments and their chemistry are distinctly different from ambient air pollution even though the latter may influence indoor air quality. Adsorption and desorption processes, the pollutant source dynamics, gas phase reactions and kinetics + including the fate and final chemical destiny of chemically unstable intermediate compounds - are topics of scientific research as well as the evaluation of their sensory impact and irritation potential. Guidelines for assessing indoor pollution and a broad range of analytical methods have been recently developed and are reviewed by internationally renowned scientists. The specific characteristics of indoor air pollution in developing countries due to the widespread use of open fires for cooking, heating and lighting are analysed as well as the Chinese strategies to address the growing pollution problems by air pollution in its modern building stock.

Product Description
In 1996, after more than a decade of researching the effects of over-population and the consequent pollution of the greater metropolitan New York City area, Carl Sindermann published his observations and conclusions in Ocean Pollution: Effects on Living Resources and Humans, a mostly technical document that emphasized the pathological effects of coastal pollution. The stressed species inhabiting the coastal waters of New York Bight had been the subject of several laboratory programs, which when integrated with ongoing pollution studies, provided a superb opportunity to assess the effects of human impact upon a fragile coastal system.

Coastal Pollution: Effects on Living Resources and Humans is a highly lucid expansion and revision of that earlier book that preserves some of the technical aspects and enlightening vignettes recorded in the original. Organized into three distinct sections this work-
I. Recounts eight specific horror stories based mostly on the consequences of coastal pollution
II. Surveys the effects of coastal pollution on resource species such as fish and shellfish and marine mammals
III. Examines the effects of coastal pollution on humans

Sindermann ends the work by drawing conclusions and offering predictions for the future. Reflecting back over his notable career and beyond, the author ventures back as far as the 1950s in an effort to make readers appreciate the long historical record that is often forgotten due to our focus on the here ad now.

"Science practiced without occasional genuflection to its history is too flat and featureless - intense but without depth - stimulating but lacking an important link with the past. We can do better."

