Product Description
Deep Nutrition illustrates how our ancestors used nourishment to sculpt their anatomy, engineering bodies of extraordinary health and beauty. The length of our limbs, the shape of our eyes, and the proper function of our organs are all gifts of our ancestor's collective culinary wisdom. Citing the foods of traditional cultures from the Ancient Egyptians and the Maasai to the Japanese and the French, the Shanahans identify four food categories all the world's healthiest diets have in common, the Four Pillars of World Cuisine. Using the latest research in physiology and genetics, Dr. Shanahan explains why your family's health depends on eating these foods. In a world of competing nutritional ideologies, Deep Nutrition gives us the full picture, empowering us to take control of our destiny in ways we might never have imagined. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this and take charge of your health!
As a young woman with an eventual family on my mind, this book is invaluable to me. Misconceptions I have held about dairy and its place in the human diet have been shattered, and not because of one person's opinion, but because of the factual and scientific nature of the book. So many 'health' books nowadays are based solely on opinion and misinterpreted data. Deep Nutrition is a breath of fresh air because it teaches, on the basis of science, why certain foods (like raw dairy) are truly invaluable aspects of a healthy diet.

I would urge everyone, especially young couples thinking about starting a family, to read this book. Not only will it help you to change your health today, but the health of your future children and even grandchildren. Dr. Shanahan does an amazing job of getting to the root of true health and sharing it with the reader, and she's right: Your body NEEDS the traditional foods of generations past. Read this book and see!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a "life changing ' book
I'm not going to try and re-write this book into a few paragraphs.I just want you to understand that if there is only one book that you are able to purchase or read this year for your health (or a loved one's) this is the one that I'd hope you read.

Once you get into the 'meat' of the message, you will understand what our forefathers and grandparent ate wasn't by mistake. It will resonate, and make perfect sense to you...you will understand the profound benefits of eating the proper food/nutrition needed to take control of your health. It's not a difficult concept. We just need to be un-brainwashed and think logically again.

I won't kid you, the book can and will get a bit scientific in parts, but as a whole, it's an easy, interesting read that will change your perception of health and nutrition. THAT alone should be incredibly interesting.

Take charge of your life, health and nutrition.Read the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I would love to shake her hand!
There is nothing better than the combination of sound medical/ science information coupled with respect for the wisdom of our ancestors regarding our nutrition. Here's a book that will tell you why, in medically precise ways, your ancestors (maybe as recently as your grandparents) had a different respectful approach to food, and its preparation, that had an intimate connection to health at any age. There are essential factors all traditional cuisines have in common, no matter where they came from. She then compares/contrasts our fast-food, low-fat, carbohydrate laden food choices and the resultant up-welling of diabetes, obesity, heart disease and stroke.

Ultimately Dr. Shanahan's book is deeply informative about how our current nutritional trends effect physiologic function, right down to the cellular level, and every body tissue. Our ancestors may not have been able to articulate why traditional world cuisines worked, but they could see the results in their beautiful children having strong straight bones, straight strong teeth who grew up to be healthy strong members of their societies. Dr. Shanahan will lay it out for you ever so clearly and how you can recapture that ancestral food wisdom and scrap the health draining trends of the last 60 years that have only caused an increase in obesity, diabetes, heart disease, stroke and a nation dependent on pharmaceuticals to cope with the end results of the government/ AHA/ ADA backed food pyramid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! A Great Read on Nutrition-Thank you!
A great read, very informative, lots of nutritional information that gave me plenty of "food for thought", and encouragement to take responsibility for what I am putting into my mouth!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Book I've Ever Read That's Changed My Eating Habits
Thoughtful, thought-provoking and approachable, Deep Nutrition presents a universe of ideas that possess the rarest of qualities: obvious and eye-opening at the same time. Cate and Luke delve into concepts of food as information for our genes, the relationship between the health and beauty of our bodies and the health and beauty of the environment in which they function, disease and nutrition, and the collective wisdom (which they term the Four Pillars) contained in traditional cuisines to deliver a compelling read.I came away from this book motivated in a way I never have before to change my diet. And by "change" I don't mean merely to think about changing it, but to actually change it.They shine a sorely-needed spotlight on vegetable oils and sugars, and explain in accessible terms why these twin poisons are so harmful and so ubiquitous. For a long time, my reaction to books proposing eating in a slower, wiser and healthier way was "yeah, that's a great idea, but it takes time I don't have." I have come to realize that that's the whole point -- things that are important should take time. Moreover, as with any change in habits, a new way of thinking becomes automatic over time. This book makes sense. It resonates. After reading this book, you'll never view a trip to the supermarket the same again... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissatisfied
I ordered this book. Never received it and could NEVER get a hold of someone to fix the problem. I just ended up getting my money back...

