Product Description
In this book Greg Elmer brings the perspectives of cultural and media studies to the subject of consumer profiling and feedback technology in the digital economy. He examines the multiplicity of processes that monitor consumers and automatically collect, store, and cross-reference personal information. When we buy a book at Amazon.com or a kayak from L.L. Bean, our transactions are recorded, stored, and deployed to forecast our future behavior--thus we may receive solicitations to buy another book by the same author or the latest in kayaking gear. Elmer charts this process, explaining the technologies that make it possible and examining the social and political implications.Elmer begins by establishing a theoretical framework for his discussion, proposing a "diagrammatic approach" that draws on but questions Foucault's theory of surveillance. In the second part of the book, he presents the historical background of the technology of consumer profiling, including such pre-electronic tools as the census and the warranty card, and describes the software and technology in use today for demographic mapping. In the third part, he looks at two case studies--a marketing event sponsored by Molson that was held in the Canadian Arctic (contrasting the attendees and the indigenous inhabitants) and the use of "cookies" to collect personal information on the World Wide Web, which (along with other similar technologies) automate the process of information collection and cross-referencing. Elmer concludes by considering the politics of profiling, arguing that we must begin to question our everyday electronic routines. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed With Knowledge!
Greg Elmer pulls the veil off the universal practice of consumer profiling and data-collection, and demonstrates its deep societal influence. Daily, when you swipe a credit card or buy a magazine or go online, your personal habits are monitored - and someone will use that information to make a buck. Both in terms of its topic and its treatment, this book should be too theoretical to hold much interest for the business public. Who cares about communications theory as applied to the continual mapping of personal consumer information? However, you can't push this into a dusty corner, because the subtle cultural effect of the increasingly close monitoring and data mining of consumer behavior is too powerful to overlook. While the book has a slightly dry, academic direction, we still strongly recommend it to those who are curious whether the juggernaut economic machine will steamroll over the privacy rights of those who use and feed it.

Product Description

Complex and controversial, hackers possess a wily, fascinating talent, the machinations of which are shrouded in secrecy. Providing in-depth exploration into this largely uncharted territory, Profiling Hackers: The Science of Criminal Profiling as Applied to the World of Hacking offers insight into the hacking realm by telling attention-grabbing tales about bizarre characters that practice hacking as an art.

Focusing on the relationship between technology and crime and drawn from the research conducted by the Hackers Profiling Project (HPP), this volume applies the behavioral science of criminal profiling to the world of internet predators. The authors reveal hidden aspects of the cyber-crime underground, answering questions such as: Who is a real hacker? What life does a hacker lead when not on-line? Is it possible to determine a hacker’s profile on the basis of his behavior or types of intrusion? What is the motive behind phishing, pharming, viruses, and worms?

After gaining notoriety for breaking into many high-profile computer systems, the Italian hacker Raoul Chiesa turned to ethical hacking in 1995. Today he uses his skills and abilities to find ways to protect networks and computer systems. Stefania Ducci is a member of the Counter Human Trafficking and Emerging Crimes Unit at the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI). Silvio Ciappi is a criminologist who lectures at the University of Pisa and studies criminal profiling. These three experts with vastly different backgrounds explore the clandestine network of cyber-criminals, providing an unparalleled glimpse into the secret lives of these malevolent individuals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Learning from an insider
This book is an excellent guide to familiarize oneself with the issues of cyberspace. It not only provides an overview of the history, ethics, and types of hacking but outlines the different actors, differentiates their actions, and proposes a typology. It is therefore one of the few books on this topic that moves beyond the anecdotal and is an attempt at a more substantive, long-term approach to examine critical issues tied to cyberspace, notably the profiling of criminal hackers. Written by an insider yet accessible to novices it is particularly the systematic overview of techniques and actors that are a strength of this book and make it a good read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A refreshing and honest change!!!
After reading for several years the virtual propaganda that seems to have become the unfortunate norm in the field of criminal profiling a book has finally emerged which honestly and most importantly - objectively - canvasses all of the work in this area. Without a doubt this book is a significant triumph for anyone who seriously wants to 'learn' about criminal profiling as opposed to simply reading the usual aggrandizing rubbish so many authors in this field seem to produce. The book gives readers an excellent insight into the field and explains the strengths and weaknesses of the research - warts and all. For its objectivity alone I would give this book 10/10. ... Product Description
Ability Profiling and School Failure: One Child's Struggle to Be Seen as Competent explores the social and contextual forces that shape the appearance of academic ability and disability and how these forces influence the perception of academic underachievement of minority students. It is a powerful case study of a competent fifth grader, an African American boy growing up in a predominantly white, rural community, who was excluded from participating in science and literacy discourses within his classroom community.

