Product Description

A history of the Pennsylvania Railroad and its predecessor companies in Indiana. Few corporate institutions had such widespread impact upon Indiana's people or their way of life -- the "Pennsy" once operated one-fourth of the state's rail mileage. Highlights of its story include coverage of its famous passenger trains, its impact upon the state's economy, the railroad's contributions to Allied victory in World War II, and the post-war decline which led to its merger into Penn Central. Illustrations recreate images of its speedy passenger trains and heavy-tonnage freights, as well as advertising and other promotional materials dating back to the 1840s.

Book was received damaged from from the United States Postal Service.Book seller offered to replace it even though he would not be reimbursed by the Postal Service.Since book was still usable I declined the sellers offer but suggested he send future shipments to other customers in better container (He shipped it in a "bubble envelope"). The review asks for a "tag".I do not understand what kind of tag Amazon is asking for.

I can't read enough about the Pennsy and generally enjoy most books about the railroad. This book gives a good overview of how the PRR came together in Indiana in the early days and how it came apart at the end.I was veryentertained by this book and learned a lot about the operations in thisstate. ... Product Description

In 1972 three great railroads-the Chesapeake & Ohio, the Baltimore & Ohio, and the Western Maryland-joined forces as the Chessie System, their diesel engines resplendent in a brilliant new yellow, blue, and vermillion scheme sporting the stylized "Chess-C" logo based on the C&O's familiar mascot, Chessie the kitten. The story of the Chessie System, unique in railroad history, unfolds in all its grit and glory in this book about a rail operation that combined the best of tradition and innovation to a remarkable. Dave Ori traces the railroad’s origins from the first affiliation of the B&O and C&O in the early 1960s to the inclusion of the WM a decade later securing routes that spanned the Northeast and Midwest. He also examines the Chessie System itself, from the details of its operating divisions, major facilities, diesel fleet, and intermodal operation to the technological advances that distinguished its reign and its integration in the vast CSX system in 1987.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!!!
The book was exactly as described. Service was incredibly fast. I would highly recommend this seller to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Chessie System by Dave Ori
"Chessie System" is an apt description of the railroad's operations throughout its short existence. The first two (of five) chapters detail the road's history as well as that of its predecessors. The last three chapters cover operations detailing operating divisions, physical plant, and train movement. Also included in the final chapter is a brief overview of Chessie's locomotive roster. The text is nicely done and covers many aspects of the road's operations. This book's stumbling block, however, is its production. Photo reproduction is fair, at best. Some of the photos seem fuzzy and some seem to have colors that are off. Given the advancement of photography by the Chessie era and the development of computerized publishing prior to the book's printing, this is very disappointing. Also disappointing is the locomotive roster; hardcore diesel fans will find it woefully inadequate. Considering the discounted price this book sells for the overall package is a good deal, in spite of its flaws.

5-0 out of 5 stars On the Right Track
Great picutes and a wonderful addition to the MBI Railroad Color History--a railroad fan's delight!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not one of the best
I have not just read, but bought, every volume in the Railroad Color History series since its inception, and this is the first one I have been dissatisfied with. It is simply not a history of the Chessie system: it describes the formation of the system, but that's all: the rest of the book is just a topographical description of the routes which largely covers ground already dealt with in previous books in the series.
Production values are also not up to scratch. In particular, there's a large map that purports to show the components of the system but is actually nothing of the sort. One wonders how a bloomer like this got through the production process. There are also more literals than usual, especially in captions. The saving grace, as aways in this series, is the quality of the photos, but that's not enough to compensate for the other deficiencies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book On The Right Track
The Chessie System book is everything I thought it would be and more. I found in it information I had been looking for to use in some book projects of my own including two on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad alone. This book is a gold mine of information about the Chessie System and containes information you won't find in the employee timetables. It complements a Chessie System timetable collection very nicely. ... Read more

The juggling of railroads and the virtual seizure of coal mines were by no means the only accomplishments of the Vanderbilt family in the years under consideration. Colorless as was the third generation, undistinguished by any marked characteristic, extremely commonplace in its conventions, it yet proved itself a worthy successor of Commodore Vanderbilt. The lessons he had taught of how to appropriate wealth were duly followed by his descendants, and all of the ancestral methods were closely adhered to by the third generation. ... Read more

Product Description

Perhaps the most well-known railroad in transportation history, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway grew from humble beginnings in 1868 to a high-flying icon of the American West known more simply as “the Santa Fe.” In 1995, it merged with Burlington Northern and today its legacy survives as part of BNSF Railway.

