Book Description
Antenna Zoning for the Radio Amateur

-- By Fred Hopengarten, K1VR

Everything you and your attorney need to know to obtain a permit for your antenna-support system.

What to do when things turn ugly after your antenna system is up.

Don't let the confusing tangle of ordinances and by-laws keep you from installing the antenna you need in order to communicate effectively! In recent years, many cities and towns have enacted ordinances designed mainly to regulate cellular antenna structures. Unfortunately, hams have sometimes been caught in the backlash of regulatory overkill. This book describes proven techniques and strategies that a ham and his or her attorney can use to obtain an antenna-structure permit (also includes material on Canadian law and regulation). You will learn ways to respond to a wide variety of complaints after the permit has been obtained, if the town, or your neighbors, turn sour. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Provides a treasure chest of material!
For those who find themselves facing potential new, adverse local government regulation, ARRL has recently released a new publication, Antenna Zoning for the Radio Amateur by Fred Hopengarten, K1VR. This is an excellent new publication that provides a lot of material to help you as you approach local governing bodies to be able to put up an antenna.

There is a CD ROM with documents you can use directly to aid your efforts. The book may seem a bit pricey ..., but if you find that you are in need of an attorney's services in your quest, you can save more than the cost of this book in attorney's fees because the book provides a treasure chest of material your attorney will not have to search out! I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful book & CD which are full of useful tips and info
This is a delightful book and CDROM which are full of useful tips and info. Hopengarten impressively thought of everything and still expresses interest in learning and sharing more.

We're certainly fortunate in this wonderful hobby of ours to have talented individuals like Fred Hopengarten, Jim O'Connell and other volunteer counsels to share valuable insight into the various aspects of our hobby.

Whenever another ham knocks the ARRL, my response always includes remarks to the effect that everything I know about ham radio comes from ARRL literature. This magnum opus certainly further justifies my thoughts in this regard.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST read for anyone planning to put up a tower
I am really excited about this book. I get a lot of e-mails and telephone calls asking for zoning information. This new ARRL book is a MUST read for anyone planning to put up a tower. Get the book and read it before you even look at an antenna catalog.

Fred Hopengarten, K1VR, a communications lawyer and contester, has written a truly fine book designed to save the serious amateur a lot of money, time and grief. It is a must read for any ham who plans to buy a house and put up a dream antenna system. Even before you buy the house or begin looking at tower and antenna catalogs you should get a copy of the book. There is practical advice on selecting a real estate agent, dealing with a town clerk, and getting a copy of the local building codes. Fred covers every subject you can think of and then adds quite a few you didn't think of but should have.

Don't be put of by the ... price tag as it will be the best money you will spend on the entire house and antenna project. Your initial reaction may be that this is way too much for a book that is only 286 pages long, but be aware that you also get a CD-ROM crammed full of precedent setting cases, sample letters and documents designed to help you and your lawyer prepare you zoning application and or appeal. Director Jay Bellows, KØQB, a Minnesota lawyer who serves on the Tower Assistance Committee with me, feels that the CD-ROM is the best part of the book as you or your lawyer can edit the PDF files using Word and tailor them to your needs.

Even for an old veteran of many tower battles this a truly invaluable book. Fred takes us through the entire process providing detailed guides along the way with tips on how to talk to town officials and what not to say. These are very important things easily forgotten. He makes the point that you should at all times be the good guy in the white hat who lets the town know what he is doing an why. It is surprisingly easy to read which is a real accomplishment with a subject as detailed and complicated.

The book is designed to give you a view of the entire process and help you avoid the pitfalls that others have fallen into along the way. It is a college course in the subject at a graduate level. Some few may discover after reading it that they came across the book too late in the process and would be better off changing their plans or looking for a second dream house.

It will save me hours on the telephone when a local ham calls for advice. But even for them the book may be helpful in making that decision possible. The best advice I can now give is before you even begin to look for a house, read Antenna Zoning for the Radio Amateur. Failure to buy and read it is almost certainly guaranteed to cost you many times more in money and time wasted. ... Read more

Book Description
This guide introduces the reader to the ionosphere, including its formation, complexities and its use for HF communications. It first provides a comprehensive background of the ionosphere and its variations, before addressing the structure of the ionosphere for HF radio propagation under both quiet and disturbed conditions. Some of the problems faced by the HF communicator are then explained in terms of changes in the ionosphere caused by solar-terrestrial interactions. The guide also provides a review of available HF propagation prediction programs, using one of the best to illustrate some of the phenomena which make HF communications such a fascinating and challenging field. This is a very informative text for the serious HF radio operator, written by a scientist with over 20 years experience in ionospheric research. ... Read more

Book Description

2AZK saves the day!