The case study form allows for the integration of the story of the student's struggle to be seen as competent in school, a context where his teacher perceives him as learning disabled, with Collins' own perspective as a researcher and teacher-educator engaged in a professional development effort with the teacher. The contribution of this book is to make visible the situated and socially constructed nature of ability, identity, and achievement, and to illustrate the role of educational and social exclusion in positioning students within particular identities.

Highly relevant across the field of education, this book will particularly interest researchers, graduate students, and professionals in literacy and science education, curriculum and instruction, sociocultural theories of learning, discourse analysis of classrooms, research on teaching and learning, special education, social foundations, and teacher education.

Product Description

In basement offices three stories below the ground at the FBI's Academy in Quantico, Virginia, former Supervisory Agent Gregg McCrary was among the first generation of the most elite force for criminal investigation in the world.

In The Unknown Darkness, McCrary takes the reader behind the crime scene to examine in raw first–person close–up the lethal competition between America's most dangerous predators and the dedicated souls who pledge to put them away. McCrary's 25 years in the Bureau have yielded over 1000 cases to draw upon. The 10 he describes in the book reveal the strengths and pitfalls of modern criminal investigation.

McCrary is not afraid to answer the questions most often skirted by the others: what happens at the crime scene, what kind of person does it take to grapple with the serial killers among us, and exactly how do we disarm the enemy?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information and an interesting read!
I found this book to be very interesting. I learned a great deal about profiling, and the author used various cases to explain the training one must go through in order to become a profiler. The cases were interesting; I recognized a few because they were "famous," but others were ones with which I was not familiar. He goes into detail about what is involved with giving a profile as well as other types of work that he has done as part of the Behavioral Science Unit in the FBI. All of it is quite fascinating and very clear--you will definitely know what you need to do in order to get close to having a chance at a job like this if you are interested. If not, and you are just interested in what goes on with profiling and how serial killers/rapists, etc. are caught, I think you will still find it to be a captivating read.

5-0 out of 5 stars entertaining read
This genre can be kind of dark, but this book is well-written and certainly interesting. He covers numerous cases and the descriptions are fascinating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another perspective on Criminal Profiling
The Unknown Darkness: Profiling the Predators Among Us
Having read a large number of true crime books and many in the area of criminal profiling this is one I would highly recommend on the subject. McCrary comes across as one of the more modest of his many colleagues. The books chapters follow a number of well known cases such as Waco, The Sam Sheppard Case, The 'Ken and Barbie' case following Paul Bernardo as the Scarborough Rapest and his later murders. The book is cleverly written as each story portrays different aspects of Criminal Investigative Analysis from personality profiling, interview techniques, hostage negotiations, crime scene analysis etc. It is a well written, easy to read book for first time crime readers through to the avid fans of the genre.I found it very hard to put down until I had gone 'cover to cover'. McCrary's narrative and obvious knowledge flows easily throughout.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Peek into a Dark World
The book reads like a really long research paper, which will turn off some people. It's an intense read with case details and insights into dark minds. The transitions between chapters are nicely handled so that it doesn't seem like a collection of loosely connected notes.

It's not really a "fun" book, but it is informative and highly interesting. Those looking for thrills should look elsewhere, but those looking for honest, intellectual insight into how the predators think have found what they're looking for.

