Product Description
This 432-page 8 1/2" x 11" hardbound tells of the numerous lifetime railroad adventures of Bob Richardson, noted author, photographer and historian. Bob, a railfan’s railfan, originally released the book in 1995 under the Sundance Publications label, and it sold out.

This new, limited second edition features 425 color and black and white photographs and covers Bob’s favorite locomotives, his travels in the Northeastern and New England states, Canada, Texas and Oklahoma, Old Border states and the Midwest, Southern States, Mexico and Central America, Persian Gulf countries, Colorado and New Mexico, the Vanishing interurban, the San Juan, railroading in the snow, Poncha and Marshall passes, the Gunnison area, Ouray, the Rio Grande Southern and much more.

The book features 22 chapters and covers such railroads and subjects as the Ohio River & Western, the crookedest railroad in the world; the Aliquippa & Southern; the East Broad Top; Tionesta Valley Railway; Edaville; the Tweetsie; woodburners in the woods; Like Oak, Perry & Gulf; and winter at Crested Butte, among others.

Possessing a fascination with trains and railroading as far back as 1931, Bob’s interest developed quickly into a lifelong career of chasing, riding and photographing trains. His train riding has led to many adventures few railfans have experienced.

Bob, with his journalistic penchant, tells a great story, weaving together facts and figures of how it used to be on the railroads. He became editor of the Linn’s Weekly Stamp News, was an advertising coordinator, served in the U.S. Army, owned the famous Narrow Gauge Motel in Alamosa and began publishing the Narrow Gauge News.

Chasing Trains, printed on deluxe 100-pound paper with a laminated color cover, will be available in November direct from the publisher for $62.95 and $5 shipping (USA) or $12 (foreign). Illinois resident should add 7.75% sales tax.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun; wonderful; among the very best railroad books
I admit it, I collect books and am a railroad junkie, especially interested in the 1930s through 1950s.This book came as a surprise, given the Colorado photos on front and back covers, and the subtitle reference to Colorado Railroad Museum.
In fact, Chasing Trains covers much more than Colorado - many other parts of the US, Mexico and Central America, and Iran, all places where the author traveled starting in the 1920s (he was born in 1910) and ending in the mid 1990s.
He describes his addiction to railroads, traveling to and on all types. The writing is excellent (though photo captions often repeat material already in the text). The photos are excellent, and for the most part unique: his photos on his unique travels.
I also enjoyed his Colorado materials, mostly about narrow gauge, that comprise perhaps 1/3 of the book.
Want to take a train ride "in the good old days?"Try this book, along with Burt Blanton, 400,000 Miles by Rail, and William Middleton, "Yet There Isn't A Train I Wouldn't Take."For great photos but narratives not always strictly wedded to fact, Lucius Beebee also must be included. ... Read more

Product Description
Fort Bend County was formed in the early 1820s by members of Stephen F. Austin's "Old 300." Traders utilized barges and steamboats running along the Brazos River to transport cotton and other products from the lower Brazos Valley to the port at Galveston. In 1853, railroads began to play a larger role in the county's transportation system. Transportation facilities were greatly improved when the first railroad in Texas, the Buffalo, Brazos, and Colorado Railroad Company, completed its first 20-mile segment to Stafford's Point in Fort Bend County from Harrisburg (Houston). As many as eight separate railroads were chartered and operated in Fort Bend County by 1900. Today some of the names have changed but most of the original rail lines remain in operation. The Union Pacific, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, and Kansas City Southern rail companies have picked up where their predecessors left off and are keeping Fort Bend County one of the busiest and fastest-growing counties in the United States. ... Excerpt: Georgetown Steam Plant -The plant was originally built by Stone and Webster in 1906. One of the first reinforced concrete structures on the U.S. West Coast, it originally it provided power for the Interurban Railway between Seattle and Tacoma; it also provided both direct current for Seattle's streetcars and alternating current for Georgetown, then an independent city. They purchased General Electric steam turbine technology, based on patents originally held by inventor Charles Curtis. At the time, this was cutting edge technology, and the Georgetown Steam Plant "marks the beginning of the end of the reciprocating steam engine" as the dominant mode of generating electricity on a large scale. Originally located along an oxbow of the Duwamish River to provide cooling water, the plant was left inland after the original river channel was straightened in 1917. Retired after nearly 75 years of operation, it remains "surprisingly complete and operable". The plant has three Curtis turbines, manufactured by the General Electric Company between 1906 and 1917. Puget Sound Traction and Lighting Company (now Puget Power) bought the Seattle Electric Company in 1912; the Georgetown Steam Plant powered the Seattle-to-Tacoma Interurban and Seattle streetcars; it also provided residential and industrial power to Georgetown. Originally an oil-fired plant, it converted to a coal in 1917. The building was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1984, and is also designated by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers as a National Historic ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=11691515 ... It is home to over 100 pieces of railroad equipment, including several restored diesel locomotives and cars. The museum's most notable locomotive, Wabash Railroad F7A #1189, operates a tourist train. The museum offers a tourist railroad which operates excursion trains over a former railroad line that was owned by Illinois Terminal and Illinois Central Gulf. The Central Division was purchased by the museum from the Illinois Central. The Central Division purchase allowed the museum to enter into downtown Monticello to the historic Wabash Railroad depot and is the mainline of the museum's heritage railroad. The Central Division is currently being restored up to White Heath to allow occasional operation into that town. Only a short section of the Terminal Division is currently in use from the central switch down past Nelson's Crossing depot into Camp Creek yard, but has been restored to within a few miles of White Heath.
