Product Description
Based on the key Montessori principle that children learn best through active experience, Teach Me to Do It Myself presents simple activities through which children explore and develop their skills. These skill areas include sensory perceptions, body coordination, language, understanding of numbers, and movement. This practical, color-illustrated parenting book is filled with activities and instructions for overseeing children as they carry out a variety of learning activities. Most activities will seem simple to parents, because once mastered, adults perform them automatically. However, toddlers experience a sense of accomplishment and self-worth when they learn to perform them independently. The many activities start with dressing and personal hygiene, then go on to include . . .

  • Pouring activities
  • Threading and sewing activities
  • Peg activities
  • Cutting with scissors
  • Sorting activities by touch
  • A color matching game
  • Making musical scales with bottles and water
  • Using alphabet tiles to make words
  • Growing things in a window box
  • Making finger puppetsActivities are described in detail and include checklists of needed items, as well as variations and related activities for children to try. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Love the Pictures
I found this to be a very enjoyable and helpful book to read as I tried to think about what to do with my 2-year-old.We're not into teaching "academics" at an early age, but rather prefer to teach life skills and help develop confidence. The book helped me hone my philosophy and think about how to carry it out.
I took away one star only because it is hard to find enough activities to do with a 2-year-old -- most are designed for the older child.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Parents
As a retired Montessori teacher, I was looking for a book that would be a good resource for my grandchild who is not attending a Montessori school. I was making Montessori works for him to do, but due to distance, I looked for a book that was easy to comprehend without Montessori training. This manual has things his parents could find at home to mirror the Montessori experience. This is the book I recommend for anyone looking to add the Montessori experience to their life and enrich their child's learning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes Nana time even more special!
I borrowed this book at the library and am now ordering it here to have my own copy on hand.I spend a lot of time with my two-year old granddaughter and find that she responds really well to the activities described in this book.I love the Montessori philosophy and methods, and the author presents some of the latter in a very engaging way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well organized, a wealth of information!
The Introduction includes: a Preface; "Who was Montessori"; "How to use this book"; and "Frequently asked questions" (seven in all).

There are five chapters with activities you can do at home or in a classroom setting: "Life skills, Developing the senses, Language development, Numeracy skills," and "Science skills."

Each activity has a picture, a numbered list of directions, a list of "You will need," and "Other activities to try." Most activities include a "Tip box," a "Word activity" (language), and a "Safety Point."

In the back of the book are worksheets to use (copy) for making several of the activities shown in the book.

The "Life skills" chapter includes: activities for personal hygiene, dressing, polishing, pouring, spooning, tonging, open close, threading, weaving, sewing cards, and cutting.

The "Developing the senses" chapter includes: activities for exploring textures and objects and learning about shape, size, height, length, color, sound, smell, and taste.

The "Language development" chapter includes: guidelines to help you select books for your child and guidelines for reading to your child; activities for word play, phonics and learning the letters of the alphabet, word building (Moveable Alphabet), and picture cards (Reading Tablets); making phrases, sentences, a diary, a book, a family tree, and a picture poem.

The "Numeracy skills" chapter includes: sorting, counting and learning numbers one to ten, number sequencing, simple addition and subtraction, introducing money, and number songs.

The "Science skills" chapter includes: leaf collecting, flower puzzle, planting, understanding volume, float and sink, the weather, geography including globe and map and land forms, mixing colors, and baking.

Worksheets (in the back of the book) for several of the activities shown in the book:

*Learning height and length (similar to the Number Rods). Make color copies, enlarge them, cut them out.

*Two-dimensional shapes: geometric shapes, in black outline, of circles, squares, and triangles from largest to smallest. Make a copy and cut out shapes or make two copies for matching shapes.

*Identifying letters: alphabet letters in black and white lower case shown on the line. Make copies and cut out. You can also color them in using red and blue markers or colored pencils for the Moveable Alphabet. You can also enlarge them when you make a copy for making the Sandpaper Letters.

*Word building: black and white cards with pictures and three-letter short vowel phonetic words (six cards for each vowel for a total of 30 cards). Copy and cut them out for a Reading Tablets activity, or your own language creation. You can also color the pictures in (recommended).

*Constructing phrases: a list of articles, adjectives, verbs, and prepositions.

*Make a flower puzzle: black and white drawing of a flower, and its parts in labels.

I give this book five stars out of five. It is well organized, full of information, and easy to understand with nice photos and drawings. The activities are those found in Montessori classrooms and can be duplicated at home. I think it is ideal for ages 2 1/2 to 5.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good ideas
Just a note, the author makes sure to point out that she is more capturing the "spirit" of Montessori, rather than following the letter of Montessori. So, you might want to consider that before purchasing this book.

