Proper Nutrition During Pregnancy

There is no time in your child’s life that nutrition is going to be as important as it is right now, when it hasn’t even drawn its first breath. Proper nutrition and good health are a vital part of having a healthy pregnancy, preventing many major birth defects and decreasing your chance of delivering a premature or low birth weight baby.

Since your baby is obviously incapable of eating by itself at this point in time they are going to get all of the nutrients they need to grow and develop properly from the foods that you eat. That means that you have to make sure that you’re eating enough for both of you-and not just in mean calories either! For the next nine months the nutrients that you take in are going to have to sustain both your health and that of your fetus, so its essential that you make sure you’re getting enough of the necessary vitamins and minerals for both of you.

Your Prenatal Vitamins Aren’t Enough!

Many women read the section above and think, ‘I’m taking my prenatal vitamins like my physician told me, and I’m trying to eat healthy. Do I still have to worry about my nutrition? The answer to that is ABSOLUTELY. Prenatal vitamins help, but there is no substitute for proper nutrition during the gestation period. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t take prenatal vitamins. They will go a long way toward helping to compensate for the necessary nutrients that are all but impossible to get through your food in a day. (For example, it is a rare woman that doesn’t need a boost to her iron supply during the gestation period, whether she’s nutrition conscious or not.)

There is a reason that prenatal vitamins are called nutritional supplements, however. On their own they’re not sufficient to ensure that your baby grows and develops properly. That’s why it’s vital that you understand what you need to do during your pregnancy to keep both you and baby healthy.

I’ll teach you how to:

1) Break down what you eat in a day.

There are many diets that are “guaranteed” to help you have a healthy pregnancy, but unless you’re willing to spend the next nine months eating the same things over and over (and over and over and over and…) you’re probably not going to stick to them for very long. That’s okay! I’ll teach you how to identify the nutrients you need and keep your own tally going, allowing you to eat the foods that you want while at the same time doing what’s best for your baby.

2) Distinguish between Trimesters

Just as your child is going to have different nutritional needs when it was born, so too are its needs going to vary throughout its prenatal development. I’ll take youthrough the minute changes you can make to your diet each trimester that will make a major impact on your baby’s development.

Here is what you will learn inside this guide....
• The various stages of fetal development
• How nutrition affects how your baby grows
• The role that nutrition plays in determining whether or not your child has a birth defect
• How to have a healthy baby without giving up your favorite foods
• What to do when you can't follow a regular pregnancy “diet”
• How to l ... Read more

Product Description
This book deals with nutrition during pregnancy and the effects of nutrient deficiencies on both the mother and fetus from a metabolic and clinical perspective. The author focuses on the idea that maternal undernutrition before and during the course of gestation can cause fetal growth retardation and other abnormalities. The book includes information on body composition, metabolic fuels, amino acids, vitamins and minerals, and normal maternal-fetal exchange and fetal growth. Coverage also includes maternal and fetal effects of nutrient deficiencies, with careful attention devoted to protein-energy malnutrition and specific deficiencies. The latter part of the book is more clinically oriented, covering the nutrition care of the normal gravida and of special cases, such as the underweight mother, the teen-age mother, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, women with special diets, and total parenteral nutrition. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars options
Eating healthy doesn't mean you have to cut out dairy meat or eggs but if YOU choose this for yourself then by all means do so. What i do have issue with is these parents who give no alternative to their children. The parents of these children got the option to choose how they eat. Why don't their children get the same choice. Whats right for you may not be right for your children. Having said so i also think more parents should cut out the junk food and make their children eat more fruits and veggies. All i care about is the healthy children who get to choice of if they eat a hamburger or a veggie burger.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT book should never have gone out of print
this is a great book that never should have gone out of print.
I would have given it 5 stars but shipping always takes a long time

