Product Description
This book challenges traditional perceptions of Australian Aboriginal prehistory: that environment is the major determinant of hunter-gatherers; that Aborigines were egalitarian and culturally homogeneous; that they experienced few economic and demographic changes. Lourandos argues that their social and economic processes were complex and that the prehistory period was dynamic. Lourandos considers colonization, Tasmanian Aborigines, the role of fire, the intensification debate, plant exploitation and other prehistoric hunter-gatherer societies. ... Read more

Product Description
Encompassing the entire history of humankind, beginning with our earliest ancestors and highlighting significant advances throughout time, this new revised edition is divided into six major thematic sections and contains a new epilogue and new maps.Amazon.com Review
Writing a one-volume history of the world is a project fraughtwith peril: in such a book, surely something important will be leftout, glossed over, missed. Hugh Thomas does a better job than most, especially in his attention to the material basis for humansociety--the farming, mining, stockraising, and industry that keep usfed and clothed. He has a sweeping view of historical trends, such asthe worldwide emergence of kingship and the inevitable collapse ofempires. Thomas's view is resolutely Eurocentric, and he passes byAsian history with a swift glance. With that fault in mind, however, the reader will find in Thomas's pages a handy and very well-writtenwork of historical reference. ... Read more

Product Description
The "land in between" is the upper Saint John Valley, a region straddling the Maine-New Brunswick border. A zone of contacts between different Native American cultures until the arrival of the Europeans, it was disputed by the British and the French in the colonial period and settled by Acadians and French Canadians in the eighteenth century. To this day, it has remained the site of a distinct French-American culture, and its residents have striven to preserve their specificity and unity despite the international boundary. The Land in Between is a narrative survey history of this fascinating and unique region and is also designed to serve as a reference for teachers, librarians, archivists, and historians. It includes documents (many translated from the original), maps, and an extensive bibliography. ... Read more
