Product Description
The only reference on current methods to generate pharmacokinetic and safety profiles of drug candidates, as well as how they must be balanced against one other for the best selection of candidates for further development.
Following a brief introduction to the necessities of filtering and risk assessment of potential new drug molecules before actual drug development, the two equally important aspects of pharmacological (ADME) and safety (toxicity) profiling are covered in separate parts.
The ADME section covers the profiling of basic physicochemical parameters, such as solubility and permeability, as well as more complex traits, such as the likelihood of drug-drug interactions, metabolic clearance and protein binding properties.
The toxicology part addresses, among others, recent advances in early genetic toxicity testing, bioactivation screening, organ-specific toxicity assays for liver, heart, kidney and blood, as well as profiling for autoimmune reactions.
By addressing both drug efficiency and drug safety, this modern practical reference shows readers how each individual aspect figures in shaping the key decisions on which the entire drug development process hinges. In short, this is a complete toolbox for assessing the risk/benefit ratio for any novel compound during the early drug development stages, using both in vitro and in silico methods.
Both editors are based at one of the leading research-driven pharmaceutical companies, and the authors have been recruited from numerous other global players in the field.
Invaluable know-how for every medicinal chemist and drug developer. ... Read more

Product Description
Referrals, suspensions, and expulsions of African American students, especially males, are at an all-time high. However, as this book shows, culturally determined assumptions and friction over communication have a role to play in this as well. This book is designed to make readers aware of how cultural factors relate to the ways that discipline is meted out. Administrators and teachers will gain an understanding of how culturally conditioned beliefs and assumptions negatively influence student-teacher relationships. Ultimately this book proposes a set of strategies in order to solve the problem of high frequency of disciplinary referrals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Help Bridge the Achievment Gap with Advise from Bireda
Although the population Bireda targets is young African American males (the affects of racial profiling in school discipline) her recommendations can be applied to almost any educational setting wishing to integrate multiculturalism into the entire school system. The author provides a sound basis for the problem of the over representation of African American and Latino students who are reprimanded and punished for inappropriate behavior in school settings. As a college instructor for a teacher preparatory program, I find Bireda's strategies (listed at the end of each chapter) especially helpful for anyone involved in teacher training on diversity awareness. The author not only lists ethical questions that all teachers would benefit by considering but also provides guidelines for action in order to make sure all children excell in school. I highly recommend this book for anyone who teaches and hope that there is a sequel. ... Read more

    Product Description
It was a time of innocence, a time of hippies, flower children and the Age of Aquarius. A time when young people felt free to roam about the countryside hitchhiking without fear.A time when law enforcement was trusted by the people they were sworn to protect and serve.
That time was shattered by one of law enforcements own. His name was Gerard Schaefer. He was a former Wilton Manors, Florida Police Officer who lied his way into the office of the Martin County Florida Sheriff’s Office. He used his lie to continue to perpetrate his crimes of torture and murder of young women who hitchhiked along Florida’s roads.
Gerard Schaefer shattered the lives of the families of these young girls and destroyed the faith of the public in law enforcement. He killed without pity. He tortured without conscience and he hid the crimes without thought.
Schaefer not only destroyed the lives of as many as 34 young women, he kept trophies of his kills, and he lived the crimes over and over again. He believed he was doing the world and his victims a justice by ridding the world of the “whores” who hitchhiked. Gerard Schaefer was a narcissistic psychopath who wanted his fifteen minutes of fame. He believed he had earned it.
Florida Author, Yvonne Mason, in her newest release Silent Scream, has captured not only the essence of evil in Gerard Schaefer, she has also captured his brilliance. But more than that Ms. Mason has finally given a voice to the Silent Screams of Gerard Schaefer’s victims, the known and the unknown.
Ms. Mason who has a degree in Criminal Justice and was a Bounty Hunter in Georgia before moving to Florida has given a voice to such victims as Georgia Jessup and Susan Place, the two who were discovered on South Hutchinson Island, April 1, 1973 seven months after they disappeared on Sept 23, 1972 in a shallow grave in pieces. She has also given a voice to Collette Goodenough and Barbara Ann Willcox who were killed in Jan 1973 and whose bones found four years later at C-24 Canal.
Ms. Mason has captured the not only the pain, the agony and the suffering Gerard Schaefer’s victims went through, she has captured the pain, the anger and the hurt which law enforcement suffered at the hands of this killer.
Even after thirty four years the ones who were in law enforcement at that time still haven’t forgotten. They still carry the emotional scars of the heinous tortures and murders of Gerard Schaefer on the innocent.
Retired FBI Roy Hazelwood writes after reading Ms. Mason’s book: "Yvonne Mason has captured the true essence of Gerard Schaefer, a deputy sheriff who enjoyed torturing and killing young women. It is a gripping story and you should prepare to be disturbed.I guarantee that you will find it difficult to put this book down."
Retired Oakland Park PD Detective Chuck Hemp who worked the disappearance of Jessup and Place wrote this after reading Silent Scream: “When Gerald Schaefer used his badge and gun to terrorize and kill rather than protect and serve he crossed a line that not only snuffed out the lives of his victims but also affected the lives of their loved ones and the police officers charged with investigating these crimes. In her book “Silent Screams” Yvonne Mason has captured more than just the story, but has also given voices to all of Schaefer’s unknown victims. I’m sure there are many.”
Ms. Mason stated this “The victims no longer scream silently, they now have a voice and with that voice comes peace.”
Silent Scream is a voice for the victims. It is their way of never being forgotten and of also reminding each of us that at any time or any place we also can become a victim.

