Product Description
With increasing frequency, PROLOG is the language of choice for many applications in artificial intelligence. This popularity of PROLOG, coupled with the importance of artificial intelligence applications, underscores the need for an integrative text and reference in this area. The motivation behind this book is to present for the first time a cohesive text for artificial intelligence and software development using PROLOG as the language. The essentials of the concepts, artificial intelligence, logic programming and software engineering are presented here in one coherent book. One of the distinguishing features of the book will be its unified treatment of computation and software designs, and as such, will appeal to users of computation, mainly engineers and physical scientists, as well as computer scientists. These courses are offered frequently in the artificial intelligence area of computer science, in the knowledge and software engineering area for students in engineering and the physical sciences. ... The Transparent Prolog Machine (TPM) was one of the most successful products of the UK's Alvey programme. Developed at the Open University, UK, in collaboration with Expert Systems International, TPM is a new approach to debugging Prolog programs and to teaching the Prolog language. This book will be of particular value to Prolog programmers in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Scientists in AI, human-computer interaction and graphics researchers and practitioners. The style of graphical presentation developed within TPM (AORTA diagrams) is now used not only in TPM software but also in Open University teaching materials for Prolog; it is widely accepted as the best graphical visualization of Prolog execution. The book presents both the theory behind the TPM graphical debugger and a detailed account of its operation, including worked examples, code abstractions, and a tutorial. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great algorithm-based book on the subject
This book has the same scope as Speech and Language Processing (2nd Edition) (Prentice Hall Series in Artificial Intelligence), but that book flies too high over the details. This book does a good job of covering the details without getting lost in them. The author takes the approach of explaining a concept first with excellent illustrations, then explains the algorithm that implements the concept, then shows detailed code in either Prolog or PERL.

This is not to say you can pick up this book without the proper background and get much out of it. Language processing is a field requiring a good background in a number of fields including the theory of computation, linguistics, artificial intelligence, and information theory to name a few. You should be familiar with all of these fields before tackling the book, although the author does introduce these topics somewhat before digging into details.

One thing the author does not do much of is explain Prolog or PERL. He assumes you already know these languages, although there is an appendix at the back of the book covering Prolog. Prolog is a difficult language to learn and is not at all intuitive. However, it is an excellent choice for coding up many algorithms concerning artificial intelligence. Thus, although I do not argue with the author's choice of language, I do recommend that you become fluent in Prolog before you read this book.

I used to recommend Jurafsky and Martin for people starting out learning language processing, but now I think I can recommend this book for not only the big picture but the details of this interesting field as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is going to be a classic !!
This is a wonderful, code rich, book on language processing for computational linguists and language engineers. It is both theory and example rich with considerable detail throughout. The book is clearly written and very well structured!!

Highly recommended! ... Read more

Product Description
Logic and Programming in Logci gives a fresh look to both Logic and Logic Programming in Prolog. It offers a novel approach for those learning or teaching either Logic or Logic Programming. The chief innovation lies in the melding of both topics: not only does the discussion of provide a good underpinning for the intending Prolog programmer, but the treatment of Prolog also enables the logician to put theory into practice in Prolog and make the subject come alive.
The book presumes no prior knowledge of either Prolog, Logic or Logic Programming and takes a very practical approach. It is written in an unusually easy?to?read and accessible style. Containing over 100 exercises and their solutions, Logic and Programming in Logic may be used either as a textbook or for self study and is ideally suited to those wishing to get a solid grasp of the exciting world of Logic and Logic Programming. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
This monograph presents a novel execution model for the parallel execution of standard sequential Prolog. In this execution model Prolog procedure calls can be efficiently pipelined, and the author shows how even fully deterministic Prolog programs can be effectively mapped onto the proposed architecture. The design is based on a highly optimized abstract Prolog specific instruction set. A special feature of this work is a sophisticated classification scheme for Prolog variables which substantially reduces the overhead for unification with occur-check. To support the model an architecture consisting of a circular pipeline of independent processors has been designed. This pipeline has been designed to work as a co-processor to a UNIX based workstation. In contrast to other attempts to execute sequential Prolog in parallel, the proposed model does not restrict the use of any of the standard Prolog language features. The book gives a full account of the execution model, the system architecture, and the abstract Prolog instruction set. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source for 4GL Development
This is an excellent reference for anyone who is involved with Informix 4GL development. The book provides all the basics of SQL and 4GL. I often use it from time to time for my development projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is An Excellent Starting Point for New Users
This book is an excellent resource for a novice user of Informix.I give this one 2 thumbs up.Even my expert coworker peeks into it once in a great while.

My work place has the Informix books offered by the vendorwhich can be highly wordy and, for me, unreadable. Also, the book by PaulMahler, "An Informix 4GL Tutorial" is pure crap.Or maybe thetitle should have been, "Mahler's Only Way To Do Informix--AnUnapproachable approach".

I have used both the first and 2ndeditions written by Cathy Kipp. The first edition used asmaller font, was easy to read and was more compact and, after using it as a beginnerInformix programmer, I grew attached to it.When I started using the 2ndedition, it took me a while to get used to the larger font or the morespread out documentation. In other words, a command could be covered in asingle page on the first edition making it easy to read, but it took 2pages to cover the same command in the 2nd edition. However, the 2ndedition had more substance over all.

Warning to the buyer! The bookspage numbers in the index and the actual pages those references are locatedcan be a couple pages off.AFter the index was written, a few more lineswere added throughout the book. This screws with your ability to find anindexed item in the book. For example, the index says: Isolation Levelsp.446 but the actual page is p.448,9.Although, the plus side is the indexis very thorough and make finding needed commands easily (within a page or2).

Drawback #2, as with most large paperbacks that are used on a dailybasis, the book will start falling apart--pages unglueing out of the binderafter a few months to a year.

But again, it has definitely been anexcellent resource.I almost would give this one 4 stars except, comparedto the couple other resources I have seen, this one beats all the rest.Even if it has its couple of flaws.

If you have any questions, I will bemore than happy to respond. ... Read more
