5-0 out of 5 stars Men should read this
Concerned about an enlarging prostate, I read about Doctor Lee Nelson MD and his book in our local Sunday newspaper, and was determined to get a copy to read. The book was not available in Australia, so I looked to Amazon.com to source a copy.
I was most impressed with Nelson'streatise on what has become a major problem for many men as they age, and in many cases, take little interest in their personal health until their prostate problems have reached an advanced state. He divides the subject into 3 main parts - What is Prostate Cancer; Treatments;and New & Future Developments. Each section is dealt with in easy-to-follow language, even though technical descriptions are used.
I felt quite comfortable reading the material, taking notes so that if and when I need to consult a specialist, I have an informed view of what questions I need to ask and a clearer picture of the terms likely to be used in the consultation process. The 'Treatment' section in particular was most informative and valuable.
Included is a balanced discussion of complimentary herbal remedies for those who may wish to go down that path.
No particular treatment was pushed - rather one is left to draw one's own conclusions, and to balance them in conjunction with any professional advice.
In conclusion, a book well worth buying, particularly those sold atsecond hand prices. I purchased extra copies to give to my friends, and to my local GP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent summary of the available medical literature
Motivated in part by his own experience with Prostate Cancer, Dr. Lee Nelson set out to find the best studies on the disease in order to see if there were lifestyle or nutritional changes he could make that could help prevent or cure the disease.

The first part of the book explains the disease and the many treatments that are available. For a newly diagnosed patient, this is invaluable in helping to make a good choice from what may be a confusing array of treatment choices.Dr. Nelson names the studies involved, so the reader can do further research if they wish, but many readers will be satisfied with the summaries of the outcomes that he provides.

Much of the second half of the book looks at nutrition and antioxidants and their role in either prevention, cause or help in treatment. What I appreciate most about Dr. Nelson's approach is that it is not agenda driven - he has no particular ax to grind in terms of what he thinks you "should" or "shouldn't" eat - he simply looks at the studies that have been done, and gives his opinion. He also tells what he himself eats, and what foods supplements he uses - and those he avoids. In Appendix III he then lists the foods associated with the nutrients, since he believes it's better to get your nutrients from foods wherever possible. Some of these results might surprise you.If you don't read the book I'll give the three-second summary of what I took away from the book.Eat soy, drink green tea (a lot), eat tomato products (a lot) and eat artichokes.Avoid milk (especially skim) and calcium supplements and get a little sun. These don't even begin to cover all the valuable information in the book however.

I highly recommend this book, and believe many people would find it valuable for the nutritional information alone, even if they don't have Prostate Cancer but wish to prevent it - and for those who have the disease, it's another source of unbiased information from a survior who is an M.D., to help you in your fight against the disease. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading on information on prostate conditions
This is probably the best source of information out there on prostate cancer and treatment.Dr Scardino is a very good writer and presents the material in a very easy to read format. Recommend this book for everyone seeking factual information on the topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr Scardino's Prostate Handbook
For someone facing Prostate Cancer, this has to be the book. His new release scheduled for later in 2010 should be even better.Dr Patrick Walsh's book (2007) is a little old and very biased towards Surgery and against other valid forms of treatment.

1-0 out of 5 stars NEVER RECEIVED THIS ITEM
I never received this item and I also never received any communication from the seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Peter Scardino's Prostate Book
I was understandably upset, frightened and confused when I received my diagnosis (the MD did not give it to me, it, perhaps accidentally, came in a unexpected phone call.)

When a co-worker of my nurse-wife talked to me,he recommended this as a book that helped him better understand his own diagnosis some years earlier

I found it invaluable in trying to understand my diagnosis. It is straight forward, easy to read, full of technical/medical information but stated in such a way (with great diagrams) the lay person can easily grasp it.

Dr. Peter doesn't have an axe to grind as to which road to take, he carefully explains all the options and encourages the reader to do as much investigation as he can before making any decisions.

It is great to have an expert surgeon discuss all aspects of Prostate Cancer and then leave the choices up to the patient.

