Extractions: Rabies is a viral infection that affects the nervous system of mammals, including humans. The disease is almost always fatal to both people and animals. Raccoon rabies spreads rapidly and infects large numbers of raccoons. The disease often spreads to other wildlife and pets, making human exposure a real concern. To address this problem, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the Florida Department of Health, and other state, federal and local partners, initiated a program to vaccinate wild raccoons in the Central Western region of Florida. This vaccination program builds on the successes of the Pinellas County program. How is a raccoon vaccinated? A raccoon is vaccinated by eating a bait containing the vaccine. The raccoon will develop antibodies in two to three weeks. The antibodies will protect the raccoon if it is exposed to another infected raccoon. If enough raccoons are vaccinated, the disease can be stopped. Can the vaccine cause rabies?

They appeared in Little Abaco a couple of years ago and have been spreading south ever since; the assumption is that someone brought them over from Grand Bahama. Now raccoons are undoubtedly a nuisance - they raid fruit trees and are far more adept at opening garbage cans than the average potcake dog could ever hope to be - but the main concern has been that when they reach South Abaco, they will wipe out our native Abaco parrot by raiding nests and eating eggs and nestlings. Now, let me say up front that introducing raccoons to this island is an incredibly stupid thing to have done, but the fact is that as in the case of Casuarina trees and feral (that is, domestic that have reverted to the wild) cats, there is not a whole lot we can do at this point. The genie is out of the bottle, and we'll just have to cope. So what is the damage likely to be? I'm not so sure that it is as bad as it appears, although to tell the truth we won't know until the raccoons actually arrive in South Abaco. As they say, the proof will be in the pudding. Survival in the woods can be hard, especially for an injured raccoon, a broken-winged owl or an abandoned domestic cat accustomed to the comforts of home. Death comes all too quick for these creatures when they are forced to fend for themselves in the wild. Local wildlife have a friend in Jill Smith at Trail's End Wildlife Refuge, however. She takes in the stray and injured animals and provides them with food, safety and first aid. She can be found in her yard most afternoons, cleaning one of the 10 or so cages that house creatures such as Petey Petunia the Skunk or Pokey the Opossum or the hundreds of raccoons she gets every year. When she is not feeding or tending to the animals or cleaning the outside pens, she may be in her house, where there are several, smaller cages. In one cage is a opossum born without a tail, another houses a chipmunk with an injured leg; and a third is home to a turtle who is missing his two back legs because a duck ate them. The turtle can still swim quite well in the tank, but Jill said he would die quickly if he were on his own. The opossum without his tail also would not survive very long in the woods. They rely on their tails for balance and spend a lot of their time in trees.

That means, just since you haven't SEEN a raccoon, that doesn't mean it isn't there! Have you ever heard someone fooling with the ice coolers during the nights on Scout camp outs? It wasn't Mr. J. getting hungry for a good ol' bologna sandwich, I guarantee you. It was a raccoon! They are opportunistic feeders. They know where the good eats are, and know it is the Scouts coming back with food. And they are hoping it is a messy troop of boys who don't know how to clean up after their cooking! Any food tidbits left lying on the ground will become food for raccoons and other creatures, such as skunks and 'possums during the night. After mentioning the second creature, 'nuff said. Clean up thy kitchen men! Raccoons are very good with their hands, and can easily open doors. So it is important to close the lid on chuck boxes and put the lock on them. The ice chests need to be pushed closed. If you don't push on them, the raccoon can push the lid up. One disadvantage the raccoon has is its weight. It is hard for US to open those ice chests when they are closed correctly at times! If you have a trash can, make sure the lid is down tightly. If not, a raccoon will will will have all of his buddies over, and they do make a racket chattering about the good eats! Trash bags also need to be tied shut with a rope, and pulled up over a tree branch (AKA"a bear bag").

Because a current trend in the United States indicates that there has been a higher incidence of rabies in cats than in dogs in recent years, rabies vaccination is especially important for cats. Cats left outdoors to roam have a greater chance of exposure to rabid animals, but even indoor cats should be vaccinated, as occasionally they may get out and/or wild animals, such as bats or raccoons, may get into houses through open doors, windows, or uncapped chimneys. You should get your pet vaccinated at a private veterinarians office or at a free state/municipal-sponsored rabies clinic. Do Not Feed or Handle Wild Animals. The fur is long and soft with dense underfur in the winter and thick guardhair on the back and around the tail at all times of the year. Young are colored similarly to adults, except that the top of the head, nape of the neck, and area behind the ears are brownish black, whereas these areas on adults are lighter. In general, the more northern raccoons have longer and darker coats. The hind legs and feet are generally dark brown to black. There are five digits on each foot, each with a non-retractile claw. The raccoon leaves a distinct hand-like print on soft ground that can occasionally show the individual toes. Prints made by the front feet average 6.5 cm (2.5 in.) long by 6.5 cm wide, while prints made by the hind feet average 10.5 cm (4 in.) long by 6 cm (2.25 in.) wide. Average width between prints is 9-13 cm (3.5-5 in.) and the length between prints is 15-52 cm (5.75-20 in.) In October 1988, Public Notice 2887 made keeping any wild game or furbearing animal illegal, said Randall Miller, chief of law enforcement at the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks. The consequences of breaking a law may prevent some people from becoming attached to a wild animal; however, the law can be hard for officials to enforce. Dean Stewart, extension wildlife specialist at Mississippi State University, said other than the risk of getting caught, there are plenty of reasons not to keep wild animals for pets. "People commonly see young animals, such as a fawn, in the woods and think they have been abandoned by their parents. But 99 percent of the time the mother is nearby and will return to it," Stewart said. "It's best to leave young animals alone." The potential spread of diseases is a significant problem when humans decide to interact with wild animals. Not only are people susceptible to many diseases wild animals may carry, but domestic pets are vulnerable also.

