5-0 out of 5 stars Great Home Course
All of the Heartmath Institute's information is wonderful. Another Heartmath publication, The Hidden Power of the Heart by Paddison, is one of my favorite books. I first encountered the Heartmath message at a Institute of Noetic Sciences Conference where they were teaching Freeze Frame. The Heartmath books hadn't been selling in the conference bookstore but after the Heartmath presentation, they flew off the shelves.Heartmath has done compelling, peer reviewed research demonstrating the connection between the heart and the mind - physically, emotionally and spiritually. If you can't afford to take one of their seminars, this is the next best way to begin. It will teach you the difference between care and over-care.Fabulous stress buster.Music on the included CD has been proven to have positive physiological benefits -said to boost immune system and DHEA production. If you are interested in the mind-body connection to healing, this book/program is for you. "Are you as tired as I am of books constantly telling you about doing your best to understand your parents, doing your homework, making curfew, getting a haircut, dropping that hemline, and blah, blah, blah?"
-- Jay McGraw, from the Introduction

Well, you don't have to be anymore. Life Strategies for Teens is the first guide to teenage life that won't tell you what to do, or who to be, but rather how to live life best. Employing the techniques from Dr. Phillip C. McGraw's Life Strategies, his son Jay provides teens with the Ten Laws of Life, which make the journey to adulthood an easier and more fulfilling trip. Whether dealing with the issues of popularity, peer pressure, ambition, or ambivalence, Life Strategies for Teens is an enlightening guide to help teenagers not only stay afloat, but to thrive during these pivotal years.

Whether you are a teen looking for a little help, or a parent or grandparent wanting to provide guidance, this book tackles the challenges of adolescence like no other. Combining proven techniques for dealing with life's obstacles and the youth and wit of writer Jay McGraw, Life Strategies for Teens is sure to improve the lives of all who read it.Amazon.com Review
"Are you as tired as I am of books constantly telling you the same old Brady Bunch, Beaver Cleaver, goody-two-shoes BS about doing your best to understand your parents, doing your homework, making curfew, getting a haircut, dropping that hemline, and blah blah blah?" So inquires Jay McGraw, son of bestselling author Phillip C. McGraw, in the introduction to the younger, hipper version of his father's Life Strategies. This funny, straightforward guide helps teens steer rather than drift in life, dealing honestly with topics from peer pressure to TV addiction with the underlying mantra, "Don't like it? Change it." Divided into the same 10 "Life Laws" that are in his father's book (from "We teach people how to treat us" to "There is power in forgiveness"), McGraw urges teens to take control of their lives at every turn. That said, he doesn't expect any young person to respond to the way his father's book is written, so he translates "People do what works" to "The truth about why you can act so weird" and "Life rewards action" to "What are you waiting for? Get it in gear!" He demands that his readers ask themselves hard questions about missed opportunities, perceptions, self-sabotage, and personal shortcomings so they can figure out what's not working and fix it. Why? So that they can turn dreams into goals--with specific timelines and strategies. There's no doubt that the book has the enthusiastic pounding zeal of an aerobics instructor. But it makes a lot of sense, and if a teen took even a few of these lessons to heart, he or she would be more in control than most adults. (Ages 13 and older) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars life stragities for teens
this book was purchased by me for my granddaughter.i read the book before giving it to her for her birthdayshe has read it and tells she finds it very helpful and has shared some of the book with her younger sister. i treasure any info that can help my grand daughters have a better life.lmr

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend
The transcation went smoothly, the book arrived sooner than expected, and was in perfect condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars **TEEN READER**BEST BOOK I EVER READ!It is truely AMAZING
I have to say reading the comment above made me pretty sad. This book was not sending mixed messages and it is definately NOT telling you to be popular and that your parents will only love you more if you get good grades. This book is simply about helping yourself become more of what you want and getting more out of the life you were delt with. It makes me so sad to hear bad things about this book becuase that review probably stopped someone from buying this amazing book.

