5-0 out of 5 stars Good book because...
This book has one thing that very few quotation books have...more information after it states who stated the quotation.Because what I have found is that most of the times when you read a quotation book, you tend to not know who the person is who stated the quote in the first place. For example, there could be a quote such as, "Racism should not be an excuse to not do the best you can in life." by Malcolm X, (the name of his book), (year), writer. Most of the time, quotations will just have the quoter's name and that's it.This book is definitely more insiteful.

4-0 out of 5 stars COMMUNICATE YOUR IDEAS BETTER!
Bored with using the same old words, ideas and concepts? Is your audience turned off rather than attentive when you speak? With this book you can talk more effectively to anyone. The quotations offered are clear, direct and can be understood immediately.Robert Torricelli has provided a gem of a collection. He cites Presidents, Kings and Queens, Poets, Writers, Actors, Philophers, Politicans, Military Giants and more.He has creatively grouped them into fifty varied categories in alphabetical order. At a glance, one can find quotes dealing with: - action, age and aging, the arts, courage, education, fate, global affairs, honesty and trust, individualism, justice, love and friendship, the media, past, present and future, peace, politics, poverty, progress and change, race and ethnicity, religion and faith, science and technology, unity, urban affairs, war, youth.Every home should have this book on the family shelf for easy access. My favorite quotesare: "there is nothing permanent except change".-- Heraclitus.-and -"When I was young, I could remember anything, whether it happened or not!" - Mark Twain.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy reference - good material
There are good points and bad points with this book. One of the negative things I noticed is that it has plenty of white space in each section, where more quotes could have been added. It does make it easier to read, but when you're someone who has to give speeches on a regular basis, your search for the perfect quotation may not come to fruition. However, out of all the quotes the book possesses, the material is excellent and very usable.Another downside is that the book is a little pricier as compared with other quotation books on the market. You may be able to find one for the same price that has double, or even triple the amount of quotations.

The book is broken down into categories; from Leadership, Environment, to Presidents. The categories are very high level, so if your looking for a specific category, you may not find it.

Out of the last 3 speeches I've given, I've used 2 quotes from this book. All and all, it's a good book...Out of all the quotation books I browsed through at the bookstore, this one took the prize.Besides all the negative points I mentioned, I have no regrets for purchasing this book. It's simplicity and ease of navigation definitely makes it a great addition to any speaker's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to own ...
Senator Torricelli's book is a rare find - a very well thought out book that covers a wide expanse of quotations from hundreds of people. The book is presented by categories (life, liberty, etc.) in a simple manner that makes it easy for anyone to use.It is an excellent reference tool for writing and speech preparation - and would make an great gift to anyone who loves history or politics!

5-0 out of 5 stars Quotations for Public Speakers
Senator Torricelli has garnered a remarkable anthologyof quotations from a broad range of topics. Each topic, from justice to the media, is valuable and matters in today's neoteric society. He has arranged them in a style that is simple and efficient. All this makes "Quotations for Public Speakers" a delightful reading for everyone and anyone. However, this book is most effective for use in presentations. One can find quotes to vitalize or add emphasis to any speech. It is a very worthy addition to any library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, fun and conversational
Being originally from the Republic of Georgia I have used many ESL books to learn English and so far CompellingConversations has been the most exciting, fun and informative. The quotes, proverbs and questions provided under each unique topic were super fun to go through andvery helpful as a conversational tool. I enjoyed the topics relating to free time and would have loved to seen even more questions on art and photography. Compelling Conversations is an awesome book that makes the process of learning English natural and entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book this world needs now
There are so many things to enjoy about Compelling Conversations, I don't know where to start. The beauty is, open the book to any page, and you CAN start. On this rapidly shrinking planet, where English is becoming, more and more, the lingua franca of business, Eric H. Roth and Toni Aberson have created an ESL workbook that reminds us first, as the best teachers do, of our humanity. Quotations span the globe from Buddha to Woody Allen; topics are universal, from pet peeves to falling in love. Questions are thought-provoking ; there's space for notes and fun exercises to do on your own; you'll find quirky, confidence-building reminders like "Make good mistakes". I have yet to find a page that doesn't make me smile and feel grateful to be alive. If you teach English as a Second Language, if you're a student of English--or someone who speaks it already and is looking for the perfect icebreaker for classes, workshops and coffee tables, wrap your hands around a copy of Compelling Conversations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for conversation classes.
I found Compelling Conversations to be a great resource when planning out my conversation lessons. The idea of using quotes and proverbs to generate discussion is very good and accessible for all levels of second-language learners. I came to rely on quotes quite heavily later on when designing my own lesson plans. Thumbs up to Eric for producing such a great resource book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Creative, Superb Book
Here are these two instructors of ESL to adults who have written this wonderful, erudite and fun book for use in the classroom and I wonder how to get all teachers of ESL to adults to know about it, buy it and use it. Many wonderful approaches to be used in the classroom are given, including proverbs to be used in discussion groups in the classroom, arresting quotations that encourage thinking and use of vocabulary and ideas galore generally organized into the book.