Intending to express insight that goes beyond the discussion of any one area, the author uses his experiences at the Sandy Hook laboratory as a lens to provide us with a poignant and well-documented understanding of the human impact on the inshore marine environment and its inhabitants, worldwide. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars basic research
Effects of Pollution on Fish: Molecular Effects and Population Responses by A. J. Lawrence, Krystal Hemingway (Blackwell Science) The impact of pollution on fisheries and the potential health implications of eating contaminated fish are areas of considerable concern for the fishing and aquaculture communities, government bodies and the general public. Pollution, as well as over fishing, may well be contributory to recent serious declines in global fish stocks.
Effects of Pollution on Fish brings together the work of many international experts each of whom have examined the literature on marine and freshwater fish and, where appropriate, invertebrates, to produce comprehensive chapters covering all major aspects of the impacts of pollution on fish and fisheries. The book describes these impacts in detail, from the molecular and sub-cellular level, through organism to population and community levels, and subsequently to socio-economic implications.
The editors of this thorough and timely book have drawn together contributions encompassing molecular genetics, biochemistry, physiology, population and community biology, and fishery economics. As such, this important book will be of great use and interest to students and professionals studying and teaching in all those subject areas. Fish biologists, environmental scientists and ecotoxicologists, marine and freshwater ecologists, fisheries managers, aquaculture personnel and fish farmers, as well as fish veterinarians will all find much of great value within this book. Libraries in universities, and research establishments concerned with these areas should all have copies of this book on their shelves.
The group of scientists involved in this book include individuals with expertise in each of the hierarchic levels of organisation on which pollution can impact. They encompass molecular geneticists, biochemists, physiologists, population and community biologists and fishery economics experts. Throughout the 2-year duration of the concerted action on which this volume is based, the group met on three occasions during which they worked on each of the thematic topics which form the basis to the chapters.
Chapter 1 introduces the subject and context of the volume. It also presents a conceptual model which was developed following the first meeting of the group in Oslo, Norway. The model presented in this chapter is a simplified version of that presented in the report to the European Commission. The model describes the way in which pollution may impact on a fishery and highlights the potential linkages between the various biological levels of organisation from molecular to community and economic. It is used to identify the direct links
The model additionally provides the framework around which the rest of the literature is presented in the book. Each of the following chapters were outlined at subsequent meetings of the group, first in Aveiro, Portugal, and later in Bilbao, Spain. The chapters represent linked technical themes which together describe the potential impact of pollution on a fishery. The chapters are designed both to describe the impact of pollution on the specific level of biological organisation and to highlight any linkages between this level and other, higher levels of complexity. The aim here was to confirm any pathways in which subcellular detection of pollution in the individual might lead to changes in population and community. A further important goal of the study was to identify and highlight any gaps in the literature that might help to direct future research in the field.
Chapter 2 reviews the forms of genetic damage that occur within the cell, either as a direct result of pollution perturbation or due to the production of genotoxic by-products of the detoxification process. Forms of damage include those caused by oxygen radicals, and the formation of adducts and mutations, together with direct effects on chromosomes. The chapter links genetic damage to examples of the consequence of this at higher levels of organisation from tumour formation, cell death, lesions, production of neoplasms, altered enzyme function and protein turnover rates. In addition, protection mechanisms are identified. This chapter is seen to have clear links with many of the other chapters within the book.
The links between molecular and cellular responses to pollution and the physiological response of individuals, including links to higher orders of organisation, are considered in Chapter 3. Principle components of this theme include the role of the lysosome and lysosome dysfunction related to altered rates of protein turnover and the energetic cost of altered gene expression. The chapter identifies links between these cellular events and organism effects including impacts on growth (including age/size trade-offs) and energy budget and scope for growth. Physiological effects examined included impacts on developmental processes such as osmoregulation, respiration and excretion, neuroendocrine and immune responses and impacts on reproduction.
Chapter 4 examines aspects of the physical health and immune system of fish in relation to pollution exposure and the links between these responses and those seen at higher and lower levels of organisation. Aspects of macrohealth considered include parasite load, presence of lesions and papillomas, spine and other deformities, anaemia, fin rot and fungal infection. These are examined in relation to cellular and molecular damage and the causative agents. Disorders are classified into pathological, physiological and developmental.
Chapter 5 considers one of the critical processes in the hierarchic chain of response through which impacts on the individual may be reflected in the population or natural homeostatic mechanisms override any pollution damage on the individual. Pollution impacts on reproduction and fecundity are linked directly to genetic damage in the gamete and impaired physiology through reallocation of energy. Additionally, the direct effects of endocrine disrupters on the reproductive process are considered. Evidence is reviewed on effects of pollutants on aspects of reproduction from egg size and viability to vitellogenic processes and fecundity.to pollution. Concepts of community structure together with functioning and effects of pollutants on these, through transfers of effects from cellular to individuals and then population and community, are considered in this chapter. The potential effects are analysed through the impacts on individual health in relation to condition and individual health in relation to production. Links between reproduction and population structure and survival to population yield are additionally reviewed. Production and yield are evaluated both in terms of quality and quantity of the population and quality of the individual.
The implications to population genetics and fitness as a result of pollution exposure, genetic damage, and cellular and molecular events are reviewed in Chapter 7. The theme reviews microevolutionary processes including mutation, selection, genetic drift and inbreeding. Sublethal responses and the potential for selection are examined, including fitness effects such as viability and fecundity. The literature on existing polymorphisms in pollutant metabolising genes is reviewed, together with the molecular basis of adaptation and the evolution of tolerance. The consequences of these adaptations in terms of reduced genetic heterogeneity and future fitness are considered.
Consequences of pollution impacts in relation to socio-economic effects are considered in Chapter 8. This incorporates the various bio-economic models currently employed b) fisheries scientists. These models give information on fish quality and population, both of which are impacted upon by the effects of pollution. An important element of this chapter is not simply the impacts of pollution of fish and fish quality, but also the perceived impacts and the effects that this can have on individual fisheries and the overall resource. Direct links between lower order effects and impacts on the market are highlighted. Human health consequences are additionally considered.
Finally, Chapter 9 summarises the evidence presented in each of the previous chapters with emphasis on the linkages identified between the hierarchic levels of biological organ. isation outlined in the conceptual model. The chapter highlights the areas in which recen advances have been made, as well as the aspects of the subject that require further study. It addition, it considers the limitations with current empirical approaches in quantifying some of the links in the hierarchic response from cell to population. The potential role of math ematical modelling in the field of ecotoxicology is briefly reviewed. In particular, recen developments and advances are outlined with regard to how models may be used to over come some of the limitations with empirical study.