Noted railroad author Steve Glischinski takes railfans on a tour of the Santa Fe’s entire history, throughout the American Midwest and Southwest. Santa Fe Railway looks into all aspects of the legendary railroad’s passenger and freight operations, from the famous 1905 record-breaking L.A.-to-Chicago high-speed run of “Death Valley Scotty” to the inauguration and career of the world-class Super Chief, and from the pioneering freight trains of the nineteenth century to modern-era intermodal runs linking Chicago and California in less than 48 hours. The book also features notable Santa Fe locomotives, from diminutive 4-4-0 steam models to the Super Fleet diesel-electric series of the 1990s and even the latest models run under the BNSF Railway banner. Illustrated throughout with archival black-and-white images and period and modern color photography, this is the quintessential history of the quintessential American railroad.

Product Description

More than just a railroad, the Southern Pacific was an empire, anchored in San Francisco but stretching from Portland, Oregon, to several ports on the Gulf of Mexico. From austere western roots, the "Espee" grew into a far-flung railroad of some 17,000 route miles. In fact, for many years, it was the nations only true transcontinental railroad.

This illustrated history tells the tale of SP's development from 1861 through its 1996 acquisition by Union Pacific. Through some 150 archival photographs, route maps, period ads, and timetables, readers are treated to the history of steam and diesel power, as well as freight and passenger operations.

In addition to images of the Southern Pacific's flashy red and orange Daylight streamliners, the book features photography from the railroads fabled Coast Line, Shasta Route, Golden State Route, and the granddaddy of 'em all, the Overland Route.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely pictures, pity about the text
Should you buy this book if you already own the first edition, published in 1999? It depends what your prime interest is. If it's historical, note that altho the text is copyright 2007, it's actually identical to the 1999 edition, so the use of the present tense and references to "today" are misleading. On the other hand, this edition comprises 160 pages, against 128 for its predecessor, while the text is set in a smaller type so must take less space. The extra space is devoted to more photographs, which can be more expansively displayed. And as far as I can tell, without doing an exhaustive comparison, only one is repeated from 1999. So if you want a handsome new picture book, this is for you; otherwise, hang on to your first edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Southern Pacific Railroad
I was very happy over the condition of this book. It arrived in great shape and was shipped very fast and packaged very well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great photo book, low academic value
Photos were great
History was disappointing, especially the part describing how SP came to be a large empire.Perhaps no one knows, but the author shouldn't have skipped over it by saying it was "too difficult to trace".The book in the same series about the Pennsylvania and the New York Central was much better from a historical standpoint.
I bought this book expecting to understand how SP came to be; admittedly I know a little more about the PRR being based in the East Coast, but this book left me more confused than I started.
Nonetheless, I am glad to see that people are continuing to write about railroads of yesteryear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Southern Pacific Railroad (Railroad Color History).
A well done historic line in this book, from the very beginning of small and big preceding railroad companies, under direction of the big four and all along the line in history, this Railroad company business was furtherset out and followed by its visionary engineers and leaders. A fallen flagtoday, this book gets my full recommendation as not only the wordings ofthis story of the friendly Espee takes you away to the era of beginning ina competative and wild environment the illustrations are well placed in thebook, supportive to its text. Surprisingly well are the 'handle bars',seperatly described 'hotspots' along the Espee route... Donner Pass,Tehachapi Loop and more. So get the feel for the 'West'. Enjoy. ... Read more

Product Description

In the years following World War II, a potent combination of new prosperity, a renewed love affair with the automobile, improved highways, and the availability of commercial air travel contributed to the dwindling number of rail travelers. By the 1960s, rail passenger service had become an endangered species in an unfriendly environment. Fred W. Frailey recounts the demise of the pre-Amtrak passenger train in Twilight of the Great Trains. Drawing upon a lifetime of experience as a reporter and editor, Frailey uncovers the reasons behind the disappearance of these great trains and explains how 11 railroad systems withstood or welcomed, fought or embraced the inevitable decline of their passenger services. Stimulating and informative, this book offers a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most challenging eras in American railroad history.

