I used this textbook in my general psychology class in college.
All in all I would say it was a good book. It explores many important aspects of psychology.
It's a very good textbook when taking that subject in school.
(Like any textbook) At times the material can seem a bit dry, but overall it's a very useful text if you are interested in studying the field of psychology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Condition
It was exactly as advertized and it was delivered in a timely manner. Overall a good expirence. Would order from the seller again.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT AS EXPECTED but usable
I was a little disappointed in the condition of the book. I think it was rated much too high in the description. It is quite worn, wrinkled, dog eared, and the cover is in rather poor condition BUT the upside is that it is usable. Shipment was made in a reasonable time and we received it in just over a week. Price was OK but probably just a little too much considering the condition of the book. Would I purchase again from this seller? I might if I really needed a book badly (for school) and no one else had the book at a reasonable price.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to Graduate School, BUY this..
It is an absolute must! Enough said..buy it and you will soon discover what I mean!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good guide
I bought this book to be introduced to the system of Americans Clinical and Counseling Psychology at all and, to get information regarding different psychol. programs, and the process of applying-enrolling into the Universities. The main part of this book dedicated to reports on individual Clinical and Counseling Psychology programs, which looks like list of Universities and their requirements and statistics like recommended courses, GRE and GPA means, % of student receiving, Research areas and so on..Book also contains a lot of tips and advices, like for example, interview's strategic, letters of Recommendation (with samples), format for Curriculum Vitae, even worksheets for choosing programs, for Assessing Program Criteria and for Making Final Choices..etc..A lot of links to the Internet-resourses, where you can find an additional information about accredited programs and so forth.. I found it really very useful.
The only one point which a little bit disapointed me (that's the only reason for 4-stars rating) - the lack information about Master's programms. So, this guide will be great for those, who plans to get PhD or PsyD. Or for undergraduate student, because it give the basic introducing information as well, too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
This is a very helpful book.If you're looking for a specific program or school this book probably has it.If you're just looking to see what schools are available with various counseling programs this is your book. The breakdown of what each school has to offer is incredible and it is organized in an easy to use way. Also, the first 1/4 or so of the book is a step by step guide for you to follow. From choosing a discipline to taking the GRE to choosing a school. It has contact numbers and web addresses for each school and statistics about each school.Very good book for the grad school shopper.

4-0 out of 5 stars PhD and PsyD coverage ONLY
This book is excellent if you're interested in PhD or PsyD programs in clinical and counseling psychology. However, be warned that it does not cover ANY information about masters programs. If you're looking for information on masters programs rather than PhD or PsyD, this book will not help you. I wish I could find a resource just like this but focused on masters programs!

Well I received the book in a timely manner(2 days) however,it did NOT include the access code. Now I have to return the book and I'm very unhappy about that.

The book came was shipped to my house within the 3 days that i requested, however, i was very disapointed and slightly angry that it did not include the "MyPsychLab", which is one of the most important thing i need for my psychology class.
The title says, "Fundamentals of Psychology in context, (MY PSYCH LAB SERIES), and yet it did not come with it?
What is this?
A mistake or some phony thing someone threw in there.
I understand to get the access code, i would have to buy it separately since it didnt come with the book.

Product Description
This best seller breaks new ground by demonstrating how mainstream psychoanalytic theory has evolved into a psychoanalytic developmental object relations theory. The authors summarize the contributions of the major ego psychologists from Freud to the contemporary theorists, including the new findings of the child observationalists. By integrating these several contributions, the authors are able to show that classical psychoanalysis and ego psychology combine to form a unified theory that provides a more profound understanding of the borderline and narcissistic conditions as well as of the neuroses. From this comprehensive synthesis of theory the authors derive techniques for the treatment of the more troubled patient and expand the classical technique for the psychoanalysis of neurosis. Recognizing that there are preoedipal developmental problems even in neurotic patients and that there are oedipal issues in the borderline and narcissistic patients, the authors demonstrate the applicability of developmental object realtions theory across the diagnostic spectrum and include a new chapter on termination.Using numerous case illustrations from their own practice, the Blancks have constructed an extraordinarily comprehensive and readable text that updates psychoanalytic theory for the nineties. ... Product Description
Far from legends of turning lead into gold, psychologist Thom F. Cavalli reveals how the ancient art of alchemy can be used today to create powerful and lasting transformations in our personal lives.