While this is just one of more than 4 books I have read, I believe it is the best, most thorough volumn of them all and I highly recommend it to anyone diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and their significant other as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading
For those who suffer from chronic prostatitis, and those who treat those sufferers, this booklet is essential reading. Much of the information therein goes beyond the limited mainstream methods often practiced by urologists today, and provides means for a cure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dallas, Texas
This book saved me. It is basically against everything the
surgeon-urologists say, who basically love surgery and
don't care about patients. Great book. It is the one
to read and I read several. You can suffer in pain or you
can get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Got Cured Thanks To This Book
I am very grateful for this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Total and Complete
This is a "vanity press", self-published pile of junk! Go to Google and enter "prostatitis and chronic pelvic pain" and look at the sites you get. They completely discount the theories the author Hennenfent (who no longer practises as a doctor - check the AMA listings) is pushing. What makes this so much worse is that the author seems to have some sort of relationship with the two or three clinics in the world which profit from applying the unusual treatments he recommends. Buyer beware!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money!
The book offers nothing new. It was written by a nonurologist who is stuck in the past. Curtis Nickel's book is a better buy, IMO. ... Read more

Product Description
Prostate cancer is one of the commonest cancers in men in the western world, and the prevalence is rising currently due to improvements in screening and treatment. Serum PSA represents a useful marker of disease. It has frequently a long natural history, creating the opportunities for multiple sequential therapeutic interventions. For patients with high risk local disease or with metastases, endocrine therapy is central to management. Hormone ablation has long been the mainstay of endocrine therapy in this group of patients, though anti-androgens, oestrogens, and corticosteroids can also cause remissions. In recent years effective and well-tolerated chemotherapy regimens have been developed and evaluated. Docetaxel has an established role, and a range of biologically-targeted agents are in development.

The dominant pattern of metastatic spread is to the axial skeleton and most symptomatic care is directed to palliation of bone pain. The role of bisphosphonates remains controversial, but bone-directed isotopes such as Strontium-89 are effective.

Part of the Oxford Oncology Library, this pocketbook summarizes the up-to-date information on the use of systemic therapies in the management of prostate cancer (early stage, metastatic disease, and treatment of "biochemical" recurrence). With contributions from leading oncologists from both Europe and the USA, the book provides a practical guide to the range of endocrine and cytotoxic therapies currently available to clinicians, as well as to other palliative anticancer strategies, and will be valuable to all health professionals involved in the management of patients with prostate cancer. ... Product Description
The impact of advances in medical technologies is beginning to reveal that Prostate Cancer is a much larger problem than the general public perceives. Newer tools for diagnosing tiny microscopic cancer cells in younger men have caused the medical community to recommend that men in their early 40's get a PSA Cancer screen with routine physical exams, instead of waiting until they are in their late 50's, only then to discover cancer is present. The medical community is not doing a good job of communicating that we may be heading for a pandemic if diagnosis and treatment is not routinely conducted in younger and younger men.The Prostate Cancer Primer is the culmination of a research professor's intense effort to:*learn about current options that are available for preventing cancer;*suggestions for understanding what currently available treatment options their are, complete with side-effects;*how to choose which treatment is right for today's health-conscious adult man and his family.Oncologists and urologists interviewed for this Primer are in basic agreement that too little communication exists between the medical community and men who need to know what their prostate options are. This compilation of research is aimed at filling that void, for all men who are interested in living a healthful life. ... Read more

Product Description
A fascinating medical detective story about the unusual reception for a promising new drug by a skeptical medical community reluctant to abandon its age-old Hippocratic Oath of Do No Harm. Stewart Justman explains how a pill called finasteride, proven to dramatically reduce the incidence of prostate cancer, was found to be also associated with a distinctly higher rate of aggressive cancer. As urologists and oncologists were presented with a strange mix of eurekas and cautionary notes, physicians adhered to their best principles and remained wary of massive application. For now, the drug is deemed too risky: the medical dictum of avoiding harm has inhibited its use on a grand scale, though statistically there is much in its favor. Do No Harm is engrossing reading about medical science and, finally, a reassuring tale of the triumph of tradition over novelty. ... Read more

Product Description
Following in the footsteps of his #1 bestseller, The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet Dr. Bob Arnot returns with a nutrition plan to arm men against prostate cancer, the number one cancer among men. The silence that once shrouded prostate cancer has been broken, and millions of men and their families are now aware of how common this deadly disease is and how unpleasant the consequences of treatment can be. Now, Dr. Bob Arnot presents a new, nutritionally based plan for heading off prostate cancer before it strikes or has a chance to do serious harm. Based on the latest cutting-edge research, The Prostate Cancer Protection Plan is customized for men with a normal PSA (the standard screening test), men with a rising PSA, and men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Once again Dr. Bob leads the crusade to empower people with the information that can protect their health and save their lives. As chief medical correspondent at NBC, Arnot is one of the most famous and trusted names in medical information. He appears regularly on Today and Dateline. The Breast Cancer Prevention Diet continues to be affirmed by the latest medical research.Amazon.com Review
Prostate cancer killed more than 37,000 men in the U.S. in1999, and it gets ahold of men early and often. According to autopsyreports, about 25 percent of men in their 30s have latent prostatetumors, as do more than half of men in their 60s.

