Tale of Pony Express as it should be told
Another outstanding book about the Pony Express.Exciting to read, I couldn't put it down.Full of interesting information I'd never heard before.A true living book.Must read for kids and adults.

Great read!
This is a great read if you like history, horses, adventure, or a well written page turner.Great for the home school and as a read aloud.I learned so much and I'm the mom!:-)Small but mighty book.

Engaging and entertaining book
Riders of the Pony Express is a wonderful book.My husband picked it up just to see what we were studying for our History.He had read the first two chapters and had to force himself to put it down; saying he didn't have time to get into a good book right now.My 11 y.o. son is devouring it and is asking for more books from Mr. Moody.

This is geat homeschool material
I read this for my homeschooling and it is very well portrayed. Characters are given a very fair amount of credit. There is allot of pony express books out there and I have to say this one is the most: Accurate(to my knowledge), exiting, well written, Keep you interested all around good book. This man is a wonder with writing. You never get board. This is written so well, it sounds like being a pony express rider was like today being a NASCAR driver. Well I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who is wanting to know more about the "Pony express" or for school (naturally).

This book and Author have been our summer reading list for my three boys, myself and my parents.My eldest at 8 read it himself I read it to the younger two and all were kept interested.After reading Moody's book on the Pony Express we were able to stop at a couple of relay stations and they already new so much. ... WESTERN HISTORY
This is a well-written, concise story of the short-lived Pony Express (about 18 months) from the Bison Press at the University of Nebraska. The riders were slim, hard-working lads not over 18 years old, and were expected to be expert riders and able to withstand hardships such as hostile Indians, foul weather, long days in the saddle, and often no estabished roads/trails with rest stops (or fast food) along the way. The 1860 route went from St. Joseph, Missouri to San Francisco, and included well-known riders such as Jack Keetley, Warren Upson,and the most famous of all, Buffalo Bill Cody,The reader will find that the Pony Express was finally put out of business by a scandal in Washington (sound familar?), cheaper mail delivery by stagecoach and later trains, and the completion of the transcontinental telegraph in 1861. Hoofbeats of Danger review
Annie's father Mr. Dawson owns a mail delivery company called the Pony Express and it's in the 1800's when one of the horses gets hurt her father blames it all on one person but he is Annie's friend and Annie knows her would never hurt a horse. How will she prove her friends innocents?

Hoof Beats Of Danger
Would you like to live in the west and work at red Buttes Pony Express Station? Well that's what happens to Annie as she goes through action, adventure and danger in HOOF BEATS OF DANGER by Holly Hugh's. This book is good for ages 9 and up. This book may not have pictures but the author describes the scenes so well you don't need them. So find out what happens to Magpie Annie's horse. I like this book a lot because it has a lot of action. The lesson or moral is love others.

Not great not wonderful just OK
11 year old, Annie Dawson lives in a mining cabin in California. Her father works for Oakland Pony Express. Lately, her favorite horse Magpie has been acting strange. Her father says that he has no choice, but to shoot her. Annie begins to protest and is sure that someone is poisoning Magpie. It is up to her to help save Magpie before it's too late. This book was a little bit boring and it strongly resembled other History Mysteries. The plot is always the same. Young girl who has a passion for something. Soon that passion is taken or trying to be taken away. The young girl tries to find out who is trying to take this away. In the end everything is perfect. After reading a few history mysteries, I am beginning to tire. The history mysteries that I suggest you read however are, Secrets on 26th street and The Smuggler's Treasure. All in all, however this book was good enough to rank 4 stars.

History Mysteries: A Good Series For Kids
I read "Hoofbeats Of Danger" with my nine-year-old daughter. It was the first book in this series we read together. Since then, we have read a couple of others in the series and I imagine we will get to all of them. I know my daughter is enjoying these books because she always wants to keep going when it's time to stop. These books have three very positive aspects to them. First, they are good stories. They hold kids' interest and make reading fun. Second, the young heroines in these stories make good role models for the real girls reading or hearing the stories. Third, they provide a small history lesson, imparting some insight into a particular period and place in American history.

