The book is a great resourse for beginners. The book has an excellent introduction on client/server technology and object-oriented programming. The authors did an excellent job to keep it simple and easy to follow atthe same time very effectively explained some very complicated concepts. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent PB7 reference for developers of all skill levels
This is an excellent resource for Powerbuilder developers.Though the title indicates that it's for advanced users, I think that any developer will find this book to be quite useful... so don't let the word"advanced" intimidate you (the first part of the book covers thebasics, if you need a review). On the other hand, those developers whohave been using powerbuilder since the days of the dinosaur will get a lotout of this book. The author covers several advanced development issuesthat aren't discussed in most PB books. This book is well written &organized, and has a ton of examples.Highly recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, a direct path to PowerBuilder programming.
We just completed a week training with this book (though we're using PowerBuilder 8), with updates provided by the author. The entire class was up to speed so that on the 5th day, we were actually working on the new application system. As we worked through the examples in the book, I kept seeing examples of functions that we had planned and would need in the application, so I started cutting and pasting the code, objects and sometimes entire windows into our new application. I'd guess that as much as 70-80% of the completed application will be derived directly from this material, so in my view, the book proved worth it's weight in gold (training and function for our company). The support and advice from the website has been very useful also. In all, highly recommended, has saved us weeks if not months of development time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Paperweight.
Although this book provides a mildly structured approach to attacking powerbuilder, it lacks any qualitites one should look for as a developer.Index is lacking, poor examples, the order in which it presents its information is rather poor.Highlights of the book: it doesn't go in depth with much, and were it not so poorly written, it could be a good beginners manual.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lacking in total usefullness
If you purchase this book hoping to use the CD to follow the examples; DON'T.I tried to install the material following the author's instructions and had no success. When I e-mailed the author with an description of theerror message; I received a non-response.I now have 1200 pages thatshould be tied to a working database to assist me in my development whichnow will not happen.Wait for the movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best I've Found
I am relatively new to PowerBuilder having been in an actual production environment (outside of college) for about 7 months now and have read everything I can find on PowerBuilder. This is by far the best book I havebeen able to find. The author explains its capabilities clearly and theexamples actually match the lesson.Far too often the examples brieflytouch the subject and you finish a book no better off than when you began. Not so with this one.I highly recommend it for beginning PowerBuilderdevelopers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for developers of all levels!
PowerBuilder 6 A Developer's Guide is a must have. There are example code with real world solutions to real world applications. You can immediately piece together a complete system by using the techniques used in the manysample applications provided on the enclosed CD.

Product Description
Serving as an introduction to the PowerBuilder developer who has no experience of distributed technologies or Jaguar CTS, this book focuses on component development using Jaguar with PowerBuilder and shows what it takes to build an application.Code samples to guide developers in each step of the process are included, demonstrating how skills in Internet and distributed technologies can be gained using Jaguar CTS and PowerDynamo. This book covers all of the steps involved in applications development, from setting up the development environment to deploying a production application.Amazon.com Review
Written for the PowerBuilder programmer or IS manager, Jaguar Development with PowerBuilder 7 shows off the strengths of Sybase Enterprise Applications Server (EAS) and Jaguar CTS to create scalable database applications in PowerBuilder.

This book focuses on several aspects of the new PowerBuilder. First it explains the advantages of Jaguar CTS for distributed computing. Sections on transaction processing and resource management (for database connections and object pooling) show why PowerBuilder components get a new lease on life for today's enterprise through Jaguar. Early chapters show off the strengths of Jaguar CTS (which Sybase is bringing to all major platforms, including Linux). There's coverage of common administrative tasks, such as installing components on the server.

Later sections are geared more toward the PowerBuilder programmer. The author provides a guide to creating Jaguar-compliant PowerBuilder objects that will run on the middle tier. Sections on database support show off how to use DataStore to retrieve records from databases on the server. There isn't much on creating HTML-based or Java interfaces here (though that is a possibility with PowerBuilder 7). Instead, the book looks at creating PowerBuilder clients that hook into Jaguar components on the server.

