5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource on EAServer/Jaguar CTS
A must have book for all EAServer/Jaguar CTS developers. It covers in detail about the development & production strategy. It helps to achieve a good component design. I have implemented the Momento Class component design in my project from this book. It also covers extensively the usage of PowerDynamo along with Jaguar CTS. I strongly recommend the EAServer community to buy this Book to ease their development effort. Looking forward to see more books on Sybase tools. Well done Mike & Jason Weiss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Read for Sybase Tools User
I give the authors of this book a thumbs up for giving the Sybase Tools programmer a useful book for understanding the EAServer environment. It is easy to read and follow. An intermediate PowerBuilder / Java developer will find it helpful.I really like the section on using PowerDynamo with EAServer.I would guess that Michael Barlotta only carries over about 25% of the material he covered in his first Jaguar book. The Sybase community needs more books like this one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book. Worth reading cover to cover.
I almost did not buy this book. I read the reviews and the book received a pretty bad review from one reader. Fortunately I found it in the book store and took a look at it - I was impressed. This is a pratical book forexperienced developers, not Sybase promotional literature. It covers a lotof advanced material (with examples) and the authors seem to speak fromexperience. I took a look at the reviews again an noticed the poor reviewwas from a reader in public school. So I guess I you should not buy thisbook if you are learning PowerBuilder. I DO recommend the book forexperienced developers.

5-0 out of 5 stars I really found this book useful.
There are in-depth chapters on distributed PowerBuilder applications and building multi-lingual applications. These two topics are of interest to me. The chapters walked me through all the steps to distribute anapplication and to make our application multi-lingual. There are a lot ofsamples and the code is really simple to follow. There is also a lot ofcoverage of other "Enterprise" issues.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for developers!
This text is very insightful and wounderfully written, however, I would consider using this book solely for lectures and theory. There are very few examples and and many topics are simply glossed over.If you wouldlike to have a great deal of "head knowledge" in regards toPowerBuilder, this is the text for you.If you are a hands on developer, this book will leave you stranded, smart, but stranded! If you have a needto go into a meeting knowing all the buzz-words and PowerBuilderees, buythis book.

If you want to develop systems for your clients, keepsurfing!

The author did say that "this is not a tutorial", he'sright, it's not a tutorial, it's not even a reference text.Save yourmoney!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great coverage of a lot of advanced topics.
I really liked the book. It has a lot of good ideas about distributed applications, internet applications and powerbuilder 6. There is also a lot about Oracle and Sybase. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to PowerBuilder
This book is a great help to anyone starting out in PowerBuilder. This book covers a lot of PowerBuilder fundamentals as well as basic programming techniques. It is a really useful guide to working in PowerBuilder if youare still new to it, and it is much easier to find answers here than in thepowersoft newsgroups. The style is quite readable and a lot more human thana lot of other tech-oriented books. Definitely worth checking out- althoughprobably not useful if you are already a guru.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Reference for PowerBuilder developers
This book is a perfect desktop reference for novice and experienced PowerBuilder programmers alike. Many times I've spent hours trying to do something or understand something in Powerbuilder.Because PowerBuilder issuch a big complex tool, sometimes it's very difficult or impossible tofind a solution in PB's online help and documentation. Many times I canonly vaguely remember what magazine or user group provided a cleversolution to a head scratching problem. So, I was glad to get my hands onMr. Hatton's book which is filled with nuggets of information that willsave PB programmers a lot of time.I've been a full time PB programmer for3 years and I keep this book right next to my computer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Quick PB6 reference
As a programmer who started with PB5, had to do a project in PB4, and is currently developing in PB6, I found this book to be a great referential starting point. Without having to pore through the massive, sometimessilly, Sybase support pages, and every PB developer's website (usuallyhaving the same 2 or 3 tips as all the rest, and never updated) this is agreat way to have a lot of commonly asked questions answered immediately. Ranging from strange bugs (i.e. the amazing shrinking detail band) in PB,to PowerBuilder-specific constructs, to clean coding advice in general, this book answers a lot of questions that you need to know, but might be alittle embarrassed to ask. Plus, you never get flamed for asking abeginners' question! While it isn't a PowerBuilder be-all end-all, it is afriendly and insightful starting point for someone who would like to breakfree from using only MS dev tools. A good read, too.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't even bother!
I wish there was a rating for 0 stars. This book rates that.Thequestions and the answers are extremely superficial.Over 80% of the bookis an almost word for word copy of questions and answers that can be foundin numerous online forums and maling lists.I don't mind having all of thetime and effort I've put into providing answers to questions used to solvetheir problems.(Many of these answers appear in this book.)But, Istrongly object to someone taking my work and effort and trying to make aprofit from it, especially when it is offered for free elsewhere. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Overall the content was very good but too many errors
The content of the book was good.Overall I am pleased with it.The one flaw I have with the book is the number of errors in it.These errors range from spelling errors to grammatical errors to mislabeling of figures(charts) to errors in some of the coding examples.I would have expectedthe book to have been edited a little better than it was.I would haverecommended the book but the publishers need to do a better job editingfuture editions.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good book
Derek Ball brings PB to developers in a comprehensive, straight-forwardmanner. The well-done organization, format, and figures make this guideworth reading from beginning to end. The Developer's Tips and appendicesare truly useful tools and compliment the main text. Also, this guide'sthorough index makes it an excellent reference. The only reason I didn'tgive it a ten is that it's weak on external DLL information, but then so isevery other PB book I've found. Of the current PB books available this is,by far, the one I use most.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource book!
I found this to be an excellent book covering many intermediate and advanced topics. This book is definitely not for beginners unless you already have programming experience using Visual Basic, etc.The coverage of changes in PowerBuilder 6.0 with it's migration issue warnings is very helpful. I'm looking forward to using items mentioned in our applications. This will definitely be one of my well used books.