Back in 1923, a long-distance telephone call took hours to place, and overseas calls weren't possible at all. But a new invention, called wireless radio, permitted instant communication over long distances. A young boy, itching to get involved, buys a secondhand receiver and earphones, and studies hard to learn Morse code so that he can pass the test to qualify as an amateur radio operator and get his own station: 2AZK. Its fun talking with people all over the world just by tapping on his telegraph key (and readers can tap along - there's Morse code to follow in the pictures). Then one night he picks up a distress signal from Florida -- family stranded in flood -- and uses his skill for something more important. Based on the author's father's experiences as a young ham operator in the 1920s, Radio Rescue is an exciting story of a moment in technological history.

4-0 out of 5 stars CQ - CQ --Radio Rescue
The book is quite nice. My only issue is the rather light type faces used throughout the book. I believe that medium weight faces would be much easier for a child (or even an adult) to read.
The content is better than I expected. I have been a HAM/Radio Amateur for over 30 years, and know a bit about the subject. A good story, and a pleasant read.
I purchased this book for one of my young grandsons, as he is developing an interest in electricity and radio communication.

1-0 out of 5 stars YET AGAIN..Tesla has been erased from history
At the begining of the book there is a pencil drawing of statues. It's meant to be all the people involved in inventing the radio.
Watts,Morse and OF COURSE Marconi is in there but no mention of the man who actually invented it..Nikola Tesla.
Please look up Tesla Erased..very informative.
My daughter is named Tesla because I wanted her named after someone who was honest and did something to better the world,
It's offensive enough that Marconi (aka MarFONI) is in there but Tesla isn't mentioned one bit.
Even if you think Marconi "invented" it..Tesla should have still been mentioned but who cares about someone who wasn't rich.
I proudly named my child after Dr.Tesla who invented way more than the radio and it was a shame to bring her home a book that doesn't even mention him. I am only glad I didn't pay for it but borrowed it from the library

4-0 out of 5 stars Radio Rescu
An excellent story to read to young children.A good way to get them involved in a hobby, in particular amateur radio. Particularly relevent considering the 2004 hurricane season when 4 storms hit Florida, and the 2005 hurricane season with Katrina and Rita.

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK for yourself, your kids, your grandkids !
This, like all of L.Barasch's books, is wonderful.Giving a great deal of information about a particular time and place and people, in a captivating, humorous and caring way. The story is told in a deceptively simple way, because there's alot of information in it.Look at the illustrations closely:you'll see alot, too.To be enjoyed and read repeatedly.Fine for girls and boys five to 12, and everyone else.