In all, Jaguar Development makes a good case that PowerBuilder is ready to take on enterprise computing. For any manager or programmer with legacy PB code, this book will certainly be a welcome release. It gives you what you need to know to design and run your PowerBuilder objects on the powerful Jaguar CTS middle-tier solution. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: Enterprise computing overview, two-tiered and multitiered system architectures, Sybase Enterprise Application Server (EAS) and Jaguar Component Transaction Server (CTS) basics, CORBA, Jaguar CTS administration, Jaguar Manager, designing PowerBuilder 7 Jaguar components, connection caches, Jaguar component lifecycle, instance pooling, Jaguar database programming: Embedded SQL, DataWindows, DataStores, result sets, transactions, security, deploying Jaguar applications, and asynchronous processing in Jaguar. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good - but outdated...
This book was written for PowerBuilder 7 (now 7.03) and Jaguar CTS 3.0 (now Sybase Enterprise Application Server 3.6.1.08). While PowerBuilder hasn't changed much EAS most *certainly* has. When Jaguar 3.0 came out there was no database persistence standard for the Java platform, EJB was barely a spec (v 0.4), and a lot of things that we take very much for granted in the J2EE Specification simply didn't exist. Also, Jaguar 3.0 was a much 'clunkier' system to administer than that newer 3.6.1 release that Sybase has done. While many of the concepts discussed in this book from the PowerBuilder side are still applicable, some of the screen shots and processes are dated on the Jaguar side. Still, the book represents a good history lesson if nothing else. Being that this is the *only* book on the subject of using PowerBuilder as a front end to your Jaguar/EAS server-side code I'd say get it. But it's quickly become in *dire* need of a revamp. Are you listening, Mr. Barlotta??

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for PB developers moving ahead with EAServer
This book can get you started just in the way you would like to. Mike understands what PB developers need to get started with Web development and Jaguar. Although EAS versions have changed, but the basic concepts suc as "stateless/stateful, instance pooling, transaction support, connection, etc" remain the same. This book is not for Java with EAServer - this is PowerBuilder with EAServer - as the name suggests.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book on the Subject (but got sacked after I read it)
The site was going to use PB7 and Jaguar - exciting!I ordered the book, read it, used the many fantastic code bits to get an n-tier PB7 app up and running.Fantastic book.

4 months later, the client decided to use Java, scrap PB development and sacked me without even a day's notice.Oh well. Istill think Jaguar and the book and PB7 are tops! But the lesson learnedis that Powerbuilder is on the way down and out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant, well written
Excellant guide to getting started with Jaguar.Written for those users who know PowerBuilder and need to move to Jaguar. No distributed PB knowledge is required - Barlotta explains everything you need to know inplain english.

The time it will save you in figuring out what you aredoing is well worth the cost of the book and more.

The examples in thebook are good and source is available on line. The only complaint I wouldhave is the code on the web is not organized in the zip file as well as itcould be, but the author mentioned he was going to work on that.A littlesearching will find the code you need.

If you are thinking of doingdistributed or web based applications using Jaguar, buy this book today.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exceptionally well formatted publication.
I've been developing applications for over ten years. This book stands out as one of the best I've ever owned. It's very honest about how familiar you'd better be with PowerBuilder if you expect to use this book. Theauthor takes into consideration the probability that you're new to Jaguarand yet doesn't 'dumb down' his guidance. It takes you through anexplanation of CORBA, distributed processing, and gets you using Jaguarimmediately. Excellent coverage of the administration of and developmentusing Jaguar. If you plan on using EAS to build distributed apps, I highlyrecommend you read this book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Junk
Picked up this book in the clearance bin at a technical bookstore close to my work place for Five Dollars. I thought I had an incredible bargain in my hands until I read the book. What a piece of trash! I do a lot of Objectoriented coding with Powerbuilder on WindowsNT4.0. I was interested in thedesign patterns & OO programming techniques that the authors say thatthey are covering in the book in the preface. I have already read thePatterns book by Erich Gamma/John Vlissides and I was interested in how theauthors might have applied those techniques with PowerBuilder. It was amajor disappointment for me when I discovered that the authors had no clueof OO programming and a very bad understanding of Patterns in particular. They seem to know enough about Powerbuilder, but they are totally ignorantof OOP and patterns.

I spent only five dollars to buy this book but stillI feel ripped off. BUYER BEWARE!

