Product Description
Townsville-based artist Tate Adams is renowned for his wood engravings, a form of printmaking he first practised while illustrating limited edition books for Ireland's famous Dolmen Press. In Australia, he initiated something of a revolution in the art of printmaking through his teaching at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology from 1960-1982, and his establishment of the Crossley Gallery with early exhibitions of prints by artists such as Fred Williams, John Brack, George Baldessin and many others. He also established, with George Baldessin, the Lyre Bird Press for the publication of limited edition artists' books. During the past decade he has moved from the miniature art of wood engraving, in which he is an internationally acknowledged master, to the painting of large scale gestural works executed in gouache on paper. The vitality of these recent works is astonishing. This Mini-Book, No 15 in Macmillan Art Publishing's series, provides an overview of Tate Adams's art in both wood engraving and the recent abstract painting. ... Read more

This book provides a broad and challenging source of information on the most exciting cutting-edge developments in international printmaking. It showcases the diverse work of fifty-two artists from twenty-eight countries, exploring the mediums used by these artists—from new variations on traditional intaglio and relief techniques to extreme forms of digital techniques, including time-based forms such as film and multimedia presentation. Printmaking continues to evolve, and artists develop traditional techniques while experimenting with new methods and materials. Critical Mass also explores how their craft is evolving the role and function of art in an increasingly technological global society as the boundaries between the distinct fields of the visual arts have become blurred, and growing numbers of artists now incorporate printmaking techniques within their practice.

Product Description
The pictures of beautiful and powerful women by artists of the Boudoir art movement occupy an important place in the history of twentieth century art. The popularity of Louis Icart led less well-known French artists to create countless engraved works in a style similar to his. This new book resurrects the knowledge about these artists and their work. Beautifully illustrated in full color with hundreds of examples of Boudoir art, the book chronicles "major" and "minor" artists. While the greatest emphasis is on the wonderful Boudoir etchings, the book also covers Boudoir lithographs, which were also quite popular in their day. Invaluable information about the art and artists accompany the photos. Both the French and American titles (when know), the size of the picture's image, the number of copies printed, and the exact wording of copyright declarations whenever known are included. A Price Guide, based on the current economy, will give beginners some perspective, but use it cautiously in this new and unpredictable field. ... Read more

Product Description
Watercolor images of Yellowstone Park painted in the early 1870s by artist Thomas Moran shifted America's gaze westward. Published as a portfolio of chromolithographs by Boston lithographer Louis Prang, these brilliant reproductions--with a companion text on Yellowstone geology by explorer Ferdinand Hayden--were the first color images of our first national park widely available to the general public. As such, they helped shape America's growing fascination with the West.

The Yellowstone National Park portfolio, comprising nine images of Yellowstone and six of other sites, is also now regarded as the finest example of chromolithography ever produced. Yet today these images are less well known than Moran's dramatic oil paintings and are usually admired merely as curiosities of an obsolete technology.

Joni Kinsey, a preeminent authority on Moran, shows that these and other chromolithographs by the artist in fact had an important place in American visual culture and were a vital part of the artist's career. Thomas Moran's West reproduces this renowned collection, along with two dozen other color plates and over 100 black-and-white illustrations, to recapture their impact on the American imagination.

Chromolithography was outmoded by 1900 but represented an important transition in American art. Whereas previously published images of the West had been black-and-white engravings, Moran's chromolithographs had the vivid beauty of high art but could be acquired by individuals who couldn't afford originals. Today the prints are highly valued by collectors, who will appreciate seeing them with related field sketches and watercolors--and in some instances rare printer's proofs from Joslyn Art Museum. Kinsey describes the making and popularity of "chromos," chronicles the debates over their artistic legitimacy, and tells how this medium competed with other forms of picture-making in the late nineteenth century. She also explores Moran's relationship with Prang and thoroughly analyzes the Yellowstone images--including those held back from publication.

Both a visual feast and an authoritative treatise, Thomas Moran's West gives us breath-taking images of unspoiled wilderness as it sheds new light on how artistic portrayals of the West contributed to our national identity.

This book features 167 photographs, 50 in full color. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superior publication on lithography.
The superior color print quality of the many Thomas Moran oil painting, watercolor and chromolithograph reproductions herein distinguishes this book from many others. The Louis Prang chromolithographs from the mid 1800s taken from these works established an historic milestone in printmaking. Never before in contemporary art historic literature has such attention been paid to Moran's "Yellowstone Portfolio" and the chromolithography movement in general.Author Joni Kinsey places Moran, Prang and chromolithography within their cultural contexts."Thomas Moran's West" is one of only two published current studies on the subject of chromolithography and the only on Moran chromos. The other is "Democratic Art: An Exhibition on the History of Chromolithography in America 1840-1900". Few of Moran's numerous b/w etchings are represented. For the etchings see "The Prints of Thomas Moran in the Thomas Gilcrease Institute" by Anne Morand and Nancy Friese. "Thomas Moran's West" is highly recommended but not at the price quoted by these sellers. I was lucky and got a discarded library copy that is in perfect condition for a mere $99.00! ... Read more

Product Description

More than a generation before the invention of Gutenberg’s celebrated press, the new technology of image printing emerged. In this book, a distinguished group of scholars treats the earliest manifestations of printing in all aspects: technical experimentation, the complex relation of printed books to printed images, individual and institutional patronage, new iconographies, religious propaganda, and the wide variety of private and public ways in which printed images were first employed.