4-0 out of 5 stars Only for Crime Reading Enthusiasts!
Okay, I have read better books but I believe the author's role in the Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo's dispicable crimes in the murders of three innocent young ladies including Karla's sister is worth reading in the first place if you followed the crimes. Now, Karla is a free woman. Paul will be eligible for parole in 2020 according to the book. I understand profiling is not an exact science. The author writes about the miss in the Hindu Mass HOmicide case where nine innocent monks including a nun were killed execution style for literally peanuts of their wealth. They would have probably given them everything they asked for if they were given the opportunity. The author does lose me with the David Koresh and the Waco situation. I don't believe he firmly explained how dangerous Koresh was specifically. As a reader, we know he followed in the footsteps of another monster, Jim Jones, but the author never clarifies the process of Koresh's madness from leader to dictator in his small congregation. The book is really for crime enthusiasts like myself who enjoys reading about crime and what makes people tick. He is accurate in his depiction of Paul and Karla's crimes against young virginal women including Karla's sister, Tammy Lynn. She was a Christmas Present for Paul from his beloved fiance, Karla. Their relationship was twisted and Karla knew of Paul's crime spree as the Scarborough Rapist but supported it as a game. It still angers me that Karla was released and that Paul may have a chance at parole. Write the Canadian parole boards to stop this from happening. As for Karla, she's the most hated woman in Canada. He also writes in detail about Arthur Shawcross's crimes as a serial killer. There is the European serial killer, Jack Untweger, but he doesn't go into detail about his crimes. He is not as clear as he is about Shawcross' crimes. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not much here
I'm looking for something to help me "prejudge" a new player to the table and he really doesn't give me much that would be helpful. I'm glad I didn't pay full price.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing insightful here
Most everything included here is common sense. There are a few important concepts included here, but they are better covered in other texts.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just Common Knowledge
I didn't find much use for this book. This author's explanations on "profiling" will not help anyone who has basic common sense. The profiling facts offered don't translate into real help in beating the types of poker players we often confront.e.g. I'll paraphrase one profile: -People who refuse to tip the dealer after winning a hand are cheap and self-centered. People who do tip are typically compassionate and more likely to have a feel for what other people are doing.Do you want one more?OK. -People who dress smartly, wear expensive clothes and play in low-stakes poker games probably don't care as much about the money involved than the thrill of playing the game.If these common sense facts are new to you, and you think they can help you play better, then buy this book.If not, save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning to read opponents is key!
Wow!I have been reading alot of the recommended poker books to learn the pot odds, good starting hands, preflop, flop, and river play, etc... and I have become a winning player following all the suggestions in these books. Then, I came across Profiling Poker "Nitwits", read it, and tried these ideas as well with my game, and now my win rate has doubled! This book teaches you how to read your opponents, study their mannerisms at the table and while they are in a hand, and also helps you figure out based upon their appearance what kind of plays they would be inclined to make.Working on trying to figure out what your opponents will to do in any situation at the table, coupled with making the right percentage plays is definately key!I felt that something was missing from my game before I read this book...now I know.I had to learn to play the game from both angles, and I did.I'm thrilled this book came along...Thanks!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not much Here
This is a pretty short book that I believe lacks substance.I guess it is good to think about some of the items, but the entire book could have been summarized in 3 or 4 pages.I was hopeful at first when the author mentioned having researched FBI profiling techniques. This in itself would be interesting to me, but there seemed to be so much left out unless the FBI only has a small pamphlet on profiling. Some chapters seemed to be text cited from other sources with loose application, at best.I do not think there is much here except for 2 or 3 good points. Not worth the price if you ask me. ... Product Description
Serial Crime: Theoretical and Practical Issues in Behavioral Profiling examines serial predatory behavior and is comprised of two main parts. The first section deals with behavioral profiling, and covers a variety of critical issues from profiling's history and the theoretical schools of thought to its treatment in the mainstream media. The second edition includes new sections on the problems of induction, metacognition in criminal profiling and investigative relevance. Part two deals more specifically with a number of types of serial crime including stalking, rape, murder and arson. Chapters on each of these crimes provide definitions and thresholds, discussion of the offenders, the crime and its dynamics. Considerations for behavioral profiling and investigations and the development of new paradigms in each area are interwoven throughout. Topics are conceptually and practically related since profiling has typically seen most application in serial crimes and similar investigations.

The unique presentation of the book successfully connects the concepts and creates links to criminal behavior across crimes-murder, sexual assault, and arson-something no other title does. The connection of serial behavior to profiling, the most useful tool in discovering behavior patterns, is also new to the body of literature available and serves to examine the ideal manner in which profiling can be used in conjunction with behavioral science to positively affect criminal investigations.

