3-0 out of 5 stars OK book but not great for learning basic radiology
This is a good book to read through but not as a primary resource. Use this book for quick recall after reading other radiology books.

5-0 out of 5 stars good read
nice, quick review book. a fair number of mnemonics (which i love). definitely not good for a primary source, but i don't think anybody would use it that way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the price
Two things are noteworthy about this book: the excellent black-white illustrations and quick review over common radiology questions. The book is divided by radiology sections, and usually start off with simple anatomy pictures and labelled illustrations of the relevant modality. This is very nice, since many radiology texts do not bother to show examples and illustrations of relevant anatomy. The illustrations are also much more valuable then looking at an atlas like Netter's, since only important radiological structures are drawn. The lists of differential diagnoses are good, though they require you to already what each diagnosis is. I don't find that a problem considering the size and scope of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars You do not need lots of pictures to learn radiology!
This book is a great way to start getting acquainted with Radiology. It gives a good background on some technological facts and a useful coverage of specific pathologies that you need for differential diagnosis. Emphasison background knowledge can be more helpful for learning in radiology thensimply looking at radiology picture examples. This is a great book formedical students in their last 2 years of uni! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This new, updated and expanded edition of a popular textbook on medical imaging is intended primarily for use by radiology residents and other interested physicians. In a relaxed, straightforward writing style, Dr. Wolbarst pulls together seemingly unrelated pieces of basic science and technology and illustrates how they fit together to form the foundation of medical imaging. He provides a great deal of detailed, practical information on how the various imaging technologies actually work and on the factors that affect their performance.

Nearly all of the equations are simple proportionalities, and the meanings of many of them are illustrated in the Exercises. The properties of the linear, exponential and sine functions, and the rudimentary ideas about probability and statistics that are needed, are reviewed in appendices to the chapters where they are introduced.

New chapters in this edition include "Nuclear Cardiology, SPECT and PET";"Spiral and Multi-Slice! CT";"PACS, IMACS, and the Integrated Digital Department"; and a chapter on emergency response to radiological disasters and the roles that radiologists could assume. ... Read more

Effectively and confidently interpret even the most challenging radiographic study

A Doody's Core Title!

"...should be a part of every emergency medicine resident's personal library. In addition to residents, I would highly recommend this book to medical students, midlevel providers and any other physician who is interested in improving their ability to interpret radiographic studies necessary to diagnose common emergency medicine patient complaints."--Annals of Emergency Medicine

4 STAR DOODY'S REVIEW!
"The purpose is to help improve the reader's skills in ordering and interpreting radiographs. The focus is on conventional radiographs, as well as noncontrast head CT. For emergency physicians this is a vital skill, which can greatly aid in making difficult diagnoses. The book is well written and thorough in addressing how to read radiographs, as well as covering easy to miss findings. The numerous pictures and radiographs are invaluable in demonstrating the author's teaching points and in engaging the reader in the clinical cases....This well written book will be extremely useful for practicing emergency physicians. The clinical cases are interesting and help challenge the reader to improve their skills at evaluating radiographs more thoroughly."--Doody's Review Service

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Radiology
I'm a 4th year medical student heading in to emergency medicine.I read this book during my radiology elective and found it extremely helpful. Dr. Schwartz's very readable case-based text was an insightful introduction in to basic radiology. The book taught me HOW to read many common studies as well as WHERE to focus.Highly recommended to all who could use a broad introduction to emergency (and general) radiology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Radiology Book not just for EM
As a 4th year Medical Student interested in internal medicine, I used this book during my radiology elective. It was an excellent case based approach to learning the essentials of radiology. An easy to follow descriptive approach began each section and was reinforced by the cases that followed. This book provided me with an excellent ability to read films and the confidence that I am not missing key findings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good primer
I got this to use for anatomy in medical school. Our anatomy class focused on just a few imaging cases, but they began to appear more frequently interspersed with other course material. So far, everything mentioned in syllabi and in board review sources is touched upon (perhaps briefly) in this book. Therefore, as a simple introductory survey into a very broad field, this book serves to cast a wide net and does a good job of making the content simple, straight-forward, and clinically relevant. I liked the question-answer outline considerably.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun to read, great images!
Chest imaging has always been a difficult topic for me to read and understand. This book is fun to read, and keeps your appetite whetted to read more.Has abundant images from both plain films and CT, so it's useful in learning about both modalities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text
Great text for radiology residents and attendings.Very lucid text.Great description of interstitial lung disease.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you only read one book in radiology, this would be the one.
Simply a must have, Dr. Webb has done a wonder job in addressing a difficult subject that seems to define the general radiologist, the ability to interpret a chest radiograph and CT.The text is easy to follow with key points reiterated in summary boxes through out the text. The selection of images and drawings is outstanding and puts meaning to the written text.Particularly strong is the chapter on interstitial lung disease, a topic that notoriously gives one fits.Quite simply, the entire pulmonary section is extremely well done.If I found a weakness, it would be the congenital heart disease section, personally, I think Dr. Lonergan at AFIP presents the material in a very resident friendly manner and the concepts are more easily gleaned and remembered.Skip Brandt and Helms which is picture poor and especially confusing on ILD; as well as, the baby Fraser and Pare, which espouses a number of confusing percentages and leaves you guessing like a poorly dictated radiology report listing everything but the kitchen sink in the differential and recommending clinical correlation, in fine radiology form.