Alchemical practices have been reborn in our contemporary world under the rubric of Jungianism, transpersonal psychology, or depth psychology. But in Alchemical Psychology, Thom F. Cavalli, Ph.D., takes us directly to the source-and on a wonderful adventure into the true nature of our hearts and minds.

In a book that sparkles with verve, life, and practicality, Dr. Cavalli explains how alchemy was one of humankind's earliest efforts to transform the nature of consciousness. What little-known or underground arts did alchemists practice in pursuit of self-transformation-and how can they enrich us today?

Using the same practices that he employs with patients, Dr. Cavalli offers readers a plethora of personal exercises that, among other things, enables them to "type" themselves according to ancient alchemical identifiers of nature and personality. He then provides practices that can help free them from the grip of familiar problems and foster true personal growth.

Beautifully illustrated with medieval prints from the alchemical tradition, Alchemical Psychology gives readers both a richer understanding of their own natures and of the traditions on which many of our modern therapies are based. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Attention All Speculative Alchemist and Jungians
Excellent book for the beginner and adept alike for a fresh and fun Jungian perspective on inner alchemy and the Great Work.I love Jung for his understanding of the consciousness of our being and Cavelli runs with this in a wonderful and facinating direction.

If you are new to the mystical approach of spirituality and self awareness, I highly recommend this as way to get your feet wet and wade into the tides of this journey.

4-0 out of 5 stars a good reference guide to alchemy
This is a fairly useful reference guide, especially when combined with other works on alchemy. I don't agree with the author's stance on laboratory workings or his occasional focus on judeo-christian values, but he does a good job of explaining the psychological components of alchemy as well as correlating the symbolism to the psychology.

What I also liked was that he took a complicated subject and broke it down to easy to read chunks that a reader could focus on over time. I also liked the ten recipes, which I think could be extended into some fruitful pathworking possibilities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Springboard for those considering the Alchemical Path.
"Old recipes for living in a new world!"An old practice which has helped bring humanity to where it is today:Alchemy."Psychological Alchemy" helps give an understanding of the basics of alchemy and how it can be used to assist in your psychological development. The alchemists' use of psychology, symbolism, astrology, their practices and utilization methods assisted them greatly in the attainment of their goals. This work will give you a look at alchemy and foster an insight concerning how to become your "true self," and face whatever is holding you back from reaching your true potential.

Psychology is an art of science which is a very recent development, historically speaking. It was developed to give us a better understanding of ourselves and our psyche. Two of the most famous practitioners of this field, Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, are mentioned in this literary work. The use of dream interpretations to assist in understanding the human psyche is a Jungian technique.Symbols helped alchemists protect their secrets and assisted in providing more insights into the human subconscious mind, which understands symbols on a higher level than does the conscious mind.Jung saw the importance of symbolism as symbols are the language of alchemy, causing him to conclude that dreams are many times symbolic of events or issues with which our subconscious struggles.Using symbolism, alchemy, and the combined product [psychology], the alchemist maintains the great balance and remains in balance and in touch with his/her higher self. Therefore, psychology is not only an integral part of alchemy, it is also a by-product of alchemy.

For many ages, different cultures have studied the stars to see where they were going in life, and to determine latitude and longitude at sea.Astronomical objects affect people all throughout their lives, yet many take no notice of them.Alchemists use the stars to direct energies and to strive for different states of consciousness. The solar system represents the mind, the outer shell or the orbit of Saturn is the conscious mind.As you do more work on yourself and go deeper into meditation, you progress deeper into the subconscious mind. The experiments of alchemists were used to gain a better understanding of nature and by doing so, gain a better understanding of themselves. In so doing, they worked through different levels of consciousness or through each orbit until they reached the center of their consciousness, and thereby transformed lead into gold. There have been two documented cases of this occurrence:Glenn Seaborg, 1951 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, succeeded in transmuting a minute quantity of lead (possibly en route from Bismuth, in 1980) into gold and an earlier report of 1972 in which Soviet physicists at a nuclear research facility near Lake Baikal in Siberia accidentallydiscovered a reaction for turning lead into gold when they found the lead shielding of an experimental reactor had changed to pure gold.Today particle accelerators routinely transmute elements, thereby indicating the conclusion that modern day physicists are also the new Alchemists, in a way.

