Product Description
Difficult as it is for some to imagine what people relied on for home entertainment in the evening before television--it was that equally big medium, radio. Its programs were the precursors to the popular television sitcoms and dramas of today.

This work provides two main kinds of information: month-by-month prime time (7pm to 11pm) schedules from January 1929 through July 1961, for all national broadcasting networks, and a detailed listing of all network programming moves (from July 1926 until August 1967), including series premieres, cancellations, and time slot moves, plus a yearly recap of key programming moves. Only regularly scheduled series are included. Single event or special programming is not included. The book is divided into seven chapters, one for each night of the week; each chapter consists of individual month-by-month prime time schedules for each network followed by a detailed chronological listing of each of that network's series and programming moves. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Great Idea, Poor Execution
While a reference book that shows radio series airing days, times, and titles is a great idea, this book falls far short of being a reliable source of information. The day-network arrangement does have some advantages, but this arrangement makes it very difficult to view network schedules side-by-side to see which programs were aired opposite each other.

The main problem I have is simply with the accuracy of the information. There are too many mistakes!

Examples:

The author lists the series "21st Precinct" was on Saturdays during its July 1953 to July 1956 run.Actually, the series ran from July 1953 to November 1, 1956 and only 11 out of the 159 "21st Precinct" episodes aired on Saturdays.

The author lists the series "CBS Radio Workshop" as airing on Fridays at 8:30 P.M. from October 1955 thru November 1956."CBS Radio Workshop" actually began on January 27, 1956 and ran until November 02, 1956 on Fridays at 8:30 P.M.It was not cancelled, but rather moved to Sundays at 4:00 P.M. on November 04, 1956 until the end of the series on September 22, 1957.

Great Idea, Poor Execution.

3-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive - Yet Limited
This is a reference book only.It contains a series of grids listing prime time program for each day of the week, on each network over the years covered.Following each day-network grid, there is an itemized list of program schedule changes (time slots programs moved to or from). Each day-network grid continues over several pages. The grids are broken down by month.
The grid is somewhat complicated and awkward to use, but this may be inevitable given all the variables and detail covered. The day-network arrangement makes it especially difficult to view network schedules side-by-side to see which programs were scheduled opposite each other.
A major omission: Many programs are listed on by the "official" sponsor title (such as The Chase and Sanborn Hour, Fitch Bandwagon).Such titles often went through changes in talent and format over the years. It would be helpful to have some indication of which version of this title is being referred to (such as Bergen-McCarthy, Phil Harris-Alice Faye).
Similarly, news broadcasts are referred to only as "news."During this period, newscasts were usually highly individualistic summaries and commentaries. It would be useful to have the name of the newscaster listed. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Rekindling fond Memories
Read this book in one evening. Could not put it down. It is that good!! While I am far from a literary critic, Rene' "nails" it with an easing flowing, well-written memoir.Much of his book brings back so many memories of my childhood.I too grew up in the great community of Croton-on-Hudson and knew a few of the people in Rene's "documentary".

5-0 out of 5 stars Poignant and Honest memoir
I really enjoyed reading de le Varre's poignant memoir. He writes with a searing honesty about his challenges and triumphs.Rene is at his best when describing the family he obviously loves so much.Particularly in Andre, his father, the reader will discover an honest approach to a complicated relationship filled with anger and tenderness.

Reading de le Varre's book is one part history and one part travel adventure. His descriptions of both small town life and big time European travel and adventure fill the reader with thoughtful imagery.

I thoroughly enjoyed the trip.

5-0 out of 5 stars WE ALL NEED A ROAD MAP
I really liked the book.I think it is a good read for 1) people who know Rene 2) those from or living in Croton 3) interested travel readers 4) and, of course, those who deal with alcohol issues in their lives.

The descriptions and recent history of Croton is awesome.I liked the family backgrounds and also the European perspective which was detailed - especially Vienna, Austria.

