Book Description
1882. Lecky's object in this work was to trace the history of the spirit of rationalism, by which he understood not any class of definite doctrines or criticisms, but rather a certain case of thought or bias of reasoning which gained a marked rise in Europe. The nature of this bias is shown in detail within the book when the examination of its influence upon the various forms of moral and intellectual development is discussed. ... Read more

Book Description
In 1957 while exploring the jungles of Guatemala, archaeologist Roger McTavish discovers a set of monuments apparently erected by Alvaro Manchez, an ancient Mayan leader and philosopher known as the Superman. McTavish translates the inscriptions carved on the monuments, and shortly after, disappears. Forty years later, a young couple connected to McTavish finds his translation, and they begin to reveal the Superman's ideas while the Guatemalan Army tries desperately to prevent them. The Superman Philosophy sets off a cloak-and-dagger train of international plotting and intrigue as American intelligence and an international secret society mount a campaign to suppress its publication. When the world's leading philosophers fail to refute the Philosophy, the story moves through a welter of terrorism, blackmail and betrayal towards its climax and the inevitable fate of the Superman Philosophy. ... Book Description
The term "economic rationalism," closely tied to equally contentious terms like "neoliberalism, " "economic reform, " "structural adjustment," and "globalization," first entered the lexicon more than ten years ago. In this timely and exceptionally accessible work, philosopher John Wright tackles economic rationalism from a moral perspective. In non-technical language, he reviews the economic arguments for economic rationalism. He examines the ethnical defenses for economic rationalism, considers the many criticisms of economic rationalism, and weighs whether the moral defenses are truly valid.

Some of the many challenging issues the book confronts include:

Does economic rationalism work to maximize human happiness? Does inequality matter? Does the free market always ensure the survival of the economically 'fit?' Does the free market maximize individual liberties? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Important subject, extremely easy to read
If you're interested to evaluate economic rationalism or free markets from a moral and ethical point of view, this is the book for you. While the author is a professor in philosophy, he starts the first third of the book talking about economics. And I have to say it's a very excellent presentation and straight to the point. In fact, one of the most understandable presentations I've read about the basics of economics.

The rest of the book evaluates economic rationalism and free-market-ism from various philosophical perspectives: utilitarian, deservingness, social darwinism, voluntary exchange, economic democracy, maximization of liberty and conservativism.

The one thing I absolutely loved about this book was that it was very easy to read. I've read a lot of economics and a bit of philosophy. Though my knowledge of these subjects may not be as much as others, I didn't really have any trouble following this book because the author has a wonderful gift of making things easy to understand and his arguments easy to follow. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Nice to have some freethought history
Prometheus' second anthology is not, I would say, as good as the first one, but it is still a nice read. Most of the selections are at least a half-century old, and most are much older. The biblical criticism of Bradlaugh and Wheless shows its age, and many of the other essays have beenoutdone by contemporary works. But the best feature of the anthology isthat it shows the past of freethought and atheism. There were courageousmen and women years ago, when prejudice and bigotry were even more intenseagainst heresy, who were unafraid to speak out for the truth.I enjoyreading these works and getting a feel for the passion and intensity ofthose brave individuals.Freethinkers would also do well to familiarizethemselves with our past.It lends encouragement. Our generation is notthe first to question religious authority, and we will not be the last. The poetry selections are interesting, too, for those with a taste for it. Read and take heart. ... Read more

Book Description
This collection of original essays examines the controversy over and attacks on rationality in the methodologies of the humanities and the physical and social sciences. These essays represent the thinking of a wide variety of philosophers, psychologists, historians, classicists, and economists about the role of rationality in thought and action. Reflecting the differing perspectives of their authors' disciplines, as well as the centrality of rationality to those disciplines, they are important additions to a debate that has been going on for some twenty years. Beginning with an introductory essay in which K.D. Irani covers the various ways in which rationality can be approached, the body of the book is divided into five sections dealing with various aspects of the issue. Respectively, they are concerned with rationality as it relates to ethical and social thought and action; general scientific thought and the particular disciplines of economics, history, and law; the analytic and hermenutic approaches to communications and learning; and the contrasting classical traditions of ancient Greece and China. In the final section, two differing theories concerning the nature of rationality itself are presented. A list of suggested further readings completes the volume. ... Read more

Book Description
The book's essays represent an important contribution to the contemporary philosophical debate concerning Realism and Rationalism. The author defends in a clear and consistent fashion a fallibilist, realistic, and rationalist position in opposition to the idealistic and relativistic viewpoint characteristic of present postmodern philosophy.