The elements also play a large part in alchemy as well as the Elementals.Alchemy is, among other things, a combination of science and metaphysics. The symbolism of the elements and their elementals help the psyche to open up and become enlightened.Fire is symbolic of illumination, transformation, and purification.Water shows us energy in motion and is cleansing and will assist in keeping control of our feelings.Earth is the representation of our physical self and can assist us in guiding our feelings with more purpose.Air is the element which represents thought, carries sound and represents the soul.Lastly, but certainly not least, there can be no true transformation without the Divine; Akasha.Akasha represents true knowledge and wisdom. It is that for which we all aspire. The observation and the use of the elements in experiments, with the assistance of the Elementals, raises the level of consciousness which leads to the Higher Self.

Throughout history, many different cultures used alchemy to achieve their own goals. The Egyptians developed their mummification techniques. The Greeks formulated mathematics and are widely known for their philosophies. The Chinese discovered both herbal and massage remedies to be used in healing and they also developed gun powder.Indians used meditation techniques to weave the conscious mind with the subconscious mind, as well as with the Universe.Arabian alchemy incorporates Islamic and Judaic alchemy which led to the development of the Qaballa.European alchemy brought in such greats as Albertus Magnus, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Nicholas Flamel; all of whom were reported to have created the "Philosopher's Stone." All of these great civilizations have given us something to push us further into the future with the use of alchemy.America is next.

One major element in being an alchemist and taking the path to reaching the Higher Self is Individuation, which is the gradual integration and unification of the self through the resolution of successive layers of psychological conflict. In other words, the working through of one's problems coupled with the ability to leave them behind once resolved, and forget them. This process is why alchemists secluded themselves from others and became hermetic. This step requires the individual to lift themselves above what is expected of them from society. They must also accept responsibility for themselves and their actions and rise above their upbringing to find their true Self; or whom they really are.Developing a good self esteem is another part of this system, as you must respect yourself.Having confidence in your abilities so you can be confident in your work is another aspect of needing good self esteem. After all this has been achieved the indivual must be able to maintain this state, regardless of the company they keep and their surroundings. The state of Individuation can be something that some alchemists never truly reach, but one they must all aspire to achieve. To arrive at this state would mean that the individual is one step away from the Philosopher's Stone; not a physical stone, the Philosopher's Stone of their psyche.

Present is also the hidden element of interaction with the Trickster. The Trickster's symbols are Mercury, Loki, and Hermes. The Trickster will purposefully place an obstacle in your path to trip you up and teach you an important lesson, as none of them are mean-spirited or dark-hearted.The Trickster is to never be seen as a wall in your way, but rather as a switch on the railroad to put you on the right path. Many find it difficult to understand them but they are catalysts in any experiment you undertake. The presence of the Trickster in your work helps you learn faster and gain a more full understanding by teaching you new perspectives as well as many other lessons that will, at first, seem to be stumbling blocks but which turn out to be the very catalysts to discovery. These lessons will invariably assist you in life.

This literary work, "Alchemical Psychology", will help you understand the basics and purpose of Alchemy.Through the teachings that are outlined in this book, you will find ways to lift your psyche and heart.Experience, meditation techniques, psychological self-work, an understanding of symbolism and what they mean to your psyche, and a connection with the Divine Beings are major keys to reaching the Higher Self. Our world is ruled by the laws of nature and what we can do with the energies we possess from Nature, Herself.Reaching the Higher Self is the main goal of Alchemy. You must heal the mind, body, and soul to be truly healthy."Alchemical Psychology" is a fantastic place to start this journey and gives a wonderful introduction into the processes of finding your Higher Self.

A word of warning. This work was written with a christian slant. You must overlook the occasional gratuitous references to Jehova and christianity to glean the real meat from the christian bones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Read Book on Alchemical Psychology
This book takes the complex language of alchemy and alchemical processes and translates it into easy-to-understand language. The author guides you step-by-step through alchemical symbolism and alchemical operations as they relate to different psychological processes.

The alchemical recipes expressed through different alchemical operations presented in this book are intended to help you create desired psychological transformation - whether you desire to apply them in your therapeutic practice or to gain further insights and effect the desired transformation in yourself.

Understanding of alchemy is based on practical application and as the author points out "Unlike medical prescriptions, alchemical recipes require full engagement of the mind, body and soul, as well as active participation of the imaginative faculty to make them work." [As a hypnotist, I may add, that this truth applies to successful work with hypnosis, too].

