Product Description

Chinese Printmaking Today analyses the contemporary manifestations of an art form that has long occupied an important place in Chinese art. Using works from the Muban Foundation, the foremost research collection of Chinese woodblock prints, the author shows how China's new artistic and political climate has produced images of surprising virtuosity and eloquence.

Through detailed examination of works by ninety artists, continuities and innovations in Chinese printmaking are explored. The works are grouped into seven broad themes: text and image, folk traditions, the political legacy, the concrete jungle, the land and its people, the human form, and new directions. Essays by Chinese and British scholars explore the political and literary context of printmaking in modern China; the role of Lu Xun, China's greatest twentieth century writer who was also an enthusiast for woodblock printing; and the materials, tools and techniques that Chinese printmakers use.

The history of China's academies of printmaking and short biographies of the print artists are included as appendices, along with a bibliography of works in Chinese, Japanese, and English.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to appreciate
The book has very clean design. Large format. Each print is illustrated on single page, following with artists info, concept behind and the method of each piece. It is a fancinating journey into the Chinese printmaking as well as the culture testing. Overall a great book to buy if you are really into woodcut, and wanna study some Chinese traditional wood carving methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ótima compra.
... Amazon.com Review
Another in the Abbeville's Tiny Folios series, this littlebook is a real gem. The Art Institute of Chicago houses one of theworld's most beautiful and comprehensive collections of Japanesewoodblock prints in the world. Clarence Buckingham, of the famedChicago family, donated 12,000 prints alone. The book covers thisexquisite collection of work from the 17th to 19th centuries in foursections: Primitives, Courtesans, Actors, and Landscapes. It includeswork by well-known masters such as Hiroshige, Hokusia, and Utamaro, aswell as lesser-known talents such as Shun'ei, Shunko, andKiyonaga. While the trim size is small, none of the subtle colors, delicate paper texture, or intricate fabric design is lost. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice LITTLE book
Contains a broad collection of Japanese woodblock prints spanning about 300 years, nicely divided by subject matter. Please note that the page size is only 4.5 x 4.25-in. and the average size of the prints are only 2 x 3-in. Wish it had been in a larger format. However there are 320 pages in this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tiny book
I purchased this book for my brother, thinking that it was regular size. When I visited him I discovered that it was big if you are the size of a gnome.

4-0 out of 5 stars NICE SURPRISES COME IN A SMALL PACKAGE?!
A true pocket-size book of Japanese prints from the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, this little guy packs in a good size punch in terms of number of woodblock prints (276 in all).Only 4 "x 4 ½" in size, the color reproductions of the prints are surprisingly good.Good and bright colors and one print on each page.Yeah, they're small, but you don't need to squint, and hey, you can stuff it into your pocket easily. The book is divided into four print categories - Primitives", "Courtesans", "Actors" and "Landscapes" and contains many less-known ukiyo-e artists - Eishi, Shunsho, Buncho, and many others that you would not see in other usual publications on Japanese woodblock prints. At the end of the book, there is an index on Kabuki actors represented in the prints and one on all the prints in the book (the latter is a rather interesting one). A nice "little" book filled with some pleasant surprises.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but small book
I agree with the other reviews when they say that it is nice, but a very small book.I hadn't paid attention to the size when I ordered it.It is very informative, though, and I did learn a lot from it

2-0 out of 5 stars A very small book, with smaller pictures.

The largest are about 2-1/2" x 3-1/4". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Beginning
If you want the truth, the struggle, the passion seen from both sides, begin here. Including are beautiful, intense posters, poetry, and more from Palestinian and Israeli artists. But this book goes beyond images and words, it goes into the hearts of the Palestinians and Israelis who want peace: a peace that can only be obtained by listening to the PEOPLE, setting disruptive, invasive, militaristic politics aside.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gives voice to unheard views
This book shows work up to 1996, so it does not contain any events from the past five years, or deal with the daily violence that we see on the news today. However, it does show that the violence is nothing new, and is not exclusive to the "Arab terrorists." The main focus of the book are how both sides view peace, showing the suffering on both sides. A point of view which never gets aired in the US media is represented by Israeli artists who openly acknowledge the brutality their government has forced upon the Palestinians. The book shows posters that foster peace between the two people, and were banned by the Israeli government.

Anyone who has any real understanding of this troubled region knows that true peace can only exist between equals, and that despite all the name calling, both the Palestinians and the Jews have a right to live with dignity.

From a graphic point of view, much of the posters from Israel maintain a more familiar Western commercial look, while many of the Palestinian works resemble the grafitti that covers the refugee camps.

Editorial Review

Product Description
One of the most glorious and creative periods in the history of colour printmaking occurred in 18th-century France. Newly invented engraving and etching techniques were combined with new ways of printing a single image from multiple plates, allowing printmakers to replicate a broad palette of colours using variants of only four: blue, red, yellow and black. The resulting prints were so believable that they were often called "printed paintings" and "engraved drawings". The names of the masters who pioneered these techniques are largely only familiar to scholars and collectors, but the artists whose compositions they copied include some of the greatest talents of the period - Watteau, Boucher, Fragonard and Boilly all feature, along with many others. One of very few books available in English on the subject, this publication is a useful addition to the literature on this topic. Reproducing all the featured prints in colour, the images are supported by a range of scholarly essays. ... Read more
