Editorial Review

Book Description
Contrary gardener Gene Logsdon has found animaginative way to introduce gardeners to a more totalenjoyment of nature--fauna as well as flora. What gardenersconsider pests (rabbits devouring petunias, deer browsing themorning glories), Logsdon views as just more of nature'swonders, and teaches us, intimately and lyrically, to livetogether with them in harmony. If you're not yet familiarwith the wonderful musings of Gene Logsdon, this is a perfectintroduction. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I appreciate Mr.Logsdon's writing abililty. In fact, I was enjoying the book immensely until I got to the part about killing the raccoon, which happens to be the animal I wanted to learn to get along with.I think thetitle is very misleading.I wanted to know how to get along with mybackyard neighbors, and not by killing them.To top it all, he actuallygave recipes for raccoon dishes.Like I said, it was quite enjoyable untilthis part, but I feel there are much more pleasant ways to get along withour backyard neighbors.I don't offend easily, but this title does not fitthe entire contents of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best if sipped like fine, Kentucky bourbon
Gene does a fine job wrestling with this immense topic. As a house owner on the remotest fringe of suburbia, I can attest to the accuracy of the observations in his book.

Wildlife in the Garden has manycharacteristics in common with Gene's other writing. Some of the mostenjoyable lines are his observations on human nature.Anothercharacteristic of Gene's writing is the density. He packs manyobservations, facts, vignettes in each essay. This is not pulp fictionthat you can bolt down in an afternoon. It is best taken in small bitesand savored. This book is likely to have a long tenure in our privateImhof memorial library.

Lest you think the book is perfect (By the wayGene, thanks for the check) I do have a few *minor* quibbles.

Abibliography would have been a fine addition.

Some of the materialseems to be a bit elementary. Many people who are starting to landscapefor wildlife want a paint-by-numbers approach.Gene probably had to dothat to serve their needs.

Gene tends to be a bit emphatic about TheRight Way To Do Things, but that will only bother the feeble-minded. (Iwon't let it bother me.I won't let it bother me. I won't let it botherme.)

This book was first published in 1983.Gene's writing style haschanged in that time. The book reads more smoothly when taken in sips andnibbles. But that is perfectly OK because this is the kind of book thatwants to be read slowly.

Let me emphasize that these are *minor* quibblesand I enjoyed the book.

(Final note for those who are hooked up to publicsewerage, the septic tank was invented by an engineer named Imhof) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone who cares about animals!
Ms. Lopez has really done something special as she combines a love of animals with practical advice on how humans and animals can co-exist.She passes on to her readers the benefits of her amazing experience as a volunteer at a Texas wildlife refuge. Her special connection with this subject matter enables her readers to discover new and exciting ways to enjoy wildlife while still preventing thos unwanted problems that sometimes result when we get "too close" to nature. Thanks Andrea!

5-0 out of 5 stars When Raccoons Fall Through Your Ceiling - A. Lopez
Andrea Dawn Lopez's book explains in easy-to-understand text why human/animal conflicts or situations occur, and what to do to remedy them.Anyone who's ever had an animal visitor in their home will find this book useful. As the title suggests, Andrea explains how to coexist with wildlife in a non-lethal manner. The author's affection for wildlife is evident in her warm, tender writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good information
I Loved this book it's finaly nice to have writen material on how to deal and live with our wildlife. I live in the country and some people just dont understand that the animals were here first and it is our job to learn animal safty and respect and also safe ways to deal with the animals. Andrea covers all this in her book and I would like to prsonally Thank her.

Sincerly,
Julie Hanenberg

5-0 out of 5 stars For the Love of Animals
How true this writing is.The animals are being forced out of their natural habitat to make room for humans.
I have no doubt that Andrea's experiences go well beyond what she has written about, even as a child. She has made it clear that co-existing is possible without much effort on our part.
BE PREPARED!Where have we all seen those words written before?
Although "common sense" is not all that "common", I think this book makes clear to all of us what we can do to make our lives and the lives of the animals a much safer place. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent photos and text
This is the best of many books I have read about raccoons. It is chock-full of splendid black-and-white photos, and the text is extremely clear, comprehensive, and informative.Unlike some authors who write about these animals, Rue is not given to sentimentality or to "literary" effects. He states the facts plainly, and he has many facts to relate.I read this book through in a very short time and only wished it was longer. My only other regret was that the pictures were not in color (my edition was published in 1964).Reading this book has made me want to read more of this author's works. ...
