Product Description
David Wray offers a range of practical suggestions for enhancing literacy work in primary and secondary schools (KS 1-3). The book is based on the idea that the purpose of literacy teaching is to enable pupils to understand and create meaningful, whole texts. It deliberately takes a cross-curricular view of literacy and will appeal to teachers who specialize in a range of subjects. It also explores in-depth the processes involved in both understanding and composing a range of text types, avoiding the temptation to segment literacy skills, thereby losing sight of the overall purpose.

The book is aimed at primary teachers and student teachers with an interest in extending their pupils' experiences of texts across the curriculum; and at secondary teachers (especially English teachers) who wish to include in their subject teaching more explicit attention to their pupils' literacy skills. ... Product Description
Good teachers are always looking for ways to help beginning readers and writers to understand what literacy is, how it works, who uses it, and what it is used for. Children who understand the nature and purpose of literacy are going to find learning to read and write a more satisfying, engaging and purposeful activity. One very rich source of ideas about literacy is those books, postcards and posters which feature illustrations of people engaging in the activity of reading and writing. In this book, the authors have gathered together information abourt such images, examined the nature of the demonstrations within them and considered a large range of ideas for developing activities based on the messages in the images. This fully illustrated book is a very practical aid to teachers of three- to eight-year-old children who want to extend their pupils' knowledge about the nature of reading and writing. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Success in Kindergarten Reading and Writing by Anne Adams
I used this book years ago in my kindergarten class and thought it was very useful in assisting young people with learning the oral/written connection.I now mentor elementary teachers and wanted to purchase the book to share with new teachers who don't have access to this wonderful material. The stages of writing are sometimes difficult for teachers to understand, but the illustrations, picture modules and labeling activities will be helpful instructional tools for beginning writers. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great starter for assessing in the beginning of the year
Iused 2 of the rubrics, one for writing, and one for spelling, they are great to use with primary grades, and the students did feel empowered assessing their own writing.

I dont know if I could use it all year, its good for seasonal assessment, i.e. beginning of the year, mid-year, and year-end.

Its the first rubrics book Ive used and purchased so its a great beginner, very easy to use. I wouldve liked to see more in the way of using them regularly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine...room or improvement.Elementary reading only.
The content is fine. The reproducible material, however, it not readily accessible. The pages could or should be perforated giving the option for removal. Also, the reproducible pages are mixed in with text such that itserves the organization of the book but not ease of access. These areminor but key if a classroom practitioner is conducting multiple informalassessments.Lastly, the content really serves elementary aged readers. Middle and upper grades may/will find the reproducibles' font size andgraphics childishly condescending. This is unfortunate as there are pupilswho would benefit from the content. ... Read more

Product Description
Early literacy has been thrust into the education spotlight with a flurry of recent research and U.S. federal initiatives focused on early reading and writing. Now, more than ever, preschool teachers feel mounting pressure to increase children's literacy development. This first book in the Preschool Literacy Collection will help preschool educators and administrators respond to these new challenges by providing the latest information on topics important to them and their young learners. Authors Carol Vukelich and James Christie present the foundations - the core content and best-practice strategies - needed to provide preschoolers with balanced, effective early literacy instruction. To help you develop this kind of instruction, the chapters offer ideas on how to read with young children, create a carefully planned print-rich environment, join children's play, plan a daily schedule that meets children's needs, and help parents help their children learn. A chapter linking standards with assessment and instruction will help you tie together everything you've learned.Plus, a glossary of key terms and appendixes containing suggested materials for thematic play settings and examples of state preschool standards will further enhance your reading. Preschool educators can use this book to ensure that their teaching reflects the developmentally appropriate content and strategies young children need to learn to be successful readers and writers. Preschool administrators can use this book to offer professional development opportunities that will help all teachers become more effective. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Inexpensive, Comprehensive Guide To EC Literacy
What I love about this book (as with all the books in this series) is the simplicity in comprehensiveness.