    Great reading!!!!Thank you Yvone Mason..

5-0 out of 5 stars The Horrifying Mind of a Killer
Silent Scream by Yvonne Mason is a must read which skillfully chronicles the unmerciful ploys of serial killer Gerald Schaefer. He was deceptive, manipulative, vicious, and inhuman. He preyed on the innocent women who trusted him. These stories are told in their full and heartbreaking detail. Their voices are heard through the voice of Yvonne who used her incredible insight and skill to write this book. Their killer will never terrorize another soul. I believe it took great courage, empathy, and strength to write a book of this magnitude. Yvonne also talks about the people who assisted her in her research and includes their profiles in her book. I deeply respect her for her work and for adding her own personal thoughts at the end. Yvonne's book is a labor of love and of justice for these girls who endured horrific and indescribeable torment. May it help to give them peace.

5-0 out of 5 stars An "In Depth" Look Inside The Mind Of A Deviant Serial Killer
I literally read this book from start to finish without taking a break. It's apparent that the author, Yvonne Mason, did an extensive amount of research to create this literary masterpiece. In this day and age our crime investigators have such resources as 'DNA' 'Behavioral Science' and 'Profiling' to help assist in their investigations... not so in 1973. Through this brilliant literary piece the author takes the reader back in time, to 1973, and gives the reader an 'in depth' look inside the mind of a prolific serial killer known as 'Gerard John Schaefer.' The reader must be warned, much of the material is disturbing and graphic in nature. However, I'm a firm believer that the repetition of violence causes we as a society to become desensitized, callous towards victims of such tragedies. In writing 'Silent Scream' the author introduces the innocent victims one by one, revealing each of their personalities, giving them a voice to be heard.

Through transcripts and letters the author takes you into the courtroom so you can experience the trial of this notorious killer, giving great detail to specifics that at last lead up to his conviction. For me, reading 'Silent Scream' was an eye opening experience. It reminded me how vulnerable we truly are, especially our young children. The suffering, humiliation, and torture that these innocent victims endured before their tragic death is incomprehensible. Yvonne Mason brings their story to light, and through her words she speaks for those lives that have been silenced...

"Silent Scream" is an impeccable work of literature, expressed with sensitivity, written by one talented writer, 'Yvonne Mason.'

5-0 out of 5 stars Horrifying and Compelling - One Incredible Read!
Silent Scream takes you from the beginning to the end of serial killer Gerard Schaefer's horrendous killing spree and then through the myriad of complexities in the criminal justice system.I was literally glued to this book! This book is disturbing, but I still found that I couldn't put it down. But what's even more disturbing is that the serial killer was a police officer who used his badge and gun to terrorize, torture, and kill young women in Florida between 1966-1972.