However, saysNBC News Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Bob Arnot, research isbeginning to show that this is a cancer that can be prevented or evenreversed by dietary changes. The first key, he writes, is soy. Americaproduces a lot but Americans eat very little. In countries in whichsoy is a dietary staple, men get prostate cancer at a fraction of theU.S. rate. (A second benefit of soy, says Arnot, is a highconcentration of the amino acid tyrosine, which helps keep youalert.)

Dr. Arnot lays out a dietary plan that includes lots ofsoy, along with antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables. Notcoincidentally, this is also a low-fat, heart-healthy diet. Dr. Arnotsays that many men are simultaneously at risk for heart disease andprostate cancer; diets rich in saturated animal fats tend to triggerboth conditions.

Another benefit of Dr. Arnot's plan is that itprevents breast cancer, too, giving couples a powerful incentive tomake the extreme dietary changes necessary to prevent thesehis-and-hers killers. And with or without the spousal incentive,Dr. Arnot says his experience with his own plan shows that men willlose weight, increase energy, and lower stress--a few valuable perksto take along on that longer, healthier life. --Lou Schuler ... 5-0 out of 5 stars PSA Rising?
An excellent first book for readers who have their PSA rising.Reading is very helpful for prevention and for those with cancer recurrance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to prevent and treat prostate cancer
I am a family nurse practitioner. I found the book to be very clear and comprehensive. If you're male and over 40, this is required reading!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great on nutrition but biased & simplistic re: surgery
This book is entertainingly and enthusiastically written and gives excellent information on how to eat to avoid prostate cancer or counteract prostate cancer--help slow or stop its growth--once you have it.I was apalled, however, at how Arnot started his chapter on "surgery," describing two groups of couples in which the men had prostate cancer. The one, happy giggling group was composed of couples where the decision was to "watch and wait" regarding the prostate cancer--in other words, not have radiation or surgery for the present. In the other group, the men had had surgery within the previous year and "These men appeared morose, even depressed. Many complained of the need to wear diapers.Months after the operation, many no longer had any sex life at all."

This picture is biased, black-and-white, unrealistic and I believe cruel to people who are trying to decide what to do about prostate cancer. Surgery IS the gold standard treatment for younger men with cancer detected early--men who might die prematurely and very painfully if they did not have surgery, which has a better than 90 percent chance of curing them. And certainly men like Bob Dole, General Schwarzkopf and thousands of others who had surgery are not morose and feeling as if their lives are over--in fact they probably feel a lot better than the 30 percent of those who watch and wait and after ten years have cancer spreading throughout their bodies.

People have to make their choices as best they can, and both watchful waiting and surgery can be appropriate. Arnot's description painting surgery as totally black was neither good journalism nor good medicine, and as the wife of a 59-year-old-man who will probably have surgery, I did not appreciate the depiction.Less than 8 percent(some say 2 pwercent) of men wear diapers after recovery from surgery and all who have surgery are certainly NOT MOROSE compare to all who wait being giddy and happy. For the fifty to thirty percent who cannot have natural erections, there are several good alternatives that will make the penis erect--and the nerves that cost erections DO NOT hinder sensation or orgasm in anyone--men may not get erect but they can feel and have orgasms! Many people take the lemons of this experience and the surgery and make lemonade, glad to be alive and have a chance at a cure.Making a blanket and untrue statement that suggests surgery leads to moroseness is neither helpful, accurate nor true. The next edition of this otherwise very good book should correct that.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most important book you many ever read....
This book could very easily save your life. While it reaffirmed things I know about fiber, insulin, and exercise, it gave me a lot of new information about how to keep from getting prostate cancer (like my fatherhad), and other important information. It also described "insulinresistance", which is something that I have and has baffeled my doctorfor well over a year! Dr. Bob, thanks for writing this great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars ThePprostate Cancer Protection Plan - Dr. Bob Arnot