This book helped me through the toughest times in my life, it works with you and helps you see what is behind the "my life is perfect" mask that so many teens have. Amazing book, it changed who I am and how I act. For instance, in one chapter it talks about how in arguments if you just talk even if someone is yelling at you, you are not being passive, but in turn arguments turn into talks a lot more often. So as a test i followed this advice becuase i had just moved in with a step-sister my own age and we were not getting along very well. Now, that we stopped fighting (and i give all credit to this book) we are able to talk about what is bothering us and not fight. We couldnt be closer now. And that is exactally the reason i would recommend this book to ANYONE, it helps with topics like that without barking orders or telling you what you need to do or you suck as was stated above. This is an EXCELLENT book. BEST BOOK I EVER READ!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars shut up!
well.. of course a person like me would have to read what people though before i wrote what i thought! i think that the people that don't like this book need help! why in the world would rich people not have problems!! and there is way more to these people than you think!! just because some of you are shallow and can't use your imagination and have fun with some of the jokes he throws at you doesn't mean you need to get mad!! grow up! there are more people who know that that book was good and i happen to believe strongly in what he wrote!! yes i have money but no i don't have the perfect life promise!! so just because a person has money does not make them unknowledgeable about real life! so think to yourself again maybe you just need to read between the lines or maybe your life was to perfect but i know that this really helped me and i am doing some of the things that he said and it has helped me alot through everything i have been through!!

4-0 out of 5 stars What About Multi-Talented Teens?
It is so great that someone who has grown up with Dr. Phil for a father feels ready to share wisdom from his perspective with teens like himself.I found it much more effective than most books written by adults (who were teens in such different times!)There's one issue teens struggle with, however, that didn't get the attention it deserved: what to do when you love lots of different things but your guidance counselor and parents say you'll eventually have to pick just one. ... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Your Home Library Excellent Software
This product has specific fields for the entry of all essential data about a book but is still flexible enough to allow for the
entry of information specific to a personal library. I found
the ability toput the entire data base in alphabetical order
with one click of the mouse a great feature. The instruction manual is also excellent with lots of useful information and helpful hints. If you are looking to organize a personal library its hard to imagine a better system exists anywhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars there's a better alternative
I spent a fair amount of time looking for something like this last year and couldn't believe there weren't more options. I finally installed Book Collector from a tiny little outfit collectorz.com) and it works fine.

But here's something that mystifies me: why doesn't Amazon offer something like this? They could automatically add the information on books you buy from them.

1-0 out of 5 stars The NYPL should be ashamed of putting this product out
I bought this off of the New York Public Library website. What an utter waste of $40.The book that comes with the software is somewhat helpful, but honestly there is no new information to anyone who has been collecting books for a while. The worst part is the "software" that you are supposed to use to catalog your books.First of all, it is difficult to install--this is always a sign of a inferior product: no product that was properly QA'd would be released in such condition.Second of all, the product is just a fancy version of a spreadsheet.I could literally use Excel or MS Access to catalog my books just as well as this software. You actually have to input EVERY piece of data associated with a book. There is no excuse for anyone with an Internet connection to have to manually input book data.I state again: it is very surprising that the New York Public Library would include this product in their stores. It is a major, major rip off and there are far superior cataloging products out there.

The product I finaly ended up using is one called Readerware (http://www.readerware.com/).Readerware, for the same amount of money ($40), allows you to scan in the barcodes of your books--the software comes with its own CueCat scanner. Then the software looks up the barcodes you entered, (using the Internet),and updates each barcode with all the available info on the book. I scanned 800+ books in about 4-5 hours.BTW, you can also use Readerware to scan in all of your DVDs and CDs, (you have to pay more to get the full version of Readware that supports books, DVDs, and CDs).

Of course, you don't have to take my recommendation to buy "Readerware", but please don't waste your money on "Your Home Library."

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Unfortunately I concur with the semtiments of the other reviewers.I ordered the system based on the writeup in the New York Times. At least I can save the $40 price by ordering books from Amazon.com.First, I could not open the CD-ROM, but apparently the program is not useful.Second, book's main virtue is as a general discussion of book cataloguing and organizing, best suited to a collector of fine books rather than someone (like me) who buys too many and needs to find them at home, rather than duplicating an academic library setting. For the basis of my collection's organization I used The Reader's Catalog. It works great because of its index to over 40,000 books, a well thought-out plan, and the convenience of being a paperback book with complete bibiographic data on the books. Why type in an ISBN when they are easily available from Amazon or in a book like the Catalog?

2-0 out of 5 stars Some Good Ideas But Not A Solution
According to a recent New York Times article, Kathie Coblentz has a home library she estimates at 3,600 volumes packed into a one-bedroom apartment. As a special collection cataloger for the New York Public Library she has written the book portion of this set (software, book, and binder).

