    Extractions: ANGLICANS, PURITANS, AND QUAKERS IN SIXTEENTH- AND SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY NEWFOUNDLAND by Hans Rollmann Introduction There has been a persistent historiographical tradition from the beginning of the nineteenth century that the earliest settlers of Newfoundland were Puritans who were guided religiously by dissenting ministers. Anspach, the Anglican missionary and schoolmaster in St. John's and Harbour Grace, wrote in his History of the Island of Newfoundland (1819): "A considerable colony, composed chiefly of Puritans, accompanied to Newfoundland Captain Edward Wynne, whom Sir George [Calvert] had sent with the commission of Governor, to prepare every thing necessary for his reception ..." Judge Prowse, reproducing information from a now entirely lost pamphlet by Mrs. Siddall, the wife of the Congregational minister G. Ward Siddall at St. John's, on The Origin of Nonconformity in St. John's, Newfoundland , in his History of the Churches in Newfoundland (1895), a supplement to the influential History of Newfoundland (1895), popularized from fact and fiction the most comprehensive picture of Puritanism on the island. Its beginnings can according to Prowse be traced to the time of Queen Elizabeth when "some of the English separatists (Independents) were banished to Newfoundland ..., and in the small scattered settlements then existing about St. John's and Conception [Bay], these victims of Elizabeth's ecclesiastical tyranny could easily hide themselves away." We are told that the "separatists were the extreme branch of the Puritans, who had broken away from the Church and the Hierarchy."

    Extractions: Originally published August 1, 1998 at Suite101.com At the beginning of the Friends movement in the 17th century, Friends were controversial for a number of reasons. One of the major ones was the belief of Friends that ministry came through women as well as men. In the early years of the Friends movement, there were a number of Friends traveling in the ministry often called the "Valiant Sixty" (there were actually more than 60 of them). These Friends evangelized Great Britain, Jamaica, what is now the United States, and a number of other places. There were women as well as men in this work. Friends in those years were often beaten and jailed for their witness. In a few cases, they were even executed. Perhaps the most famous Quaker martyr was Mary Dyer . In Boston, a law was passed in 1658 banishing Quakers under "pain of death." When Mary Dyer learned that two of her friends were jailed in Boston, she went to visit them in 1659 and was thrown in jail. She and her friends were released, but assured they would be executed if they returned. Less than a month later, she returned to Boston. She was imprisoned, saw her two friends hanged, and was to be executed herself, but was reprieved at the last moment with the rope around her neck. Still not deterred, she returned yet again and was hung on June 1, 1660.

As the Quaker movement was developing, Christian bodies did not generally take a pacifist stance. Friends themselves took a little while to become clear about it as a movement. In the very early years of the movement in the mid-seventeenth century in Britain, some Friends served in Cromwell's army. As late as 1659, prominent Friend Isaac Penington wrote a paper To the Parliament, the Army, and all the Well-affected in the Nation, who have been faithful to the Good Old Cause , in which he said the army had been "glorious Instruments in the hand of God."