2-0 out of 5 stars Past it's prime
This book was written in 1994. The information is very out dated. It's a book written from a person with mainframe experience wanting to learn about client server. Some of the information is still correct, but for instance, the author claims that in 5 years (by 1999) there will be no mainframe computers and everything will be client server! Not the book for me. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good and easy reading book
I have read this book and I found it very useful for those who are beginning with internet projects (like me). It will explain step by step how to build good and efficient programs. The reason why I rated 8 is because the book doesn't explain too much (at all, in fact) the problems of database connection, and maybe it needs a little more explanation of features like mixing Java (not JavaScript) with PB and so on. Anyway, it's a very good book.Buy it, and learn. ... Read more

Excerpt: ABAP (Advanced Business Application Programming, originally Allgemeiner Berichts-Aufbereitungs-Prozessor, German for "general report creation processor" ) is a very high level programming language created by the German software company SAP. It is currently positioned, alongside the more recently introduced Java, as the language for programming SAP's Web Application Server, part of its NetWeaver platform for building business applications. Its syntax is somewhat similar to COBOL. ABAP is one of the many application-specific fourth-generation languages (4GLs) first developed in the 1980s. It was originally the report language for SAP R/2, a platform that enabled large corporations to build mainframe business applications for materials management and financial and management accounting. ABAP used to be an abbreviation of Allgemeiner Berichtsaufbereitungsprozessor, the German meaning of "generic report preparation processor", but was later renamed to Advanced Business Application Programming. ABAP was one of the first languages to include the concept of Logical Databases (LDBs), which provides a high level of abstraction from the basic database level(s). 4-0 out of 5 stars I liked it
I knew very little about the PFC.This manual did an excellent job of explaining each service and its functions. This manual is much better than the PFC information that comes on the PB disks. This manual is notreference manual, it is a LEARNING GUIDE.I highly recommend this forsomeone not familiar with PB and wants to learn the PFC.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!
The directions in the book are confusing.Unless you have LOT of time to devote to deciphering what they are telling you to do you'll never be able to figure it out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad if you need a crash course on the PFC
I thought the examples were very good. The book does a good job helping the student build simple PFC applications. On the downside, you have to be careful and use the libraries the ship with the book. Some chapters usedifferent lib paths. At first I had problems and had to call the publisher.Once this was worked out all was OK (in all fairness, on the first page, the book DOES tell you what libs to use for each chapter. But who REALLYlooks at directions!).

I have been developing in PB for three years, andthis is my first dive into the PFC. This was a good place to start. Don'texpect the book to be a reference though. It does a great job of'scratching the surface', but really is not a reference.

All in all, highmarks

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on this book.
I am a consultant who has been developing applications using PowerBuilder for the last 5 years who has never used the PFC; so, I thought this would be a quick way to learn it.However, the book has directions that don'tmake sense and the first time I did an exercise, it failed with a badruntime reference. It might be a good companion book if you're actuallytaking the class; at least you can ask the instructor why things aren'tworking. But to buy the book as a vehicle to learn the PFC, it's useless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow PFC programming manual
Good 'guided tour' of the PFC. The author does a good job explaining HOW to implement it by going through examples. This book cuts right to the chase. There is no fluff, little arcane theory, just plain language. GoodJob. ... Read more
