5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehension Mini-Lessons
I love this book! I just started using it this week with my study skills class and it is wonderful! My junior high students did not have a clue about inferences and this book has easy to follow mini-lessons that are truly planned out for you. There is little preparation involved and the lessons are valuable. If you want your students to stop asking you"where is the answer to ....", or telling you they can't find the answer (because it is not on the lowest level of Bloom's taxonomy) this is the book to start with! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Service
Book was as described.Working on lessons for next year's students and found many ideas to use and adapt. If you are looking to introduce writing poetry with fun and structure for those students who need it, this book will provide you with ideas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and practical, yet somewhat random
I teach 6th grade language arts, and this book is a great companion for any poetry unit.It includes many poetry elements, from onomatopoeias to alliteration, and many of the lessons bring some new ideas about how to best help students develop an appreciation of poetry. This can be a challenge, but this book does offer ways to help develop the student's ability to play with words while using their own creativity. My only complaint would be the layout and order of the lessons, because I feel that they are somewhat random.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, high quality, well researched
Of the many poetry instruction books I have read, this one is the easiest to use.The poetry used is by well-known talented poets and of high quality. My class of children responded well and as predicted by theauthors. This is the only book I have found that discusses both formalverse and free verse in an enjoyable, nonbiased format. Its list ofreccommended reading is detailed without being overwhelming.I wish I hadthis book years ago! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Ummm. . .Am I missing something?
Yes, this book has short stories, but my inner-city middle graders are not interested in them.Students need stories that they can relate to.Maybe it is just me, but this has not proven to be helpful in my classroom, although it does add to the other bunch of books that I have on my shelf and it makes me look more well-read, I suppose. Please, don't waste your money!

4-0 out of 5 stars A helpful tool in my creative writing class
I have started using this well thought out book in my high school creative writing class. My students, most of whom are reading below grade level, easily understand the stories. The author notes and editor notes help me prepare them for their writing challenge.

This is a valuable teaching tool in my classroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have-Great with Middle School Writers!
This book includes SO MANY beautiful stories to share with students and stimulate their writing! This is my third year of teaching and I don't know what I would have done without this book. I was fortunate to find it here @ Amazon the summer before I began as a new educator. It really helped me set up my writing program for my 6th, 7th and 8th grade language arts students.

Another installment of the same kind of relevent topics and well-written samples would not be a horrible thing to release into the universe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource
I first checked this book out from the library, then decided that I had to buy it. It is packed full of literacy activities, from developing listening skills to emergent literacy to developing higher-level thinking. There are a lot of book lists, songs, games, activities, and tips. Each letter of the alphabet (inclusive of letters like vowels, c, g, y that have multiple sounds) has its own dedicated section of activities, including large and small group activities, songs/poems, books, and center ideas. The back of the book is LOADED with reproducible artwork and templates for the activities in the book. I'm no artist, so I'm looking forward to using those with my Pre-K class this year.I'm sure I will get tons of use out of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book ever!
This book is too good for words! I just checked it out from my library to preview. It's well worth the money. There are more activities, poems, fingerplays, and stories in this book than you can count. They aren't too dumbed down. There is a ton of humor thrown in too. My kids are going to find some of these songs so funny. The back of the book even includes patterns you can copy to go along with the activities. There are a few printable games, and many game ideas and directions. There are recipes included in the book.It can be used for pre-k- first grade, but is geared towards preK- K age kids. Another nice feature of the book is a word list to go with each letter of the alpahbet. Also, I have a hard time finding fresh ideas. With all the blogs and websites out there, it feels like I've heard of every activity there is. I'm finding a fresh idea or activity on almost every page of this book. Can't wait to buy my own copy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all parents of pre-school age children!
What a find! This book is worth it's weight in educational gold!Pam Schiller has written a wonderful book with games, songs and activities for every letter of the alphabet. There are many suggestions for pre reading skill builders too.If you only had one book to use for pre-school reading, this should be it! ... Book Excerpts:

The art of teaching is based primarily upon the science of psychology. In this book the authors have sought to make clear the principles of psychology which are involved in teaching, and to show definitely their application in the work of the classroom. The book has been written in language as free from technical terms as is possible.

In a discussion of the methods of teaching it is necessary to consider the ends or aims involved, as well as the process. The authors have, on this account, included a chapter on the work of the teacher, in which is discussed the aims of education.

The success or failure of the work of a teacher is determined by the changes which are brought to pass in the children who are being taught. This book, therefore, includes a chapter on the measurement of the achievements of children.

Throughout the book the discussion of the art of teaching is always modified by an acceptance upon the part of the writers of the social purpose of education.

The treatment of each topic will be found to be based upon investigations and researches in the fields of psychology and education which involve the measurement of the achievements of children and of adults under varying conditions.

Wherever possible, the relation between the principle of teaching laid down and the scientific inquiry upon which it is based is indicated.

Any careful study of the mental life and development of children reveals at the same time the unity and the diversity of the process involved.

For the sake of definiteness and clearness, the authors have differentiated between types of mental activity and the corresponding types of classroom exercises.

They have, at the same time, sought to make clear the interdependence of the various aspects of teaching method and the unity involved in mental development. ... Read more