However, I really like the lay out of this book. The sections are divided nicely and each one has a lot of different activity ideas to do at home with your child. On each page, she also gives you more variations of the same activity to adjust as your child's abilities increase. This is very useful. She also gives a detailed list of things you need for each activity.

I have a two year old son, and I am looking forward to implementing some new activities in to our daily routine. I was a preschool teacher before having my son, and I know from the children that I taught there, and my experience as a mother, children learn best by doing, and get excited about learning useful things. I love Montessori's philosophy on teaching children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great learning tool for toddlers
I found this book (and other Joy Berry Classic books) to be an excellent resource to teach my 2 year old important social skills. The words are simple and are able to keep a toddler's attention, which isn't easy to do. The pictures are nice and interesting. My daughter likes to read about the boy at the table with his doggy. She turns the pages herself and talks about what is happening. I highly recommend this series of books as a wonderful and fun learning tool.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pretty lame book
Someone gave me this book and another from the series (Bathtime). While I applaud the concept of books that teach children about appropriate behavior, I have a very low opinion of these books and can not recommend them.
The writing is very uninspiring."I like myself.I do not want to get sick.I eat healthy food.Healthy food helps me to stay well."Maybe this type of language could be good for early readers but the version I have is a board book (for babies!) and I choose not to talk to my baby like she's an idiot with a rudimentary IQ.
The illustrations are also uninspired. They are neither colorful, nor interesting, nor beautiful. They look like a terrible textbook from the 80s.
Overall, these books are so boring that I have no interest in reading them. My daughter (now 1 yr old) is clearly unimpressed. She never selects them for me to read to her (as she does with other books) and she never sits and turns through the pages.
There must be other books out there that teach meaningful life lessons but come packaged in an artistic and clever book.
Sorry to be so negative but in my opinion, these books are boring and lame.

4-0 out of 5 stars useful tool for teaching table manners
This book was recommended to me by an occupational therapist in response to my 4 year old son's messy eating habits.I found it was helpful to read it to him and then use some of concepts from the book during mealtime to redirect his behavior. The text is simple and direct.I think it might be better for a younger child as it is a board book and very easy to follow.Myson's OT recommended Berry's like of special times book, but this particular one was relevant for my situation. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Kids like it
This book may start out a bit simple, but I think as we work through it over the summer, it will be perfect. The kids like the colorful pages.

2-0 out of 5 stars not enough variety (P-K version)... ones for older kids are good though
My daughter (5 1/2) typically loves workbooks. But, this one (P-K edition) was too much of the same thing over and over. There is definitely not enough variety. The counting pages were not at all interesting or challenging for her.I have found other workbooks for this age group hold her attention without issue. This one does not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great workbook!
This is a wonderful summer workbook to continue summer learning before my daughter starts kindergarten in the fall.

These Joyberry books are wonderful educational tools for toddlers. The books have large print, basic language, and nice intriguing pictures. My 2 year old often picks these books over the many other books that she has. She loves to turn the pages herself and talk about what is happening on each page. The best part is, she is learning about really important social and environmental skills while having fun doing it. All of sudden, she is talking to me about taking medicine, and learning to express being sick. The CD's are great for the car too. She asks to listen to them all the time. 4-0 out of 5 stars Incredible!!
This book worked very well for my daughter. She had been learning phonics at school and just wasn't getting it. I found the book by chance (it is very hard to get ahold of)and figured I'd give it a shot. When my daughter (within weeks) began forming her own sentences, I was extremely satisfied. The book begins with simple instructions and explains to a parent or teacher the easy method within. The original stories were a delight, as well as the full page illustrations, drawn by the author herself. I recommend this book to anyone that wants their child to read quickly and well. As every parent knows, the gift of reading is one of the most important gifts a parent can give. Hurry up and give!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 101 Rhythm Instruments for Young Children
I love this book - it iseasy to reference with activities to bring musical instruments easily inot hte preschool classroom. This will be a grab and go for lesson plans!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource for Non-Music Specialist
As the owner of a prechool music program I am always looking for new ideas to incorporate into my curriculum. This book gave me a jumping off place for several new ideas. However, I think the greatest beneficiaries of this book will be the non-music specialist preschool teacher andparents of preschoolers. As is common with many preschool curriculums, this book relies heavily upon familiar song tunes, which makes learning the music for each ativity very quick and easy. Each activity is succinctly described in easy to understand language and, with only one or two exceptions, limits materials needed to the instruments and occassionaly a CD player. If you want activites that teach fundamental music skills, this book does that in limited fashion (fast/slow, piano/forte, stady beat), but only experientially;Children are not introduced to any musical terminology and teachers are not cautioned that children often have a difficult time keeping a steady beat, thus some frustration may ensue with some of the rhythm stick activities. For a more complete review of this book, visit my website:[...]