If you are a medical student looking to get a jump on your radiology residency, a first-year radiology resident trying to make sense of different attendings calling something interstitial while another airspace disease, an upper-level resident trying to pull everything together before the boards or a clinician looking for a good introduction to chest radiology (whether it is to help you interpret films on your own or to better understand the CXR or CT reports), you simply can't go wrong with Thoracic Imaging. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent IR Text
Valji's Vascular and Interventional Radiology is an excellent, highly readable and mostly up-to-date textbook which will be very useful to radiology residents.

My sole complaint (and it's significant) is about the figures. In most cases there are no arrows and the captions are often quite vague, just mentioning the type of finding in the figure without providing specific anatomic localization. The net effect is to sometimes leave you searching the pictures to even find the abnormality!Certainly it means that, unlike with many radiology texts, it's hard to just "look at the pictures" and their captions and ignore the text of this book.

All in all, I think this is a very good book, mostly because the text is so well-written.But I do think that the captions could be expanded in future editions and arrows added to some of the figures to highlight key findings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vascular and Interventional Radiology by Karim Valji
I am second year radiology resident and this book really works in my rotation for the intervention area, I don't regret the purchase, it is worth each cent. Good images and with simple explanation. There is not a book that has everything, but I believe that this it is the most complete on the matter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practial text to have
Physics of Radiology isn't as complete a text as Martin's, it seems more like a handbook than a physics text, but it is definitely useful and is full of examples that I can't find in other books. It's a little difficult to read straight through because of the visual format (it looks like it was written on a typewriter), but the examples are great references. I would have liked it if the authors used units more often, so that I could more easily adapt the examples but in all, it was a good investment.

The emphasis throughout is on practical tips, common pitfalls, and the techniques used to obtain the best radiographs of specific areas and conditions.Changes for the third edition include: significantly enlarged to include a chapter on digital radiography; includes descriptions of several new radiographic projections; many of the images have been replaced by digital images, and there are also many new illustrations; expanded information on processing and image quality; updated to include new information, knowledge gained from continued clinical experience and the most relevant references from recent literature; and CD included with the book presenting all the radiographic images in electronic format. There have been major advances in other imaging techniques, including scintigraphy, ultrasonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging since the second edition. This third edition still focuses on radiography and radiology, but acknowledges the limitations of radiography in some circumstances. In these situations reference is made to other imaging techniques which may be appropriate, with suggestions for further reading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best equine radiology book out there
I purchased this book after using it as a reference during externships and I use it OFTEN. This book tells you how to take views, why you would take them, and gives you diagrams that label normal. It covers pathophysiology and predisposition to pathologies. There are great images in this book of pathology as well as normal. It is a really well put together book and though it is expensive it is worth it to me as I reference this book almost daily when reviewing radiographs during my fourth year in school.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR EVERY EQUINE VETERINARIAN
I am a private Equine veterinarian whom has been actively involved in Equine practice since I graduated in 1986. I have gone through this book in various places as I have not been able to own one for some unknown reason and my first impression of it was it is a must for every Equine Veterinarian. It contains alot of valuble information. Now thanks to the Distance Learning Programme in Equine Surgery, conducted by the Post-Graduate Foundation, University of Sdyney under Dr.Nick Kannegieter, I was able to get this book as it comes highly recommended in this programme. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Radiology Physics
When I started my residency in medical physics, I knew very little about diagnostic radiology. My background was in particle physics, so radiation and detectors were familiar concepts but in a different context. The specifics of CT, MRI, and imaging in general were foreign to me.

Christensen's book on the PHYSICS OF DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGY is, for me, a great primer on how the medical community extracts information from radiological imaging. The text exhaustively covers all the aspects of conventional radiography, such as collimators, filters, grids, screens, and films, as well as more specialized topics like CT and MRI.The text is engaging and easy to read, with a healthy dose of charts and graphs. While Christensen's includes the math, I would say (contra a previous reviewer) that Bushberg is the go-to source for technical details and data (which seems to be the consensus among medical physicists, but perhaps not among radiologists?)

Christensen's PHYSICS OF DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGY covers just about everything that you'll need to know about diagnostic radiology, although it might be more technical than needed for a radiology resident and too little for a medical physics resident.I found it to have a comfortable flow of information, presenting concepts in a smooth way without bogging down in details. The 4th edition was printed in 1990, so the chapters on CT and MRI will be outdated, but the fundamental physics remains the same.
On the positive side, this edition is old enough to discuss processes that aren't used much today (such as film vs. CR cassettes).