With about twenty-seven years of teaching ESL to adults in New York City in adult education and in graduate school of an educational institute and of writing curriculum for my own classes and for a broad range of ESL classrooms, I have never come across such a helpful book that is also so much fun to have for use in the classroom. I would have been proud to write this book and I would be happy to use it in a classroom and recommend it wholeheartedly even though I did not, in fact, write it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm keeping it!
I was almost happy to see how little this terrific book sells for; now I get to hang on to my copy of it! How can so many book readers resist "over 400 put-downs, backbites, & civil leers from the poisoned pens pens of great writers"? Snap it up!

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Screamingly Funny! (Catty, Yes--but Funny!)
James Charlton's marvelously wicked collection of the cattiest, sharpest, wittiest criticisms of writers by writers is a hoot! The book is chocked to the brim with quote after quote of brilliantly crafted--if barbarous--quips about some of our most celebrated writers. If you've ever wondered what was so great about a particular author, you're not alone!

You'll laugh a lot (and often wince) when you read this book. There's hardly a dull quotation!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sages Through the Ages
Unseemly as it probably is to review a work in which I, myself, am quoted, I can't help myself, a combination of pride, shock and ego having overshadowed my better angels.

Coming of Age: a Treasury of Poems, Quotation and Readings on Growing Up, edited by Edward Searl and published by Skinner House Books (an imprint of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations), has to be one of my favorite anthologies in which my work has been done the honor of being included.

A tidy size for toting along anywhere, don't let the petite dimentions of this important volume mislead you. It is chock full of meaningful tidbits by marvelous writers beside whose valuable contributions to the annals of literary history my own paultry work must surely pale by comparisson.

Nevertheless, Mr. Searl has done me an unspeakable honor for which I will always be grateful: to have included my thoughts alongside those of such notables as Kahlil Gibran, Anais Nin, Virginia Woolf, Robert Fulghum, J.D. Salinger, D.H. Lawrence, George Eliot, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Thomas Wolfe, Walt Whitman, James Michener, Joseph Campbell, E.B. White, Rudyard Kipling, Robert Frost, Edgar Allen Poe, Henry David Thoreau, Vachel Lindsay, Albert Schweitzer and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Pretty impressive company in which to find one's self, eh? Even Aristotle, Shakespeare and Proverbs are quoted within these richly packed pages.

I feel confident anyone picking up a copy of this small volume of great breadth will find something of value within. It's the type of book in which readers might want to underline striking passages, then refer to them again and again amid moments of impact throughout their lives.

Ideal for both thinking adolescents and young adults, as well as for the loved ones trying to guide them into adluthood without losing their own hard-won perspective, Coming of Age is (rather understandably) a garrie keyman recommended reader.
