Product Description
Cognitive radio technology is a smarter, faster, and more efficient way to transmit information to and from fixed, mobile, other wireless communication devices. Cognitive radio builds upon software-defined radio technology. A cognitive radio system is 'aware' of its operating environment and automatically adjusts itself to maintain desired communications-it's like having a trained operator 'inside' the radio making constant adjustments for maximum performance. Operating frequency, power output, antenna orientation/beamwidth, modulation, and transmitter bandwidth are just a few of the operating parameters that can automatically be adjusted "on the fly" in a cognitive radio system.

Fette has constructed a cutting-edge volume that hits all of the important issues including research, management, and support. Cognitive techniques will be discussed such as position and network awareness, infrastructure and physical and link layer concerns. Though still a nascent technology, cognitive radio is being pushed by the US military and for mission-critical civilian communications (such as emergency and public safety services).

*The first book on a revolutionary technology that will be critical to military, emergency, and public safety communications
*A multi-contributed volume written by the leaders in this exciting new area
*Describes the location-determination capabilities of cognitive radio (the precise location of all units in a cognitive radio network can be determined in real time) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference to Cognitive Radio
The meaning of "Software Defined Radio" is well established, and the technology is becoming mature."Cognitive Radio" (CR), on the other hand has been applied to a wide range of functions and applications, some of which have little relationship to radio frequency apparatus. This book provides a comprehensive description of a wide range of topics subsumed by CR.

In his book, Bruce Fette presents articles in fourteen chapters, bookended by chapters 1 and 16 of his own,to the stage for discussion of the state of the art and look into the future. The presentations cover the technology from the high-level construct of Radio Environment Map to deep math in analyzing CR performance.

As the sections do not build on each other, the book is an excellent reference resource. It is not like a text that requires indepth understanding of early material to use later information. The extensive index facilitates finding information on specific topics.

As a long-term participant in the Software Defined Radio Forum, I say with confidence that practitioners in a broad range of communications technology will find this book an useful reference

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction to the New Ways in Radio Communications
It is a great pleasure and honor to write the review for the book by Fette. I am a communication engineer who practiced and taught communication systems for the last 34 years. It is heartening to see the progress in radio communication as this has changed the life style of people at large. From analog to digital to programmable to software defined and now to intelligent (cognitive) radio design we are feeling the future changes as to how people might use the radio technologies in the next 25 years. By studing this book from Fette one can easily guess where radio technologies will be heading. This book, and "Cognitive Radio Architecture" by J. Mitola, have come almost at the same time. While this book provides a general and more technological overview of various aspects of Cognitive radio, the book by J. Mitola gives specific architectural overview of the future radio. I feel both the books are must for those interested in studying and researching in the field of Radio Design both for commercial and military applications. My conclusion is that for Fifth Generation Cellular Radio these are the books to start with. Complimented by the research Articles (e.g. IEEE papaers) one can correctly find the way to radio development. I first congratulate Joseph Mitola for providing the lead in Software Defined/Cognitive radio concepts, and then appreciate the writer Fette for providing an excellent description of Cognitive radio with provision of connection to Software Defoined radio.
I am prticularly interested in Learning Strategies which modify the knowledgebase for making good decision to provide desired QoS in mobile communication systems (environment).
My congratualtions to both J. Mitola and Fette as they have given us the timely information on the subject.
Thank you.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book, but getting a bit outdated.
Are you tired of listening to the BBC and Voice of America on your shortwave receiver? Do you want to hear something new and exciting? Than this book is for you.

Written during the peak of unusual radio communications, The Underground Frequency Guide covers "numbers stations" that intelligence agencies may use to communicate with agents, international diplomatic traffic, Air Force One's phone calls, and bootleg radio users... everyone from fishermen to guerilla military forces.

Oh, and did I mention that it's 100% legal to tune in in the United States?

The only problem with this book is that it has become just a bit outdated. Frequencies change on occasion, and some stations mentioned have been silenced, gone encryped, disappeared, or switched frequencies.

This book is a good background read, but don't expect all the infromation to remain accurate. For more recent information you can check websites like spynumbers.com. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars William Orr...the legend lives on
I own several hard cover texts of Bill Orr.He documented and wrote many fine articles for QST, CQ Magzine, and 73, over the years.Bill had a way of going into depth when explaining technical concepts and construction methodology that many have found refreshing and enlightening.

Being "construction minded," I often repair older radio equipment or tackle a "scratch build" project and use Bill's handbooks as references.Over the years I have acquired several of his hard bound publications. This one, in particular, I needed for tube specifications I could not find elsewhere for a tube amplifier project.

While the 22nd and 23rd edition are very similar in content, if one wanted to own just a single copy, the 23rd should be the one of choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars RADIO HANDBOOK
One of the very greats of Radio literature ..... Sadly the AUTHOR now no longer with us. These books now priceless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice collection
If you missed out on the technology prior to 1970s because you were born after that, this book really helps you catch up.

