5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book for teachers
This book, or should I say this manual,is really important and helpful. I am a Ph.D student and I know exactly what it does mean to have a manual like this in schools. The manual gives you a chance to evaluate your students with special needs. Additionally, the manual follows the new trends in assessment and evaluation process through linking the assessment results with educational or intervention purposes. By using the Assessment Log and the Developmental Progress Chart, you, as a teacher, can link the ongoing assessment information with the IEP information for your students.
This manual will help you understand the developmental level and deviance for your students, as well as how to plan for age appropriate and functional interventions.

However, people need to be aware that it is NOT a formal assessment tool and should be used as a guide. The great thing about the Carolina is that it is very user friendly, making it a great tool for parents to use with ease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Children with Special Needs; Lessons for Early Childhood Pro
I found this book to be excellant. It follows the early childhood experience of a number of children with different special needs. It covers interviews from parents, educators, and family members.I felt the book really emphasizes the idea that these are, first and foremost, children. They need the same experiences as many "typical" developing children. It also hits hard on the subject of the parental involvement and how important it is in the "BIG PICTURE".I would recommend this book for anyone working with children, preschool teachers, elementary teachers, and childcare providers alike. It is an "Easy Read" full of great and useful information> ... Product Description
(2004 iParenting Media Award Winner)Many young children with special needs experience language delays and need additional help to build language skills. What better way to encourage communication development than through play? The completely updated third edition of THE NEW LANGUAGE OF TOYS, a perennial favorite of parents, speech-language pathologists, and early interventionists, offers a plan for doing just that.

The new edition presents sixty-five new toys and accompanying toy dialogs to use with children with a wide range of special needs from birth through age six. These sample toy dialogs show parents how to play purposefully with their child--using store-bought and homemade toys--to provide language learning opportunities and stimulate language development. The exercises are fun and educational, too, as parents help their child build receptive language skills (understanding), expressive language skills (communicating), and speech.

THE NEW LANGUAGE OF TOYS is organized by language developmental ages and each section includes:
toy dialogs; numerous photographs; a toy list; a list of suggested vocabulary and communication concepts; children's book bibliography; a checklist to track progress.

In addition, this book provides important background information about language, its sequential development, the causes of language delays, and how play can enhance language development. It also explains the use of videos, DVDs, television, and the computer as language enhancers. The resource lists are extensive, offering toy manufacturers and catalogs, support organizations, children's book information, and suggested materials for homemade toys.

With THE NEW LANGUAGE OF TOYS, parents can help their children make gains in their language development and have an enjoyable and rewarding experience while doing it.It's also a great tool for collaboration between parents and professionals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book!
This book has lots of great examples of dialogs to have with your child to help them develope language at every stage of development. Also there are suggested toys and tips on how to use them. However, the exact toys are hard to find to purchase for yourself. But, you can always find something similar. With each age group, there is also a list of sugggested books--which I really like. This book has taught me a lot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for New Parents
As a soon-to-be grandmother, I find myself looking at everything through the eyes of a new mother.Though I'm not sure that this book would be especially useful for teachers, I DO think it is an excellent resource for new parents on appropriate developmental stages. The charts for Language, Physical and Cognative milestones are worth the price of the book!Much more complete and practical than any baby book that I've seen, and a great tool if there are some developmental delays.I plan to buy a copy for each of my four daughters when they start their family!

1-0 out of 5 stars Check your copy carefully
The book is merely a list of toys, generally commercially available, that might stimulate or help a child communicate. My biggest complaint is with the printing.I wondered why young children (3 - 18 months) had so few notations, and discovered why yesterday...My copy jumps from page 50 to page 83.The pages didn't fall out of the binding - they were not included when the book was bound. So check yours when you buy.I am not sure if this a problem unique to me or not. However, I called the publisher and they sent me a replacement immediately and free.I did not have to hassle with sending back the defective one.Excellent customer service! ... Product Description

This comprehensive, practical book is built on solid theory and evidence-based practices from both the fields of Special Education and Early Childhood Education.  When the first edition was conceived in 1980, the authors encountered students who either had a strong special education background or a strong early childhood (child development) background.  Each group had a lot to learn from the other and a lot to contribute to the other.  The original purpose was to bring together the best from both fields into Early Childhood Special Education.

The book continues to take a practical, “activity based” approach that is theoretically sound and current. It also provides ample detail related to specific intervention strategies that enhance the effective use of embedded learning opportunities within daily curriculum activities and routines.  Its relatively jargon free, “readable” approach, that is built on evidence-based practices, make it appropriate for a wide range of readers.  The illustrations of techniques and strategies throughout make it sustainable as a resource..  It has always encouraged a family-centered, inclusive approach to working with young children with special needs and their families.

5-0 out of 5 stars found it at a library, now planning on buying it
I got this book a week ago at the local library (an older copy, probably from the first printing) and thought I'd check it out.I figured that if it gave me ANY ideas on stuff to do with my 3 year old, 2 year old, and 2 month old during this rainy weather we are having that it would be a good choice. So I got it home and read through it, and I LOVE this book!I've used several things in it for my 3 year old and my 2 year old, and found that there's a lot of stuff in the 2 sections that line up really well for the different ages.I'm not too creaative when it rains too much so this book has come in very handy, and its given me ideas that I may not have come up with at all if I hadn't checked the book out from the library. After 2 days of referencing this book I told my husband that I was buying it as soon as I could find a copy of it.He agreed with me after looking through it himself.I am very impressed with this book and am suggesting it to everyone I know with little kids, its already becoming a lifesaver and I dread taking it back to the library if I don't have my own copy beforehand.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you don't have it,GET IT!
This is the best of the best for new and old parents.I didn't read this until my 3rd and still found out all kinds of new things. The book is well thought out and planned.Easy to understand but most of all PRACTICAL.The ideas presented in this book don't require you to have a PH.D to apply.Nor does it require a six digit income to supply the items suggested for use.The women who wrote this book are obviously mothers.Which doesn't seem to be a requirement anymore for giving advice.
