I was very disappointed in the uselessness of the book. My pursuit of better study aids for reading comp continues..

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Happy!!
My son and I worked with this during his summer reading. It was easy for both of us to identify the strategies, challenge his understanding of the lesson and implement the strategies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Comprehension Prep for High School
This was a great prep for improving comprehension and improving active reading skills before entering high school.Lessons were fully explained, and then you were given exercises in a workbook format in order to check your understanding.Theexercises were fully explained afterwards, to further explain the concepts in case something wasn't clear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great instructional tool
This is an excellent book for both teachers and tutors alike. I use it for both remedial and enrichment for the many different levels I am tutoring. The "Putting It All Together" chapters at the end of each unit are really great. The answer to each question is given along with the corresponding lesson so the student knows exactly which skills need to be practiced. I would highly recommend this outstanding book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nonfiction Reading Comp Science Grade 4
This science workbook is different from many other science workbooks in that there are no science experiments to reinforce the lessons, which is actually a nice welcome change for me. It is mainly read a one page article and answer questions on another page with the fill-in-the-bubble format and also one page with a quick vocabulary review. You can see a few sample pages on the Teacher Created Resources website. This workbook has 144 pages and many interesting readings that appeal to this grade level like how we get ice cream headaches, what is deodarant about, dust mites, etc. This workbooks is a great science supplement, I also like Steck Vaughn's science/reading workbooks too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable for Teachers
In teaching a course on literacy assessment, I was looking for a concise means to incorporate Running Record and Miscue Analysis. This book enabled me to find a happy middle ground that was highly applicable for my preservice teachers - something they could wrap their heads around and put into practice. Definitely a great starting point for teachers wanting a quick and simple reading assessment. There is also a 3 Minute Reading Assessment for grades 5-8.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Tool
This is a great resource for any classroom teacher. The assessments are user-friendly and help you to quickly pinpoint reading difficulties.Unlike many other assessments, there is a comprehension piece in addition to expression and automaticity. I photocopy kids' results to share with parents; and the assessments are simple enough that parents are able to understand the results and practice specific skills with their child at home.

Why four, not five stars: They're more like five or six minute assessments once you actually write down all your notes.I've used them for awhile, and even with practice am never done in three minutes.I also wish there were more passages for each grade level.Overall though, a great book and one of my more often-used teacher resources.

3-0 out of 5 stars Reading Fluency & Comprehension
I got this product in the hopes it would help me finding material for a student of mine with fluency issues. It does.I only wish it had more passages on each level, instead of just one!He isn't progressing thatthat quickly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Assessments
I have used this and the higher level version of this book. They are great, short assesments for reading fluency.A passage with a word count is provided for the instructor, as well as a student page.I prefer to use these for instruction or practice, and use standarized versions for documentation such as Aims Web. ... Product Description
Reading comprehension is a skill that all students must develop for academic success, especially as they advance to college and beyond. This book for junior and senior high school students asks them meaningful questions about their reading preferences and difficulties. For example—

  • What kind of reader am I? Avid or reluctant?
  • What can I do if I don’t understand what I’m reading?
  • How do I keep the information in my head? All students can profit from this book, but reluctant readers will find it especially helpful. Guided by the author, who is an experienced teacher, they learn how to read with ease, and to comprehend what they are reading. Most important, they discover how to transform a once-arduous task into a pleasurable experience. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Well -- there is a little pain...
I am a parent of a reluctant rising 7th grader.I decided that my son and I would read this book together to help him with his reluctance and to help him increase his reading comprehension. However, the 1st sample reading selection was an English/Social Studies selection about a Holocaust survivor. I felt a bit of pain in the 2nd chapter when I had to answer my son's question -- "What is rape ?" after he read the sentence -- "Each and every one returned at midnight screaming with terror and pain because each one had been raped."

I have not given up on the book - because already I think there are some great points for helping with reading comprehension -- but I really wasn't ready for the comprehension to be about really difficult issues. So this is just a warning for other parents to be aware of.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Improving Your Reading Skill
I agree with the explanation on how to cope with your new words on from p.80 to p.83, because I believe it is less painful to tackle new words and expressions according to the explanation than to try in vain to just memorize as many words as possible. Just looking up the words isn't good enough to strengthen your vocabulary building. You need to use your imagination; first, of course, read the definitions of the words, second, judge whether the words have positive, negative, or neutral meanings, third, find other synonyms and antonyms mainly in your thesaurus, fourth, set the examples by making sentences including the new words, and finally draw the pictures to make sure you understand the meanings clearly. These 5 steps will deepen your understanding, that's for sure!
I personally feel that you can be an avid reader if you deal with the reading articles you are really into. The main reason is that I bet you won't give them up even if you encounter several new words and phrases. And you could get the gists instead of paying too much attention to each word. So let me get to the point; stop being a perfectionist, or eventually it is going to tire your mind! In other words, perfectionism makes you a reluctant reader.