5-0 out of 5 stars good stuff
It is a pretty comprehensive history of the demise of passenger trains in North Amarica.I'd recommend it for anyone with a desire to read an authoritative account of how this sad event in railroad history came about. If your interest is casual and you open the book with no knowledge of railroad langauge, it becomes a hard read.I would have liked consistant good maps of the routes of these trains, but otherwise the photos are quite good and carefully selected.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Great Trains...Once More
Amazon just delivered the "Expanded Edition" (2010) of Fred Frailey's original book, "Twilight of the Great Trains," published in 1998 by Kalmbach. This new edition is printed by Indiana University Press. Both books cost the same: $50 (interesting...no price inflation over 12 years; you can't say that about much else today, and the new book is 20 pages bigger!). Amazon sold it to me for $33.

In my opinion, the original book is the best treatment ever written about the final decade of passenger train operation in America. Fred's writing is detailed, comprehensive, and easy to understand. The passenger line diagrams of where the trains went, and their consists, is outstanding in understanding, even in the twilight of privately-operated passenger trains, just how fine tuned the system was. It's about as close to Trains editor David P Morgan's writing style as you'll find, and each chapter contains a wealth of knowledge written in a friendly "let me tell you about this" manner.

The new edition keeps all the text of the older one, and has added one entirely new chapter focused on the Illinois Central: "America's Main Street." It comprises 17 pages, 10 pictures, and a superb chapter closing tabular entry by Steve Parsons of Sparta, Illinois, which documents by motive power and individual passenger car names/numbers 17 trains and 352 cars that passed through Carbondale, Illinois, on December 21, 1963. Fascinating insight into a way of traveling in terms of numbers of trains and traffic density that has all but disappeared from America outside the Northeast Corridor, particularly on the former IC routes.

Ten different photos in the new book replace other images in the original version. One image, B&O's "Capitol Limited" leaving Baltimore in July 1965 has the identical caption as the 1998 version, but a different Herbert H. Harwood Jr. photograph. New to the book are a classic Richard Steinheimer view of the eastbound "City of San Francisco" in full cry leaving Oakland behind four PAs (Steinheimer always photographed PAs like they were steam locomotives, and it shows!) and a beautiful consist only shot of C&O's eastbound "George Washington" easing to a stop in the Alexandria, Virginia, depot in April 1968.

The original book used glossy paper; the IU edition uses more of a matte finish paper. Its images are sometimes a bit darker than the Kalmbach print, but in many respects I found the "almost sepia tone" to be more pleasant visually. Kalmbach's was printed in Hong Kong; IU's in China.

I'm glad I purchased the new edition. The fly leaf says the expanded edition "brings the story up to date." I don't think it does that, as the final chapter in both books is identical and there is no new forward in the 2010 edition. But the IC material is brand new, and I liked the printing of the 2010 version better than its 1998 predecessor. If you do not have the 1998 version, I can unequivocally recommend this book if you're interested in passenger trains on 12 great railroads in the last decade of their existence.

5-0 out of 5 stars A poignant story
This is a great book about the end of privately operated passenger train travel in the United States, between the end of World War II and the start of Amtrak. It's a story of big dreams and dashed hopes told in an engaging style. Case in point: Frailey relates how a trip on the once-posh Texas Special went from crisp sheets and fluffy towels in the Pullmans and crystal-and-silver in the dining car to "a night spent in a Maytag dryer." Some railroad kept trying to the bitter end, others just gave up. Poignant and engaging, an excellent read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book of its kind
Twilight of the Great Trains gave me a much better understanding of the downfall of the American passenger railroads and the creation of Amtrak. The chapter on Union Pacific was a bit of a disappointment, as it was mostly a chronology of events. But subsequent chapters got inside the heads of railroad executives and the different approaches they took to a common problem. Some couldn't wait to get rid of their passenger trains, while others held onto them as long as they possibly could. Sprinkled throughout are several interesting personal stories.

