    Extractions: The first days of the new year always encourage bird listers to open their account for the year by seeing as many bird species as possible. Of course, this often results in some good rarity records. The month opened with news of a Stone Curlew at Timoleague, Co Cork, which is highly unusual - though not unprecedented - in winter, and it seemed to follow a pattern where many 'summer' visitors were recorded in the winter of 2001-02. Perhaps this has something to do with global warming? Also early in January, there appears to have been an influx of Ring-necked Ducks, with reports of several from Cork and singles from Westmeath, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Donegal, Kerry, Wexford, Clare and Mayo. Other American ducks were an American Wigeon at Rogerstown and three at Timoleague; Green-winged Teals (now elevated to species status) in Kerry, Dublin, Antrim, Down, Cork and Wexford; Surf Scoters at Waterville, Co Kerry, Ballyvourney, Co Waterford, and Murvagh, Co Donegal - where a total of five were seen; and a Lesser Scaup at Lough Neagh. Numbers of Black-throated Divers seem to have been lower than in recent years, with 13 the maximum recorded from Galway Bay during the month, and scattered reports of single birds from Dun Laoghaire, Strangford Lough, Donegal Bay and Dursey Island, although three together were seen off Helvick Head, Co Waterford. Similarly, numbers of rare grebes were also down on previous years: only one Red-necked Grebe was reported, from Castlegregory, Co Kerry; two Black-necked Grebes at the usual haunt near Cobh; and isolated reports of Slavonian Grebes from around the coast, but one inland at the Gearagh, Co Cork.

Birders now generate many of today's data on species' distributions and field-identification aspects of North American ornithology. Most professional ornithologists recognize that the large volume of data generated by birders, especially that involving extralimital records, cannot and should not be ignored just because most of it is not based on specimen evidence. There has been considerable debate, however, over what sorts of other documentation are acceptable. In recent years, rare-bird committees (RBCs) have been formed in most states, provinces, and many foreign countries (Roberson 1990) to help bridge the gap between specimen and non-specimen records. RBCs are composed of experienced amateur and professional ornithologists. The RBC process includes acquisition and protection of rare-bird documentation, evaluation by a panel of knowledgeable peers, and publication of proceedings. Preparing for Field Observations Look Beyond Field Marks Cameras and Tape Recorders for the Field Photographs Photographs provide the best means for birders to provide tangible proof of a bird's occurrence. You need not be a professional photographer to take recognizable pictures of a bird, nor do photos have to be of publication quality to serve as documentation. Even distant, blurry, or poorly exposed images may be useful in identifying a bird or providing support that the identification was correct. Many such examples have been published in American Birds (see also Roberson 1980).

    Extractions: The march of red deer in upland Scotland has been matched by roe deer in lowland England. The roe deer, extinct in England and Wales 200 years ago, now numbers about 700,000. The sight of a big roe buck leaping across farmland thrills the heart. We are glad for its wild spirit, unfettered by hedges, fences and roads. Unfortunately its freedom is increasingly at the expense of other plants and animals. This spring the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the British Trust for Ornithology will begin monitoring birds in 350 woods. The study follows startling declines in many woodland species. Since the 1970s willow tit numbers have fallen 78 per cent, woodcock by 74 per cent, and song thrushes by more than half. Deer can change a wood drastically. They nibble back ash, bramble, hazel, honeysuckle and sallow, leaving less palatable species to flourish. They eat shoots and saplings, so preventing woodland from regenerating. Gradually they reduce the plant variety which is crucial for the diversity of other woodland wildlife.
