5-0 out of 5 stars Get ready for kindergarten
We have just completed the first two weeks out of the 10-week program recommended in this book. Preparing for kindergarten seems to be going really easy with my 5 year old. He likes doing his "homework" out of this book and asks to do it every day without being reminded. So far so good! I plan on getting another copy of the book to get my second child ready for kindergarten next year. I would recommend this book to all parents of pre-K children. ... Read more

Product Description
Learn & Grow is a comprehensive collection designed to help you with your childs health and learning.

Why? This is the question we parents are always trying to answer.

It's good that children ask questions: that's the best way to learn.

All children have two wonderful resources for learning -- imagination and curiosity. As a parent, you can awaken your children to the joy of learning by encouraging their imagination and curiosity.

Learn And Grow is a collection of 5 books on different education and health topics intended to help you make the most of your child's natural curiosity and guide them towards a healthy lifestyle. Teaching and learning are not mysteries that can only happen in school. They also happen when parents and children do simple things together.

By doing things together, you will show that learning is fun and important. You will be encouraging your child to study, learn, and stay in school -- important goals for any child.

This collection is a way for you to help meet these goals. It will give you a short run-down on facts, but the biggest part of the book is made up of simple, fun activities for you and your child to do together. Your child may even beg you to do them.

It has been said:

"The first teachers are the parents, both by example and conversation. But don't think of it as teaching. Think of it as fun."

Included in this outstanding collection are the following titles:

HEALTHY CHILD HAPPY CHILD

Long-term good health is less an accident than the result of good habits and wise choices. To enjoy good health now and in the future, youngsters must learn how to eat, exercise, sleep, control stress, and be responsible for personal cleanliness and reducing the risk of disease. Your child's ability to learn and the chances for a longer and more productive life can be greatly improved by developing and following good health practices.

HELPING YOUR CHILD LEARN TO READ

When parents help their children learn to read, they help open the door to a new world. As a parent, you can begin an endless learning chain: You read to your children, they develop a love of stories and poems, they want to read on their own, they practice reading, and finally they read for their own information or pleasure. They become readers, and their world is forever expanded and enriched.

HELPING YOUR CHILD LEARN MATH

Most parents will agree that it is a wonderful experience to cuddle up with their child and a good book. Few people will say that about flash cards or pages of math problems. For that reason, we have prepared this book to offer some math activities that are meaningful as well as fun. These activities use materials that are easy to find. They have been planned so you and your child might see that math is not just work we do at school but, rather, a part of life.

HELPING YOUR CHILD LEARN HISTORY

Today educators are working to promote the study of history in the schools and at home. Knowledge of our history enables us to understand our nation's traditions, its conflicts, and its central ideas and values. Knowledge of world history enables us to understand other cultures. We hope to encourage children to love history and to enjoy learning about it. This book is a tool you can use to stimulate your children's active involvement in the history that surrounds them every day.

HELPING YOUR CHILD FOR COLLEGE

It's never too early to think about the benefits of a college education and about ways to put college within reach both academically and financially. Throughout their school years, students will make decisions that affect whether they will be eligible to enter college. You, working with others, can help your child make these decisions wisely. This book is designed to help you with that process. It will help you work with your child and with your child's teachers and guidance counselors, to ensure that he or she has the option of going to college.

Invest wisely in your childs future today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 101 Rhythm Instruments for Young Children
I love this book - it iseasy to reference with activities to bring musical instruments easily inot hte preschool classroom. This will be a grab and go for lesson plans!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource for Non-Music Specialist
As the owner of a prechool music program I am always looking for new ideas to incorporate into my curriculum. This book gave me a jumping off place for several new ideas. However, I think the greatest beneficiaries of this book will be the non-music specialist preschool teacher andparents of preschoolers. As is common with many preschool curriculums, this book relies heavily upon familiar song tunes, which makes learning the music for each ativity very quick and easy. Each activity is succinctly described in easy to understand language and, with only one or two exceptions, limits materials needed to the instruments and occassionaly a CD player. If you want activites that teach fundamental music skills, this book does that in limited fashion (fast/slow, piano/forte, stady beat), but only experientially;Children are not introduced to any musical terminology and teachers are not cautioned that children often have a difficult time keeping a steady beat, thus some frustration may ensue with some of the rhythm stick activities. For a more complete review of this book, visit my website:[...]

It's very easy and simple for the kids to do and they absolutely love the songs. I even use some of the songs in my first grade lessons.I personally highly recommend this book and looking for more just like this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Book worth the money!