Missing from the narrative is a detailed discussion of government funding policies which heavily favored air and auto travel while excluding trains entirely. This was a major factor in the loss of passenger rail service in this country, for the trains were essentially trying to compete against government-built highways and airports.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and informative book
If you love trains and/or model trains, then you will really find this book informative and engaging. It chronicles the demise of the passenger train as THE method of long distance transportation to the not often used method of long distance travel it is today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is an excellent book covering a large portion of railroad history in the US.The author Saunders does an excellent job of avoiding being turgid while offering the reader loads of in depth research. He touches on all the complex issues facing railroads of the time in an unbiased manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
This book should be on the shelf of anyone interested in how the rail industry weathered the regulatory and managerial storm of the mid 20th century. Author Saunders brings together both the 'rail' side of the picture and the financial and more human side of the players involved. The writing is such that it is literally a page turner. I have read it cover to cover many times, and I enjoy the tale each go. I would say a few of the maps need improved editing, but this is a minor aside. There is no work that comes close to matching the scope and value this book provides. To those who love the rail industry but did not live through this particular time, read this book, and you will have a crystal clear picture of the times.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mid-Century Consolidation of American Railroads
This is an academic history of the evolution of the main corporate identities in the American railroad industry in the last century. It gives good coverage of the consolidation proposals in the wake of WW1 federal administration and of the moves to consolidation in the post WW2 years. It is an essential reference for the serious rail historian rather than the average railbuff. It would have benefited from a little more editorial care, especially for the maps.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent railroad history
I liked this book so much I have read it twice. It is highly readable and very informative. I would recommend it to all train buffs as well as those interested in American history. The author does an excellent job of explaining the trends and events in American railroading for the time period stated and does it in a way which made it hard to put the book down. The author is soon coming out with a sequel and I will buy it as soon as it is available.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent if dry in parts
Saunders revises and expands his earlier work on the origins of Conrail. As such it is an interesting and useful overview of the problems of American railroading. He is, in my view, properly hard on management and government's failures. I think his treatment of labor is evenhanded, avoiding the cliches that are rife in railroad studies. A rewarding book for the railroad enthusist looking for something beyond picture books. Holds up well with the work of Middleton (which is high praise). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rio Grande History
Good review of the history, would have liked to see better route maps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rio Grande Railroad- Highly Recommended
James (jim) Griffin has provided a desirable snapshot and synopsis of the D&RGW historical issues with a select compilation of other 'fans' photos as well as his own.

The book describes the time and scale, significant persons and financial history providing great context, expansion and demise of the integral operations and relationships between owners and operators, as well as the 'state and federal' legal issues that are unique to the United States.

James uses modern photography and earlier 20thC from unpublished private sources to highlight the country and 'real estate' that the D&RGW subsequently served.

As a coffee table book (not meant to be a death knell!) for the detailed pictures, a text reference to the operations and hardships encountered, and even better pictorial reference for modellers and enthusiasts showing great detail and variation in the 'living' equipment and trains that real people used. For a non-US train enthusiast I learnt a lot from the book and James has done an excellent job capturing the feel of the topic.

And it is a modellers precis and reference to be admired!

Although tinged with sentiment and a legacy to a disappearing era of corporate leadership, this helps the book personify the way RG employees appeared to enjoy their burdens and lament the loss of their independence. Highly Recommended!

For more information see the D&RGW Yahoo Group/ elist. Many technical experts and historians exists till researching the topic for whatever hobby purposes they desire!

