This is, by far, one of the best machine quilting books on the market. As good as Harriet Hargrave's seminal work!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good practical advice for entering quilt shows
This book is very helpful, with practical advice on Dos and Don'ts for entering your quilts in local and professional quilt shows.
Easy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get This Book!
I was looking for ideas regarding quilting designs and got so much more. Karen's books often include DVDs and this one is invaluable to learn how to do some very basic techniques. Squaring up a quilt, top notch binding and sleeve instructions to name a few. Every quilter can learn how to improve even if you never plan to enter your quilts in a show.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but geared to Longarm
I have her previous book on "McTavishing", which is much better. This book does not show techniques on a standard home machine, as the previous book does.Still, the information is interesting and I did learn a few techniques that could translate to a home machine.

good and lots of ideas but they are the same style of quilting.not my style

5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Practical Guide
In an artists book, you wouldn't think "practical" would be a very interesting word. However, in this case, practical is perfect.

Entering competitions is a scary concept. You are putting yourself out there for other people to judge, and that isn't often comfortable. Therefore, you want to do your best. Karen is utterly amazing at making sure that, when you are ready to enter your quilt in a contest, you are actually "ready". You know that you are entering a quilt that is not only beautiful to you, but is also technically proficient. You wouldn't go to a job interview with your slip hanging below your skirt, or your shirt partially tucked. Think of it this way - you are sending your quilt for avery important interview - you want her to look her best! Karen helps you do that.

There is even an included CD which, for those more 'visual' of us (and aren't we all, as quilters, visual to the max?) which leads you through instructions for how to do some of the more detailed (no, don't read "difficult" here) methods, like making really pretty feather quilting patterns.

Overall, a great investment. And don't think that, because you aren't planning on entering a quilt in a show, that this book wouldn't be of great use. We all want to learn and do work we are proud of, and this lovely little book will certainly help you to do so. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know and more
I had borrowed this book from the local library and could tell straight away that this would tell me everything I needed to know about quilting. I also checked out all the positive reviews on the Amazon website. Just read the contents, and everything is categorized with lots of images. I am sure this will be a well-used reference book for both new and experienced quilters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resouce
This is very well done. Even a seasoned quilter can pick up tips or revist information they learned years ago and find useful information. I like the books format, the pictures and illustrations are helpful and clear. I'd consider this to be along the lines of a quilter's encyclopedia.

I use the internet a great deal and it's really nice to come across a 'book' that is so well done & have it on hand in my art room. Nicely done.CJ

5-0 out of 5 stars lots of information
I found this book to have more information than I expected. It reminds me of looking in an encyclopedia. There are plenty of great pictures, line drawings and explanations. I found this book to either give me much of the information I needed on a subject, or at times, at least enough to get me started. I would say it covers a whole lot of information in a nice hardcover book that is thin enough to take from workroom to couch for a good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatbook for beginners
This was the first quilting book that I checked out from the library when I started thinking about quilting.I liked it so much, that I ended up buying it.I just couldn't imagine not having it by my side when I had questions (and as a beginning quilter, I have a LOT of questions!!).This is a great book with a lot of information in it.There is only one other book that I think is just as good and that is _The Quilters' Ultimate Visual Guide._Both books have many color pictures and explain things very clearly. If I could only have two books on basic quilting information, I would pick these two.Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Show off your quilting
Quilting inside the Lines is my preferred book on machine quilting. Pam's techniques are easy to understand, easy to build on and look sophistacated whether they are or are not. Well worth the $$. The book shows designs for many different blocks and how to interpret the patterns for other blocks. After practicing these techniques I found my skills growing quickly and easily. I practiced on paper to understand the motions and the order of sewing. This helped immensely. Most of the patterns are designed for blocks, but can easily be interpreted for borders and sashings. If you can do a meander with the darning foot, you can use this book. Some of the techniques take a little practice to master. Pam's tips throughout are excellent. Well worth the $$. Way better than a three or four hour hands on class. Impress your friends in no time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Resource for Quilter Artists
This big book of ideas is exactly what active or "artists in planning mode" quilters need for inspiration. Beautiful book for great ideas. One of my favorite books to refer to when I am planning my next project.