Extractions: With their bandit masks, dextrous hands, and endless curiosity, baby raccoons rank right up near the top of just about anyone's cuteness list. But before you rescue one, there are some important things you ought to know. I've noted many times throughout this site that it is illegal in almost every state to be in possession of any type of wildlife without a permit or license, so will not rehash that here. Instead, I'm going to focus on the health risks involved in handling (wild) raccoons. But wait, there's more. The majority of wild raccoons are infested with Baylisascaris procyonis , commonly referred to as "raccoon roundworm". This interesting little parasite reproduces at a phenomenal rate (females shedding millions of eggs at a pop) and can survive for years, even through freezing winters and summer drought. The eggs have a sticky coating which helps them find new hosts (through grooming), and are resistant to common disinfectants. Bleach solutions or products such as Lysol only remove their sticky coating, but do not kill the eggs. And therein lies the reason for this particular web page. So how do you care for raccoons and still sleep at night? As I've already said, proper hygiene and the ability to quarantine the raccoon(s) are essential. Keeping cages free of feces (and avoiding touching them) is imperative. Don't forget that the 'coons may step in their feces, so wash both your hands and theirs! Fecal tests for parasites, especially on young raccoons, often present a false negative due to the 30-day life cycle of the roundworm (only adults are killed by the medication), so do not let them lull you into a false sense of security. Worming should begin immediately and done every week as long as the animal is in captivity.

Extractions: While traveling through a midwestern state, a family from Texas encountered this baby (six week old) raccoon standing over the body of her dead mother. The mother raccoon and a sibling to this animal had just been killed by an automobile. The well-meaning family took the animal into their automobile and brought it back to Texas where they began raising it as a family pet. When local wildlife officials learned of the animal they had it confiscated and turned over to Chihuahuan Desert Wildlife Rescue. The Good Samaritans were advised that they could be in deep trouble: It is hoped that the animal can be once again adapted to an existence in the wild and released. She is currently undergoing preparation, along with a classmate about the same age, for life in the wild. Once ready, the pair will be flown to an isolated area by helicopter and set free. Little Pache (from the Spanish mapache for raccoon) was found cold and abandoned in a rural suburban area of El Paso. He was immediately taken to a veterinary clinic. From the clinic he was transferred to CDWR. He was about 2 weeks old and still had his eyes closed. As he was born so late in the summer, he will not be a suitable candidate for release this year before winter sets in.

Raccoons are becoming more and more common in suburbs and towns as well as in rural areas. The increase in Illinois wildlife enhances our environs, but human-wildlife interactions can also have some negative consequences. The Illinois Natural History Survey Center for Wildlife Ecology and the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine have been collaborating on a study to evaluate the health of wild raccoons. Raccoons were given physical examinations and blood and fecal samples were collected to test for diseases that can be harmful to humans, pets, or livestock. One of the most common infections found in raccoons was leptospirosis. Almost 50% of the healthy raccoons showed current or previous infections with Leptospira bacteria. This organism can also spread to humans and their pets causing ailments ranging from mild, flu-like symptoms to severe disease. Leptospirosis is transmitted when the bacteria, which are usually excreted in urine, come in contact with mucous membranes or broken skin. The organisms can survive for long periods of time in warm, stagnant water. People handling raccoons should wear gloves and those engaging in recreational activities in areas of high raccoon density should be made aware of the risks. In Hawaii, signs are posted along many streams and wetlands warning of the hazards of leptospirosis; however, the risk there is higher because of the warmer climate.

Using raccoon locations taken from 1 April to 31 May (defined as entire nesting season), we generated 100% UD grids using a harmonic mean estimator in ARCVIEW. We used all locations taken on each hen from nest initiation until the termination of nesting effort to generate UD grids for hens during the nesting period. Grid-based UD provide grid-specific values for utilization, with smaller values indicating peaks in use. We set the grid cell size to a somewhat arbitrary 100 m because smaller cell sizes likely exceeded the resolution that triangulated telemetry locations provided to determine animal locations. Once UD grids were developed for each raccoon and hen, we merged all grids for each species into 1 landscape-level grid. This allowed us to simultaneously examine cumulative raccoon and hen use across both areas. We chose to partition individuals by area because forest management practices, particularly burning and thinning regimes, differed greatly between areas. Peaks in use by raccoons on TWMA occurred within 2 major habitat types: mature pine and pine stands <6 years-old. Nearly all troughs in raccoon use occurred within mature pine stands burned