Books that involve serial crime, either fiction or nonfiction, fascinate me.Yvonne Mason has expertly crafted this true crime story to unfold with a continued escalating pace.A real page-turner!She has captured the evil soul of Gerard Schaefer and has also given a voice to the many victims. The extensive research conducted for this book is absolutely top notch.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys true crime or crime fiction genres.I'm anxious to read more books by this author in the future.

2-0 out of 5 stars Big, bulky and wanting an editor........

This is instructive, but not suitable for an educational environment.

It is lengthy, but not worthy of its girth and weight.

This text examines the numbers, the advocacy arguments and the practical realities of the "racial profiling" controversy. By applying law, logic, electoral common sense and police community relations, the author shows how the successful police manager will deal with the issues without enduring personal or career disaster for the attempt. The first part of the text explains the "racial profiling" controversy in the context of traffic stops. The political and policy issues are covered along with the constitutional standards. Then, the second part addresses the types of actions sought by those who assert a need for remedies against police investigatory stops. The third aspect of this text is an analysis of the mechanism by which challengers force elected officials into the defensive settlements seen in 1998-2001. Next, the roles of elected officials, police managers and police unions in dealing with this controversy is discussed. Finally, preventive steps are suggested that can practically be implemented to avoid this controversy from affecting successful police administration. By taking apart the complex topic and showing its meaning, significance and consequential events, it is hoped that this book will help facilitate solutions where currently there is confusion and alarm. ... By any measure of test scores and graduation rates, public schools are failing to educate a large percentage of Chicana/o youth. But despite years of analysis of this failure, no consensus has been reached as to how to realistically address it. Taking a new approach to these issues, Marcos Pizarro goes directly to Chicana/o students in both urban and rural school districts to ask what their school experiences are really like, how teachers and administrators support or thwart their educational aspirations, and how schools could better serve their Chicana/o students. In this accessible, from-the-trenches account of the Chicana/o school experience, Marcos Pizarro makes the case that racial identity formation is the crucial variable in Chicana/o students' success or failure in school. He draws on the insights of students in East Los Angeles and rural Washington State, as well as years of research and activism in public education, to demonstrate that Chicana/o students face the daunting challenge of forming a positive sense of racial identity within an educational system that unintentionally yet consistently holds them to low standards because of their race. From his analysis of this systemic problem, he develops a model for understanding the process of racialization and for empowering Chicana/o students to succeed in school that can be used by teachers, school administrators, parents, community members, and students themselves. ... Product Description
When DNA profiling was first introduced into the American legal system in 1987, it was heralded as a technology that would revolutionize law enforcement. As an investigative tool, it has lived up to much of this hype--it is regularly used to track down unknown criminals, put murderers and rapists behind bars, and exonerate the innocent.

Yet, this promise took ten turbulent years to be fulfilled. In Genetic Witness, Jay D. Aronson uncovers the dramatic early history of DNA profiling that has been obscured by the technique's recent success. He demonstrates that robust quality control and quality assurance measures were initially nonexistent, interpretation of test results was based more on assumption than empirical evidence, and the technique was susceptible to error at every stage. Most of these issues came to light only through defense challenges to what prosecutors claimed to be an infallible technology.Although this process was fraught with controversy, inefficiency, and personal antagonism, the quality of DNA evidence improved dramatically as a result. Aronson argues, however, that the dream of a perfect identification technology remains unrealized. ... Read more

This book sheds light on the social production of science and the courts.A compelling read for anyone interested in the process through which new forms of testing and the consequences of DNA test results moved from the lab to the courtroom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Genetic Witness - Reviewed
"Genetic Witness" by Jay D. Aronson is the history of the introduction, implementation, fortes and foibles of using DNA in Criminal cases on the National level in America.

The book, "Justice and Science" by George "Woody" Clarke does the same thing from the view point of local and state levels based in criminal cases in San Diego, CA.

"Genetic Witnesses" does an excellent job in documenting the historic challenge of standardizing DNA markers to be an outstanding tool in the criminal justice system.