It is very sad how things unraveled for Rene's Pop.The career achievements in film by he and his dad are well documented and should be!

Growing up in Croton? This book captured it for me.From Little League to hitting the bottom line on HS football when Croton was the worst team in the County and people in town started to get an inferiority complex that kids in Croton just could not compete with those in other towns! They really believed this. How about running the Croton River rapids?Imagine jumping off Quaker Bridge and floating down the Croton to Fireman's Island! And, the description of HS baseball was very good with the love of being out there playing and learning how to win.

Where was that Carvel stand?

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!
I loved reading about Rene's family dynamics, travel excursions throughout his life and in the end learning that he figured out to change his life by choosing a healthy addiction rather than the standard choice of unhealthy addictions. Most of us don't attain this insight of ourselves...
I am sad the book is over... it was a fun travel adventure as well as, life through the eyes of a runner.
LOVED IT!

Product Description
At the 1939 World's Fair and the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE), RCA introduced and promoted a novelty known as television. Two decades later, this technology was well on its way to permeating virtually every home in America and Canada as well, spawning a growing, thriving industry in the process. Canada's two official languages (English and French), easy transborder reception of U.S. broadcast television stations, and an overall television market approximately one tenth the size of the United States historically impeded the growth of Canada's television production sector. This situation led Canadian producers, directors, writers, performers, and other creative and technical personnel to increasingly turn their eyes--and their talent--to the international market. Canadians who had played a significant role in America's entertainment industry since the silent era, turned to their southern neighbor as the most natural market for their creative endeavors. With a mix of practicality, adaptability and entertainment ingenuity, Canadians became responsible for an ever-increasing percentage of American television productions. This volume traces the history of Canadian involvement in America's television production industry and looks at the genres, time slots and viewing areas of the first Canadian television productions to appear on U.S. airwaves as well as the challenges that producers had to overcome to take their programming into American prime time. The book also discusses the reasons Canadian television producers have turned to a foreign market over their domestic one. The main focus, however, is the factors which led to an independent television production sector in Toronto, Ontario, and the Ontario-based companies that have successfully competed in the U.S. marketplace. Alliance Atlantis Communications is given particular attention as one of Ontario's most successful production companies. Economic and political influences as well as current and future prospect ... Product Description

To what extent does the advertising industry control what we see on TV? What is the political and cultural environment that provides for the phenomenon of the corporate shaping of the mass media?Robin Andersen addresses these questions, which ultimately intertwine with the very concept of democracy: How can citizens participate in political culture when the information they receive through their mass media is molded by corporate and commercial demands? She discusses and analyzes the impact of the consumer imperative on popular news and TV programs and talk shows, the psychology of consumer culture, the differing narratives of the 1992 presidential election, how representations of the Gulf War resembled advertisements, and the overall escalating commercial imperative of the mass media. Andersen has done a splendid job of accessibly presenting to mass audiences and students a subject of enormous gravity—the steady penetration of marketing and advertising strategies into the very fabric of both news and entertainment television.

Product Description
Radio provided a new and powerful medium in1930s France. Devoted audiences related to and responded avidly to their stations' programming and relied on radio as a source of daily entertainment, news, and other information. Within the comfortable, secure space of the home, audio culture reigned supreme. In Programming National Identity, Joelle Neulander examines the rise of radio as a principal form of mass culture in interwar France, exploring the intricate relationship between radio, gender, and consumer culture. She shows that, while entertaining in nature and narrative in structure, French radio programming was grounded in a politically and socially conservative ideal.

In the early years of radio, France was the only Western nation--apart from Australia--to have both private and public radio stations. Commercial station owners created audiences and markets from a scattered group of radio enthusiasts, relying on traditional ideas about French identity, family, and community ties. Meanwhile, the government-run stations tried to hew an impossible compromise, balancing the nonpolitical entertainment that listeners desired with educational programs that supported state over private interests. As a public medium operating in a private space, radio could potentially cross normal gender and social boundaries. Programmers responded, Neulander shows, by restricting broadcast content, airing only programs deemed appropriate for a proper French home. Accordingly, radio culture espoused normative gender roles and traditional notions of the family.