Product Description
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men today, closely following lung cancer. About one man in six will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. But only one in 35 will die from it. More than two million men in the United States who have been diagnosed at some point are still alive today. I am one of them. My book, Cancer is a Four-Letter Word: A Pilgrimage into the Emotional, Sexual, and Spiritual Aspects of Prostate Cancer, chronicles my own experience with this terrible disease. From early diagnosis, fear, and panic, to shopping for the best treatment, to surgery and subsequent recovery, I trace not only the physical journey of getting my stamina and good health back, but also the psychological and sexual implications. My format includes an interweaving of my own story of prostate cancer with other men's stories, along with open-ended questions at the end of each chapter to keep men and their partners talking late into the night. There's also a resource list to provide support for a lifetime. Although concise and easy to read, my book doesn't hold back any personal details. Readers will learn what to expect in regard to diapering oneself post-surgery, working through debilitating depression, and forging the uncharted territory of a different kind of sexual intimacy. More importantly, they'll hear about learning to accept support from loving friends and how to talk to God in a whole new way. Rarely does a reader find an account of experiencing God's overwhelming love and grace in the same chapter as explicit details on how to give oneself penile injections to overcome erectile dysfunction! ... This book was extremely well written, an easy to read account of the his journey through the fearful stages of symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. A must read for all men, and their ladies too. I can relate to everything he wrote in this book, because I too was diagnoised with Prostate Cancer at the age of 53. I only wish I had had this book when I took my journey through all the stages of this cancer. I read it in one sitting, while my wife was clothes shopping and I couldn't wait to share the book with her.We discussed it on our way home from shopping. She too wishes we had had this information at the time of journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can relate to the author
I received a copy of this book at a prostate cancer support group meeting. I began reading the next day and could not put it down until finished. I also went through the prostate cancer journey as a 48 year old man with advanced cancer (spread to lymph nodes). I wish I had read this book during my treatment and I would have better known what to expect, especially the depression during 18 months of hormone therapy. It was nice to know I wasn't the only one to suffer through this terrible side of the disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Heart Journey with Prostate Cancer
Kreps takes the reader through a very personal journey, not only through the steps of his diagnosis and treatment and recovering from prostate cancer and laser surgery, but also through the deep places in his own heart and soul struggles with the disease and its ramifications. While an informative book, Kreps is obviously a skilled story-teller, and engages the reader in a well-woven story/journey.I think this book would be helpful to any man wanting to keep his heart and soul honestly engaged in his journey through cancer, and helpful to any spouse or friend or child wanting to know the spoken or unspoken struggles of soul and body one going through this life-disrupting and life-threatening disease may be facing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read
A well written, easy to read and compelling account of the journey through the fearful stages of symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. A must read for all men, and their ladies too.

Product Description
Treatment for prostate cancer may involve active surveillance, surgery, radiation therapy including brachytherapy (prostate brachytherapy) and external beam radiation therapy, High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), chemotherapy, cryosurgery, hormonal therapy, or some combination. Which option is best depends on the stage of the disease, the Gleason score, and the PSA level. Other important factors are the man's age, his general health, and his feelings about potential treatments and their possible side-effects. Because all treatments can have significant side-effects, such as erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence, treatment discussions often focus on balancing the goals of therapy with the risks of lifestyle alterations. The selection of treatment options may be a complex decision involving many factors. For example, radical prostatectomy after primary radiation failure is a very technically challenging surgery and may not be an option. This may enter into the treatment decision. If the cancer has spread beyond the prostate, treatment options significantly change, so most doctors that treat prostate cancer use a variety of nomograms to predict the probability of spread. ... In May 2009, I was presented with Prostate Cancer and told that I required a radical prostatectomy.I learned about The Dattoli Cancer Center and read The Dattoli Blue Ribbon Prostate Cancer Solution. In conjunction with discussions with men who had undergone prostatectomies, I realized that surgery was not how I wanted to fight my cancer. In July 2009, I was re biopsied and informed that I in fact did not have cancer. Every man needs to read this book and acquire the necessary information to help them make an informed decision when told they have Prostate Cancer.G L Spence

Did you know there are at least 28 queries you should probably make, and another 22 if you're looking at brachytherapy?
I know this from an excellent new book on prostate cancer just published by the Michael Dattoli and his colleagues in Florida - The Dattoli Blue Ribbon Prostate Cancer Solution:How to survive and thrive without surgery (February, 2009).
It's a 260-page manual on the latest techniques for treating prostate cancer, most of it written by Dattoli, whose pen portrait in the back says he is "a board-certified oncologist with more than 20 years of brachytherapy experience and has performed thousands of prostate implant procedures...a noted author and speaker in this complex field of medicine."

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Referenc Book
I think this is a great reference book about prostate cancer, however, some of Dr. Datttoli's opinions are probably biased.Nevertheless, I think he explains things simply and clearly. ... Read more
