Geography of Home has been hailed as "an appealing, insightful collection of musings on the architecture, psychology, and history of house and home in America" (Kirkus). Now available in paperback, Geography of Home reminds us that the house is home to many things. Far more than four walls and a roof, it contains our private and public lives, our families, our memories and aspirations, and reflects our attitudes toward society, culture, the environment, and our neighbors. In a literary tour of the spaces of our homes, noted design essayist Akiko Busch reflects on how we define such elusive qualities as privacy, security, and comfort. Part social history, part architectural history, part personal anecdote, this rich and delightful book uncovers the hidden meanings of the place we call home. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Grand Tour

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit thin for the price and for a Princeton book
I may be a bit hard on this book because I have written on similar subjects on Japan and I was expecting more insight. It's my hobby to read everything I can on how people live and so I was looking forward to this book. But if you have read on this subject in popular magazines, I suspect you will find that you already know much of what's in this book of essays. And it's only 160 pages with not a lot of print on each, so expensive.

My suggestion if you are interested in this subject is to start with Witold Rybczynski's HOME: A SHORT HISTORY OF AN IDEA, which Busch cites.HOME is insightful, well-researched, and as well written as Busch's easy read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute, but a little too precious
I found the core notion that our home designs don't fit our lives to be very interesting. But be warned that the book is a series of very personal, sometimes bordering on superficial, essays.Beyond the core notion, I didn't find much to relate to in Busch's observations about her own
(upper class, domesticated) life. She often makes blanket statements about how "we" live that more than once made me feel like she was writing for a whole other group of people I've never met. That said, if you do feel included in her blanket statements, you might love the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pithy Insights About Homes That Don't Fit Lives
This little book of essays is a fine read -- brightly written, free of the usual jargon, quick with insight. It helps the reader to understand why that expensively furnished living room lies silent while the kitchen bussles with everything but cooking. I enjoyed it immensely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming and provocative reflections on how we live
Bravo! Aki Busch takes us on a charming and provocative stroll both through her home and each of ours.Ever wonder why you still have a front door?Or whatever happened to the front porch?Or why your kitchen andclosets and garage are so essential?READ THIS BOOK and find out!! ... Read more

Product Description
This is a book about the population of London during the early modern period and a detailed book about the population of a European metropolitan city at that time. Much is now known about the historical demography of rural England, but very little is understood about the larger towns and cities. Roger Finlay applies new techniques in historical demography, principally family reconstitution and aggregative analysis of parish registers, to study the growth of population in London. He shows that parish registers are as reliable for the analysis of population trends in London as in rural England. The death rate was much higher in London than in the countryside, and this difference was not offset by a markedly higher birth rate, so the population would have declined but for migration. There were striking variations in both fertility and mortality between contrasting social areas of London. ... Read more

Zopf provides a comprehensive account of the biological components of mortality, its various forms and causes, and its many differentials. The study considers mortality among a range of populations, according to differentials such as age, gender, race ethnic origin, socioeconomic and marital status, and urban or non-urban residence. It also traces changes in the impact of degenerative afflictions, infectious and parasitic diseases, and environmental factors. The many graphs and tables provide succinct and clear evidence of current mortality trends, and the extensive bibliography adds to the value of this work as a research tool. ... Read more

Product Description
This unique and well-researched study takes a systematic look at the incredible rise in the life expectancy of the population of Albania, one of the world's poorest countries. Through a careful analysis of newly available archive documents and statistics, Gjonca examines the social, economic, and political factors behind the success of improving life expectancy at birth from 51 to 71 years in a relatively short period of time and despite extreme poverty and strict isolationist governmental policies. The research, obtained primarily from the Albanian State Archives, which opened in 1994, attempts to explain why the Albanian pattern of mortality, with very high infant and child mortality and very low adult mortality, is so different from that of other East European countries with similar social and economic conditions. Using many tables, figures, and other data to illustrate the trends, the author concludes that lifestyle factors, and to a lesser extent government policies directed at health care, are the most likely determinants of Albania's successful mortality transition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best demography books I have ever used.
This book is practically timeless! The formulas it contains cover just about everything you would ever need to do from a demographic standpoint. What is most rewarding is the practical approach the authors took in presenting the material. The scenarios and examples that they employ are practically exhaustive of the realworld problems demographers encounter in their work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the demography methods books
Plane and Rogerson are obviously professionals at the top of their field and it shows in their thorough explanations of current demographic analysis.Though it can get deep into some descriptions of some statistical outcomes, it doesn't leave out a thing. The various approachs to demographic methods and the background (why it's done this way) are all covered and the writing style is appropriate to the subject.I keep referring to this book to answer questions of clients who want to know "how it was done" when I give them their stats.I can highly recommend this book to anyone who is ready for the whole story on demographic research. ...
