Book Description
This textbook describes the field of radio and television in the United States, presents the material in a manner the reader can grasp and enjoy, and makes the book useful for the classroom teacher.

Written for adaptation to individual teaching situations, the book is divided by subject matter into logical chapter divisions that can be assigned in the order appropriate for specific course students. Each chapter stands by itself, but the book is also an integrated whole. It is easy to understand at first reading, by beginning radio-television majors or nonmajor elective students alike. To give readers a complete picture of the field, subjects such as ethics, careers, and rivals to U.S. commercial radio and television are included.

5-0 out of 5 stars how to get it in China
Hi! Editors. I am Yanbei Liou from China, and my callsign is Bd2bh.I Iike the ARRL Handbook for Radio Amatures 2001 very much. For I had read it for many years (1987),but i never read it newly again. Like all hams in China I could not get it, and hope it will be published in China, and be bought

5-0 out of 5 stars The Radio and Electronics Reference Manual
The 2001 edition of The ARRL Handbook is the latest and most up-to-date version of an excellent reference book for both the Amateur Radio operator or anyone interested in RF engineering. The Handbook contains information on the basics of radio operation and practices and detailed information for the RF engineer needing to know technical component details. The ARRL has again designed a wonderful book that will provide information for all levels of hams.Information on the new HF digital modes is provided, as well as the old standards of voice and CW.For those wanting to know the theory behind the radios, the ARRL focuses on the technical details - the how and why - of the radios and the modes, so that when you walk away from this book you will know the answer to your question (and a lot more if you keep reading!) The only real negative comment on this book is that there is a LOT of very technical information. This can make finding exactly what you want to know a challange, as it takes a little digging and knowing exactly what you are looking for.A very complete index does make this much easier. However, for the beginniner this book would do well to whet your appetite for venturing deeper into Amateur Radio, and for the master RF engineer this book serves well as a very detailed technical reference that can aid in every day engineering questions. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Useful book, bad radio kit
This kit looked like a useful introduction to electronics for my 7-year-old son, assuming that I did at least some of the radio assembly. Winding the coil took over an hour and assembly of the other components took another 2 hours. I did all of it, it was way beyond his ability. It should not have taken that long but the supplied terminal block uses screws that do not always engage the thin wires and the thin wires are prone to breaking. The legs of the transistors were barely long enough to make it to the designated segments on the transistor that requires crossing of legs. Also, when crosing the legs of that transistor, the instructions say to remove some insulation from the bundle of extra wire included and place it on the legs of the transistor to avoid a short while crossing the legs, but I couldn't get that insulation onto the leg of the transistor and had to take some insulation from another piece of larger wire that I already had. By the time I worked out the loose connections and checked for shorts, I had spent way too much time on this project only to find that it did not work. Bummer!

The net effect was that my son had been exposed to the idea of electronics but did not enjoy the satisfaction of listening to the radio.I always wonder if the people who design these bad kits actually try to put the kit together or if they simply throw some parts together with some hyped up claims on the cover. How much would it have cost the manufacturer to supply thicker grade wiring, a pre-wound coil, and a better terminal block? You are talking pennies in extra expense. After putting together such a good book and attractive packaging, the publisher blew it by including cheap components.

1-0 out of 5 stars complete junk
My daughter and I have worked through about a dozen science kits of various types--this is the absolute worst. I have never seen anything like it.The parts are extremely poorly designed for the task and of very poor quality. We through this kit out after an hour.We will search elsewhere for a different radio kit.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Instructions
I've had previous horrendous experience with various electronics kits sold by Dowling Magnets that were poorly written and impossible to put together. Compared to those, this kit is very well written, with good pictures and diagrams. The previous reviewer had a problem with the first step: winding the coil. The instructions recommend getting an adult to help out with this step and I agree - kids don't have the manual dexterity to wind up the coil.It took me a good 30 minutes and I had my son's help, but that was much easier than the previous kit I'd had, where I had to spend an hour creating a winder, a half hour winding, and then the coil didn't work. This was comparatively simple and straight forward.

For the rest of the kit, my 11-year old did everything. He was very proud of his work, though it didn't work at first and I had to do some trouble shooting. One problem was that the last couple of wires installed were so thin that the connection mechanism wouldn't work well and I ended up soldering them down.

Before starting the kit I had my son learn the basic parts and what they do - he actually liked that. There is a colorful sheet which has a picture of each part and an explanation.Capaciters, diodes, transistors, etc.

All in all, my son was really excited about building this radio. It does, however, take some adult help, so be prepared.

1-0 out of 5 stars This Product Stinks!
I would strongly advise against buying this product!I bought this kit with my birthday money. This set includes materials and instructions to build a radio..I made one small mistake in the first step and it wonýt work. The kit requires to you wind some very fine wire around a cardboard tube without kinking the wire.I couldnýt do it, and my Dad couldnýt do it.On a scale of one to ten (ten being the best), Iýd give it a zero.