Neulander analyzes radio program schedules and content, including plays and songs, and explains how programmers, governments, station owners, and average citizens fought over what was aired. On French radio, she shows, the best families had working fathers, homemaking mothers, and money in the bank. Indeed, for radio characters, bourgeois stability proved a prerequisite for happiness, and characters who did not fit the ideal often served as bad examples. Although the left-wing Popular Front controlled the French government during the late 1930s, both public and private radio portrayed the working class negatively--usually as buffoons or criminal characters. Indeed, Maurice Chevalier, better known today for his film career, first cultivated his working-class playboy image on 1930s radio and legendary radio artist Edith Piaf rose to fame singing tragic tales of prostitutes.

Neulander also examines French radio's ambivalent stance toward the colonial world featured in so many plays and songs. The colonies represented a perceived threat to the traditional French patriarchal family and home, so broadcasters stereotyped them as alien, often perilous spaces. Yet love songs by French-perceived exotic types like Tino Rossi proved wildly popular. The first work in English about interwar French radio, Programming National Identity reveals the persistence of conservative notions of family and nation that challenged the failing liberal democracy of the Popular Front at the end of the Third Republic. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Behind the Scenes of Media Programming
This is a very solid job at describing a constantly moving target. The authors (the first and third are at California State University-Fullerton, while Brian Gross teaches out in Jakarta and has enjoyed extensive experience in all three media) help to bring ever more important Internet content into the media mainstream with their treatment. Chapters cover the history of programming in all three services (and related areas such as video games), sources of television programming, sources of radio and Internet content, development of content for each of the three, testing of audience reactions, elements of successful programming, factors influencing television programming, factors impacting radio and Internet content, scheduling strategies for each of these services, program evaluation, changing and canceling programs, and ethical issues. The book is more descriptive than critical in approach, and helps readers get behind the scenes to better understand the players and process. ... Read more

This essay collection explores the phenomenon of "teen TV" in the United States, analyzing the meanings and manifestations of this category of programming from a variety of perspectives. Part One views teen television through an industrial perspective, examining how networks such as WB, UPN, The CW, and The N have created a unique economic framework based on demographic niches and teen-focused narrowcasting. Part Two focuses on popular teen programs from a cultural context, evaluating how such programs reflect and at times stretch the envelope of the cultural contexts in which they are created. Finally, Part Three explores the cultures of reception (including the realms of teen consumerism, fan discourse, and unofficial production) through which teens and consumers of teen media have become authors of the teenage experience in their own right. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book is worth gold
I can just say thanks to author for writing this book. If we have more books like this we wouldn't have so much frustration in everyday life. The book title might confuse the people about content and use of the book. But I would say that this book is for everyone who wants to know how e-mail works. If you are not programmer than just skip the code and read everything in between. The book is so good that even without that code part it would be still complete and excellent guide how e-mail works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great explanation of how email works.
I bought this because I wanted to understand how email gets routed around the internet using DNS. This book accomplished that. I found this book slightly better than David Wood's "Programming Internet Email" due to its coverage of DNS. However I'm glad I own both books.

I feel that I could write SMTP servers and mail clients etc. after reading this. Lots of great example code (although it is all in VB not C).

This did a great job of explaining the topics and then refers you to the RFCs themselves if you need complete detail.

2-0 out of 5 stars Superficial treatment
If you want to write a simple program that generates legal mail, then this might do the trick, but if you need to handle anything that is compliant with RFC821 or RFC822 or MIME, then you will be out of luck. You would be much better off with Internet Email Protocols: A Developers Guide by Kevin Johnson.See http://tinyurl.com/yvgra

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
I bought this book because I am writing an SMTP server. While I already had most of the code written, I was looking for "nuances" and anything I may not have thought of.This book provided a few extra bits of information that were helpful.