This book covers most areas of concern regarding the use of DNA on the National level without getting bogged down in ad nausea or being difficult to read. The author takes the time to explain when needed and provides copious notes and a detailed index.

One of the things that I really like about this book is the warning regarding the human factor in technology. We often push people to get the job done in the quickest and most cost effective manner. Management always acts in horror when their stress in this area pushes people to cheat to get results. "Give the boss what he wants" attitude regardless of the errors or contrary evidence, unrealistic deadlines and job loads, outdated equipment, poor training and underfunding all contribute to an impact on DNA errors and documentation.

Not only the public has been impacted by the "CSI effect", J. D. Aronson extends, without specifically mentioning, this to the Judges, District Attorneys, Investigators and Lab Managers that the human factor will contribute unrealistic expectations and error rates from DNA evidence. The efforts to limit this are the next challenge in the DNA saga.

"Genetic Witness" is a historic book that is excellent at documenting the early rise of DNA, the challenges, acceptance and warning to the DNA use in the Criminal Courts in America.

This book is a must read for those learning about DNA, criminal justice and criminology.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone interested in DNA evidence
Genetic Witness, covering forensic DNA science, technology and law is an extremely well researched and factual book, yet almost reads like a true crime novel. Aronson, an expert in his field, as well as an Assistant Professor at Carnegie Mellon University, has written this book is such a way that it appeals to a variety of audiences including: students, anyone fascinated by true crime or television shows such as CSI, or those in need of valid and reliable information about how DNA has been used in the legal system over the past 20 years. I highly recommend 'Genetic Witness' by Jay D. Aronson. ... Read more

They also show the effects, the ephemera, the clues and cues, welcome and unwelcome, out of which Shakespeare's admirers and dedicated scholars have pieced together a vision of the playwright, whether as sage, psychologist, lover, theatrical entrepreneur, or moral authority. This collection brings together classic pieces, hard-to-find chapters, and two new essays. Here, Garber has produced a book at once serious and highly readable, ranging broadly across time periods (early modern to postmodern) and touching upon both high and popular culture.

Contents: Preface  1. Shakespeare's Ghost Writers  2. Hamlet: Giving Up the Ghost  3. Macbeth: The Male Medusa  4. Shakespeare as Fetish  5. Character Assassination  6. Out of Joint  7. Roman Numerals  8. Second-Best Bed  9. Shakespeare's Dogs  10. Shakespeare's Laundry List  11. Shakespeare's Faces  12. MacGuffin Shakespeare  13. Fatal Cleopatra  14. 5-0 out of 5 stars An honest picture
This is a brilliant treatment of our beloved Bard! Dr. Garber deconstructs his life, what may have informed his writing, his possible motives, as well as turning an interesting focus on our personal investments (our fetishes, she calls them) toward his works. Honest and respectful without the typical sappy reverence to his genius. Scholarly but friendly read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Behavior, Truth and Deception
Michael Napier's Behavior Truth and Deception, exceptionally integrates scholarly research and theory, as well as serves as an excellent field guide for a practitioner. All concepts are illustrated by powerful case studies which provide the reader with the opportunity to closely examine the concepts and understand human behavior within the interview process. The author's insight and experience is evident throughout the book.Chapter 4 offers a discussion on setting the stage for success; in particular it examines interviewer traits, I found this topic very helpful and relevant for all law enforcement personnel. As a law enforcement professional, as well as a college professor, I strongly recommend this textbook as an excellent guide for both practitioners and for those in world of academia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
Behavior, Truth and Deception is an outstanding resource for the law enforcement investigator who wishes to improve his/her interviewing and interrogation skills. The book contains previously unpublished concepts on detecting deception, interviewing strategies and interrogation techniques which are based upon the author's extensive field experience as an FBI agent/polygraph examiner and have been tested and refined through trial and error. I am a working police detective and have read many books on the topic of interviewing and interrogation. Some have been a waste of money while others genuinely expanded my understanding of I&I techniques. This book is well worth the money and the time you will spend reading it. If you learn and apply the techniques described in this book, you will most certainly improve your ability to detect deception and obtain confessions. If you are truly serious about improving your I&I skills, the information in this book will be worth its weight in gold. ... Read more