There are quite a no. of errors in the formula and schematics, by and large can be ignored if you are looking for a general understanding on the subject and not an indepth product design / engineering knowledge.

Especially, the High Power RF amplifier design & construction and the Antenna chapters are very interesting and useful, I consider these are truely Bill Orr's home turf.

I have almost all the editions of this book and I find the last edition to bea real good value for money compared to most of the ARRL Handbooks
published after 1994.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fine book written by the Legendery Bill
I have with me, a huge collection of Technical Books on the topics of Wireless and Radio Communications on both professional as well as Amateur Radio Fronts. On the Ham Radio side, I found the ARRL and RSGB books especially the Handbooks have been retaining the same old contents with the cover page modified every year. I realized,I was wasting my precious money and efforts buying these year after year, till I started buying the Radio Handbooks written by Bill Orr. Though most of the stuff in Bill's Handbook seem a bit out dated from the Professional point of view, for most of the Hobbyists and Hams who do not care about the state of the art, or for beginers and budding engineers who want to get their basics right, I must say it is really the best. In every edition, I find the construction projects and the Antenna projects not only comprehensive but also exciting to read and build. Lastly, having worked with Eimac for so long, Bill's command over the subject is well demonstrated in the chapters pertaining to Vacuum Tube basics and High Power Tube Amplifier Construction.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're looking for a new copy...
...PrimeParts.net says they still have a few in stock; I just ordered one earlier today.Web link: http://www.primeparts.net/Books/books.shtml

Update: The book arrived and I've been perusing the contents. It's an absolutely beautiful book -- the pictures are crisp and clear. The technical content is quite good, although I would caution that the technical details are closer to what you find in something like the ARRL Handbook or perhaps Experimental Methods in RF Design than, say, Bowick's or Hayward's RF Design (text) books.

It is true that some of the content is dated: most of the amplifiers are tube-based and while some designs are perfectly workable as presented, today there are much more straightforward approaches using, e.g., microcontrollers and a bit of analog 'glue.'(Particularly amusing: He catalogs the 'typical home computer' as having 64KB. :-) )Still, there's a lot that can be learned from a classic book such as this, and even if the implementations have changed over time, the fundamentals are timeless; people who downgrade books such as this for being 'obsolete' are typically those who are only seeking a cursory understanding of the subject matter.

Product Description
Typically, there are over twenty radio systems on board the average commercial jet aircraft dealing with communication, navigation and surveillance functions. Very high frequency (VHF) air-to-ground communication is usually the main method of  information and control exchange between pilot and air traffic control. Satellite and high frequency radio links are used to complement this system for long range or oceanic information exchanges. Other communications systems are required between the airline operation centre and the pilot and sometimes between the passengers and the ground.

A comprehensive guide to current systems, networks and topologies, this book covers application requirements for communication and related radio-navigation and surveillance functions in aeronautical systems. There is also an insight into future possibilities as technologies progress and airspace operation and control scenarios change.

Ideal for civil aviation authorities, airspace management providers and regulatory organizations, Aeronautical Radio Communication Systems and Networks will also appeal to aircraft and radio equipment manufacturers and university students studying aeronautical or electronic engineering.

Key features:

  • Provides a broad and concise look at the various communications systems on board a typical aircraft from a theoretical, system level and practical standpoint with worked examples and case studies throughout.
  • Considers all types of aircraft from light aircraft to large commercial jets and specialised supersonic aircraft.
  • Looks at existing airport radio communication infrastructure and proposals for new very high bandwidth radio applications within the airport environment.
  • Provides a complete list of formulae for engineering design analysis and quick checks on system performance or interference analysis.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very bad book
I can't see how the previous reviewer liked this book. First, it is full of factual technical ERRORS (see my review on the UK site of Amazon for some details). Second, many figures are useless, the writing style is horrible, lots of names and web page URL's are mis-spelled. Apart from that there are a few interesting things, but it is hard work forgetting the above problems in order to extract any good information. Appalling!

5-0 out of 5 stars A has-it-all book

Product Description

Free radio stations, sometimes called “pirate” or “clandestine” stations, are unlicensed broadcasting stations operated by political and cultural dissidents to protest government restrictions on expression over the airwaves. Free Radio is a history of these unlicensed radio stations. The earliest free radio stations were operated by opponents of Adolph Hitler, who banned political opponents from the airwaves. Other anti-Nazi free radio stations were operated by underground groups in Axis-occupied Europe during World War II.After World War II, free radio stations such as “Free Greece Radio” and “Voice of Free Indonesia” took to the airwaves, protesting European colonial policies. By the 1970s, free radio stations were broadcasting to nearly every country where repressive governments were in power.Although a few free radio stations appeared in the United States during the 1960s, it was not until the 1990s that free radio truly arrived in North America. Free Radio presents compelling evidence that unlicensed radio stations in the United States—which number in the hundreds—are a response to changes in federal broadcasting policies. The policy changes have led to the domination of the medium by a few large corporations that use their stations to promote their financial and political interests, rather than the interests of the communities they are supposed to serve.
