5-0 out of 5 stars More information
I'm cheating a bit because this is my own book and I'm proud of it. (You may disregard my rating--winks). Not only does "ABC, Follow Me!" help children with the sounds of letters (phonemic awareness), but it also helps them recognize and differentiate letter symbols. The crafts are included not just for their fun value, but also because they help children get a kinetic feel for letter shapes--something that can be very useful for dyslexic learners. For example, one craft suggests that children cut out large letters and then place a sheet of paper over the cut-out and make a rubbing. Also included are playground activities using letter chants, dramatic play suggestions, ideas for related creative art projects, and bibliographies of additional useful resources.

5-0 out of 5 stars For all K & Grade 1 Teachers
Every kindergarten and first grade teacher needs this book! Fun rhymes teach and reinforce phonemic awareness. Crafts are age-appropriate and inexpensive, created with materials most teachers have on hand. Craft patterns are included, as well as photos of the finished product. The lessons offered are great ways to engage children in learning. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable phonics poems!
Unlike the last person, I wasn't looking for classic poetry. This book is useful for "Word Study" activities just as the title suggests. It is easy to utilize in the classroom and includes photographs, and lesson ideas for EACH poem.I have been teaching 1st grade for 6 years and this is exactly what I've been looking for.Easy enough for beginning readers to be successful and gets more difficult for different skill levels. This book of poems includes poems for different word families, consonant digraphs... a perfect addition to any explicit phonics program.Much more fun that traditional "basals".Love the book!

2-0 out of 5 stars I wanted to like it....
I really wanted to like this book. I love Heinemman books. It sounded great. But the poems weren't "real" poems. They were just like the ones that come with my basal program that use every possible word with a certain sound (look, book, cook, hook, etc), make up rhymes with little or no poetic value, and call them poems. It just wasn't what I wanted. I put it aside for a few days, and then tried to check out again - I still feel the same. I love using poetry to teach with in my classroom, but I won't be adding this to my collection - I decided to return it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, Ready to Use Ideas!

As a 3rd grader teacher who has a classroom of English-speaking and ELL students, I need practical, easy to use 6-trait writing ideas that can reach both sets of writers.Megan Sloan's book does just that! Her welcoming tone invites you into her classroom as she narrates how she "thinks aloud" with her students about ways to improve and clarify their writing. In each chapter, one of the 6 traits is described followed by 4-5 lessons on that trait. Sloan has also gathered a list of fiction and non-fiction books to assist in exploring each trait, many of which can be easily accessed in a school or public library.

Some writing process books give long, detailed explanations of the traits and ways to use them, but I found these mini-lessons to be quick reads that you can try with your students the next day.I read this book with my ELLs in mind, looking for ways to make the traits comprehensible to them.In each lesson, Sloan models how she scaffolds the writing process, ultimately letting students take charge of their writing.Students can use the traits in simple, but powerful ways to become stronger writers. If you're a busy teacher (and who isn't!), then this easy-to-use book is a smart investment!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical minilessons linked to writing traits
If you're looking for really practical ideas for minilessons that can help students improve their writing Trait Based Mini-Lessons is just the book for you.Individual chapters address each of the six traits that she teaches during writing workshop. As a master classroom teacher, Megan describes her minilessons with enough detail, along with samples of student work and suggestions for children's books, that you will be eager to try these writerly tips with your students.Megan explains, "When the traits are well defined for students, they will have a clear sense of what they are aiming for in their writing. And, once students have finished a piece, they can use the traits to analyze its strengths and weaknesses" (2005, p. 92).

1-0 out of 5 stars Not that useful for the homeschooler
I read long narratives about trait based writing and ideas for public school classrooms, but I think this book would have been more useful with reproducible lessons already created and some examples of students' writing, to show what one could achieve. Some of the author's ideas were good but it would have been much better and more useful if she had laid out her lessons with the forms for each lessons together with the lesson. For my money I like Barbara Mariconda's "Super Story-Writing Strategies & Activities" and by the same author "The Most Wonderful Writing Lessons Ever." also 25 Mini-Lessons for Teaching Writing by Adele Fiderer. These three little books I have found myself coming back to day after day to help zero in on the needs of the student.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
This book has step by step lesson ideas that will work well in my 3rd grade classroom. It also lists other books for the traits which enabled me to go through my personal library to see with what books I could build my own lessons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
This is a great book for teaching the writing traits. And, it's easily adaptable to grades 5 and 6 also. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

Product Description
“When [my kindergartners] left me, they left me with the most wonderful memories and the imprints of their kisses upon my heart. To me, the blessed little events, the tiny magical moments, and the wonderful quick coincidences were like kisses.” —From the Introduction

A former kindergarten teacher, Christine Pisera Naman watched over many classes of five-year-olds as they made their way through the school year and discovered new things about themselves and the world around them. In Caterpillar Kisses, she turns her observations and insights into twelve delightful real-life vignettes, one for each month of the year.

The stories bring to life events, large and small, that help these wiggly, unsure caterpillars grow into beautiful and confident butterflies. From a first trip to the zoo to making angels in the snow, the kids embrace every new experience with all the silliness, enthusiasm, and wonder familiar to anyone who has spent time with a five-year-old.Naman explores the more difficult moments of childhood as well, offering sensitive, reassuring stories about the fear of thunderstorms and encountering death for the first time. Life lessons are tucked within everyday activities, including a hilarious session of learning (literally) how to walk in the other guy’s shoes and another emphasizing the importance of making others feel accepted. But the students are not the only ones undergoing change. During the course of the year, their teacher learns the best way to deal with too many “apples for the teacher” and comes to understand the true meaning of spirituality and the simple joy of dancing in the rain.

Alternately laugh-out-loud funny and poignant, Caterpillar Kisses illustrates the good things that come from looking at life through the eyes of children. It is perfect for anyone looking for the magic in everyday life.

“Luminous! Sometimes, when spending time with children, it is just so clear that they are our teachers.  Caterpillar Kisses shows us some of the small but tender lessons we stumble upon during the metamorphosis that occurs each and every day in a young child’s life.”

—Ann S. Ruethling, founder and vice president of merchandising, Chinaberry, Inc. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Will make your heart sing
Sometimes, when we read a book, we just want to feel good. We want to feel that the hard work and dedication to something we believe in, is in fact worth it. If you agree with these statements, Caterpillar Kisses by Christine Pisera Naman is a book you don't want to miss.

Pisera Naman is a former kindergarten teacher who, while teaching and caring for numerous classes over the years, watched her charges change from wiggly little caterpillars to confident new butterflies. Along the way Pisera Naman realizes that not only are the children learning about themselves and their world but that she is learning and changing also.

The twelve vignettes shared in this little book are poignant, funny, exhilarating, hopeful and life-affirming. And they can only be told by an adult who cares enough to really see the miracles of life through the eyes of children. For anyone who wants and needs to see the magic in the world.