* Provides a theoretical and practical foundation for understanding the motivation and dynamics in a range of serial offenses
* Illustrates the promise, purposes and pitfalls of behavioral profiling in the investigation of various serial crimes
* Numerous case examples show the real world uses of behavioral profiling in investigations, as well as highlighting a variety of issues in understanding and investigating serial crime

Product Description

Criminal Profiling: Principles and Practice provides a compendium of original scientific research on constructing a criminal profile for crimes that are not readily resolvable by conventional police investigative methods. Leading profiling expert Richard N. Kocsis, PhD, utilizes a distinct approach referred to as Crime Action Profiling (CAP), a technique that has its foundations in the disciplinary knowledge of forensic psychology.
The initial four chapters examine the skills, accuracy, components, and processes surrounding the construction of a criminal profile. The next two chapters focus on CAP research, the methods developed for the profiling of violent crimes and describing a systematic method for the interpretation and use of the CAP models. The subsequent three chapters canvass the respective CAP studies undertaken for crimes of serial rape, serial/sexual murder, and serial arson. An explanation for how each of the models is developed is also given. The final chapters of the book are devoted to the geographical analysis of crime patterns and to a discussion of the format conventions and procedural guidelines for developing a criminal profile.
Offering a scientifically grounded method for the construction of a criminal profile, Criminal Profiling: Principles and Practice provides law enforcement personnel, forensic psychologists and psychiatrists, criminologists, and forensic investigators with a step-by-step, practical guide for understanding and applying CAP techniques for the construction of a criminal profile in a systematic and replicable manner.

Product Description

From routine security checks at airports to the use of risk assessment in sentencing, actuarial methods are being used more than ever to determine whom law enforcement officials target and punish. And with the exception of racial profiling on our highways and streets, most people favor these methods because they believe they’re a more cost-effective way to fight crime.

In Against Prediction, Bernard E. Harcourt challenges this growing reliance on actuarial methods. These prediction tools, he demonstrates, may in fact increase the overall amount of crime in society, depending on the relative responsiveness of the profiled populations to heightened security. They may also aggravate the difficulties that minorities already have obtaining work, education, and a better quality of life—thus perpetuating the pattern of criminal behavior. Ultimately, Harcourt shows how the perceived success of actuarial methods has begun to distort our very conception of just punishment and to obscure alternate visions of social order. In place of the actuarial, he proposes instead a turn to randomization in punishment and policing. The presumption, Harcourt concludes, should be against prediction.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ivory tower rubbish
If you take Harcourt's ivory tower exercise and put it into practice, there would be chaos, more crime and violence. Actuarial methods have an 80 year history, are widely used in the United States, the British Commonwealth and the European Union in the prison and psychiatric hospital systems. Unfortunately since the author is an academic he rarely experiences the real life on the urban streets of his own city where there were 620 murders last year. It's another academic argument like his fellow U of C professor Becker's "rationally maximizing utility" that will fall by the wayside. A century from now, few will read let alone pay attention to this book.

Product Description
Most incidents of violent crime occur between people who know each other, but in other cases (fortunately much less frequent) there are no obvious ties between the victim and the criminal, and these cases cause a great deal of social fear and uncertainty. They also result in large-scale, costly investigations and, increasingly, police are collaborating with other professionals in a process of offender profiling which might help their investigation. This book is a substantial, unique and critical account of the scope and practice of offender profiling, and its limitations. Professionals worldwide, from psychiatry, psychology, criminology and policing, have contributed accounts of their experience and knowledge across a range of approaches to offender profiling. Some use a clinical approach, based on the application of established theories of personality and psychopathy. Others argue for the effectiveness of the objective analysis of offence records to predict future offending. Some of the police contributions provide a frank description of their methods, others address the difficult issues relating to the use of offender profiling. This is a controversial subject, full of potent myth, and the object of this book is to provide a cool overview of the related scientific knowledge, now spread over many journals and reports, as well as accounts of the process and difficulties of offender profiling. It will be useful and interesting to most scientists and professionals in the field of criminal justice. This book is in the Wiley Series in the Psychology of Crime, Policing and Law. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Correction
In response to the below comment to my book review - I did not have an "out of print" of older edition of the book.