Product Description

For decades the New York Central reigned as one of Americas most important railroads. Beginning with the 1853 consolidation of a group of fledgling railways that formed a route from Buffalo to Albany, the New York Central grew into a powerhouse transportation company with more than 10,000 route miles.

This illustrated history of the railroad that grew to power under the Vanderbilt dynasty covers every aspect of the New York Central through its 1968 merger with longtime rival Pennsylvania Railroad and the eventual merger of Penn Centrals successor, Conrail, into Norfolk Southern and CSX. Along the way, readers are treated to a selection of archival photographs, commissioned route maps, period ads, and timetables detailing all of New York Centrals operations--steam and diesel, freight and passenger--not to mention associated icons like Grand Central Terminal, the legendary Henry Dreyfuss shrouded Hudson steam locomotives, the Water Level Route, and the 20th Century Limited passenger trains.

Prolific railway author Brian Solomon sources 150 evocative photographs, promotional materials, and postcards not included in the previous edition to deliver a nostalgic and colorful look at the New York Central. In addition, there are four specially commissioned maps.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but I liked the 1999 edition better.
Already owning the 1999 original edition I decided to buy the new edition because it was expanded. The changes though are not totally to my liking. The print is smaller, the original system map that was from an actual New York Central timetable has been replaced by an unofficial map produced for the book. The book says it has been re-illustrated, which is certainly the case. There are many new photos and post card views.Whether they are better or worse is of course in the eye of the beholder, I for one prefer the older edition's pictures.Perhaps more importantly the new pictures are not as crisp and sharp as the ones in the 1999 edition. At first I thought it was a botched printing but I could not see any evidence of that.Large pictures that take up two separate pages have the same somewhat blurry quality on both pages. I am not in the position to inspect additional copies of the book to see if the printing quality is better in any of them so I only state it as a possible problem.Overall, based on my experience, if you have the older book this expanded edition is probably not worth the price. If you don't have either then consider the 1999 edition if you prefer sharp pictures.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Text But Good Pictures
Don't publishers employ editors or proof readers any more? This book is full of simple spelling errors and poor grammar, the kinds of errors that a proof reader would find very quickly. Many of the errors are missing or duplicated articles.Others are cases of a plural noun being used with a singular verb or vice versa.Another class of error, common to many books that include photographs, is captions that don't match the photograph in some important detail.

Still, the many photographs in the book are of very good to excellent quality. Most of them are pictures that I have not seen in any other publications. It's unfortunate that the quality of the text and some erroneous captions make the whole thing suspect.

5-0 out of 5 stars INFORMATIVE & EASY READING !
Wish I had this book several years ago to help me plan the prototype layout and what engines to acquire. Highly recommend this book for NYC fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Me and my Son love it.
The book is well done, and the photos are super.
My five year old can't put the book down. It really shows the NYC in a way that was never seen before, unless you worked for the railroad. If you love trains, you must add this book to your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars great short history of the new york central system
This is a great short history of the New York Central System. Chapters 1 to 4 deal with the makeup of the system and history. Chapter 5 deals with Grand Central Terminal and New York electrification. Chapter 6 is the steamlocomotive fleet. Chapter 7 is the diesel locomotives. Chapter 8 is theelectric locomotives. Chapters 9 & 10 are about the freight andpassenger service. The pictures used in the book are great. The amount ofinformation is remarkable. If I were to purchase only one book on the NewYork Central System, this would be the book. ... Read more