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I bought many pregnancy books and this is the only one I loved it. It is useful not only for pregnancy but also in order to know which vitamins, foods, minerals are necessary and where can you find them.
It is very easy to read also.
I recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Spectacular
I bought this small guide thinking it would clarify exactly what I should be keeping in mind nutrition-wise being 3 months pregnant ( I had found What to Expect's nutrition section somewhat hard to follow). This very short book had a LOT of repetition and, in some instances, displayed a poor editing job (under the heading of Peanut Allergies you will find the suggestion that you should really eliminate fish, eggs and cows milk from your diet to avoid exposing your baby to some common allergens--whether during pregnancy or while breastfeeding is unclear, while a chapter ago the book strongly advocated 12 ounces of fish per week). All in all, this book did have good information and good looking recipes (hence the three stars) but could have been much better, and I did not find that the quality justified an $8 price tag. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars NEVER GOT IT
I paid for the book, but never received the book. I will never buy from this person again and I do not recommend you buying from them either. Unless of course you like giving your money away. It has been over a month since the purchase. I should have given seller no stars- I can't take the one back.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Reading...But...
This book was interesting and informative... however I was disappointed because I was hoping for suggestions on sample menus and recipes.
I wanted it to help me get the nutitional changes by body needs during pregnancy.
The book tells you technically - nutrient by nutrient what you need... but I didn't find it to be translatable easily into my daily meal planning.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time & money
I could not have been more disappointed in this stupid stupid book.I purchased it during my first trimester and could not believe how worthless it was.Essentially, the book's mantra is "follow the food pyramid."What to eat in the second trimester?"Follow the food pyramid!"What to eat post-partum?"Follow the food pyramid!"They could have simply printed a one-sentence flashcard rather than a book. The book lacked detail and cohesion. It was poorly written and simply annoying.Any single issue of any pregnancy magazine can give you every bit of information offered in this useless book.

1-0 out of 5 stars I agree with the review below.
Don't waste your money. My book will immediately be placed in the Goodwill sack.

Don't waste your money. My book will immediately be placed in the Goodwill sack.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
I bought this book when I was about a month pregnant and I haven't been able to use it once. It's not written in an organized manner, the diets they suggest are too hard to follow and unrealistic for the average working woman. I was also looking for a month by month suggestion of what to eat or even by trimester and this book didn't have it. It's too complicated. I was better off just asking my doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference guide for pregnancy and for life
I got this book as a preface to actually getting pregnant in an effort toimprove my eating habits.Much to my delight, I found that this book wasvery easy to read, extremely informative, and overall, just made very goodsense. It's a great basic, "bottom-line" outline of the types ofthings a woman (from pre-pregnancy through post-delivery) needs to eat, andwhy eating these things is important.Knowing the "why" part wasof great help to me.

Despite feeling like I was well versed onnutritional needs before picking up this book, I most certainly learnedquite a bit.I feel like it will become a very useful reference guide forme through my pregnancy and beyond. From the pre-pregancy standpoint, Ihave already begun to lose some weight and feel much more energetic. Hopefully this is a change for life!

