Reproductive biologist David Bainbridge fills them in with Making Babies, a witty and intriguing look at an experience so essential that we all go through it at least once. It would be all too easy for the author to get caught up in the intricacies of hormones and anatomy that have evolved from our egg-laying ancestors, but he softens the details with insights and examples from throughout the animal kingdom. Expectant parents might not like being compared to red deer at first, but most will warm to their shared experience. A new way to look at pregnancy
Most pregnancy books follow a certain theme, but this book takes a different point of view.There's a scientific approach as opposed to how the mother is feeling and what warm fuzzies are going on.I like to think of this as the pregnancy book for men.It talks from a strictly scientific and medical approach.It's incredibly interesting and easy to understand.The author does a great job of making the book feel more personal while giving so many medical scenarios.

This book is an alternative to all of the other pregnancy books.Incredibly informative and easy to read.

It's all in the approach...
I was excited when I found "Making Babies: The Science of Pregnancy" and started to read it right away. It read like a biology textbook, which I expected, but I still felt like it was missing something. There was a definite absence of feeling, of understanding. Everything, from sex to conception to birth and beyond, are described in a cold, businesslike manner. Never mind that this is the biggest life-altering (and body-altering) event known to humankind. A good writer can provide facts and statistics and historical context without sounding like they're sharing observations about a new, confusing species. Then I looked at the author's name, and saw that the author was a man. Maybe that was it? Not sure, as most of the pregnancy books I've read have been authored by women. There are far better books that explain the whys and hows of pregnancy. Unless you were a biology major in college, skip this one.

Understanding Pregnancy
I loved this book. It is not a guide about pregnancy in the "What to expect..." kind of way. It is instead a very detailed, fascinating narrative about the current state of knowledge on conception, fetal development and birth. This book satisfied my curiosity on the complex process that is procreation. I particularly liked the ease with which the narration flows. The language is simple and mostly non-technical, but it is also not "dumbed down", which is brilliant on the part of the author. As a scientist myself, I was delighted with the list of peer-reviewed journal references provided at the end. I will definitely consider gifting this book to all of my pregnant friends, although I would highly recommend it to non-pregnant ones as well.

Way Cool
This is awesome any mother father or pregnant person should see this if they want to learn more about the growth of babies in the womb. There are lots of pictures, and complex information in this book.

A detailed, scientific look
This book's subtitle "The Science of Making Babies" is completely accurate.The author delves into more evolutionary biology than I want or need to know, but it all makes for fascinating, if somewhat slow and clinical, reading.There are a few pictures, but they generally do not add to the ooh and ahh factor of the miracle of pregnancy.For that, I'd recommend "A Child Is Born" by Lennart Nilsson. ... Works both ways
This is the first book that I read on NFP and it served to be the most informative and useful.Before reading the book I had only heard of the famous rhythm method.This book opened a door to many different signs that a women can use to tell when she is fertile.I have used these signs (along with prayer) to GET pregnant (so I don't understand the other reveiwer).

I would happily recommend this book to anyone wanting to conceive as well as those that want a safe way to prevent conception.

From Someone practicing NFP
I have been using NFP for a year now and am always looking for information to make me more educated on the subject.I sought this book to round out my education.For my purposes, it does serve me but this is not a book to be used for beginners, wanting to learn how to do Natural Family Planning/Natural Birth Control.This book is definitely towards birth control--as the title states--so I would not recommend it for those trying to learn how to achieve pregancy necessarily.I also would not recommend this book for those going off of the pill--it gives only a paragraph of information about that.This book is very good at giving biology and can be helpful in giving slightly different wording for helping someone to learn the signs of fertility.The author basically uses the Thermal Method of NFP and uses the other portions of NFP--cervix, mucus-- as secondary signs.If for some reason you can't do your temperature or want to use the sympto method, this is not the book for you.