This book tells in a less than 200 page how to set up and enrich your classroom and instruction so as to foster literacy in young children. They not only elaborate on the concept of the read aloud and shared reading (for example) but also they talk about these techniques on a theoretical level (i.e. read alouds are a key application of teh language experience approach to teaching reading).

Get this excellent book as well as the other books in the series: WRITING IN PRESCHOOL, LEARNING ABOUT PRINT IN PRESCHOOL, ORAL LANGUAGE AND EARLY LITERACY IN PRESCHOOL,USING CHILDREN'S LITERATURE IN PRESCHOOL. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource for Intermediate Teachers and Higher
Combined with Jeni Pollack Day's Moving Forward With Literature Circles, Classroom Discussions is a terrific resource for getting students to think critically about the skills and topics they are learning. In a day and age when students are getting enough discussion at home, this is the perfect way to allow students to talk at school while focusing on the skills and curriculum. Dixie Lee Speigel's text makes it easy to take students beyond mere conversation and into a world of higher level thinking and metacognition (thinking about thinking). Discussion, combined with reading and writing, has become the heart of my classroom environment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading and Writing in Kindergarten
This product is an excellent resource for both the experienced and non-experienced teachers.I would even go as far as to say that it's scope does not end with kindergarten. The scripted conversations/lessons are verbatim for a model lesson. We used this as a book study for our kindergarten teachers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource & Ideas
I applaud all Kinder teachers, as a first year kinder teacher, this book was definetly one to read from cover to cover.
A veteran teacher recommended it to me.Wonderful insights and tips into helping students become emergent readers and writers.

5-0 out of 5 stars How Refreshing
Not only have I read Rosalie Franzese's book, I return to it constantly. Her ideas are remarkable. Put simply, they work. I'm taking her class right now, and 'observing' in NYC PS 19 (elementary), where she is coordinating numerous aspects of the school's transition from a phonics based literacy program to a balanced literacy approach. (Rosalie puts us to work! It gives us a chance to see this stuff in action, and to try it out.)
Her book though - extremely clear, well researched, proven techniques for helping kindergarteners learn to read. And frankly, the techniques she outlines for kindergarten instruction can be used (perhaps slightly modified) in the entire elementary school, at least. Her book combines the most positive and beneficial aspects of phonics and whole language instruction, and offers a balanced approach that works.
If you like this book, also look at Marie Clay's Observation Survey of Early Literacy Acheivement. (It's more or less what eclas is based on, for all you NYC-ers.) ... Read more

Product Description
Tray Tasking teaches parents and educators how to engage children in activities that promote whole body preparation for reading and writing skills while having fun. Children use common household items in new ways that lead to strengthened eye and hand coordination for future reading and writing success. A child manipulates the items organized on a tray using movements that require them to engage their eyes, arms and hands in left-to-right and top-to-bottom directions—the same directions used for reading and writing. The tray arrangements promote respect for materials and orderliness in a child’s world, and they reinforces that there is a place for everything and everything should be in its place. Teachers will value the opportunities tray tasks provide for authentically assessing children, and they’ll find the Tray Task Chart useful in tracking children’s progress. This book guides parents and teachers in involving children in activities that promote whole body preparation for reading and writing skills while having fun. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for early chilhood teachers
This is a text book for my Science, Math, and Literacy class. It is really great and a must have.I took this to work with me and everyone wants one.I have to share it and I'm the one with homework! lol.We are implementing 3 activities next week. All these activites lead to language development.I like how a lot of the tasks get the children to cross the midline. What I like most is that it tells and shows you how to set up the activities so that a child that hasn't decided on which hand they like to use can choose for himself. If you set tools on the right side, the child will naturally pick it up with their right hand.If you set them on top then the child will have to think about which hand to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is long overdue!
At last not only a "workbook" for the early childhood professional but one that parents can share with their children. Great learning tools with everyday items found around the house.