Chapters:
1-5. X-rays and interactions
6-11. Imaging elements (filters, grids, screens, and films)
12-16. Images (radiographic, fluoroscopic)
17. Stereoscopy
18. Xeroradiography
19. CT
20. Ultrasound
21. Shielding
22. Digital radiography
23-24. MRI

5-0 out of 5 stars Diagnostic Medical Physicist
This book has everything. It is so easy to read that you wonder if it's accurate.I used this to study for my ABMP boards and passed the first time. This book is to Diagnostic Physics as Khan's book is to Therapy Physics.Every diagnostic imaging person needs a copy of this book whether you are a physicist or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best for FRCR part I
This is one of the greatest books I have ever read in my life .
Reading it was a such a pleasure and amusement !
authors are witty and very close to me ,they don;t
leave u untill u udnerstand everything ..
I never thought I could understand physics this fast and simple ..
this book is time honored and invaluable .
I totally recommend it for those sitting FRCR part I
I studied it and passed FRCR from first attempt ..
I really didn't have to add a review for this great book , but
I want to since I owe the authors A LOT ..
Thank you for this great book ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for radiology resident physics course
This is one of the better textbooks i've encountered for teaching physics to radiology residents.Other books such as Bushberg are good, but it doesn't quite go into the same detail on some subjects like Christensendoes.A new edition updating topics such as MRI, digital imaging andremoving some of the chapters like xeroradiography would be nice.I'd alsolike to see a chapter or two on nuclear medicine imaging, but that mightmake the book a little too big.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent textbook for the diagnostic radiology physician
This most popular textbook for radiologist physics training courses (73% of market in 1989 AAPM survey) is excellent for the non-scientist who desires both technical and practicalinformation. Needs to add sections on digital radiography, pulsed fluoroscopy, and CCD cameras, while reducing coverage of some fading technologies. This is one of the better textbooks I have used for any course. ... Read more

Product Description
This comprehensive and thoroughly illustrated radiology boards review was prepared by the prestigious Duke University Department of Radiology. The book follows a case study format that challenges the reader to reach a diagnosis by presenting images, findings, and differential diagnosis before revealing the actual diagnosis.Three hundred cases are presented that cover every area of radiology, including chest imaging, breast imaging, neuroradiology, musculoskeletal imaging, vascular imaging, gastrointestinal imaging, genitourinary imaging, pediatric radiology, nuclear radiology, and ultrasound. Each case begins with a patient history, several images, and descriptions of the imaging findings, and then proceeds to a differential diagnosis and the actual diagnosis. The diagnosis is followed by a Key Facts section, divided into Clinical Facts and Radiologic Facts, that features bulleted common-sense pointers regarding pathologic and radiologic manifestations of the disease. Each case ends with a list of references. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent for board review.
The book covers all radiology specialties, which is a plus.Differentials are provided for each case, but the discussions focus on the final diagnosis. The quality of the discussions vary in both length and quality, since there are numerous authors.Image quality is pretty good considering the age of the text.Published in the late 1990's, it is in desperate need of an update.Overall, it is decent for board review.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice review for Orals but should be updated
The Duke Radiology Case Review is organized into 10 sections. Each section has 20 or more cases.Cases are outlined with the relevant clinical history, selected imaging findings, a differential diagnosis, a discussion covering key clinical facts and imaging findings.

Although dated, the material is appropriately presented, clear and concise.

Published in 1998, it is overdue for an update to include imaging findings relevant in other cross sectional studies.

Overall, the book is still high yield and I would recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful book!
I got this as a first year and use the appropriate section for the rotation I am on.It is helpful as yet another source of case studies, and the discussion of a differential for each set of images is nice.

3-0 out of 5 stars good but expensive, old, easily replaced
Your time for oral board prep should be focused on seeing as many high yield images as possible with the least amount of time and money invested.Though the discussions/cases are good in this book, there are are only 30 cases/10 chapters covered. The book costs about $100.You could buy two to three "case review series" books with the same investment. These books have 200 cases each.Personally i have not found a case book that describes cases as you should on boards- findings, differential diagnosis, most likely diagnosis and additional comments.Wiser choices are available

4-0 out of 5 stars For the Board Exams
Having recently written the US and Canadian Boards for radiology, andhaving done umpteen CD roms and teaching files, I found this book to be oneof the most organized and focussed in preparing for board discussions. Itcovers a wide spectrum of cases and gives pointed pertinent positives andnegatives when reviewing the differential.Granted, it is not completelycomprehensive (but then, there is no single book that is... oh, if onlythere were)It is not a book that I would start studying with, but, inthe end, near the final few weeks, it is a good quick read (1-2 days)totest yourself and pick up some pointers(it is also much cheaper than thecourse itself!). ...