5-0 out of 5 stars What an Inspiration
After seeing the exhibit at The Chicago Quilt Show I had to have this book. It is extremely inspirational and I believe it will help anyone generate new ideas. Additionally, I enjoy reading all of the personal comments from the creator of each project- it is like reading someone's diary. And finally, it is a book that I find myself going back to again and again and it seems like a new book everytime. I cannot recommend this book enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative Quilting
Wonderful book.I immediately bought at least one more copy as a gift for a friend who's also getting into quilting. There were ideas for techniques and products for fabric art.The stories behind the quilt squares were very moving also.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I have a lot- and I mean a lot - of quilting books, and this is one of most inspiring books I have seen. The quilts are all small and very interesting. Each one is accompanied by an explanation by the quilt's creator. It is sort of a whole new look at the possibilties of quiltmaking. My mind immediately started racing with ideas.Because the quilts are very small, they seem very do-able.This is not your average book with patterns, but instead it is a book of possibilites and inspiration.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money!
Save your money and go buy $14 (item plus shipping) worth of fabric instead of this "workbook". Although I give high praises to the original book PERFECT QUILTING SPACE, this "planner" is a joke and most certainly should have been included in the original book. For this price, I expected vinyl stick-on furniture models and erasable/wipeable graph paper. It is nothing more than a 2 page piece of card stock graph paper with scale furnishings (none of which fit my quilt room furniture!) that you're supposed to COPY! Do yourself a favor and just grab a piece of graph paper and measure your furniture and draw up your room on your own. (The "workbook" wants you to do that anyway!). Don't waste your hard-earned money on this product. Just an FYI - this is my FIRST negative review on Amazon!!

5-0 out of 5 stars helpful
This was very helpful. It contained all the info and the cutouts I needed to help me design the perfect space for my quilting.Highly recommended!

1-0 out of 5 stars Huge Waste of Money
I bought what I thought was a book, but was only a pamphlet called Creating the Perfect Quilting STudio Space STudio Planner. It was a total waste of money and if I had known what it was, I would not have purchased it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Planning a room or building a house
If you have ever wanted to rearrange a room but hated the thought of moving a piece of furniture only to find that it won't fit, then the STUDIO PLANNER is for you. This four-fold plastic covered sheet provides you with all the things you need to plan a room layout and only have to move furniture once.

The eight pages of this PLANNER contain a cover page, instructions on how to use the PLANNER, a work sheet where you can list all the rooms dimensions, two sheets of furniture "miniatures", a two page grid sheet for playing around with the miniatures and a sample page that show what one layout looks like.

Another great feature of the PLANNER is that you can write on it with white board markers. This makes any information completely erasable so you can plan many rooms with this one PLANNER.The price of $12.95 makes this an affordable way to plan any room, whether you are rearranging a present room or building a new room/house.

5-0 out of 5 stars Planner saves time
I thought the book was great and have used a lot of the information from it.This planner is a good tool to use with it.The suggestion to use the dry erase marker was perfect.I found drawing with pencil a little hard to see but the dry erase marker solved that issue.Rather than cut out the templates from the planner, I made a photo copy and cut it up.This allows me more flexibility and preserves the templates for designing the next dream studio.I found the convenience of having someone else measure all of the common sewing furniture, and draw the templates for me, worth the cost.I've searched out 1/2 inch grid paper in the past and found the local office supply didn't have it.It's a matter of where you want to spend your time; researching the size of sewing furniture, or sewing. As always, Amazon was very clear on the number of pages and the format.Designing your studio with this planner provides a tool to discuss new pieces of furniture with a cabinet maker (or in-house carpenter, if you're lucky.) ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not a good book for beginners
Please note :I wrote this review for beginner quilters only :

Please beware that this book is not for beginners... Not that it claims to be... It does have pretty pictures of nice quilts. And if you can follow hand drawn black and white diagrams - this book is for you..I guess I'm spoiled because there are so many books out there with actual pictures that take you step by step, plus even if you never make a quilt it is nice eye candy... This book is not like that.. This is the only quilt book that I've purchased that I didn't like...

I give the 4 stars to the Authorfor Talent.

4-0 out of 5 stars A little repetitious, but very good.
This is a respectable quilting source, and it does have a LOT of helpful explanations for beginners. The patterns are almost all basic bed-quilts/wall-hangings, and most of them involve whimsically multiplied cats, sheep, cows, snowman, and children silhouettes, but they are still very cute. It you like "country" motifs, you'll find a lot here, but if you want something more modern-looking, look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book.
I found this book is great for someone who wants to start-up in patchwork quilting.