You don't need to be a music teacher to use this book either.Just an involved parent with some patience for noise!Have fun!

It's very easy and simple for the kids to do and they absolutely love the songs. I even use some of the songs in my first grade lessons.I personally highly recommend this book and looking for more just like this!

4-0 out of 5 stars Some songs excellent
While I agree with one reviewer that some songs are boring, my 3rd grade students absolutely love some of the songs.Slinky Sevens, Calculate to Learn the Eights, and World's Hardest Multiplication Fact make this worth the money to buy. Those are the hardest facts to remember, and the songs make them fun.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Happy with Amazon Customer Service
I'm not happy with my product because I did not receive the audio cd that was to be with it.I've already sent an e-mail to Amazon and no one has responded.I'm not able to utilize the book without the audio cd.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought
the songs are not really a great format for memorizing facts (for my child). Instead of "2 x 2 is four!" the songs are products "2, 4, 6, 8" etc. Recalling them are more difficult once you get past counting by 5's. But, my daughter is listening for 15 minutes per day and is slowly picking them up.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Given the other review was so incredibly positive, I was excited to purchase this product. My kids got to the third song and asked me to turn it off because the music was "lame."I have to say, the songs are pretty hokey. Can't learn the songs without listening to the cd, so I will try to put it in the car and see if they warm up to it. . .

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and educational
My fourth-grade students like these songs so much that they're disappointed on days we don't have time to sing them. From rap to country and western, the music is varied, fun, and memorable. I've been using the cassette version for several years; I'm so glad there's a CD version now. This is one of the better "multiplication songs" resources--definitely worth the price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
Great ideas for learning centers and there are fantastic explanations of each, with materials included! This was an excellent resource!

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource for Younger Grades
This is really a wonderful book with excellent ideas to use in the classroom. However, it says it is appropriate for third grade use, but it really isn't. It is made more for younger children. I will be able to use some ideas, but I will have to recreate the activities to make them useful for my students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This book contains many great ideas.I teach kindergarten, so wasn't able to use as much as first through 3rd grade teachers could. However, I did get some good ideas that I use. Not a bad price, and the ideas are worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have!
I would highly recommend this book for anyone teaching primary grades, and integrating literacy centers in the classroom. It is perfect for managing reading groups, as well as a great time-management tool. Full of reproducibles, and helpful tips, it's one of the best teacher resources available.:)

1-0 out of 5 stars A Basic book for new teachers
This book may work if you are a new teacher with no resources and no ideas. If you are a veteran teacher, don't bother. The book is full of worksheets that you could quickly create and are probably already doing in your classroom.Don't waste your money. ... Read more

    Product Description
Parents, teachers, and, most of all, kids will benefit from this book, which combines creative activities with a comprehensive, up-to-date list of biographies written for children. The key to learning about famous people is active involvement, and this book provides over one hundred clever ways to interact with biographical literature. Some ways to have fun with heroes: Making Ken and Barbie dolls into real heroes like the Babes--Babe Ruth and Babe Didrikson Zaharias; reading about Harriet Tubman's courage and then designing a hero's button to wear; discovering Albert Einstein's genius and deciding what he might have carried in his fanny pack; visiting "Michelangelo's World," which kids will design after reading a biography of one of the world's greatest artists; or making stained glass windows honoring a living hero and humanitarian, Mother Theresa. The material is organized by age group; pre-school (ages 3-5), primary (ages 6-8), intermediate (9-11), and young people (12-14). The activities, written for children and adults to enjoy together, precede the age-appropriate book listings. In a lively, often humorous way, they encourage children to have fun with famous men and women. Book listings are arranged in a user-friendly format. Over one hundred award-winning titles have been reviewed, and many other high-quality books are annotated. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hooray for Dennis Deneberg!
To begin, an admission. I'm a fan of Dennis Deneberg: his teaching, his writing, his astonishing skills as a speaker. Heroes? Of course we all need them. Today's kids, too often, only know tabloid heroes. Dennis's books will broaden their horizons. They are meant for teachers, parents, and children to use as a foundation--for further reading, for discussions, for projects. I recommend them highly. Joy Hakim ... Read more