Generally, the book presents an average overview of offender profiling. However, theEditors give credit to the FBI in several passages for the rape model, power assertive, anger retaliatory, etc, but it was in fact Prentky andKnight who first developed this type of rape classification scheme. Also, the book claims to represent researchers' opinions from all around theworld on 'profiling,' however, the fact is, there is not one Americanauthor in the book.

Product Description
Racial profiling and border security have become characteristic features of governance in Western liberal democracies during the twenty-first century. This new collection provides an important multi-national perspective on an issue of great and growing concern, particularly but not exclusively in the context of corporate globalization and neo-liberal governance. Despite the growing significance of regimes of racial profiling, surveillance and tightened border controls in the post-9/11 period, there have been very few extended analyses of racial profiling in different eras and contexts, particularly at borders. The work examines the issue from a transborder perspective, with comparisons, connections and intersections of policy and practice.Chapters examine a range of topics including racial profiling and implications for inter/national and human security, racial profiling along borders in the US and the construction of "terrorists" and "illegal aliens," racial profiling and problems of proof and movements opposing racial profiling, among others.Overall, the chapters in this collection reframe racial profiling as a human rights rather than civil rights issue, making an important contribution to analyses of this important topic.About the editor: Jeff Shantz teaches critical theory, elite deviance, community and human rights in the Department of Criminology at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Metro Vancouver, Canada. He is the author of the book Living Anarchy: Theory and Practice in Anarchist Movements. His writings have appeared in leading international journals including Critical Sociology, Critique of Anthropology, Feminist Review and New Politics as well as numerous anthologies.A longtime community organizer, he has been a member of the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty and host of the weekly "Anti-Poverty Report" on radio stations CHRY and CKLN in Toronto, Canada.Dr. Shantz received his Ph.D. from York University in Toronto. ... Product Description
'Criminals reveal who they are and where they live not just from how they commit their crimes, but also from the locations they choose.' So claims renowned criminal psychologist and profiler David Canter. Fully revised and updated, Canter's groundbreaking book leads the reader through the labyrinth psyches of serial killers, rapists and other violent criminals and takes us on the murderer's journey, in both the psychological and geographical sense. From contentious cases such as Jack the Ripper and Jill Dando, to the murders of Fred West, Canter lifts the lid on geographical profiling and how this new approach to solving crime is changing the way police work and our understanding of the criminal mind. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Boring
This was incredibly boring.I managed to get through Chapter 3 and stopped.I just couldn't digest any more. There are other far more interesting criminal books out there.

4-0 out of 5 stars informative, though somewhat uneven
In this offering David Canter, one of the leading theorists in geographic profiling and how environmental psychology relates to crime, offers a detailed look at how space and time relate to criminal activity.

As with his previous works, I was fascinated by his observations which, when you think about them all make remarkable sense. Yet just like most common sense, his work is anything but common. This book is much better than "Criminal Shadows." He has improved his writing, added more detail and description, and fleshed out some of the principle and practice of mapping crime. He also does an admirable job of avoiding the self-aggrandizing tone of so many of the true crime books written by profilers.

While I would recommend this book, I will mention that it seems unbalanced, as if someone else wrote some of the chapters. The tone, the writing style, even the content seem to shift back and forth leaving the reader confused on which voice, which part of the work, is really Dr. Canter's. All that said, anyone interested in the emerging field of geographic profiling will enjoy and benefit from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awe -Inspiring Insights for which Canter is renowned
Mapping Murder is a fascinating, inspiring read. Professor Canter is the world's foremost academic authority on psychological offender profiling so this was always going to be rather different from many other books in this area.

Mapping Murder is that rare phenomenon-a highly intellecutal read that deals with real life-here, horrific murder cases subjected to the sort of detailed professional psychological analysis that just hasn't been attempted before.

Canter does what he always does-tells you things that you know are right as soon as he says them, they just click.

Throughout the insights keep coming at a rapid pace. What you get from this book is limited only by your own mental faculties!!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Better Titles
I found Canter's book to be very useful. This is decidedly the best popular book currently available on the topic of geographic profiling and as such I highly recommend it for students of forensic psychology. The book provides enough research to keep the professional interested, yet it is written clearly so that the student can appreciate it as well. I found this book to be both good reading and a good review of the literature on this topic, and the latter is something almost always lacking in popular books on profiling. Highly recommended. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
I thought that book will have some more information about the code in Valgrind-core. So, any developer can use it as a developer guide.
Actually, the book is like user-guide that list the tools in valgrind and how to invoke them through command line.

