Product Description
A practical handbook for people who want to be safe and do something.

Racial profiling does happen. And while cases where victims find themselves looking down the barrel of a policeman's gun make the six o'clock news, dozens of less extreme, yet troubling, examples occur every day.Cabs that whiz by only to be seen stopping for "safer"-looking people just up the block; being asked for multiple pieces of identification when making purchases with credit cards; being followed around a department store by salespeople and security while never being asked if they need any assistance; being detained for hours and extensively searched in an airport or train station--Driving While Black clearly defines the system officially known as CARD (class, age, race, dress) and offers advice about how to handle potentially life-threatening situations with the police, as well as recourse for readers who suspect their civil rights have been denied due to racial profiling.

A book written to save lives, Driving While Black is not just for people of color, but for anyone who likes to wear a baseball cap, baggy jeans, sneakers, and a tee shirt and finds they are often treated like a "suspect."

After the advent of data mining and its successful application on conventional data, Web-related information has been an appropriate and increasingly popular target of knowledge discovery. Depending on whether the data used in the knowledge discovery process concerns the Web itself in terms of content or the usage of the content, one distinguishes between Web content mining and Web usage mining. This book is the first one entirely devoted to Web usage mining. It originates from the WEBKDD'99 Workshop held during the 1999 KDD Conference. The ten revised full papers presented together with an introductory survey by the volume editors documents the state of the art in this exciting new area. Product Description
~

In October 2002, the Toronto Star ran a series of feature articles on racial profiling in which it was indicated that Toronto police routinely target young Black men when making traffic stops. The articles drew strong reactions from the community, and considerable protest from the media, politicians, law enforcement officials, and other public authorities. Although the articles were supported by substantial documentation and statistical evidence, the Toronto Police Association sued the Star, claiming that no such evidence existed. The lawsuit was ultimately rejected in court. As a result, however, the issue of racial profiling – a practice in which certain criminal activities are attributed to individuals or groups on the basis of race or ethno-racial background – was thrust into the national spotlight.

In this comprehensive and thought-provoking work, Carol Tator and Frances Henry explore the meaning of racial profiling in Canada as it is practised not only by the police but also by many other social institutions. The authors provide a theoretical framework within which they examine racial profiling from a number of perspectives and in a variety of situations. They analyse the discourses of the media, policing officials, politicians, civil servants, judges, and other public authorities to demonstrate how those in power communicate and produce existing racialized ideologies and social relations of inequality through their common interactions. Chapter 3, by contributing author Charles Smith, provides a comparison of experiences of racial profiling and policing in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Chapter 7, by Maureen Brown, through a series of interviews, presents stories that demonstrate the realities of racial profiling in the everyday experiences of Afro-Canadians and ethno-racial minorities.

Informed by a wealth of research and theoretical approaches from a wide range of disciplines, Racial Profiling in Canada makes a major contribution to the literature and debates on a topic of growing concern. Together the authors present a compelling examination of the pervasiveness of racial profiling in daily life and its impact on our society, while suggesting directions for change.

Product Description
Biochemical Profiling in the Dog and Cat has beendeveloped to aid veterinary practitioners and students in theirsystemic evaluation of clinical laboratory data. This book isdesigned to be used in conjunction with Hemogram Interpretation forDogs and Cats. The text has been organized into four parts for easyuse.Part I (chapters 1-4) covers basic information on biochemicalprofiling as well as interpretation of the hemogram, urinalysis, andacid-base balance. Many of the tests used to evaluate acid-basebalance are part of most large biochemical profiles; however, becauseacid-base disturbances are non-specific and can occur in diseases ofmany organ systems, acid-base balance is considered along withhemogram and urinalysis data.In Part II (chapters 5-9), each majororgan system is discussed independently and a specific test panel isoutlined for each. The specific panel represents a subset of thestandard large chemistry profile and consists of those tests whichshould be evaluated first and as a unit whenever involvement of thegiven organ is suspected on the basis of history, clinical signs, andphysical examination. The rationale for the use and interpretation ofeach test in the organ system panel is briefly outlined and a seriesof cases that illustrate the principles of interpretation for eachorgan system is then provided.(In some instances, the data have beenmodified for teaching purposes.)Part III (chapter 10) consists of aseries of case studies presented as "unknowns."The reader isencouraged to apply the principles outlined in Parts I and II tointerpret the data presented. For each case, the authors'interpretations are included.Part IV includes important referencematerial. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Egyptian Authors and Reform
This translation is very informative.Like many other books written by Egyptian authors, Kallaf's take on Islamic legal theory is very reformist in nature. However, the principles described by the author as being essential elements of Islamic lega theory remain "theoritical".

