Excerpt: The Maritimes have some unique foods partly because they have some foodstuffs that grow only in their area and partly because of cultural phenomena that have brought foods with them. Much of what is local food or regional cuisine there could be found in the foods of the Native Peoples or indigenous people, sometimes called Indians, whose cultures preceded those to be found in the Maritimes today. Fiddlehead greens (fiddlehead ferns, fiddleheads) are unique to Canada and to the Maritimes and can be served in various ways. Poutine rapee , an Acadian pork-potato dish, and rapee/rapie pie , an Acadian poultry dish, are Maritime-based. (Acadia, or Acadie in French, is the French Canada different from Montreal, based in the Maritimes, and known to those in the United States chiefly because Longfellow's Evangeline and the Cajuns of Louisiana originated there.) Seafood is of great importance in the Maritimes and it is prepared in many ways, probably limited only by the number of cooks. Lobster rolls are to be found wherever tourists go, but the locals love them too; these can be found in the United States as well, particularly in Maine, which adjoins the Province of New Brunswick, the only province with two official languages, French and English, which is an indication of the cultures one will find in this province between Quebec and Nova Scotia. No one who has visited the homes of Maritimers who go back a few generations is likely to forget dulse; dulse is seaweed of a certain type and grows along the New Brunswick and Nova Scotia coasts. Product Description

Strupac, fornenst, trappy, scriss, kippy, snool, flying axehandles, from across - these and hundreds of other fascinating and colourful words and phrases give the English language as it has been spoken in Canada's smallest province a flavour all its own. With the Dictionary of Prince Edward Island English, T.K. Pratt makes a major scholarly contribution to the growing list of regional dictionaries that enable us to discover the rich heritage of the language as spoken throughout North America; at the same time it offers a splendid general introduction to the historical and sociological life of the island.

There are approximately 1000 entries of non-standard or dialect words, past and present. The notes deal with usage, pronunciation, alternate forms and spellings, and stylistic and regional labels.Entries include definitions, supportive quotations from P.E.I. sources, editorial notes about various subtleties, and dictionary notes which provide links to some thirty-five other dictionaries.

Pratt's introduction defines the criteria for inclusion of words, explains his research methods, and outlines the layout of entries. The end matter includes a bibliography and an important sociolinguistic essay, 'The Dictionary in Profile,' which places the work in the broader context of Prince Edward Island speech.

Its range and depth of coverage make this an essential work not only for those concerned with P.E.I. and Maritimes studies, but for all those interested in the regional usage of English. ... Read more

Product Description
Since the publication of Anne of Green Gables in 1908, L.M. Montgomeryand the world of Anne have propelled themselves into a global culturalphenomenon, popular not only in Canada, but in places as diverse asJapan, the United States, and Iran. Making Avonlea, the first study tofocus on Montgomery and her characters as popular cultural icons, brings together twenty-three scholars from around the world to examineMontgomery's work, its place in our imagination, and more specificallyits myriad spin-offs including musicals, films, television series,t-shirts, dolls, and a tourist industry.

Invoking theories of popular culture, film, literature, drama, andtourism, the essayists probe the emotional attachment and loyalty ofmany generations of mostly female readers to Montgomery's books whilesimilarly scrutinizing the fierce controversies that surround thesebooks and their author's legacy in Canada. Twenty-five illustrationsof theatre and film stills, artwork, and popular cultural artefacts,as well as snapshot pieces featuring personal reflections onMontgomery's novels, are interwoven with scholarly essays to provide acomplete picture of the Montgomery cultural phenomenon. Mythopoetics, erotic romance, and visual imagination are subjects of discussion, asis the commercial success of various television series and movies, musicals, and plays based on the Anne books. Scholars are equallyconcerned with the challenges and disputes that surround thetranslation of Montgomery's work from print to screen as well as thegrowth of tourist sites and websites that have themselves movedAvonlea into new cultural landscapes. Making Avonlea allows the readerto travel to these sites and to consider Canada's most enduringliterary figures and celebrity author in light of their status asinternational icons almost one hundred years after they first arrivedon the scene. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting & Entertaining Read
I am a big fan of Anne of Green Gables. This is a great compilation of essays which discuss different issues of the Anne phenomenon and L.M.M. I found it really interesting to learn about the ways the books/movies impacted the world, like the popularity in Japan so much so that there's a Green Gables Theme Park there! The involvement of Disney in the movies and Road to Avonlea series and the way Canada and Disney approached their advertising etc in their respective countries was very surprising to me. I thought Anne was all Canadian! Other essays talk about Anne and Diana and hidden lesbian desire in L.M.M.'s books and another on descriptions of the island being erotic. (I personally don't agree with either of these thoughts and thought they were too over-the-top). Overall an interesting read. A lot of the essays seemed too detailed for me, as I'm just a general fan and not studying it for school or something like that. So I skimmed a lot. Overall a nice book for the general Anne fan but more appropriate for someone who really wants to analyze it. ... Read more
