3-0 out of 5 stars Very British, but good.
I agree with Robert Plamondon in that the book is full of British poultry regulations, but it still has a great deal of good information. I think it would be very boring, however, for the first-time poultry keeper in America. The basics on housing, sanitation, and the marketing of eggs were addressed rather well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting review?
I find it interesting that Robert Plamondon didn't like this book. Perhaps it's because he is the editor of a competing book which is recommended above instead of this one?

I haven't read this book, I'm trying to decide if I want to. It is recommended by Murray McMurray Hatchery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Free Range Poultry, by Katie Thear
This is a very comprehensive book written especially for those who are interested in getting started with free-range poultry.Although the author is British and writes for the British market, she still includes much information that is specific to regulations here in the US.Breeds; housing needs; land management; feeding; poultry management; eggs; table birds; breeding and rearing birds; showing birds; marketing; commong problems and diseases. The problems and diseases section could be a little more detailed, but for those just interested in learning about this way of raising poultry, they could easily take what they learn here and then have the knowledge to look for disease management books with more information.I highly recommend this book!:^)

2-0 out of 5 stars All About British Poultry Regulations
This book was a great disappointment to me. Instead of learning about free-range poultry, I learned more than I ever wanted to know about the astonishing overregulation of the British poultry industry. The topic is apparently too broad to leave much room to talk about poultrykeeping. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Anyone Putting Together Poultry Rations
A lot of poultrykeepers feel the temptation to invent their own chicken feed blend.Doing this successfully requires quite a bit of knowlege, and this book provides it.It's quite accessible to the interested layman, though it assumes you already know something about nutrition (for example, it doesn't explain what amino acids are or why you'd care).

Not as exhaustive as Ewing's massive and long-out-of-print POULTRY NUTRITION, but it's more up-to-date and far easier to use. ... Read more

Product Description
According to surveys, the public believes the chickens it is buying are wholesome. "Poultry Inspection: The Basis for a Risk-Assessment Approach" looks at current inspection procedures to determine how effective the Food Safety Inspection Service is in finding dangerous levels of contaminants and disease-producing micro-organisms. The book first describes the history behind the current system, noting that the amount of poultry inspected has increased dramatically while techniques and regulations have remained constant since 1968. The steps involved in an inspection are then described, followed by a discussion of alternative and innovative inspection procedures. It then provides a risk-assessment model for poultry, including sub models for each stage of processing. Risk assessment is used to protect health, establish priorities, identify problems, and set acceptable levels of risk. The model is applied both to microbiological hazards and to chemical contaminants. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!
As pastured poultry producers, this is our bible. We would not recommend anyone raising poultry without it. It is our go-to for everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for anyone raising poultry on pasture!
We've been raising chickens on pasture for 8 years and wish this was out when we started. This book is chocked full of resources and the hands on knowledge from many people out there raising poultry on pasture!
Well worth the investment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Hodge-Podge
This book is a compendium of wonderful information on almost every aspect of raising pastured poultry. Ideas and information on feeds, breeding, housing, processing, and even the business and insurance side of poultry farming are covered. It's well worth the money for any small-scale poultry farmer. The one downside is that, since it is a collection of articles published over several years, the information is sometimes incomplete, duplicated, or slightly disorganized. Don't expect it to be an easy reference book on any topic, but if you approach it as a wealth of great ideas from experienced farmers you won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of important info for small farmers
We've read Joel Salatin's book on pastured poultry. This book has articles by Mr. Salatin as well as pastured poultry producers from many other parts of the country. As a result you get a lot of of different methods to evaluate, some of which will work better for you in your location and climate than others. If you are interested in pastured poultry, but not very experienced, this book is a great investment.

Great resource and full of information, however I wished it had more pictures to show what they are talking about. ... Read more
