5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous Book on the Maya
This is by far the best and most beautiful book on the Maya for the general reader that I have come across. I have traveled extensively throughout the Maya Area, and own several books on the subject, including classics such as "A Forest of Kings", "The Blood of Kings", Coe's "The Maya", and Henderson's "The World of the Ancient Maya". However, none of these volumes come close to Grube's massive, lavishly-illustrated tome in terms of spectacular photographs, wealth of topics, and breadth of scholarship.

Edited by N. Grube, a renowned Maya scholar, the book is a collection of articles by several experts on the Maya, each a specialist in some aspect of the civilization. The range of articles is wide enough to form a comprehensive general introduction to the Maya and their achievements. In addition, there are articles that discuss unusual topics covered only briefly, if at all, in the other books. Alongside the usual material on Maya history throughout the Pre-Classic, Classic, and Post-Classic, you will find delightful chapters on the role of caves in Maya religion, intoxication and ecstacy, war and prisoners, court dwarves, the meaning of the Bonampak murals, Puuc architecture, Tikal architecture and its influence, astronomy and mathematics, grave robbers, Maya Gods, cacao, obsidian, the Teotihuacan connection, the Spanish Conquest, and the Maya in the Colonial and Present Eras. Your reading will be greatly enhanced by the dozens of beautiful illustrations, many of them unique to this volume. Where else, for example, will you see large color photographs of the Rio Bec and Tonina ruins, of chicle gathering and looted sites in the Peten jungle?

While "Divine Kings of the Rain Forest" certainly does some justice to the divinity of its subject matter, it is relatively expensive. Moreover, since it is out of print, you might even have to pay more than the list price to obtain a nice copy. However, it will be worth every penny. It is truly a pity that this book is out of print. (Try used book stores in large cities, where you might be fortunate enough to get a good copy at half price, as I did.) This is definitely a volume to display, treasure, and savor repeatedly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shows just why they're called the Magnicent Mayans...
This is the best book I have ever come across on Mayan culture. It is a oversized coffee table volume, some 450 deluxe pages, each of which is covered with maps, illustrations and many, many photographs. Each period in Mayan development is covered in the chapters and the illustrations correspond neatly with the text. The text also does not veer off into the author's own opinions as these books frequently do.The first evidence of humans in the Mayan planes date to around ten thousand b.c., the book starts there and continues to the current Mayans (yes, their descendents alive in the world today, and that, too, is an interesting look). For anyone who thinks that civilization began in the Mediterranean, this book is clear evidence that it began on the other side of the world at the same time, if not earlier. It's a shame that the price and the fact that this book is out of print makes it less accessible to readers. For Mayan historians, this book is a must, but even someone with only a casual interestin the subject would find much of interest here. ... Why is the Brazilian rainforest vanishing so fast? And why is it essential not only to the people and animals within it but to the whole world? This story, told through a child called Remaema, describes how the Yanomami tribe is battling against potential developers. Can a solution be found that will protect the forest and allow the tribe to continue living as it always has, while benefiting from limited development? Richard Platt's dramatic story and Rupert van Wyk's evocative art, accompanied by an information spread, offer an exciting perspective on a controversial and topical subject. ... Read more

Readers familiar with Randy Wayne White's "Out There" column in Outside magazine will relish this first collection of his best work: those new to White's delectable blend of adventure, hilarity, and spirit can only be envied for the satisfaction of that first encounter.

Whether it's "This Dog Is Legend," in which he tells of his cinder-block-retrieving Chesapeake Bay retriever named Gator, or "Coming to America," about the stirring - and sometimes terrifying - Mariel boat lift, White never fails to engross us in a life of sun, boats, work, and sport. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Formative Book
I read this book when I was about 16 years old and then I read it again.Fifteen years later, I would not be a writer or a hunter or a hunting instructor if I had not read 'Batfishing in the Rainforest' at that age.I have still never gone fishing for tarpon, but reading that book led me to seek out and appreciate whatever odd fish might be wherever I happen to find myself. Even if its just bluegill and bullheads in a pond, the point is to have the right attitude and a sense of adventure about what you're doing. I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone with a strong interest in the outdoors.

