Sometimes, as in the case of the Roman Catholic church, these requirements are numerous. The Religious Society of Friends is near the opposite end of the religious spectrum. They rely heavily upon spiritual searching by individual members, individual congregations and meetings (regional assemblies). This makes the Quakers difficult to describe in a short essay. We attempt here to portray mainstream Quaker practice. Some Quaker meetings at the liberal and evangelical ends of the spectrum differ significantly from what is covered below. The movement was founded by in England by George Fox (1624-1691), a nonconformist religious reformer. At the age of 19, he left home on a four year search, seeking answers to questions which had troubled him since his childhood. He sought guidance from a variety of the country's spiritual leaders. He gradually became disillusioned with those leaders and with the existing Christian denominations. At the age of 23, he heard a voice, saying "there is one, even Christ Jesus, who can speak to thy condition"

The Quakers won the first contest 9-4 before falling 6-5 in the afternoon finale. In the first game the Quakers and Cardinals both scored two runs in their halves of the first inning with Otterbein adding their third run of the game in the second, taking a 3-2 advantage. After tying the game with a run in the fourth, the Quaker bats came alive with a trifecta of runs in the sixth and seventh while the Cardinals were only able to manage a single run the rest of the way. The Green and White managed only seven hits in the first game, with all seven coming from different batters. Tom Harter (Westlake/Westlake) knocked in a pair of runs batted in while Justin Evans (Franklin/Franklin) and Jimmy Wolverton (London/Madison Plains) each scored a pair of runs. Derek Wellington (Chillicothe/Chillicothe) pitched the complete game for the Quakers, improving his record to 5-0 while striking out four in the game. In the second game the Quakers started the scoring with two runs in the second inning before the Cardinals erupted for five runs in the bottom of the second, creating a deficit that the Quakers could not recover from. The Cardinal's lead grew to four when the hosts scored a run in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead before the Green and White closed the gap with three runs in the fifth inning, but it was not enough as the Quakers were defeated 6-5.

It was during a time of civil war in England. a period filled with religious and political strife which led to the Protectorate under Cromwell. Today we would probably call it a dictatorship. The same thing happened then as on so many other occasions when a political or religious movement has been successful. It is apt to forget what it originally set out to achieve, namely its right to freedom. When the movement has come into power it will not grant to others what it struggled to obtain for itself. That is what happened in the case of the Presbyterians and in the case of the Independents after them. It was not the spirit of toleration and humanity that conquered. This was experienced by George Fox and many of his associates during the ensuing years, but they did not take up an armed fight such as the custom is among men. They went their own quiet way because they were opposed to any use of force. They believed that in the long run spiritual weapons would lead to victory, and this belief had been acquired through inward experience. What they regarded as important was life itself and not the forms it assumed. Formalities, theories and doctrines have never been a matter of importance to them, and, therefore, from the outset, they have been a community without any strict organization. This has given the movement an inner strength, a more unbiased view of their fellow men, and a greater degree of toleration towards others than is found in most organized religious communities.
