4-0 out of 5 stars Good for Kids
It's really a great book for kids that are interested in Dinosaurs. But i wish it indicated if they were meat eating or plant eating. It also could have drawings of all dinosaurs rather than leaving some out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dinosaur Fact Finder
This book covers a very good selection of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. They have very good pictures and interesting facts. I especially like the graphic that shows the size compared to the size of man. I found this book to be very accurate and for the most part up to date. I would recommend it for children with an advanced interest in dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals.CSE ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting reading
Tracing the history of vertebrates, this interesting book provides good information about animals and how they evolved. The illustrations are also very good and interesting.I've read parts of this book to my little daughter and she loves looking at the pictures and imagining living back in time when these animals roamed the earth.

Young earth creationists might want to avoid this book like the plague. The timelines are very heretical and all those intermediate species show a solid pattern of evolution of life on this planet.

I welcome feedback on this and all reviews at wstrnlibwarrior@yahoo.com

4-0 out of 5 stars informative; makes an interesting coffee table book too :-)

This informative and well-illustrated book would be a useful adition to any nature- or science-lover's personal library, or an interesting coffee table book

I've only seen and read the 1988 edition so I don't know how many changes have been made in the new edition, but I assume the format's still the same.Basically this is a very good non-technical introduction to prehistoric vertebrates (animals with backbones - fish, amphbians, reptiles, birds & mammals). Although there are some pages that provide the basic background - how fossils form, continental drift, etc - by the far the most interesting, and indeed the bulk, of the book is the coverage it gives to a large number of individual genera, each of which is illustrated by a color painting. It is the sheer number and diversity of creatures covered here, rather than simply a few dozen types of dinosaurs, that makes this book so interesting. I find the realism of the art work tends to vary - some drawings seem more realistic than others, but I suppose that's just personal taste. The art work is still of good quality thoughout though. The accompanying text is brief but clear and informative, and gives a basic introduction to that type of animal. The best thing about this book is that it's not just about dinosaurs (although these are covered in detail) but also deals with many other types of vertebrate creatures as well.My only real criticism is that despite the title - "animals" - no invertebrate animals were included, no trilobites, eurypterids, nautiloids etc.Still, you can only cover so much in the space available, and this book does a pretty good job. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cool Dinosaur Reference Book
I still remember when I first saw this book. One of my school class mates had it, and I instantly thought it was great and wanted my copy! This was back in the mid-nineties when I was in Junior High School. Finding a copy turned out to be much harder than it thought it would be for some reason. When I saw that amazon.com had it listed, I had to write a review!

Apparently the first edition came out in 1989 published by Dr. Michael Benton originally written in English. In the first pages the book goes into different sections: "El Descubrimiento De Los Gigantes Del Pasado" that talks about the first fossils discovered, "La Edad De La Tierra" focuses on Earth's age and it's history, then there's the detailed description on how fossils form and the different classes of them.
Next come a section that explains the different classes of prehistoric animals and finally on page twenty eight the first A creature, the dinosaur "Abelisaurus", appears and so it continues all the way to Z. In between there's such popular creatures like the Diplodocus, Spinosaurus, Brachiosaurus, and the mandatory Tyrannosaurus Rex of course. You can't write a book about dinosurs and leave out the T. Rex, easily the most popular dinosaur ever!!

You may skip this paragraph but I would like to share a short story. It all happened back when I was in Junior High School in Argentina. It was around April of 1997 when I was in seventh grade that my natural science teacher assigned the class to do a presentation on dinosaurs. I was delighted! So she divided us in groups and gave us like two weeks to work on it giving us the actual class time and we could work after school too. That's when one of my classmates showed up one day with this book!!
So we used it as reference and it was very helpful indeed! That's why I liked it so much!
So then we prepared a couple of cool posters featuring a collage of dinosaur drawings taken from different books including this one of course!
I couldn't wait for our scheduled presentation date to arrive! Finally it came and my group did great. All members received a score of ten which in my country is the equivalent to 100 in the US. I recall using a radio antenna durning the presentation as a pointer which everyone thought was so cool! Also I brought pictures taken during a trip me and my family made a couple of years earlier to Chubut, one of the provinces of Argentina. In the city of Trelew, we visited the local natural science museum. In one of the exhibitions they had a dinosaur egg!!! So I posed for a picture which later I brought to school and passed it around to my classmates while we were doing the presentation!! The name of the museum is Florentino Ameghino.
Sorry for this extremely self-indulgent paragraph but I had to tell this story here!

Last but not least, in the last pages of the book, you get a World Museum Directory that lists all the places where you can find dinosaur exhibitions! (The Florentino Ameghino museum is not listed though!!) Also I was surprised at the age range given above for the book. Only up to eight years? If you ask me this book has no age limit really. To me, it doesn't really look like a children-only book.
Very cool book indeed!!
Thanks for taking the time to read!
Later... ... Read more

I work with a low functioning student. He loves dinosaurs, and has talent for drawing. He saw this book in the library, and could not put it down.I purchased a copy for him, and he is so happy.I think any child interested in drawing these animals will simply love this drawing book, there is no reason at all not to purchase it.

Why were the dinosaurs "built" the way they were? How did this determine their lifestyles? This book answers these and other questions in a close-up look at the skeletons of 18 dinosaurs and other popular prehistoric animals. The reader should be able to understand the structures of these enormous creatures from the study of their bones, just as scientists have done. Each skeleton is presented dramatically on a black background, accompanied by a complete, "clothed" illustration and a to-scale human silhouette. Product Description
Giant cave bears were creatures to be feared–and revered. Thousands of years ago, early humans painted images of them on cave walls. By the end of the ice age, the last of the cave bears had died out. The only things left were their bones–hundreds of thousands of bones–and eerie paintings in the caves they once inhabited.

Ice Age Cave Bear tells the story of these massive creatures in fascinating detail–what they looked like, where and how they lived, and what may have caused their extinction. Author Barbara Hehner takes us back to a time when the enormous bears lived alongside such ice age giants as mammoths, woolly rhinos, and cave lions–as well as Neanderthals and other early human beings. And she examines the question of whether or not ancient peoples actually worshipped the cave bear. ... Read more