4-0 out of 5 stars Telegraph Transmit
Radio Rescue shows how even young people can help others. Lynne Barasch writes about her father as a 10-year-old boy, who in 1923 falls in love with the newly created telegraph machine and spends two years becoming a telegraph operator. This boy became an experienced operator and in 1926 was able to relay a message which lead to the rescue of a family in Key Largo, Florida.
This is an historical non-fiction picture book with full-page color cartoons written in first person from the perspective of the author's father. The book also includes a time line of the invention of the telegraph, a list of the advantages of the telegraph, and a chart of Morse code.
Radio Rescue is suggested for 5-8 year olds but 8-11 year olds would understand the concept better.Robert J. Marx, the author's father, wrote [this book is a] "mostly true and faithful recording of my very younger days"...[and he is] "...stil completely [sic] fluent in Morse code as I learned it at age 10..." ... Book Description
To an outsider, the world of ham radio is one of basement transmitters, clunky microphones, Morse code, and crackly, possibly clandestine, worldwide communications, a world both mysterious and geeky. But the real story is a lot more interesting: indeed, there are more than two million operators worldwide, including people like Walter Cronkite and Priscilla Presley. Gandhi had a ham radio, as do Marlon Brando and Juan Carlos, king of Spain.
Hello World takes us on a seventy-year odyssey through the world of ham radio. From 1927 until his death in 2001, operator Jerry Powell transmitted radio signals from his bedroom in Hackensack, New Jersey, touring the worlds most remote locations and communicating with people from Greenland to occupied Japan. Once he made contact with a fellow ham operator, he exchanged postcardsknown as QSLs cardswith them. For seven decades, Powell collected hundreds of these cards, documenting his fascinating career in amateur radio and providing a dazzling graphic inventory of people and places far flung.
This book is both an introduction to the fascinating world of ham and a visual feast for anyone interested in the universal language of graphic design. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Loved the book
I bought this book because it was about ham radio. I was impressed at how well the storyline was. You actually felt as though you were there watching this story go on. A must read!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars For Design People, Too, Not Just Hams
I know nothing about ham radio and loved this book.It is beautifully constructed, has amazing graphics and a great story that Gregory has reconstructed about one man's passion. It's a book about communication, and humanity, and art and how small the world really is.Gorgeous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Demystifies Amateur Radio (Ham Radio) with superb graphics!
I was given this fantastic book by my neighbor and friend here in New Jersey, who is a longtime Ham Radio afficionado (and Police Officer by occupation).Truth be told, I have always wondered about Jim's (my mentioned neighbor/friend) hobby/pastime, especially given his tower and antenna systems, which are large and visible and hard to ignore!I did not know much about the hobby, other than 'people talk around the world much like CB'ers talk locally'.I now realize how utterly wonderful, fascinating and riveting this hobby is!Not to mention critical in times of regional or national emergencies! The authors take you on a FASCINATING journey through the ham radio life of an engineer named Jerry Powell, an actual FCC licensed 'Ham' operator from Kansas who moved to New Jersey early on in his career and spent decades on the air from his humble home, communicating with Hams everywhere from all kinds of economic and ideological backrounds. The book is replete with interesting vignettes and descriptions of what Ham Radio is all about, and the true passion and wonderment of engaging in all aspects of this hobby shared by millions around the world. The graphics are first rate, with a veritable 'world tour' of colorful QSL cards, which reflect many of Jerry's contacts with other Ham Operators from every conceivable corner of the world! After reading this book and 'taking in' the wonderful graphics, I even picked up a few entry-level study guides from the ... site (National Amateur Radio organization) on the advice of my neighbor Jim, and I am excitedly planning on obtaining my entry 'Technician' license!I can't wait to get on the air!Just a superb, SUPERB book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Journey
This is an outstanding book which is beautifully illustrated primarily with QSL cards from a ham's 70 year love affair with his hobby that also serves to explain what amateur radio is to the newcomer. I have QSL cards on my wall from the fifties and received my first call in 1955 so to me this book is a real find.Any ham or person curious about ham radio will find this book a true gem.73s, Jim, K4CFA

5-0 out of 5 stars Talking to the World
With the rise of "personal" electronics--think Internet, tiny cell phones & other wireless connection tools--the world of ham radio seems to have been passed by, forgotten, or otherwise relegated to the basement, or worse. But this hobby holds on, fascinating & attracting those wanting more, some means of talking, chatting, meeting & interacting with the world at-large. Who want something besides giant corporations (ultimately concerned only with P&L)& sometime silly can-you-hear-me-now keyboard manipulations.Something beyond the anonymous nature of what we call commercial radio.

Hams, by & large, remain a curious lot--curious about how & why radio works. And curious because how is it possible to sit in your room & talk with someone else halfway around the world, without wires or other connections?Curious about the nature of communication itself, about who might be on "the other end" of that circuit. And curious about who & what they might be & do.The process occurs thousands of times, day & night, spanning everything, from continents to cultures to countries to crazy dreams & ideas. There's a romance to it, listening to signals that are all around us, unseen or felt, until we hook up a radio & detect them.Ham radio lets you put your own message out there, into that vast ethereal space, seeking something only you know about, something only you want.

"Hello World" introduces readers to some of that romance, to some of what kept Jerry Powell (whose collection of QSL cards form the basis of the work) doing it for 70 years. To some of what fascinated him, & continues to fascinate millions of others around the world. It's a graphical treat, & a rare look into radio from the amateur's point of view.Hopefully, some youngster, somewhere, will see it, & want to learn more--about radio, the world, & communicating with it via radio.

And Jerry Powell's legacy will live on...and on.... ... Read more