4-0 out of 5 stars Only 8 percent fishing, but evocative writing throughout
Published in 1991 by Lyons & Burford (now Lyons Press, part of Globe Pequot Press), this was Randy's first non-fiction effort in book form. A longtime contributor to Outside magazine (which also launched the writing career of Jon Krakauer), he penned many of these stories originally for his "Out There" column.

In the tradition of great travel writing, we learn as much about the people--and, often in the case of RWW, the animals--he meets than we do about the places they live. Critics would make a valid point if they accused the author of machismo (think Robert Young Pelton's The World's Most Dangerous Places) but putting oneself in harm's way to get a good story is nothing new. Some selections are better than others but on average this is very enjoyable travel writing, and requires less investment than Theroux or certainly Chatwin.

Rather than risk ruining the plot of these short stories, I will list the titles and leave it at that. I have starred my favorites in each of the three sections.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid
Some dated material, but hindsight gives special interest to some of these travels. Great writing is always a pleasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars truth is stranger than fiction
Batfishing in the Rainforest is a collection of Randy Wayne White's essays - some of them poignant ("the Legend", White's tale of his dog is fabulous), many of them gut-bustingly funny (his experiences at a health spa and advice on "How to be a Competent Southern Waterperson are priceless), a few had me shaking my head (how can a person be suprised they got mugged in Lima? and how come I never meet fun travel companions in third world countries?) All of them are a pleasure to read.

White never takes himself (or others) too seriously, and typically has a light and humorous take on things. The stories are brief - many originally written for Outdoor Magazine. I found the book thoroughly enjoyable and I strongly recommend it.

For those of you who are familiar with White's "Doc Ford" novels, you can see where many of his characters, plots and the "research" for his tales come from. For those readers who have not yet discovered this marvelous writer, I encourage you to begin here and then sample his hand at fiction. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful introduction to the rainforest
This book serves as a delightful introduction to the Amazon Rainforest and is sure to hold the attention of even the youngest of preschool audiences with it's bright colors and well formed verses. The rhymes are very well done as the author introduces a new animal on each spread, beginning with the parrots in the morning and ending with jaguars and otters at night. Also included are some lesser known animals such as pink river dolphins, caimans, and leaf cutter ants. There's an excellent read aloud flow marking this a great choice for themed story times or school units on the Amazon.

The illustrations here are very colorful and packed full of things to look at and enjoy.Slightly older children will gain information from the back sections that include brief descriptions of the peoples of the Amazon, more information about the animals described, and conservation efforts. It's this additional information in conjunction with the charm and beauty of the story itself that mark this as a great resource for both classrooms and young animal lovers.Recommended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book for Your Health
Health and Beauty from the Rainforest is filled with rich history about Malaysia. You will learn all about the people, cultures and medicinal ways.

The way the people treat their beauty, mind, body and soul is amazing. I love that they use all natural things from the rainforest. (I am now actually jealous I do not live there!) Everyone could learn a lot from them in this fantastic book.

The book is absolutely stunning as it is filled with breathtaking photos. The photos help you get even more understanding out of it.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes learning about history and wants to live a healthier life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Herbal Care and the Rainforest!
My interest in Malaysian culture was piqued after watching Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre Foods on TV. I decided to go to Amazon.com and see if they had anything on the subject. This book stood out amongst the rest. It not only teaches us of the Malaysian traditions, but also the traditions of ramuan "healing mixture of medicinal plants and plant parts". The book lists the various plants and herbs in the rainforest, along with their healing properties. There is also a botanical glossary which gives us the local name of the plant, the scientific name, and other names the plant is known by. For instance, lets take buah pala, its scientific name is myristica fragrans, It is more commonly known as nutmeg. Of course, now I wonder how it got the name nutmeg. Was Meg acting goofy when she ate the plant?

Whoever picked out the photos in this book did a spectacular job. They are gorgeous! I especially liked the photos of the people and the rainforest. If you are into geography, cultures, medicinal healing, or just like to look at beautiful photos, then I give this book a big thumbs up!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best craft book I have ever worked with.
I have ordered many craft books since I started having children. Most were just not worth the paper they were printed on. This one is totally different. My kids and I have LOVED many, many of the projects in the book. They go through the book regularly looking for a new project for us to do. All the projects only require items easily found around the house, and yet when the projects are finished they look really good. It isn't just a drawing, but a real three-dimensional object. (There were one or two exceptions in this book, but even those projects were interesting, unique and different from what you would expect.)