Book cataloging software is an iffy proposition. My current collection (20,000+ volumes not counting 1,000+ of graphic novels) is on a computerized database.I tried many off-the shelf products and they all fail in one major aspect or another.Do you want to know what stories are in a particular collection?Do you want to know that the book crosses several genres? (a big thing in romances these days)Do you want ISBNs? searches capable of looking for primary, secondary, tertiary, etc. authors?M. Ahrens suggests software that adds data based on ISBN.But what about all of those books published before the ISBN became a standard in 1970? Value?Edition?Typeface?Binding?A collector is better off thinking about what they want to track in their collection and using a simple database program (Paradox, Access, etc.) or a configurable home inventory program.

The binder is designed for printing out a copy of your book inventory (mine changes several times a week thus making a paper record short-lived and wasteful). It is a nice addition for a complete collection (say a complete collection of first editions of a favorite author) but inadequate for any active collection.

The book is interesting but seems to apply to a perfect world. If you add to your collection, the idea of shelf numbering may not be something you want to have to keep updating in the database as books move from one shelf to another.Calculating shelf space needed is usually pretty straight forward (but always add at least 30% if you don't want to spend more time moving books than reading them.

Of course there are nuggets that cataloging novices may not have thought of and the price is not prohibitive but if you are looking for that final solution to your personal library, this is really just a signpost that can point you into better directions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the busy mom
I had this book when I had 3 small children and not much help around the house and worked full time.It was mine and my kids favorite because the story is just so true on how kids cannot give their mom even 5 minutes peace. This book is a perfect gift for anyone you know who has 3 or more small children. It's fun and my kids loved my reading it to them over and over!It will make you smile!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fav book growing up
This was one of my favorite books growing up. I grew up with a single mother and always remember her relating to the mom in this story. When I was being difficult, she would reference this book and tell me she needed five minutes peace. It helped me understand that she needed some time to herself in a way I could understand as a child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very cute book
My five kids really like this book..my 2 and 3 year old want me to read it almost every day...it's one of my favorites too.The three little ones in the book remind me of my kids along with the storyline. The mother does seem a bit too harsh to the children, but every mother has days like this once and a while:} Great illustrations too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant story!Absolutely adorable!
This is a brilliant book! All stay-at-home moms or dads can relate to this story. My children couldn't understand why I liked it so much until they were older.I can't understand the one review that thinks it shows such disrespect. The story is so funny! It is so true!It is exaggerated, but that makes it all the funnier. The children (though elephants) are children, and act like children. They can't understand why their mother would want to have 5 minutes away from them.Don't we all feel like that sometimes!I sure do!This is my all-time favorite children's book.I am taking it to a college storytelling class tonight for my read-aloud picture book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mom lets kids walk all over her, then gets angry about it?
I don't understand all the positive reviews for this book.It goes against so much of the parenting we practice in our house.First of all, the mother, Mrs. Large, says something we'd consider hurtful in our house--she says she wants a bath "Because I want five minutes' peace from all of YOU."The artwork shows a really cross mom looking at sad, hurt little kids.

Then, to top that off, the pattern of the book is that the mother lets the kids walk all over her.She asks them to stay downstairs and they don't (no consequences from the mom). When interrupted in her bath, she asks her older son to limit his interruption to one song, then he plays it over three times (no consequences from the mom). She asks her daughter to read one page, and her daughter reads five (no consequences from the mom). All the while, Mrs. Large looks more and more frustrated, and more and more the "pity-me" victim.

Finally, fed up with the kids trying to be with her and not listening to her, she leaves the bathroom and again (angry looking while her kids look sad) says "I want five minutes' peace from all of YOU."

Seriously, this book is a twisted view of how we should communicate and treat our kids--and a really sad portrayal of how some moms think they're the victim of their own kids, when really all the kids want is clear communication, fairness, and respect. If you don't want your kids to treat you like a doormat, don't *be* a doormat...and certainly, don't get angry at your kids because you've taught them you ARE a doormat.

If you're looking for a book with this same theme, but not nearly so troubling, try "The Seven Silly Eaters."There, too, the mother gets stressed and overworked by her kids, but there isn't passive aggressive nastiness in that book...and in the end the children learn how to help out. ...