Product Description
Nothing so changed nineteenth-century America as did the railroad. Growing up together, the iron horse and the young nation developed a fast friendship. Railroad Crossing is the story of what happened to that friendship, particularly in California, and it illuminates the chaos that was industrial America from the middle of the nineteenth century through the first decade of the twentieth.
Americans clamored for the progress and prosperity that railroads would surely bring, and no railroad was more crucial for California than the transcontinental line linking East to West. With Gold Rush prosperity fading, Californians looked to the railroad as the state's new savior. But social upheaval and economic disruption came down the tracks along with growth and opportunity.
Analyzing the changes wrought by the railroad, William Deverell reveals the contradictory roles that technology and industrial capitalism played in the lives of Americans. That contrast was especially apparent in California, where the gigantic corporate "Octopus"--the Southern Pacific Railroad--held near-monopoly status. The state's largest employer and biggest corporation, the S.P. was a key provider of jobs and transportation--and wielder of tremendous political and financial clout.
Deverell's lively study is peopled by a rich and disparate cast: railroad barons, newspaper editors, novelists, union activists, feminists, farmers, and the railroad workers themselves. Together, their lives reflect the many tensions--political, social, and economic--that accompanied the industrial transition of turn-of-the-century America. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars first-rate
In looking at the Southern Pacific railroad from the perspective of the various people who resisted or opposed it, Deverell tells an intriguing story. Rather than the triumphalist approach of so much railroad history (along with their mixture of both admiring and condemming the "robber barons"), Deverell lets us see and evaluate the changes the railroad brought to California-both physically and mentally. Along the way, he takes a fresh look at the Progressives' anti-railroad politics, and the confrontation at Mussel Slough-the violent incident around with Frank Norris wrote his masterful, sweeping "Novel of California," The Octopus. This is first-rate California history.

2-0 out of 5 stars For Specialist's and Grad Students Only
Reads like a dissertation (which it is).Aside from the exhaustive bibliography, I can think of a reason for recommending this book (unless you are a graduate student working in the area of the history of California 1850-1910, which I'm not).

Deverell didn't really tell me anything I didn't already know, which is a little dissapointing since I have only a light background in this area (i.e. The first three volumes of Kevin Starr's history of California, Fragmented Metropolis by Fogelson and The Octopus by Frank Norris).

It's a suprisingly short book with only six chapters. The first chapter handles early reactions to the coming of the transcontiential railroad (Mostly positive). The second chapter covers slightly later reaction to the railroad (mostly positive, some negative). The third chapter discusses the Pullman Strike inCalifonia. In my opinion, this was the stand out chapter of the work.

Chapter four covers the Los Angeles "Free Harbor Fight". This chapter is largely duplicated in "Fragmented Metropolis".Chapter five covers written opposition to the railroad, with a close up of Frank Norris' "The Octopus".Chapter six covers "Progressives and the Railroad"(they didn't like it.)

At this point, I'm ready to never read anything about the California Progressive movement ever again. They are, simply put, a boring, hypocritical bunch.

Again, if you're looking for a book with a good guide to the less accesible literature in within the field (academic journals, etc.) this book does have an excellent bibliography.Otherwise, you might want to just stick to the more well known works in the field of California history and skip this book. ... Product Description

From the 1830s to today, the railroad industry has developed myriad complex mechanisms to help keep North America’s railroad rights-of-ways safe, efficient, and relatively accident-free. In this paperback rerelease of the successful 2003 title, the otherwise-arcane world of railroad signaling is explained in concise language and brought to life with nearly 200 fantastic photographs that depict signaling history and all aspects of modern operations. Author and photographer Brian Solomon brings his wealth of knowledge and photographic talent to a subject that has not often been tackled in book form, yet is integral to the American railroad experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to learn about Railroad Signaling
Railroads have needed effective ways to safely move trains since the beginning of service in the 1830's. Before the advent of signaling, trains were guided only by timetables which limited the number of trains and the utilization of the tracks.

Railroad Signaling, a book by noted author Brian Solomon, tells the story of US and European signaling from the beginning through the most recent developments in signaling technology.

The book goes into detail about how the different primary signaling systems work, along with providing colorful and easy to understand illustrations.

I found the section on semaphores very interesting. Even though most semaphores have now been replaced by newer equipment, they are still popular on model railroad layouts and in Europe. Now through the book I better understand what the indications mean.

Another interesting section covers the development of CTC (or Centralized Traffic Control) which allows signals and tracks to be controlled from a dispatching center miles or thousands of miles away from the trackage. This change caused the closing of many smaller depots and allowed dispatchers to control large sections of railroad from one desk.

The book includes a number of great historical as well as modern photographs from a variety of US and European railroads. I have not seen most of the photographs in the book and especially enjoyed the photographs of operations in Ireland.