My one criticism of this book isthat the author seems to downplay the importance of taking a prenatalvitamin. To some extent that concerns me only because I wonder if I'mtruly getting all of the minerals and vitamins necessary for a healthypregnancy in my normal diet, regardless of how hard I try. Therefore, Istrongly suggest, as did the author, that any woman reading this book useit in conjuction with advice from her own doctor. ... Product Description
There is no time in your child’s life that nutrition is going to be as important as it is right now, when it hasn’t even drawn its first breath. Proper nutrition and good health are a vital part of having a healthy pregnancy, preventing many major birth defects and decreasing your chance of delivering a premature or low birth weight baby. Since your baby is obviously incapable of eating by itself at this point in time they are going to get all of the nutrients they need to grow and develop properly from the foods that you eat. That means that you have to make sure that you’re eating enough for both of you-and not just in mean calories either! For the next nine months the nutrients that you take in are going to have to sustain both your health and that of your fetus, so it’s essential that you make sure you’re getting enough of the necessary vitamins and minerals for both of you. This book is among the first books to be written with the expertise of a medical expert and from the viewpoint of the average, everyday, ordinary, "going to be the one actually getting up in the middle of the night to change the baby's diaper while the obstetrician sleeps peacefully mom". It's the book on pregnancy nutrition you'll actually understand, explained in stages to make it easy for you to give your baby the best chance at being born healthy and happy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
The book took a while to get to me...over 3 weeks but it came in good condition. Not too shabby for a used book at a great price...Would order from this seller again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast Shipping......Used Book
This arrived really fast but I paid for a new book and was sent a used book with highlights and underlining throughout the book. Good thing it was cheap.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I bought this book with my first baby and it's been helpful even to my second. The part about the recipes I really liked is that there is room for modification. The plain quick cake recipe can easily be turned into a whole wheat raisin cake, or a carrot cake even. The recipes are easy, the nutritional info is easy to understand.By far this is the best book I've come across for new moms that don't know what to cook.I haven't made one thing from this book that's been a dud.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful!
I bought this book before I gave birth to my daughter last October. I read it while I was on maternity leave, and immediately had doubts about the content. There are pages and pages of sample menus, which are basically the same meals and snacks repeated over and over in different order, and they're not that imaginative at that! There is nothing in this book that any woman does'nt already know about moderation and eating healthily. It's an account of one woman's opinions on her experience of losing weight after giving birth, give this one a miss!

3-0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd gotten the updated version
As much as I wanted to like this diet, it just did not work for me.She recommended eating 2400 calories for my body type/weight and I knew that would never help me lose weight. The biggest thing this book helped with was knowing that it's really important for me to make the most of every calorie while breastfeeding, for my OWN health.Diet info is changing constantly, and I felt like Behan recommended way too many starches and way too little protein, especially for a mom who's getting back into strength training.I don't know what her 2007 version of this book suggests, but I'm sure it's more updated in this regard.I've read over and over on the internet that a breastfeeding mother should eat at least 1800 calories, so I've been sticking with around 1800-1950 using some of Behan's suggestions (and also using Bob Green's Best Life Diet), and have immediately seen weight loss and have no problems with milk supply. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Quick and to the point
Another great resource from Glade B. Curtis. The same information in the [book:Your Baby's First Year: Week By Week (Your Pregnancy Series), Second Edition|865664] but in a fabulous compact version. I did feel that the authors lean toward formula feeding over breastfeeding in the subtleties that they expressed, but the information for either beginning feeding of an infant is there. I enjoy the resources provided in the books from the Your Pregnancy series and I highly recommend them.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money
This book was very poorly written. First clue, its called Your Pregnancy but it is about after your baby was born-that makes no sense! Because it is a quick guide the author takes the liberty of writing full paragraphs in bulleted form. The sentences are incomplete and sometimes do not make sense. It is super repetative and yet not very helpful.I had to stop reading it after 10 pages because the editing was so horrible.Save your money and just read up in What to Expect: The First Year.MUCH better value for money spent.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and Expensive
While the book provided some good information, I was expecting more judging by the title. (I was also surprised at how small the book was given its cost.) Bottom line? There is much more specific and far more up-to-date information available for free on the internet. A quick search under "diabetes mellitus and pregnancy" will provide a wealth of it, including specific (and current) rates of birth defects at what blood sugar levels and which tests should be conducted during which trimester.