4-0 out of 5 stars great craft book
I found myself having to unexpectably homeschool my kindergartener. This book has been great to come up with craft ideas to help feel like they are not missing out on school. It is categorized, but not necessarily grouped in ways I would think of, still helpful though.Items can easily be obtained from a store, or saved up as you use other household things, ie toilet paper rolls, egg carton.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot of ideas, good price
I bought this to get some ideas for doing crafts with my son at home. Got a lot of ideas in good price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for Kids
This product is fairly orgainzed and clear about the materials and step by step procedures for the activities. The only thing is that I wish there was more organization with the age groups in each cateogory. Besides that, it is a great purchase!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice resourse

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful teacher's resource!
Highly recommend!I teach preschool and this book has been great for our class. So many great ideas and games of how to introduce new words and incorporate sign into our daily activities. Many, many pages full of pictures of how to sign certain words! That being said, I do find that my background in ASL does help make it easier to understand these pictures.Someone who has never seen any ASL will be able to do every sign according to the pictures, but they may not be completely accurate in how they interpret the pictures of each sign.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for professionals in the field of speech and language therapy
As a public school speech pathologist, I found this resource to be very useful in helping young learners access the school curriculum in a fun and engaging way. Excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource!
This book is a must for any preschool teacher serious about incorporating ASL into classroom activities.Dennis and Azpiri write from their own experience of using ASL in the classroom, and, though neither is fluent in ASL, they share their detailed curriculum for using ASL in the classroom. Most impressive is their understanding that signs cannot be used in a vacuum, and that simply throwing signs into the classroom without an understanding of the rich and complex history of ASL would be irresponsible.Instead, they provide a context for using the language by giving a basic introduction for beginners, then providing a strong case for *why* the language should be used: to motitave and engage young learners, to match multiple learning styles, and to include children with various abilities, for a start. From the classroom teacher's point of view, the best part about this book are the copious lesson plans, on topics common to the early childhood classroom (weather, seasons, school, family, colors, community helpers, animals, feelings). These authors demonstrate that using ASL to assist in teaching about all those other topics will easily engage and enhance children's learning.--Kathy MacMillan, author of Try Your Hand at This: Easy Ways to Incorporate Sign Language into Your Programs

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource
This book is an easy to understand approach to incorporating ASL into hearing educational venues. Its step-by-step approach is backed up by the discussion of down to earth techniques that must be employed to reach the target audience - children and their families.I like that it borrows from another culture to establish a calm, controlled environment among those who most benefit from order, structure, and discipline - our children! And they include a healthy dollop of creativity! Thanks to Ms. Dennis and Ms. Azpiri for sharing their work with the general public! It is chock full of ideas to get you started.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Parents, Too
I am not an early childhood educator, but I am the parent of a toddler who is rapidly maxing out my sign language abilities. This book is perfect for us.

Unlike many sign language dictionaries which are intended for adults, this book includes just the vocabulary you use with small children: colors, numbers, shapes, family members, weather, feelings, behavior, and more.

Though I mainly bought the book for the signs, the lesson plans also provide some fun ideas for games to play with your child.

I am giving it four stars because some of the sign pictures are not very easy to interpret. They do have good descriptions accompanying them, but you have to already know what the "S hand" looks like, for instance. If you have some basic ASL familiarity, you can figure them out, but it might be hard for very inexperienced signers to read.

Overall, though, I highly recommend this for parents who are signing with their children! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best activity book for toddlers 12-24 months
I really like this book a lot!It doesn't require me to go out and buy a bunch of craft supplies- Jackie Silberg just gives basic, simple ideas of games and activities for my 17 month old.Are the ideas revolutionary?Well, no... but it really has helped a clueless mom like me just come up with some things to do!Sometimes when you are home with a baby all day, you start running out of ideas. It is nice to have a simple reference book for times like these. Some items in the book are:"cook" with your baby by shaking apples with cinnamon and sugar in a plastic container, make pop up toys, open junk mail, etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars helpful
Good book, was helpful for those off days when I was drawing a blank :)

2-0 out of 5 stars Not impressive
This book is full of not much. There are a handful of interesting, thoughtful games, but mostly it is totally ridiculous, like - go outside and feel the wind in your hair and hold a worm in your hand, or build a tent indoors with a sheet draped over a couple of chairs.Maybe useful to someone who has never played before, but there is almost nothing in this book that is new or interesting for any parent who was once a child or has spent even a minimal amount of time around children. Not worth the money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was diappointed in this book.I expected a whole bunch of ideas for simple games. What I got was a book which spells out what we already do with our daughter.
The "games" consist of things as obvious as pointing to a toy and naming it then having your child point to their toys as you name them.I mean, who doesn't know to ask thier child "Where's your kitty toy?" or doing this little piggy with them.
Those are not "games" so much as simply interacting with your child. And I certianly don't need a book to tell me to do that!

3-0 out of 5 stars satisfied
I am a stay at home mom and I try to have activity books on hand to be helpful to me, even if it reminds me or gets my creativity flowing again. If you are an educator, I have read Pam Schiller books and I feel they are geared in format towards educators. If you want activities to plan for this book and judy herr books are layed out in a more organized manner. ...
