As the flag dropped, a spectacular convoy of twelve magnificent pre-war racing Bentleys, with a 1929 model driven by Prince Michael at its head, revved up and roared away from the circuit, bound for Moscow. Ten days and 1,700 miles later, all twelve cars drove triumphantly into Red Square on the dot of 12 noon, an impressively punctual climax to a journey that had taken them through five countries, raising money and awareness along the way for the British-run charity Friends of Russian Children, of which Prince Michael is the Patron. Prince Michael with Carolyn Cripps in Moscow The idea of the Rally came very much from the Prince himself. A long-time vintage car enthusiast and one of the team that set a new 1,000-mile speed record for cars over 5000cc in a 1929 Bentley Special, he had been looking for an appropriately imaginative way of combining his love of old cars with an effective fund-raising drive on behalf of FoRC. The charity was founded in 1994 in the wake of an horrific head-on rail crash involving two trains, one transporting highly inflammable fuel and the other carrying 300 children to a summer camp. Of those who survived the ensuing inferno, many were terribly burned and it is the specialist burns unit at Moscow's Speransky Hospital No 9 that is the focus of FoRC's fund-raising efforts.

His Royal Highness, who qualified as a Russian interpreter during his time in the Army in the sixties, returned to the Defence School of Languages at Beaconsfield in July for an intensive ten-day Refresher Course. With the emphasis on oral work, the course included one-to-one conversation classes, interpretation exercises and the translation of live Russian television news broadcasts. The Prince, who never misses an opportunity to practice his skills on his regular visits to Russia, impressed not only Robert Avery, the man in charge of the Slavonic Languages Wing at the Defence School, but also the visiting heads of the equivalent Russian military and diplomatic language school. Colonel Sergei Vasiliev, head of the military section of the Russian Foreign Ministry Training Academy for Diplomats (M.G.I.M.O), was visiting Beaconsfield, along with his deputy, Lt Col Viktor Yershov, in connection with an exchange arrangement whereby people studying Russian at the Defence School spend time at M.G.I.M.O in Moscow as part of their 18-month course. His Royal Highness played an important part in getting this scheme off the ground in 1999. As Robert Avery explained: "Things got rather bogged down at the Russian end at one point as a result of the Kosovo crisis but Prince Michael, who was very much in favour of the idea, managed to have a word with Mr Yuri Fokine, the Russian ambassador in London at the time, and he in turn was able to get things moving again".

Rome, NY: American Publications, 1974. No ISBN. Middle school and up. George Attla is still a name to be reckoned with in Alaska mushing circles. Although his chief fame has always been as a highly successful and respected sprint musher, like most sprint drivers he took a try at the Iditarod.
