Product Description

Managing Continuing Professional Development in Schools brings together commentary from experts in all aspects of CPD in schools. This timely analysis is essential reading for all teachers and those considering entering the profession. The teacher’s career is being redefined. The expectations of teachers as professionals are being clarified. This book, soundly based on experience in schools, helps guide teachers through this new world. The case studies explore good practice at all stages of the teacher’s career.

What has been learned is reconsidered in terms of the new national qualifications emerging. Similar changes are occurring in other professions, and for teachers throughout the world. It is clear that individual teachers need to take control of their own futures. There are opportunities for those who understand the new career model. There is a requirement for those leading and managing schools to clarify their perceptions to assist their colleagues. This book provides all this.

There will be increasing rigour in Initial Teacher Training and new modes of delivery. The intermediate stage of induction, not normally sufficiently focused on, will link with the emergent roles of subject leader and expert teacher. The relationship between these two will be particularly significant. This book provides a particularly strong basis for self-development in the earlier stages of the teacher’s professional career. The link between the NPQH, Headlamp and the expert headteacher, with, potentially, links to reaccreditation, is a complementary aspect of the model of lifelong learning which this book demonstrates. The challenge is for teachers to manage their careers. This book provides a basis for those responsible for professional development of teachers to understand the changing environment and enhance the self-esteem of the most important profession.

Product Description
This study demonstrates how theatre as representation is a successful teaching and learning tool for field educators in the area of educational administration. Theatre as Representation (TAR), is introduced as a provocation means or tool for school administrators (appointed or elected) to further their knowledge and field experience in the governance of their institutions. Using the subject vehicle of 'executive succession', a supporting literature, and research methodology (data collection, analysis and its findings), an original dramatic script was created entitled Transitional Wars. It was performed in front of an audience of educators. Reaction to the presentation was collected and analyzed. The conclusion was that theatre as representation is a successful teaching and learning tool for field educators in the area of educational administration. It was clear that promotion was a 'political act' where several stakeholders fought for their interests. There were three sequential episodes to this study. First was the collection of data collection, its analysis, and conclusions.Second was the transcendence protocol - the movement from the data conclusions to the original dramatic scenario - the evolution from science to art form; its creation, production, and performance to in-service administrators and educators. Third was the overall analysis to judging its effectiveness as an administrator professional development tool. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning Circles and Mentoring
Learning Circles was designed for teachers in the elementary and secondary schools and those individuals involved with teacher professional development. "Learning circles", as defined by the authors, aresmall groups of learners who come together to support each other inlearning. The authors discuss the six key conditions needed to create a"learning circle."These conditions are:

Building Community "...building community means making sure members get to know wonanother, their work histories, their life stories, and their areas ofinterest." (pg. 9)

"...is a basic condition necessary forempowered learning by individuals and for the group as a whole." (pg.9)

4 stages of building community -- initialingmaintaining sustainingtransforming

Constructing Knowledge -- "Teachingcannot be based on telling learners what we think they should know but mustbe done by engaging them through active learning experiences so they formtheir own conclusions about situations presented to them." (pg. 10) Should be a constructivist learning environment--engage thelearner

Supporting Learners -- the participants should share a commongoal, this goal is created together and made explicit, participants mustfeel valued by other group members

Documenting Reflection -- keepingjournals, analyzing student learning, videotaping teaching sessions forpeer review, summarizing learning circle gatherings

"Metaphors aremirrors in which we observe ourselves and windows through which ourcolleagues can gaze." (pg. 69)

Assessing Expectations -- groupdetermines expectations collectively, group agrees on a process forassessing, individual progress, create and maintain portfolios todemonstrate personal growth and professional change,Approaches toAssessment -- Self-Assessment,Peer-Assessment,PortfolioAssessment

Changing Cultures -- cultures are constantly changing--membersof "learning circles" should engage in "thinking about howthe culture of their classroom and students or their businesses, churches,or organizations could be changed by their individual or collectiveefforts." (pg. 11)

Ways to learn about cultures -- artifacts, dance, acting

You may be wondering what all of this has to do withMentoring.""Learning circles" are based on the earliestunderstanding of how people learn--through mentorship." (pg. 106)The learning circle offers possibilities of "group mentorship",where several people work closely together for the good of the group.(pg.107)A group, that I'm working with at this time is a "learningcircle".We have all the conditions required to have a "learningcircle."We are also mentoring each other. The authors say thatmentoring plays a critical role in the transformation of an organization. They give 3 roles for the mentor in any group:

Mentors must be competentand qualified in their own right

Mentors accept responsibility for theculture

Mentors identify ways they can formally and informally structurethe learning of new members and experienced colleagues ... Read more

Product Description
Within the last two decades, India has not only enactedspecific legislation on environmental protection but has alsovirtually created a new fundamental right to a clean environment inthe Constitution. The models and methods adopted in the Indian contextappear, at first sight, similar to those in other common law systems.Yet there are many subtle differences which have changed the structureand content of legal development in India. Indian environmentaljurisprudence brings out the unique characteristics of a new legalorder which has gradually been established in India. The distinguishing nature of this jurisprudence, as this book shows indetail, has three interconnected elements. First, the nature of thenew Indian constitutional law regime accords greater importance topublic concerns than protecting private interests. Secondly, thisjurisprudential development reflects certain aspects of Indian legalculture, through implicit and explicit reliance on autochthonousvalues and concepts of law, encapsulated in the Indian juristicpostulate of dharma. Thirdly, the emerging Indian environmentaljurisprudence bears testimony to the activist role of the Indianjudiciary which has also had a significant impact in many areas otherthan environmental law. In short, the development of environmentaljurisprudence in India manifests neo-dharmic jurisprudence inpostmodern public law. It accommodates ideas currently voiced byexperts around the world for protecting the environment in formsmodified by the Indian legal culture. ... Read more