Railroad Signaling from Voyageur Press is available in paperback or as a Kindle book. If buying on Kindle make sure to read on a PC or iPad where you can see the illustrations in COLOR and at a large size for best effect.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little indistinct.
Rather broadbrush approach to explaining the changes in signaling and to daysequipment status

5-0 out of 5 stars Railroad Signaling
An excellent history of railroad signaling in the United States and UK.Text is very clear and very thorough.Photos are A+++.Explains clearly and simply the technology as it developed and how the train crew responds to the various indications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I bought this book for my father... he worked for Amtrack for over 35 years...He just LOVED this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars More about the history
I was looking for a reference guide for the signals at the tracks near my house. This book gave me a basic idea (I guess there are too many configurations/railroad) but most of the book covered the early history of signaling.Interesting, but I wanted more of a recent 'field guide' type book.I have 7 signals to look at within a mile bike ride of my house and I still cant figure out 5 of them! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Santa Fe - All the Way
This is an excellant book for serious fans of the Santa Fe Railroad. The book has a large number of pictures, but don't be fooled into thinking that this is another "coffee table" picture book. There is a great deal of well-researched textual information contained between the covers.Think Lucius Beebe or Don Ball and you'll have a good idea of the quality of both the pictures and the text. There are a great number of black and white photos of early Santa Fe equipment, towns, and territory; including many not found in other works. This is an expensive book, but very well worth the price of admission.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive ATSF History, Vol. 1
This is volume 1 of a three volume set telling the story of the Santa Fe Railway as written by Santa Fe railfan and historian Donald Duke. Although the book is illustrated with 474 photos and illustrations, it is not a coffee table photo book but a history book telling the story of the SantaFe from Chicago to Los Angeles and down the coast to San Diego. The majorportion of the book deals with the Santa Fe in California with photos anddetails of otherwise obscure stations along the way. Photos range from 1880to 1980, but photos from the 40s and 50s dominate. This book is a"must have" for the Santa Fe railfan. ... Read more

Product Description

Few states have a railroad heritage as rich as Pennsylvanias. This illustrated book offers a colorful look at the Keystone States historic railroads, the men who built and ran them, and the engineering feats that made them possible. Railway historian Brian Solomon also shows readers the legacy those railroads have left in the form of todays historic tourist roads, museums, and destinations.

Railroads of Pennsylvania travels from Scranton, home to Steamtown USA and the Laural Line trolley, to Altoona, the heart and soul of Pennsylvania railroading; from East Broad Top, one of the nations best-preserved historic railways, to the famed Horseshoe Curve, which still hosts 50 trains a day; and to current operations like the Delaware-Lackawanna Shortline with its gleaming fleet of Alco diesel locomotives.

Illustrated throughout with beautifully detailed modern photographs, black-and-white archival images, and specially commissioned maps, this book is at once a handy guide to Pennsylvanias railroads and a thoroughly enjoyable tribute to the states key place in railway history and lore.

5-0 out of 5 stars Train Yourself to Relax
Here is an outstanding history and pictorial survey of the late (but still beloved) NYNH&H.The author gives a basic (yet thorough) history of the railroad and describes what it did and how and why it did it.Thoughtfully selected and captioned pictures supplement the well-written text. The book includes maps which will provide readers not familiar with the scope and operations of the NH an idea of "what was where when."The quality of photo reproduction (color, black and white, sepia)is excellent. This will be a good addition to your collection of books on railroads in New England. Also, in this era of drastically overpriced and often indifferently produced railroad books, Lynch's work is refreshingly affordable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the best
For those interested in Railroads in general, and the New Haven Railroad in particular, you would be well advised to grab a copy of this book. As a 46 year veteran of the NH,PC,Conrail & Amtrak progression, I found it to be very accurate, concise & mostly very interesting reading, bringing the whole history of the New Haven in easily followed chapters (couldn't put it down once I started reading it). Also, there are many excellent photo's. I strongly recommend this book. ... Read more