Book Description
Ham radio has come a long way since the days when amateurs used tube-type transmitters and receivers or pounded out Morse code on a telegraph key. Today, a modern ham shack will be equipped with at least one microcomputer and will take full advantage of state-of-the art digital communications technology. A powerful combination of conventional radio communications and fast, efficient microcomputer control, digital communications is the fastest growing area in amateur radio. Here, Jonathan Mayo provides a complete overview of digital communications for hams: its history, capabilities, and applications, as well as the protocols and procedures governing the various modes of operation. He also explains how to set up an operational digital communications station and what equipment and accessories are needed to furnish it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps a book for a course on UWB
The book was disappointing. It certainly does not help me understand UWB radio fundamentals. However, it might be usefull for certain UWB courses that might be taught somewhere (which I would not like to attend either). It follows the growing practice of pretending that radio design (in general and UWB radio in particular) is just a matter of matlab code and figures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginers as well as experts
One of the best UWB introduction books in the market today. It provides step-by-step instruction for you to get better understanding UWB and apply it in your research. The matlab code provided (if you can not download from the Prentice Hall, contact with the authors. I did and got the codes) helps you to "see and feel" UWB. Hightly recommended to everyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars such a waste of paper
First of all, this book explained UWB well as other reviewers described ...

The most annoying thing is that more than half of the book are just pure Matlab codes (hey, it is not a book of Matlab). I do not see any reason why these codes should be printed - instead, a CD will be much more preferable.

It is a good idea to have some checkpoints. However more than half of the non-Matlab-codes-contents are Matlab-related checkpoints (wow, Matalb again), which is kind of weird.

Probably a good book for those who need step-by-step instructions. Highly NOT recommended for those who have a good background in communications (especially those who have experiences converting mathematical formulas into Matlab codes).

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful book for UWB
Guys this is a very useful book for UWB implementation with plenty of MATLAB based examples. You may even accquire the MATLAB code for further exploration.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb book for UWB researchers
This is an excellent book for readers at all levels with an interest in UWB. Those that are new to this area will find it very comprehensive and clear to understand. On the other hand, researchers very much involved in signal processing will appreciate the very detailed theory and simulations in every section. The chapter structure is logical and flows in an unified manner. Each chapter is properly divided into theory, practical examples in the checkpoints, the most relevant references and Matlab scripts for each graphical representation. In our lab we recommend the book to all the students whose coursework includes projects in UWB communications and positioning.

In contrast with other signal processing books that I have used for my research in the past, this book is not just a compilation of theory about a specific field, but rather it provides the reader with valuable suggestions and solutions to the main problem of designing an UWB physical layer. For example, I believe that the description of the PSD for different pulse-based and multiband UWB systems is outstanding. Also, the repercussion of selecting different system parameters on the PSD is very complete. As an example of the philosophy of this book, chapters 8 and 9 are an excellent summary of receiver techniques in all type of environments.

The book also offers an exceptional overview of UWB ranging and positioning and MAC design providing a detailed explanation of the core concepts involved.

Congratulations to the authors! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good insight into what really happened in ES
I read the Spanish version of this book, which I am still trying to find.It is very moving and interesting as it gives the reader who lacks knowledge of the atrocities that occurred in El Salvador a vivid and real insight from the individuals that experienced it.As an educator in a very diverse area in California, I would defenitely recommend this book to any of my students interested in learning about the history of their people. It is a very simple yet moving book which will make you think about how people struggle to survive yet are determined to do so against all odds.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book You'll Never Forget
"Rebel Radio" is inspiring, moving, and impossible to put down, and not just for radio fans. It's the story of how a small band of young rebels put a guerrilla station (like a pirate station) on the air and kept it there for years against all odds, told in their own voices. We see them develop as journalists, as artists, and as revolutionaries. The Salvadorans are resourceful, creative, and audacious beyond belief. They tear down the station at a moment's notice and carry it off on their backs, staying just ahead of the government forces who want to destroy them, then taunting the generals on the air, like Wily Coyote and the Roadrunner. You'll fall in love with these people; they're fearsomely brave and committed, yet they have their funny and deeply human moments too. You'll want to run off to El Salvador immediately to see the museum that honorsRadio Venceremos.

5-0 out of 5 stars POR CORAJE
This book's story is a little example of how cruel power could be against a people. El salvador gave the world some decades ago one of the most gallards fights in order to preserve freedom, justice, wealth, independence, work. Power, land and money inside a fisk and in the other hand a defendless people, armed only with reason. The resulting damages of salvadoran pro- USA death squads are horrendous: massacres, sexual violations, catholic nuns, union leaders, peasants, teachers, children killed. And the School of the Americas is still open :)... And still current El Salvador government refuses to cooperate with justice.... ... A great homage for those killed.

5-0 out of 5 stars historia de la radio venceremos
I bought this book in El Salvador in one of the few visits that I have made to my natal land, the strugles that all the fighters have to go thru to keep the radio waves opened for all the listeners was horrendous. Thebook tell the story of the freedom fighters moving all the equipment fromsite to site and hiding it from the attacks of the salvadorean army. Theheroism displayed or let's say described in the book is to be admired. I amnot a former guerrilla member nor do I like comunism in any form, but beingsalvadorean myself I could not hold some tears after reading some of thechapters in the book.