3-0 out of 5 stars A better supplementary text
I read this and several other books, including the "guaranteed to pass" books, but I still didn't pass. I ran out of preparation time, I knew I still didn't get it, and painfully I knew I failed. I have been out of school for some twenty-five years, so that's part of the problem right there. In desperation, I hit the bookstore the next day, clueless what to look for. Then it struck me, the basic children's gradeschool books, the thin ones with big letters, might be my ticket. I opened a few books, and Bingo! The material was step-by-step organized. For example: here is an essay, this is what a main idea looks like, here are some more essays, find the main idea and write it in the blank space. This "painless" book in review here does have plenty of tools and practice, including some unique approaches, so it probably makes a bettersupplementary study than most. For example, to nail your mind down, highlight some words. But it is also probably better suited to a reader who already has the basics down, and who needs a review or wants some extra tips.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for students, parents, and teachers!
Everyone will benefit from the material found in this text.Middle school and high school students OF ALL READING LEVELS will enjoy the the writing style and the format, which introduces them to various ways to improve their reading skills.Teachers will also find this an invaluable tool when looking for ways to improve reading comprehension in the classroom. The Painless series has been very successful, and this book is the best I have seen. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Too difficult for junior high students
I teach a Language Arts Lab class to high school students with a 6th-8th grade reading level. The questions are better suited for 10th or even 11th graders. The title should be changed. My regular ninth grade students--who are a pretty bright group-- would have difficulty with these questions.

1-0 out of 5 stars mediocre stuff
This book should have written as for high school students. That's the book's level of the reading. It was a waste of money for a college student, who needs much more higher level of reading i.e. difficult contents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Leveled for High School
There is nothing wrong with this book but the reading practice inside is of a high school level.I purchsed it to use with my middle school students but gave it to the high school teacher.I think the reading level should be posted with these items so other teachers don't run into the same problem.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not really the same level as the SAT
The problems are worth doing, but the level of difficulty is not that ofan SAT. In SAT critical reading questions, you will often be asked to makejudgements based on a gut feeling of what the author was trying to portray. Also, the SAT readings can contain a few lines that are quiteincomprehensible, and you are forced to answer questions even though youare in a state of partial confusion. There are neither of these pitfalls tobe seen in this book. Also the readings in this book are shorter. For thesereasons, this book has to be supplemented with others for a really goodpreparation for SAT critical reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Patience is the key
I used this book to study for the SAT Verbal. I scored well over 200 points after finishing this book ( from 510 to 760 ) ! As in almost every standardized test, long term planning is the key. This book is very very comprehensive and should be used for the patient and the long term planner. The other SAT verbal books mainly deal with memorizing Vocabulary. However, app. half of the SAT verbal questions and points are Reading Comprehension. Quite often, these SAT books give you a few RC samples and advise an overly generalized method. This book is specifically committed in tackling these specific questions with lots of examples and an emphasis on self-learning. With consistent effort and patience, you will score BIG! The only thing that turned me off about this book is that it can be repetitive and boring. You get pummeled by sooo many actual RC questions that you just get sick of it! But it's worth the effort. Along the way, you will master RC questions and smile! ... Read more

If you have ever wondered how to teach comprehension strategies to primary-age children, read on.

First, imagine a primary-grade classroom where all the children are engaged and motivated; where the buzz of excited, emerging readers fills the air; where simultaneously words are sounded out and connections are made between the books of their choice and the experiences of their lives. Then, open these pages.

Welcome to Debbie Miller's real classroom where real students are learning to love to read, to write, and are together creating a collaborative and caring environment. In this book, Debbie focuses on how best to teach children strategies for comprehending text. She leads the reader through the course of a year showing how her students learn to become thoughtful, independent, and strategic readers. Through explicit instruction, modeling, classroom discussion, and, most important, by gradually releasing responsibility to her students, Debbie provides a model for creating a climate and culture of thinking and learning.

    Here you will learn:

    • techniques for modeling thinking;
    • specific examples of modeled strategy lessons for inferring, asking questions, making connections, determining importance in text, creating mental images, and synthesizing information;
    • how to help children make their thinking visible through oral, written, artistic, and dramatic responses to literature;
    • how to successfully develop book clubs as a way for children to share their thinking.

Reading with Meaning shows you how to bring your imagined classroom to life. You will emerge with new tools for teaching comprehension strategies and a firm appreciation that a rigorous classroom can also be nurturing and joyful.

This would be a good tool for a teacher to summarily assess student's reading. It can give a hint that more testing is needed. It is extremely easy to administer and to record.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reading Assessment
These assessments provide a teacher with a quick way of monitoring progress and determining need for additional testing. Easy to administer and to score.