The essays examine the technological, social, political, religious, personal, and institutional contexts of 15th-century woodcuts and challenge many assumptions about the phenomenon of early printing, including the beginnings of printing on cloth, the significance of monastic production, the development of book printing and book illustration, and the extent to which printing can or should be termed a “revolution.”

4-0 out of 5 stars specialist publication on European woodcuts
This book is a record of proceedings of a symposium held in the National Gallery of Art in 2005. As such it would be primarily aimed at experts in this field of study. For such a person the book should have a 5 star rating. As a non expert I found much of the text technical and a bit of a struggle to digest. The main compensation for me was the liberal quantity of interesting and attractive illustrations of various woodcuts, illuminated manuscripts, paintings etc.

This print quality of thisbook is very high as are the photographic illustrations. This is primarily a specialist publication. ... Read more

Product Description
In this engrossing book, Hollis Clayson provides the first description and analysis of French artistic interest in women prostitutes, examining how the subject was treated in the art of the 1870s and 1880s by such avant-garde painters as Cezanne, Degas, Manet, and Renoir, as well as by the academic and low-brow painters who were their contemporaries. Clayson not only illuminates the imagery of prostitution-with its contradictory connotations of disgust and fascination-but also tackles the issues and problems relevant to women and men in a patriarchal society. She discusses the conspicuous sexual commerce during this era and the resulting public panic about the deterioration of social life and civilized mores. She describes the system that evolved out of regulating prostitutes and the subsequent rise of clandestine prostitutes who escaped police regulation and who were condemned both for blurring social boundaries and for spreading sexual licentiousness among their moral and social superiors. Clayson argues that the subject of covert prostitution was especially attractive to vanguard painters because it exemplified the commercialization and the ambiguity of modern life. This is a reprint of the book first published by Yale University Press in 1991. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The thinking is top notch
We do not have a very moral society at the moment, but the way an art critic can pick a theme that allows a tremendous amount of humor and social commentary to carry a reader through times that might make our future much more diverse if we can ever get our minds off the kind of economic crash that is our character as well as our fate at this late date astounds me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Insight
I always wondered why everyone was always so certain that "Olympia" was a prostitute. Now I know! This is a great book about an Era in France with some deep, dark secrets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Scholarly
I might not have purchased this book if it hadn't been included in a selection of bargain books from Yale University Press. The Acknowledgments on p. xv includes a comment on "My dissertation research inParis."My use of the term "modern" in my reviews conformsto the sense which I observe on page 79 of this book.A cartoon at the topof the page, called "M. Manet studying beautiful nature," datedApril 25, 1880, is followed by an explanation which "connects theextremity of exposed breasts to vulgarity and ugliness . . . by mocking anyconnection between this toilette and decorous feminine beauty."Thepainting which is then discussed, Henri Gervex's "Rolla," wasabruptly removed from the Salon of 1878 for impropriety, but was exhibitedby a private dealer for three months.Consideration of that painting inthis book begins with "Another instance of a painting that displaysfemale sexuality as something of a threat, and that locates this threatspecifically in the realm of modern fashion."(p. 79)The paintingwas based on a poem by Alfred de Musset about a son of the bourgeoisie whosquandered his fortune and committed suicide at the age of nineteen.Thedetails of the painting are discussed to such an extent that minor elementsof the picture become a great danger."Indeed the lack of restraintthat Gervex showed in placing the cain in the still life points to thevulnerability of the genre of the nude, to the ways in which the nude wasalmost always a strained synthesis of opposing forces, perpetually indanger of slipping out of equilibrium as a consequence of even the smallestpush in the direction of deviance."(p.88)The discussion of thatpainting concludes with "Rolla drowned in the rising tide of sexualvice. The woman was the culprit, and Rolla her victim."(p. 93) Chapter Four's topic is "Suspicious Professions" and featurespictures of working women, the intrigue being tied closely to the question, what makes them so cute? ... Product Description
Adolf Menzel was one of the most important German artists of the nineteenth century, yet he is scarcely known outside his native land. In this book a leading art historian argues that Menzel deserves to be recognized not only as one of the greatest painters and draftsmen of his century but also as a master realist whose work engages profoundly with an extraordinary range of issues-artistic, scientific, philosophical, sociopolitical. Michael Fried has written the first book in English to explore Menzel's large and fascinating oeuvre, and in so doing has made the artist's stupendous achievement accessible to a wide audience at last.

Fried compares Menzel's art to that of the nineteenth century's two other great realist painters, Courbet and Eakins. Analyzing paintings, drawings, and prints from all stages of Menzel's long career, he asserts that the distinctive quality of Menzel's realism is found in his concern with evoking the multi-sensory, fully embodied relationships of persons with the universe of physical objects, tools, and situations. Establishing connections between Menzel's work and a broad array of extra-artistic contexts, Fried has created a work of compelling originality, one that for the first time establishes Menzel as a key artist of modernity. ...