I think the problem may be that it's trying to do too much. The introduction states that the book is designed to "present to the clinician a complete package of protocols."Given some of the very basic information, I hope there are no clinicians who don't know some of this stuff.

The first chapter discusses the fact that it's a good idea to talk to women before conception about the importance of good blood sugar control (does anyone not know that?) and lists the doctors one should see and some of the tests that should be conducted. It basicaly suggests a thorough exam for all the diabetic trouble spots--eyes, kidneys, A1c levels, thyroid, etc. All good sense. However, the second chapter is on contraception, which seems unecessary and out of place.Worse, the first chapter boldly states that if the woman has "clinically proven" cardiac disease, she should not only be counseled against pregnancy, but "should be asked to consider permanent sterilization"(!). No discussion about risk factors or degrees of severity--just any cardiac disease equals sterilization. If the book is only geared toward "clinicians," perhaps that's acceptable. But a discussion of birth control, and a list of what kinds of insulin exist and their duration seems geared toward the completely uninitiated. I found it shocking.

A large problem I had was with the graph of birth defect rates, something I was very, very concerned with. It doesn't seem to be labeled accurately. It says it measures number of spontaneous abortions, major malformations and no major malformations in conjunction with HA1c levels in the first trimester. However, above the HA1c levels it says "Mean + SD (standard deviation)." You can't tell what the SD refers to, and it reports some pretty high numbers. I contacted the ADA (publisher) about this since it suggests that an A1c between 7.7 and 9.3 has fewer incidents of major malformation than an A1c below 7.7. The person I corresponded with was very nice, and told me a few times they would get back to me. They finally said I should check with my doctor if I'm pregnant, which did NOT answer the question. I checked the source material listed at the end of the chapter--this graph is based on information from "reference 13," which was an article published in 1979. I found much more current info on my own with a simple internet check.

There was information about the fact that insulin requirements will increase as the pregnancy progresses, but my doctor has a chart that shows you the typical increases. Further, the book Pumping Insulin has a good chapter on pregnancy and what to expect in dosage increases, diet breakdowns and blood sugar goals pre- and post-meal.

Much of the rest of the book seems like common sense, things you could find in almost any book on pregnancy or in some other book designed for the lay person written from the diabetic's point of view rather than the clinician's.

Overall, I wish someone had steered me toward better information. Given the title, I was expecting it to be sort of a "one-stop shop" where I could get all the factual information I would need. Perhaps I expected too much.

5-0 out of 5 stars What you REALLY need to know
This is a book for diabetic women planning or in pregnancy. It is very detailed and some of the language may be difficult for the lay person. However it goes into great detail about diabetes managment and reducing the risks of complications in the pregnancy. You will learn more here than in any doctor's office. If you are not medically inclined, get the book, read it then ask your doctor or nurse to explain questions that the book evokes about your situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Doctors and Nurses!
I am a pregnant diabetic woman with no medical training, and I highly recommend this book to others like me who want some good information on pregnancy and diabetes. It is appropriate for type I, type II, and gestational diabetes.

It has great facts such as a graph of 1st trimester HbA1c's vs. number of congenital malformations and a table with each congenital malformation and the associated factor of increased risk. Those two things right there were worth the price of the book for me.It also serves as a guide for your entire pregnancy from pre-conception through breastfeeding. It explains the tests that should be performed throughout your pregnancy, how your diabetes should be treated during labor and delivery, and how your baby should be treated after he/she is born.

There were a few small downsides to this book.I did not understand about 5% of it, although I was almost always able to get the gist of it.Another 5% was just more information than I needed or wanted. Also, it sometimes gave perfect-world recommendations that didn't seem practical given the real-world limitations of time, money, and the fact that pregnant diabetic women are humans, not machines!

If you want an informational book on pregnancy and diabetes and you aren't scared off by medical terminology, this is the one to get. ... Read more