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for basic nutrition info.
I thought this book is very informative in many ways and covers basic nutrition principles that many people have little or no knowledge of. I am working toward a degree in nutrition and feel this book is a very valuable source in my growing collection of books. As for the reveiwer who thinks vegan children do not grow healthy and strong he/she must have been doing something terribly wrong because I have not personally known a single vegan child who is small or sickly including my own. My children are vegan, have strong immune systems (not vaccinated either) and rarely ever get sick. My children are naturally slim and healthy but are not small for their ages and our family pediatrician comments on my children as being among the healthiest in his practice. I think a properly balanced vegan diet can benefit all persons from birth.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, but some parts are a little out of date
Vegan parents-to-be will be inspired and reassured by Dr. Klapers compelling, well-documented arguments in support of veganism during pregnancy, lactation, and childhood. For me, the most valuable part of thebook was the extensive collection of parents' stories and photographs ofhealthy, happy children. Dr. Klaper provides not only helpful food guides(to replace the omnivorous "4 Food Groups") but also details foodsources of nutrients which may be of greater concern to vegans (protein, iron, calcium, B12). I would have liked to see a discussion of how to copewith "morning" sickness (for me it lasted all day) and finickytoddlers. Why do books for omnivores say "don't worry if all you eatis soda crackers for the first trimester" or "don't worry if yourtoddler eats nothing but Cheerios for a week" but books for vegansmake it seem like we must always eat a widely varied, perfectly balanceddiet? Because this is an older book, some of the advice (e.g.breastfeeding, use of juices, introduction of solids) does not reflectcurrent knowledge. This book is still definitely worth having on hand, butI would suggest supplementing it with the more recent _Becoming_Vegetarian_by Vesanto Melina et al. Thanks to Dr. Klaper's encouragement, I resistedpressure to feed my baby meat. He is now a tall, intelligent, healthy, sturdy, lively, loveable two-year-old, and vegan!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great nutritional mom info; Outdated, incomplete child info.
This book came very highly recommended so I had great expectations. Unfortunately, it fell a little short.

First, what is good about it... The sections on nutrition for pregnant or nursing mothers are excellent. Itgoes into great detail regarding nutritional requirements and dispels somemyths that conventional thinking has generated. (i.e. dairy products helpprevent osteoporosis, meat is the best protein source, etc.) It alsoprovides detailed recommendations which I find tremendouslyhelpful.

Unfortunately, when it comes to recommendations for nursinginfants, the information is VERY outdated. For example, it recommends thatnursing mothers switch sides "every 5 minutes" to avoid soreness.Anyone who has nursed knows that the "latching on" phase is themost uncomfortable so this would actually make soreness worse. Further, itis very unhealthy for the infant to switch that soon since the hindmilk(milk produced after 10 minutes)provides the greatest sustenance. It alsorecommends using a pin to enlarge the hole in bottle nipples to increaseflow. (bad idea)

The recommendations for introducing first foods are nobetter. The book (pg 44 & 48) recommends introducing fruit juices at2-3 months beginning with melon juice. Doctors, midwives, nutritionists andrecent literature concur that that is too young to introduce juice. Further, melon juices are more likely to cause allergies then, say, applejuice.

Finally, the book intersperses pictures of 'healthy' veganchildren as role models for the reader.Over 6 pages of photos andbiographies are dedicated to River Phoenix and family, since they arevegan, "take no medications, have never been hospitalized and have notneeded a physician's services."Oops. Another role model discussedand pictured is Ocean Robbins. (Do all old vegans name their kids afterbodies of water?) Although Ocean is the son of John Robbins (whose book Iwould give 5 stars), his face looks gaunt and unhealthy and his eyes lookcloudy and tired.

Last points: Another notable omission is how childrencan deal with peer pressure. While the book is not a psychology book, itshould go beyond 'bake vegan cake' for your child's birthday party toaddress this important issue. The best thing about this book is the samplemenus.I like the way it breaks down the content by calories, protein, calcium, etc. It's nice to know where the vitamins, minerals and othernutrients are coming from in a vegan diet.

In short, this book is a goodsource for basic nutrition but a bad source for usable vegan child-raisingtechniques... ... Read more

Product Description
This book, covering the 39th Nestle Nutrition Workshop, is based on a presentation forum by international experts in placental function and fetal nutrition. The availability of new imaging and research techniques now permits broader studies in human pregnancy and basic research, better illustrating the association between clinical pathology and placental dysfunction and fetal malnutrition. The five sessions of the conference include a mixture of basic and clinical research topics; and follow the progress made in understanding placental transport and metabolism and its impact on human pregnancy. The illuminating presentations captured in this text offer a far more precise description of normal fetal growth and metabolism, along with the possibility of exploring how specific maternal diseases affect fetal and placental nutrition. Suggestions for potential therapeutic application to human pregnancies are discussed with sensitivity and insight. ... Read more