4-0 out of 5 stars great mini assessments
As a special education teacher, I have used these with my in class support students more as practice and mini assessments. They are only one page long, so they are quick and easy. They provide a teacher's page with a word count and a page for the student without a word count.I also used the lower grade levels for my pull out students.(I prefer to use a more standardized assessment such as Aims Web for documentation purposes.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Pass This Up
Its true; it really only takes 3-5 minutes to assess your students' reading level. It assesses the words correct per minute, the % of correct words, comprehension, fluency, pace, smoothness, and tone. Its great and highly recommended.I wish I had this years ago!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful!
I found this book very useful to use in the classroom. I was able to conduct the assessments fairly quickly and provide both myself and the parents with an abbreviated list of areas in which the student needed to work.Really great for the classroom teacher! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Addition to Any Educator's Library!
"Reading Stories for Comprehension Success"is an excellent resource of forty-five non-fiction passages. Each graded passage is presented like a mini-unit.It begins with a host of prereading activities and resources for the particular non-fiction topic. Following this is theactual passage (and this reviewer has found the passages to be particularlywell-written as well as very interesting). The passages are followed bywell-designed questions, attending to both literal and non-literalcomprehension. In addition, the passages lend themselves to follow-upwriting assignments in which students can emulate the author's style.Thisis one of the best books of its kind! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great strategic approach
This Veritas Prep book is an excellent guide to tackling the reading comprehension section of the GMAT. It teaches a good overall strategy and provides useful insider tips. Specifically, the STOP strategy works well to deconstruct the passages quickly and efficiently. Using the strategy, I have a framework in place as I am reading, allowing me to isolate the main messages and critical facts of the paragraphs. When you reach the questions, you almost know what they are going to ask, and the insider tips helps to avoid the incorrect choices and pick the right answer. Great tool and approach to tackling the test.

Another positive is that even after the test, this made me a better reader. It helps you understand how a good passage should be written - helping you read efficiently going forward.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the book
Extremely well written and great passages, they exactly replicate the GMAT, neither too easy nor too difficult.

4-0 out of 5 stars Provides good practice...
The question sets are quite good... Some of the toughest GMAT relevant sets I have seen.. If you do well on these, there is no way you wont do well on the actual GMAT RC. So this book can be very helpful in gauging your preparation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading Comprehension Book Review
I used Veritas Prep's Reading Comprehension book as a guide for approaching this time-consuming but important component of the GMAT Verbal section.Because the GMAT is computer-adaptive, the better you're doing on the Verbal section, the tougher the Reading Comp passages will be.The subject matter becomes abstract (ex - different approaches to studying double helix DNA) and unclear if you don't have a strategy to guide you while you're reading.I found VP's framework for Reading Comp to be the most concise and reliable of any other GMAT prep materials (I had also referenced Kaplan and Princeton Review prior to VP).This book is very clear and its principles will save you tons of valuable time on the GMAT's Verbal section - don't let yourself fall behind on time like so many do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making the difference on the Verbal score
As you probably know, you can make the biggest improvement on your GMAT score by nailing the Verbal.I picked up the Veritas prep books when I decided I needed to retake the GMAT and improve my score. Not surprisingly, I was particularly interested in the various books for the Verbal section of the test. This Reading Comp book really helped me develop a strategy for efficiently tackling RC problems without getting bogged down in lots of re-reading.Ultimately, I was able to significantly boost my verbal score in part because I used this RC book from Veritas. ... Product Description
Reciprocal teaching is a technique based on teacher modeling, student participation, and four strategies that good readers use to comprehend text: predicting, questioning, clarifying, and summarizing. Although reciprocal teaching originally was designed for use with struggling readers, author Lori D. Oczkus offers innovative lessons aimed at improving the reading comprehension of all students. Reciprocal Teaching at Work: Strategies for Improving Reading Comprehension provides a practical classroom resource on reciprocal teaching that readers will find accessible and engaging. Chapter 1 describes each reciprocal teaching strategy in detail and suggests ways that teachers can overcome both difficulties that they may encounter when using this teaching technique and common problems that students have with using the strategies. Chapters 2–4 explain how to use reciprocal teaching in whole-class sessions, guided reading groups, and literature circles, respectively. Each of these chapters offers scaffolded lessons, minilessons, and reproducible forms for classroom teachers to use with students, and reflection questions for staff development. The appendixes provide a list of what teachers should observe when students work with the reciprocal teaching strategies, a student self-assessment for strategy usage, and instructions for conducting informal assessment interviews with students. This book will benefit classroom teachers and reading specialists working primarily with students in grades 2–6, and teacher educators, school administrators, and staff developers seeking successful reading comprehension strategies to share with teachers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reciprocal Teaching at Work

5-0 out of 5 stars Experienced teacher gives this product high marks!
My teaching has been refined and my students are working towards independence as great readers. It's easy to apply to curriculum already in place!

5-0 out of 5 stars Reciprocal Teaching
This book is an excellent tool for teaching the four important reading stategies of predicting, questioning, clarifying, and summarizing. The third graders that I have used it with love the characters. They are using the strategies more because of the characters that were used to introduce them. The fifth graders in our school have taken over the teaching of the strategies using reciprocal teaching. It is an excellent tool to teach reading either whole class or small group. ... Read more