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Resource for a Valuable Tool
Ordinarily I wince at the notion of a book dedicated to an open source tool. Usually online resources are abundant and a book only summarizes the information that is already freely available.

My thoughts are different for the Valgrind Develpment Team's manual for Valgrind 3.3. Admittedly, this is a very advanced tool for developers. Having used it myself I find the tool and the authors' in-depth explanation to the nuances and pitfalls of such advanced debugging invaluable.

The audience may be small for such a publication but if you do any development on Linux (and now Mac OS X and *BSD) then Valgrind should be part of your development and testing plan.

5-0 out of 5 stars The definitive guide to Valgrind
This book is a nice little reference to Valgrind. It covers pretty much the common stuff you'll use Valgrind for.It is the first book I've ever bought that is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License. The book is also available online, but since it's a pretty inexpensive book, I like having a dead tree version.Plus, I'm sure my money is going to some good cause. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A solid book
i enjoyed reading this book. It's not light reading, but the author is a clear expert in his field and I think this book is a welcomed addition to anyone's library.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Profiling
An interesting and informative book so far (I'm still reading this and another book on a similar subject).

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick test
This book basicly tells you to study a person and ask question about this person. This is another good starter book but not for someone that has any knowledge on the subject already. Its starts a weak profile on a person then stops.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I have started using this book for interviewing people and learning more about people and making general observations. The book is not an exciting read but the material if used properly will change the way you view the world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the wanna be profiler
Great if you want to learn how to read people, profile your friends and family. A perfect starting point ... Read more

Product Description
This ground-breaking text is the first to provide a detailed overview of Investigative Psychology, from the earliest work through to recent studies, including descriptions of previously unpublished internal reports. Crucially it provides a framework for students to explore this exciting terrain, combining Narrative Theory and an Action Systems framework. It includes empirically tested models for Offender Profiling and guidance for investigations, as well as an agenda for research in Investigative Psychology.

Investigative Psychology features:

  • The full range of crimes from fraud to terrorism, including burglary, serial killing, arson, rape, and organised crime
  • Important methodologies including multi-dimensional scaling and the Radex approach as well as Social Network Analysis
  • Geographical Offender Profiling, supported by detailed analysis of the underlying psychological processes that make this such a valuable investigative decision support tool
  • The full range of investigative activities, including effective information collection, detecting deception and the development of decision support systems.

In effect, this text introduces an exciting new paradigm for a wide range of psychological contributions to all forms of investigation within and outside of law enforcement. Each chapter has actual cases and quotations from offenders and ends with questions for discussion and research, making this a valuable text for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Applied and Forensic Psychology, Criminology, Socio-Legal Studies and related disciplines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Operationally Useful in Crime Analysis
As a PhD student and Law Enforcement Officer, I see great potential for this book to be useful to others in this field. For example, this gives the reader a great summary of years of research in Investigative Psychology and case studies which indicate the potential of this knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Text!
The text was very easy to read. Chapter two gave a brilliant exploration of the history and theory behind Investigative Psychology. Chapter five was difficult to grasp, but understandable due to the nature of facet theory. Otherwise, a great read all around!

3-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
in a book like this i am expecting DETAILED reveiw of the crimes with DETAIL on exactly every single act committed during the crime.there is only one really good scene in this entire book where a serial killer describes in detail how he felt attacking his victims. that was great. the problem was the whole book needs to be like that. i hate glossed over crap as this book in 90% of the content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
As someone who works with troubled teens, I can see characteristics to watch for those who may be more disturbed than I had thought. This book is very important for anyone who has the opportunity to identify one of these monsters before they can destroy people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frighteningly accurate portrayal of these monsters.
I was riveted and kept reading about the terrible people who are so primitive and savage. Reading about the 'Pairs' was very scary. When two people are egging one another on to do even more terrible things, the result is even more horror.
Dr. Kauflin is right on the mark with her book and I suspect that she will become a consultant to police departments all over the world with her expertise. Meanwhile, I will be waiting for her next book.
