The Garter snake is a Colubrid snake genus common across North America, ranging from Alaska and Canada to Central America. It is the single most widely distributed genus of reptile in North America. There is no real consensus on the classification of species of Thamnophis and disagreement among taxonomists and sources, such as field guides, over whether two types of snakes are separate species or subspecies of the same species is common. They are also closely related to the snakes of the genus Nerodia, and some species have been moved back and forth between genera. Garter snakes are widespread throughout North America. The common garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis), is the only species of snake to be found in Alaska, and is one of the northernmost species of snake in the world, possibly second only to the Crossed Viper, Vipera berus. The genus is so far ranging due to its unparticular diet and adaptability to different biomes and landforms, with varying proximity to water. However, in the western part of North America, these snakes are more water loving than in the eastern portion. Northern populations hibernate in larger groups than southern ones. Despite the decline in their population from collection as pets (especially in the more northerly regions in which large groups are collected at hibernation), pollution of aquatic areas, and introduction of bullfrogs and bass as predators, this is still a very commonly found snake. The San Francisco garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis tetrataenia) however, is an endangered subspecies and has been on the endangered list since 1967. 5-0 out of 5 stars The must-have ball python book
Excellent and comprehensive with many beautiful photographs. This book is detailed, extremely well-written and edited and utterly readable. The authors cover everything from ball python worship in West Africa to tips on incubating eggs.Every experienced and beginning ball python owner should have this book. The authors warn against perils from seemingly innocuous features of your snake's habitat (for instance, how a young snake can get stuck--and die--in a piece of pipe larger than his body).A bit of tongue-in-cheek humor as well. The only drawback is the use of tiny grey (!?!?) text that appears beneath plates.Reading glasses and a good flashlight help here, and it's no reason to pass up this outstanding text. This is wisdom from masters in the art of ball python husbandry.Buy this book; it's worth every penny, and you owe it to your snake.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on Ball Pythons
The Barkers, who wrote this book, are one of the best in the business. This, along with Kevin McCurley's book, should be staples in any ball python breeder's library. This book is massive, and the pictures of the morphs alone are worth buying the book. However, I must point out, you can buy this book cheaper from VPI directly.

Product Description
The reticulated python is thought to be the longest snake in the world. After the capture of a 28-foot member of the species in the swamps of South East Asia in 1912, President Roosevelt established a $1000 reward for the capture of a 30-foot python. Eighty-seven years later the award remains unclaimed (having risen in increments to $50,000) and Robert Twigger, after being apprenticed to a bunch of former headhunters turned expert snake catchers, heads into the remote jungles of Indonesia armed with only a tin of High Toast Snuff (deadly if sniffed by a snake) in search of his prey. Along the way, he investigates the legendary beautiful women of Sulawesi, treads in Nabakov's footsteps through the remote area of Bone, looks for giant snakes beneath the sewers of Kuala Lumpur, and spends time with a variety of snake catchers and cults. After being caught up in anti-Chinese riots, surviving on greasy civet cat in the jungle, Twigger finally comes face to face with the big one. But the final capture is not what he quite had in mind. ... Read more