1-0 out of 5 stars WROX - Shame on you
How WROX decided to push this terrible piece of writing on their readers is beyond my comprehension. I am a senior Sybase/PowerBuilder programmer, and I felt like laughing at the inaccuracies and inconsistencies that Iconstantly encountered in this stinker. When I read the reviews at Amazonthat this is a great OOP/Design Patterns book, I was intrigued enough tosnap up a copy. I am a great fan of using Patterns in my code. But theauthors of this book give a completely uneducated and uninformed writing onthis complex subject. Coders who are experienced in Patterns/OOP will laughat this garbage. Novice programmers will be misled completely. I will neverbuy another WROX title again. My guess is that the reviewers who gave thisturkey 5 stars must be friends of the author.

1-0 out of 5 stars Utter waste of money and time - stay away
I bought this book based on the reviews at amazon. The time I spent on this book could have been better utilized elsewhere. The author tries to talk about powerbuilder/OOP/design patterns/ActiveX/OCX/VB and so onwithout anygrasp of the concepts underlying any of these technologies andmethodologies. The result is a hopeless morass of confused ramblings withno direction. I wonder how some of the other reviewers gave this sorryexcuse of a book 5 stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good book - poorly written
This book pretends to teach advanced OO and design patterns and falls woefully short. The authors don't have any grasp over the fundamentals of OO. Don't waste your money on it.This book isn't worth the paper it isprinted on. There are better books on powerbuilder. If you want OO ordesign patterns pick up the books by Booch or Gamma et al.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good guide to OOP using PowerBuilder5.0
I have my improved my OOP skills afterreading this book. The coverage on nonvisual user objects, OLE ,application framework design and OOAD are excellent. It would have been even better if the PFC chapter is elaborated

Waitng for their new release on PowerBuilder. A must have in your library ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars TEACH Yourself PowerBuilder 5.0
Parts of the book are really good. But I have found errors in the code and steps were left out while descriping the process of adding controls to windows. All of this leaves you confussed. The author should have worked the code just as he is explanning it to ensure that it works correctly.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed!
The author covers just about everything in PowerBuilder but that's about it. Lots of typos and his explanations aren't clear or confusing in his topics and examples. Seems like the author rushed to get the book printed or didn't care enough to do a good job. I'll need to buy another PowerBuilder book to supplement what's lacking in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, althought it needs proofreading!
If you're a programmer new at Powerbuilder 5. This books is for you. Be warned that there are errors associated with this book.Plenty of typos causing compilation errors. If you're an optimistic coder, this book will be benificial as you find typo problems, fix them, red-line the errors in the book and learn along the way.If you're a pessimist, you'll SCREAM!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Do you enjoy frustration?
If you're new to PowerBuilder but have programming experience, you might be able to learn something from this book.

If you're new to programming, pass this one up entirely.

The author has some very good concepts to teach and covers PowerBuilder features well. However, the example programs in the book DO NOT match the program listings on the disk and the author has a tendency to jump ahead of the reader in the examples. This causes compiler warnings that are not explained. If the reader is willing to put up with the frustration involved, there are some valuable lessons to be learned by printing out the disk source code and comparing it to the text.

All in all, the author has the right idea, but extensive proof-reading and editing are necessary before it will become a useful text for those wanting to learn PowerBuilder

Advanced PowerBuilder 5 Techniques gives you detailed coverage of all aspects of PowerBuilder, including all the new enhancements to Version 5. Concentrating as much on the "why" as on the "how to" of developing with PowerBuilder, the authors provide in-depth, practical coverage of:

  • Distributed PowerBuilder and PowerBuilder Foundation Class (PFC) Libraries.
  • PowerBuilder development environment —DataWindows, Multiple Document Interface, menus, user objects, graphs and reporting, debugging, printing and file I/O.
  • Interfaces between PowerBuilder and external tools and resources, such as eMail interfaces, ORCA, OLE Custom Controls (OCXs), and 32-bit DLLs.
  • Database connectivity covers ODBC, SQL Anyware, and the various relational database management systems (SQL Server [Microsoft and Sybase], Oracle7, and Informix).
  • PowerBuilder software migration, project standards and naming conventions, testing applications, and many other key system administration issues.

On the CD-ROM, you'll find a working demo of ObjectComposer, the PFC application generator, in addition to source code for 16- and 32-bit ORCA.