The book is actually a translation of speeches made by the late professor of Islamic law. Being such, it is very ingaging and lively. The english translation did not change that aspect of the work, therefore the reader will feel compelled to finish the work once he or she starts it, and that is not a big task: the book is less than 130 pages that can be read in one sitting!

Familiarity with Arabic terms might help but it is not necessary to follow through.

Great read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very technical, but very informative
The translated lectures are very informative. It is a great read for those interested in Islamic law, islamic government, and islamic civilization in general. The chosen title is well suited for the content.

The only criticism i have for this work is the use of the Arabic technical word, it could be a stopper for the flow of reading, but i must admit that once I finished the book, those words were already part of my vocabulary.

The content reflects a traditional yet learnt presentation of how Muslims see the evolution of their legal and governmental systems throughout history, with some mild criticism to those traditionalists who oppose any innovation.I recommend it for any serious reader intersted in Islam in general. ... Product Description
In recent years, racial profiling has drawn the attention of state and federal governments. In this book, racial profiling is defined as the practice of targeting individuals for police or security interdiction, detention, or other disparate treatment based primarily on their race, ethnicity, or national origin in the belief that certain minority groups are more likely to engage in unlawful behaviour. Assertions that law enforcement personnel at all levels unfairly target certain racial and ethnic groups, particularly but not exclusively for traffic stops and searches, have raised concerns about violations of the Constitution. The major debate on racial profiling centres on whether the practice should be prohibited entirely and whether data on traffic stops and searches should be collected to determine if the practice is occurring. This book presents the major issues, gathers available data, and analyses important to understanding on the most dangerous and divisive practices of our time. ... Read more

Product Description
The primary objective of the project was to characterize raw water, treatment plant, distribution, and household tap water quality with respect to microbes, water quality indictors, and physicochemical parameters in Davenport, Iowa. The goal was to provide a context for interpreting the public health data generated by the epidemiology study. In response to the 1996 amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act requirements, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) formulated a series of epidemiology studies to determine the occurrence of waterborne disease in the United States. The Iowa-American Water Company, Davenport district, was selected because it best satisfied all of the study criteria. Detailed analyses were conducted on raw, treated plant effluent, distribution system, and household tap and treatment device water samples.Analyses included Cryptosporidium oocysts by both USEPA Method 1623 and infectious organisms by the cell culture/polymerase chain reaction method (CC-PCR), Giardia cysts by Method 1623, culturable viruses, total and fecal coliforms, Clostridium perfringens spores, Bacillus subtilis spores, male-specific and somatic bacteriophage, and HPC bacteria. Monitoring of the treatment plant included a large number of process variables as well as microbial indicators. Data on distribution system leaks, electronic pressure monitoring for hydraulic surges, and hydraulic modeling helped to supplement the monitoring program. The extensive monitoring of the Davenport system failed to find significant indicators of microbial risk. The drinking water in the Davenport system met or surpassed all measures of water quality. The study did identify areas for future research, including the relationship between the occurrence of male-specific coliphage and distribution system main breaks, the potential for negative pressure transients due to power outages, and the need for more comprehensive distribution system pressure monitoring. The findings of the separately funded epidemiology study will have a tremendous impact on the perception and regulation of drinking water. This study demonstrated that the water supply studied met or surpassed all measures of water quality. The outcome of the epidemiology study (whether waterborne disease is observed or not) will either support current standards of drinking water quality, or radically change the approach to ensuring potable water. ...