The author does quote excerpts from Corpus Hermeticum - and this particular excerpt is the jewel of the Corpus Hermeticum:

"Rise up above every height: descend deeper than any depth;
Concentrate into thyself all the sensations of created things
Of water, fire, dry and wet.

Think of finding yourself simultaneously everywhere in the
Earth, sea and sky;
Think of having never been born,
Of still being an embryo;
Young and old, dead and beyond death,
Embrace everything at the same time;
All times, places, things, qualities and quantities."

The author also at times draws parallels from the world of quantum physics, and other spiritual and esoteric traditions,
to ellucidate specific points he desires to make.

5-0 out of 5 stars Going for the Gold...........in your Self
This is a great read.Anyone interested in the transformation of the soul, the refinement of their base nature into pure golden light and transparency should read this book.Thom Cavalli has poured an enormous amount of love into this work and clearly shows. Not a work is wasted. You read a paragraph and have to walk away to ponder it. A book to return to time and time again as your understanding grows. It is rich with symbols, ancient alchemical art and mystery.I absolutely love this book. ... Read more

Product Description
The updated third edition of Advances in Sport Psychology offers a view of the latest research in the field of sport psychology. The text is written by 34 of the field's most prolific researchers and scholars, including Maureen Weiss, Shane Murphy, and Albert Carron. These contributors extend the boundaries that have defined the field and provide a clear direction for future research.

This third edition has been completely revised to reflect the advances that have occurred in the field within the past several years. The text provides readers with a complete picture of current research and emerging topics in sport psychology while challenging researchers to examine the factors that keep this discipline growing. Advances in Sport Psychology, Third Edition, provides a fresh look at sport psychology with these features:

  • Four new chapters on qualitative research methods, achievement goal theories, self-confidence, and family and peer influences
  • Significant revisions of the second-edition chapters, along with more concise overviews of individual topics
  • An analysis and synthesis of the state of knowledge for each topic and a discussion of future research directions
The text focuses on the most important and active areas of current research, which recognize the merging of individual and socioenvironmental factors in making sense of sport performance and behavior. Each chapter includes a definition of terms, an explanation of the chapter's scope, and an outline of the sections. The author then provides a review of the available research and theory on the chapter's main topic, analyzes the state of knowledge in the area, and devotes significant space to future research directions.

The book is divided into four parts. Part I offers a comprehensive introduction to the field, including definitions, history, and research paradigms and methodologies. Part II explores individual characteristics that affect sport participants' behavior, including self-perceptions, attributional patterns and perceptions of control, motivational orientations, and achievement goal perspectives. 4-0 out of 5 stars Social Pyschology
Good value. Condition was described accurately and that was really appreciated! Shipped quickly and in time for my class.
Would buy from dealer again.

4-0 out of 5 stars So informative!
I read this text in conjunction with my social psychology class and it was an informative and pleasant read!

3-0 out of 5 stars I Would Have Adopted It--Even Without the Peer Pressure
Our university adopted this text through the usual committee process--into which I did not have direct input. So I am in a position to grumble about it as a psychologist and as a sometimes-instructor.But I don't care to do so.This is a reasonably good text that covers the standard areas of social psychology, has been kept up to date, and has a good set of student learning aids.

Sandwiched between the introduction and a closing survey of applied disciplines, the ten meaty content chapters serve up a satisfying helping of core topics in social psychology.Chapters two through eleven cover Social Cognition, Social Perception, The Self, Attitudes, Stereotyping-Prejudice-Discrimination, Interpersonal Attraction-Close Relationships, Social Influence, Prosocial Behavior, Aggression, and Groups and Individuals.Across chapters, the authors emphasize broad themes of emotion, culture, neuroscience, evolution, gender and social aspects of the web and other technologies. My only complaint is that the Aggression chapter comes so late in the chapter sequence.Makes me kind of mad, it does.

Three types of boxed sections are distributed among the chapters and describe selected topics in depth."Building the Science: Classics of Social Psychology" sections highlight important research and theories that have influenced the evolution of social psychology."Social Psychology: What It Tells Use About..." sections relate the field to aspects of daily life."Making Sense of Common Sense: A Social Psychological Perspective" showcases research findings that challenge "what everybody knows" about key topics. There are eleven of each type of section. They are well-written and fairly interesting. Most of them, anyway.