"Hoofbeats Of Danger" takes place on the frontier at the time of the Pony Express. It involves a realistic look at frontier life and provides some factual information along the way. I highly recommend this book and, in general, the entire series, to parents looking for reading material for kids (especially girls) in the nine to twelve age group.

It was a good story about a horse and a girl.

Fatal flaw in key information, but still interesting
I enjoyed this book - it gave its own flavor to the story of how the Pony Express came about, and the personalities of the principals behind it. I also found it interesting that the authors found so much background information about many of the Pony Express riders themselves, who are seldom individually mentioned elsewhere.

That is why I was so surprised and disappointed to find that they had made a mess of the biography of the most famous Pony Express rider of them all. Robert "Pony Bob" Haslam has, in every book on this subject I've read which was published since the 1800's, been the rider who made the longest ride - made necessary because at stop after stop on his route, either the Indians had run off the stock or killed the stationmaster or his relief rider was afraid to take over. It is also standard, accepted knowledge that Pony Bob made the fastest ride while carrying the inaugural speech of Abraham Lincoln, at a critical moment in California's history as they decided whether to be slave or free. Robert Haslam, "Pony Bob", was known across the Southwest and indeed across the entire country simply by his nickname, and by his courageous history as a rider. So what is the problem with this book? All I can guess is that the authors inadvertently mixed up their notes when they compiled their manuscript, because they have attributed both of these famous rides of Pony Bob, to another rider named William Campbell. I have no doubt that Campbell also was a brave rider and deserving of respect and remembrance, but Robert "Pony Bob" Haslam deserves to have the recognition for those rides he made which simply and clearly exceeded any other records for speed or endurance. In fact, when delivering the inaugural speech of Lincoln on the last leg to California, Pony Bob was attacked by Indians and completed most of his eight-hour ride while seriously wounded, having been shot in the jaw and arm by pursuing Indians. Surely he deserves his due for such performance while injured.

Many riders faced dangers, incredibly hostile weather and riding conditions as they rode round the clock to keep the mail moving. I don't begrudge William Campbell his mention for his own particular exploits. However, Pony Bob died sick, poor, and nearly forgotten in Chicago fifty years after his famous Pony Express days, and he deserves to have his memory preserved accurately. Otherwise, this is a very interesting book.

Pony Express
I've read this book a number of times over the years and have always been amazed by the shear amount of information it contains on the Pony Express in its relatively short 200 pages. Not only do the Settles give a thorough history of the background and organization of the Pony Express, they also present detailed accounts of the men who rode the horses and carried the mail, of the hundreds of stations along the route and the people who operated them, and of many of the trials and tribulations the company faced during the 18 months of its existence. Prior to the Pony Express, mail was carried from St. Joseph, MO, to California via a circuitous route through Texas and the Southwest; a more direct central route was proposed with the idea of cutting delivery time in half from 20 to 10 days. The Russell, Majors and Waddell freighting company reluctantly assumed the venture, which sparked excitement in the imagination of the public, but was never very profitable and caused the company to lose a great deal of money. The service lasted from April 1860 to October 1861, when the completion of the transcontinental telegraph put it out of business. The Settles do an excellent job conveying not only the nuts and bolts of the operation, but also the dramatic human side of the riders and the dangers and obstacles they faced. It's a great little book, one that will remain on my shelf for a long time to come.

This is one of the best books I've read on the Pony Express. The detail in the early years of how Russell, Majors and Waddell ultimately formed their partnership was facsinating. This is an original source text by two eye-witnesses to the events. It's the one cited by everyone else. Eminently readable and informative. I belong to an old-west re-enactment group; this book was invaluable to discover what it was like in the few years before the railroads came, and after gold was discovered. Many of our towns in Colorado were built along the route laid out by these courageous pioneers and entrepreneurs. This is their story.