Highly recommend this one. Very easy to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Muito Bom

3-0 out of 5 stars cute projects
I checked this book out from the library enough times that I decided it would be best to own it!I love the cute animal quilt projects.I've just made the sheep quilt so far.All the pattern/quilt strip pieces didn't fit together as well as I would've liked, but if you're an experienced seamstress, you can still make it/them work for you. I think the author could've done a better job with making the original cutting measurements work together without having to stretch pieces to make them fit. As I said, you can still make it work for you. These projects are all sewn in large strips, sewn together, then cut down to smaller sizes; then sewn together. So, in the end, you haven't had to cut a bunch of tiny squares; its a time saving way to sew quilts. And, everyone likes to save time. The quilt designs are adorable and true to Debbie Mum's style. 5-0 out of 5 stars Quilting Block & Pattern-A Day 2008 Day-to-Day Calendar
I was given the 2006 version of this product by an Aunt and loved it. This year I was talking to a Quilt Buddy who enjoyed this product in the past so I surprised her with the 2008 version. She enjoys it and has it displayed on her desk at work it sure brightens up her day as she pulls up the new day's block. I bought one for myself also. It is fun to see what new block each day brings and it is a wonderful source of inspiration to help get out of your comfort zone of block making and try new blocks and techniques! There are great instructions and helpful hints and tips to help any Quilter advance their Quiltmaking skills.

Book Description

Focusing on design rather than technique, this guide demonstrates how a motif can be rotated, reflected, or repeated to create an entirely new quilt pattern. Thirty base elements are provided in several sizes for easy tracing, scanning, or photocopying, and step-by-step instructions explain how to arrange copies of the chosen element to create border, corner, block, or frame designs. Illustrations show examples of assembled patterns, and the last chapter provides directions for adding trapunto, a padding technique that adds depth and definition. The DVD counterpart brings the discussion to life as the author creates a custom quilt design based on a single geometric figure, marks a quilt top, and demonstrates three different trapunto projects.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best resource for beginners
This was my first quilting book, and though I enjoyed the overall text and format of the book, I do not feel that it is a good resource for beginners. The instructions lavishly soft-ball such topics as color-combinations (crucial to quilting, but not THAT difficult for a beginner!) but zip far too quickly through the actual process of cutting, sewing, and quilting a quilt. The cut-out patterns do not make it clear whether or not the "extra" 1/4" seams are included in the pattern (they aren't) and there is simply no excuse for such sloppiness, especially when dealing with a beginner who wouldn't necessarily know better.

Also, the sewing machine section is terribly sparse. This was a disappointment to me, because I quilt with a machine, never by hand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful information for quilting
I thought the book was quite good.It was a great help with some of my questions but could have been more thorough on some of the sections. That being said I still think it was informative and would recommend for another beginner.

1-0 out of 5 stars Made no sense
I have taken a couple quilting classes and made 2 crib quilts before buying this book. I'm currently attempting the "Trip Around the world" design and can not make sense of the instructions. I've already spent about 15 hours (my mother too) trying to make sense of what goes where. It just isn't clear or there is an incorrectly written step.Very frustrating.

5-0 out of 5 stars no longer an idiot
Great easy to understand instructions and diagrams. No longer feel stupid since all questions and answers are here.Tells you what you need to know and then some.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
I've owned and borrowed a lot of quilting books. This is one that is in my "fave five". Excellent examples of how the quilting design can change the look of a quilt. This book will help you decide how to "quilt as desired".

5-0 out of 5 stars Quilting
It's great to see the difference a little quilting can make. I even bought 2 more as gifts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very beneficial
I am a beginner quilter. The pictures in this book showed each quilt top done in 5 different top-stitching machine-quilted patterns. The borders were of special interest to me also. This book was a blessing in helping me to complete my first quilt.

5-0 out of 5 stars good for hand-quilters too
I do both hand and machine quilting, and I find the author's presentation of different ways to quilt the same top to be equally valuable for both. One of the hardest things for me to visualize is how the quilting will alter the look of the patchwork. When I'm mulling different quilting designs, I can get out this book and find examples of the types of designs I'm considering, usually on patchwork that is similar to mine. She really does have a wonderful variety and some very creative and delightful quilting designs (e.g., the diamonds and the chevrons on the log cabin quilt). This is definitely a book I'm glad I own. And, by the way, the workmanship on the quilts is excellent. I'm truly in awe of quilters who can do what Cleland does.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have book
I can't add much to everyone else's reviews except to say that this is a wonderful book which I take out of my personal library every so often just to look at the photos. This book shows 12 quilts, each one done 6 times! Such great quilting ideas BUT I appreciate that I can also see ways that I will NOT have a quilt quilted.Since I have begun paying to have someone quilt for me I can show them what I want so much better (I hate the quilting part but love the designing & making the top). ...