If I were writing any kind of mail client, this would be the *perfect* book for that. While it does include rudimentary code for various servers, they're woefully incomplete (as they probably should be for this type of book) and require a bit of extra work if you want to use them in a production environment.

As for the book itself, it is very well written and very easy to read. The VB code examples are helpful and enhance the text explanations very well.Had this book included a CDROM with the code (instead of making you search the web for it) I would have given it 4.5 stars.Add to that better code examples and a better discussion on server applications and it would have been 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal for anyone new to computer network development
John Rhoton's Programmer's Guide To Internet Mail will enable the reader to master the primary Internet mail and directory protocols, understand the interaction between Internet messaging clients and servers, be able to troubleshoot their way through email network problems, learn to message-enable networked applications, gain a protocol-based Visual Basic code, and in general, learn to program with mail message formats RFC822 and MIME; message transfer protocols SMTP and DNS, post office protocols POP3 and IMAP, directory protocols ASN and LDAP, as well as other leading protocols. Staging the Real traces the evolution of the various categories of "reality" programs which have come to dominate our screens over the last decade. The book focuses on issues such as the changes in the broadcasting environment which have given rise to such programs, the relationship they have to other popular TV genres and the huge appeal that shows such as Big Brother have for contemporary audiences. The book also seeks to measure the cultural significance of these new formats. Do they reflect a more general cultural malaise or should we measure their popularity more in terms of the changing expectations which modern audiences bring to TV entertainment?

4-0 out of 5 stars nice introduction
Gets you started with a lots of short examples. After reading this you'll probably want Advanced RenderMan, but this is a far easier introduction to the RenderMan world.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly produced, rushed to market
This book should have never been published in such
haste. The author lightly grazes on important topics,
offering just tidbits but nothing significant. Very few people
use the C API, I don't see any point in wasting space on this.
The images are terrible, lack detail, hard-to-follow and most are in black and white. The 'Suggested Activities', 'Summary'
and 'Related Commands' sections at the end of each chapter are a joke and are merely page fillers. Surprising that Springer-Verlag would let such a low quality publication slip through.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is Terrible!
This book is terrible. It tells you how to do the easy things, but nothing more. For harder things, it constantly tells you what is possible to do, but not how to actually do it.I would definately pick up a copy of "Advanced Renderman" or "The Renderman Companion" instead of this book!If you have any graphics programming experience, this book will not help you.

Product Description

Embedded computer systems are now everywhere: from alarm clocks to PDAs, from mobile phones to cars, almost all the devices we use are controlled by embedded computers. An important class of embedded computer systems is that of hard real-time systems, which have to fulfill strict timing requirements. As real-time systems become more complex, they are often implemented using distributed heterogeneous architectures.

Analysis and Synthesis of Distributed Real-Time Embedded Systems addresses the design of real-time applications implemented using distributed heterogeneous architectures. The systems are heterogeneous not only in terms of hardware components, but also in terms of communication protocols and scheduling policies. Regarding this last aspect, time-driven and event-driven systems, as well as a combination of the two, are considered. Such systems are used in many application areas like automotive electronics, real-time multimedia, avionics, medical equipment, and factory systems. The proposed analysis and synthesis techniques derive optimized implementations that fulfill the imposed design constraints. An important part of the implementation process is the synthesis of the communication infrastructure, which has a significant impact on the overall system performance and cost.

Analysis and Synthesis of Distributed Real-Time Embedded Systems considers the mapping and scheduling tasks within an incremental design process. To reduce the time-to-market of products, the design of real-time systems seldom starts from scratch. Typically, designers start from an already existing system, running certain applications, and the design problem is to implement new functionality on top of this system. Supporting such an incremental design process provides a high degree of flexibility, and can result in important reductions of design costs.

Analysis and Synthesis of Distributed Real-Time Embedded Systems will be of interest to advanced undergraduates, graduate students, researchers and designers involved in the field of embedded systems.