Students are given assistance in mastering the content by standard instructional features. They include effective section summaries and review questions, end-of-chapter summaries, well-annotated charts, and a suitably comprehensive glossary, references section and subject index.Students have come to expect and rely on many of these features. It's harder to teach them when a textbook does them poorly. This text does not disappoint.

I would have recommended this book to my department and don't feel particularly grumpy about having missed that committee assignment.I will recommend it to you.Whether faculty or student, you will do well with it.It's too expensive, of course--but that's just how it is with textbooks these days.

1-0 out of 5 stars what delivery?
I ordered this item and it was sent to my apartment. Now mind you I have ordered plenty of times through amazon and I have never had any issues with receiving books I have ordered. Well this time around I waited 3 weeks and then I look online to check the status where my Social Psychology book was and it said that customer refused delivery!?!?! I contacted the seller and asked them why it said I refused delivery and they had no answer. The only good part was that I was able to get a 100% refund. This was a huge inconvenience to me seeing as to how now I dont have the book for class. Bad experience this time around. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good resource
This is a good resource for those who are interested in learning about the different subfields in psychology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Up-to-date and well done
This is an excellent resource for all psych majors out there who are wondering what to do with the very popular degree they are pursuing. The authors urge students not to think in terms of "jobs in psychology" per se (because it is rare to see a job advertised for a psych major),but instead to think of the skill sets they have developed through studying psychology (helpfully identified for you), and to consider how these skills can be used in the workplace.
The rest of the book lays out various professions where psychology skills are used. Each chapter is devoted to an area (i.e. consumer psychology, social psychology, neuropsychology, health professions etc.), and specific jobs in that field are described in clear detail. You learn which jobs require only an undergrad major versus those that require advanced degrees; descriptions of these jobs; recommendations for additional coursework you might want to do if this field interests you; current pay scales; an evaluation of how competitive the job market is for each job and what the prospects are in the coming decades. You can even take a quick little "quiz" to help you decide if this is a field that might suit you. It is easy to navigate through the book, and the authors do a good job of pointing out a lot of factors that you might not have considered.
My only criticism is the book's format: the small font and the unimaginative page layout are at first off-putting. But, perservere! This is a remarkably helpful book that gives a lot of good information in a consise manner. You'll be glad you bought it.

1-0 out of 5 stars I didn't like this book

Product Description
Psychology, according to James, deals with thoughts and feelings as its facts and does not attempt to determine where such things come from. This would be the realm of metaphysics, and he is careful to avoid crossing over from science into philosophy. This second volume covers sensation, imagination, reasoning, instinct, emotions, will, movement, and the perception of objects and space. Anyone wanting a thorough introduction to psychology will find this work useful and engaging. American psychologist and philosopher WILLIAM JAMES (1842-1910), brother of novelist Henry James, was a groundbreaking researcher at Harvard University and one of the most popular thinkers of the 19th century. Among his many works are Human Immortality (1898) and The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature (1902). ... Read more

Product Description

Psychology does not need to be overwhelming or scary. For many students the idea of studying psychology can be a little…nerve-wrecking.The functions of the brain, psychological theory, and core concepts of study can seem like a vast undertaking.Creative Concepts in Psychology: An Activity and Case-based Approach proves that this material is manageable, fascinating, and totally engaging for students.

Creative Concepts in Psychology: An Activity and Case-based Approach looks at the study of psychology in a different way than more traditional Psychology text.Rather than place the bulk of the emphasis on concepts with only a few end-of-chapter activities, Creative Concepts in Psychology balances theory with application in a meaningful way.Every chapter provides the core pedagogy, but also devotes substantial time and energy to case studies and student activities.By merging these concepts so seamlessly, the ability to both learn and apply is mastered in every chapter.

A successful psychology text not only teaches students, but also empowers them to use those concepts beyond the classroom.Creative Concepts in Psychology: An Activity and Case-based Approach strives to reach past basic understanding to full synthesis by giving students both a thorough understanding of ideas and the chance to see those ideas played out in scenarios that resemble the sorts of things a student may encounter in his or her own life. With titles like “Why am I so Tired?,” “Wild Days,” and “Exhaustion Hurts” the case studies in this text are going to have an impact because they reflect the daily struggles many students encounter.
