I'm cheating a bit because this is my own book and I'm proud of it. (You may disregard my rating--winks). Not only does "ABC, Follow Me!" help children with the sounds of letters (phonemic awareness), but it also helps them recognize and differentiate letter symbols. The crafts are included not just for their fun value, but also because they help children get a kinetic feel for letter shapes--something that can be very useful for dyslexic learners. For example, one craft suggests that children cut out large letters and then place a sheet of paper over the cut-out and make a rubbing. Also included are playground activities using letter chants, dramatic play suggestions, ideas for related creative art projects, and bibliographies of additional useful resources.

5-0 out of 5 stars For all K & Grade 1 Teachers
Every kindergarten and first grade teacher needs this book! Fun rhymes teach and reinforce phonemic awareness. Crafts are age-appropriate and inexpensive, created with materials most teachers have on hand. Craft patterns are included, as well as photos of the finished product. The lessons offered are great ways to engage children in learning. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable phonics poems!
Unlike the last person, I wasn't looking for classic poetry. This book is useful for "Word Study" activities just as the title suggests. It is easy to utilize in the classroom and includes photographs, and lesson ideas for EACH poem.I have been teaching 1st grade for 6 years and this is exactly what I've been looking for.Easy enough for beginning readers to be successful and gets more difficult for different skill levels. This book of poems includes poems for different word families, consonant digraphs... a perfect addition to any explicit phonics program.Much more fun that traditional "basals".Love the book!

2-0 out of 5 stars I wanted to like it....
I really wanted to like this book. I love Heinemman books. It sounded great. But the poems weren't "real" poems. They were just like the ones that come with my basal program that use every possible word with a certain sound (look, book, cook, hook, etc), make up rhymes with little or no poetic value, and call them poems. It just wasn't what I wanted. I put it aside for a few days, and then tried to check out again - I still feel the same. I love using poetry to teach with in my classroom, but I won't be adding this to my collection - I decided to return it. ... Read more

As an educator who has taken some time off from teaching to raise a family, this book has been an exciting resource as my oldest is gearing up for his kindergarten year. It's extremely well-organized and filled with thoughtful ideas to develope reading and writing skills.I love the anchor text suggestions and the many student examples throughout the book.It makes me want to get back in the classroom.

This book has been so helpful!I am a kindergarten teacher, and I was looking for some other concrete ideas on enhancing my literacy block and writer's workshop. This book has been wonderful as I am also continuing to implement the daily 5 in my classroom as well.I love this book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Curriculum!
I have been using the writing component of The Complete Year in Reading and Writing with my kindergarten students since the beginning of the year. The book is very easy to use with units on process, genre, strategy, and conventions laid out in a strategic way.I have seen my students blossom as writers as we go back to similar writing prompts throughout the year.As a teacher I see their progress as they write "longer and stronger."More importantly my students are seeing their own progress. The program encourages students to use each other as resources to grow as writers. In this way, they also grow as storytellers, sharing their ideas with each other.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a joyous and wonderful resource for teachers!
The Complete Year series is a wonderful, rich, and empowering resource for teachers. The series provides just the support and structure you need with the flexibility you have always wanted. 3-0 out of 5 stars My least favorite of the Eloise Ready-To-Read books
I love these books, and so does my daughter. It's a nice way for me to introduce Eloise, and she loves the stories of Eloise.

This is my least favorite of the books, though.Eloise has a math lesson with her tutor, Philip, but she doesn't want to do math.It doesn't go to the level of math is hard, like Barbie did, but it would've been nice if it were English that she didn't like, or French, or History.Math is touchy.

Of course, in the end (I hope I'm not spoiling anything!) Eloise is more than capable of doing the math, but that's beside the point. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING PROGRAM!
As a first-time homeschooler, I bought way too much curricula to start teaching a kindergartner. Turns out, for teaching reading and writing, all I really needed, to start out, was this book! It's incredibly easy to teach, and while it begins slowly, it's worth it to stay with it! If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Very Best, even for adolescents who have never learned to read
I taught my 4yr6moold son to read using this book, which was unbelievably fast and easy, but that was probably because he was extremely eager to learn and a sharp kid overall.
What I found MUCH more impressive is that I successfully taught two third graders who were WAY behind reading level, AND a 14 year old who was illiterate, as a volunteer reading teacher.(I am a physician, not a teacher, so I had no special background. But illiteracy is as bad a handicap as many diseases, and I was motivated.)When I received an invitation four years later to the young man's high school graduation, and learned he was getting a regular diploma and had been accepted into a vocational training program for engine repair, I was overwhelmed with gratitude for the folks who wrote this book. Most teenagers would have been too bored by this book, perhaps, but this boy had DRIVE.(Maybe his drive and my determination mattered more than the book, but I doubt it.)
I drove 125 miles back to my old home town to attend his high school graduation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I received this book in great condition and very quickly. I will be happy to purchase from this seller again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best so far
My three year old is on lesson 30.I've recently decided to cut the lessons in half.I'm teaching him to read because he knows the letters and sounds. It's just an appropriate next step. This book isn't easy for a three year old, but he is learning to read.We are considering starting over at the beginning to put the wind back into his sails. It's exciting to learn to read.He sometimes says "Thank you mommy for teaching me to read."

3-0 out of 5 stars Not great but not bad...
This book came highly recommended to me by someone that I truly respect in teaching. She taught her three children how to read with this book and they were 2 grade levels ahead when they started school. I started this book with my 5 year old to teach him to read. He was familiar with letters so to have this book go soely on the sounds the letter make, not the name of the letter, was difficult to maneuver. It is repetitive, and that was very boring to my son who was familiar with some of the concepts. I believe that repetition is a good thing. I am not sure if my son and I didn't enjoy learning with this book because it was so repetitive and he was too old for it, or I was just not using it correctly. We made it through the first 6 lessons and I know people who love this book and others whom it did not fit their learning situation. This book, like any other curriculum, suits some kids not all. It is also noteworthy that my son has ADD and sitting still for the neccessary 12 mins to take care of the lesson was torture (it took 20-30 mins. because of the moaning and groaning). I know this is not so for many other children. So there are my 2 cents worth, I hope it helps you make a more informed decision. ... Read more

The speed drills are quick, easy to manage in small groups and help students reach attainable goals.

2-0 out of 5 stars Marginal Usefulness
Although the information in this book is useful, it is not the activity book that the shopper might be expecting. The fluency passages are too few, and the lower-level passages are reapeated twice on the page. While this makes duplication easy, it sacrifices additional fluency passage inclusion. Although some of the speed drills and word activities are useful, this book is a little light on content.

Margaret Clark, highly respected in the field, uses her own unique approach to illustrate:

  • how to avoid common pitfalls in misrepresenting research findings
  • what questions should be asked in order to help inform students’ own research projects
  • how findings can be applied and used in the classroom or nursery to improve practice.

The book is divided into clear sections for ease of use and is suitable for those with no prior expertise in research and research methodologies. It will prove an invaluable and fascinating read for undergraduate and postgraduate students taking courses in early years education and practitioners undertaking continuing professional development.
