    Extractions: In the early 1960's the discipline of computer programming was only some ten years old. The pioneers of the field were ready to bring along the second generation of programmers, but they ran into an unexpected difficulty. It seems that the first generation of programmers were very, very closely aware of the working of computer hardware. This hardware was itself developed while they were in college and graduate school. Many of them had been instrumental in the development of computing hardware, and they knew in close detail how it worked. Thus programming that hardware was a natural extension. Much of this programming was done in Assembly language which is barely a step higher than Machine Language. But very quickly it became apparent that a higher-level of abstraction could lead to easier and more rapid development of programs. In the 1950's some higher-level programming languages became available, chief among them COBOL. These higher-level programming languages seemed a godsend to the programmers of the day. They increased productivity many times over. But they were still very, very difficult for new programmers to learn and to use. So in the mid-1960's the move was on to create simpler, easier-to-use programming languages. About 1964, Professors Thomas Kemeny and John Kurtz of Dartmouth College collaborated on a project to design and implement such a programming language. As is typical, they tested their ideas on their computer science students, and the results were very, very positive.
